While things are looking brighter, it still doesn't help that there is a least another year of suffering with this current Congress. I am very hopeful that the republicans will lose control of the House (and, as a dreamer, why not the Senate). I'm sooooooooooooooooooo sick of this government.
I read this on Democratic Underground and I would say that I was surprised at the gall of this Congress, but sadly, I am not surprised...
"And with polls now showing that 49% of registered voters DeLay's district would vote for an unnamed Democrat compared to 36% who would still vote for DeLay, it looks like Hammertime may be finally drawing to a close...
...unless Dennis Hastert can help it, that is! Last week it was revealed that the Speaker of the House is in the process of pulling a little "DeLay tactic" of his own - according to the Boston Globe:
Hastert has scheduled the first House session of 2006 for Jan. 31 - after a holiday break of more than a month, and two weeks after senators are due to return to Washington. The late start gives DeLay, a Texas Republican, a greater amount of time with which to dispose of the charges, as new leadership elections could not occur until the House is back in session.
So if you weren't sure about the priorities of House Republicans before, perhaps this will give you a clue. With the victims of Hurricane Katrina still in desperate need of federal assistance, with the war in Iraq taking the lives of American soldiers on a daily basis, with big American oil companies refusing to provide relief to low-income familes who face huge heating oil bills this year, Dennis Hastert has decided to put off doing the people's business for a few weeks so that Tom DeLay can try to wrap up his criminal trial.
Congratulations, Republicans. I think you're almost touching the bottom of the barrel. "

Pfffft. Congress voted to give themselves a pay raise of $3,100 last month, the day before their two week vacation was ready to begin. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Huh? Why the fukc do they need raises in the first place? We sure as **** aren't getting cost of living raises. What's even more insulting is that they gave themselves those raises while they were working on ways to cut spending on social programs, per usual, and then took a two week vacation. They can all collectively kiss my crack.

Speaking of political scandals, what brought Jim Wright, the speaker of the house in the late 80's down?

Sad thing is that with redistricting, it is apparently going to be extremely difficult for Dems to take back the House.
Plus there's the small matter of the Dems not having anything close to a cohesive agenda and message.
I'm praying, though.

An ethics investigation. He was using his **** book to earn public speaking fees outside the maximum allowance and his wife was given a "job" and given ****loads of perks in order to circumvent the rules & limits on gifts.

So, basically, they are almost literally stealing our money directly from us. They deny "us" money, and give themselves more money in the same breath. Balls, Big'uns.

AND about a week after cutting those social programs to "curb spending" they extended tax cuts (benifitted the wealthiest Americans) that totalled MORE than the social cuts, putting the budget even more in the hole. Rob from the poor, give to the rich.

Most definitely. He's a disgusting bastard. Personally, I was a bit surprised at just how much power he wielded as a simple representative.

He was on key committees: appropriations and intelligence, which makes his power so much more elevated.
