Anyone write it?

Read it?

Anyone freaked out by it?

Just thought this might be interesting ... I don't write it per say, but I do write fiction inspired by them

Just curious.

I used to write fan fic for soap opera characters (Simon & Katie from ATWT...I was a little obsessed) but writing about real people would be a little weird. I dunno...cuz they're real. That was an intelligent comment. Anyways...I could still probably get into it if anyone wanted to start something.

from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_fiction):

"Fan fiction (also spelled fanfiction and commonly abbreviated to fanfic or fic when used in a singular sense) is fiction written by people who enjoy a film, novel, television show or other media work, using the characters and situations developed in it and developing new plots in which to use these characters."

I loved the star trek Voyager fiction, did not mind me a little 'slash' (J/7)either , but fanfic with 'real' people for some reason freaks me out a little..

I have never written fan fiction.. the idea has never crossed my mind, although I once flirted online with someone by making up very short stories we'd post to one another. One of mine involved my relationship with Stevie's sister Breezy Nicks, who owned/ran a casino in Pheonix (or something like that). Another involved Sandra Bullock and I roller blading in Central Park- she had a fall, was in a coma for ages... and woke up believing we were an item... pretty stupid but fun at the time. But no, I've never seriously written a story about FM or Stevie.

Hmmm, let me guess.. P/K? Or C/P?? (must admit I loved some of those :o ) Some of the combinations were just crazy.. Dr/Tuv?!

Didn't realise it wasn't allowed on the Ledge ... oops. Is this discussion legit then? Hope I haven't started something anarchic ... :(

The real person thing is a bit strange alright. Generally it doesn't bother me, but when it comes to slash I think it's crossing the line. I would write fiction about the Mac but mine is more based on them, their songs and so on, not actually featuring them as named characters in their situation.

But slash fanfics involving real people is generally something I feel ought to be steered WELL clear of.

I used to be (and still am a little) addicted to X-Files fanfiction, which has been around since as early as 94-95, when internet just started. It's a very large community, and contains some of the most talented writers out there (some of who even write real novels and post using a different name) so oftentimes it's like reading a book. It's very fun and very addictive.

I can't imagine what Fleetwood Mac fanfic would be like though.

I don't see anything wrong in fanfiction, writing is always a good thing, IMO and I like to read some of them, related to some movies or series I like, sometimes there are even some good ideas in them. I've also written a couple, it's funny to try to be original on paths set in stone.

I've never understood why, or even how fanfic could be written about real people. If you're going to write about characters in a show or something, I could see that. I used to be active in the XFiles fanfic world... Certain stories were good, others, not so good. Most of it was written about Mulder nailing Scully, or whatever, since philes are a bunch of pervs.

But, yeah, real people fic? Never got it. Never will.

I don't really understand it either ...

I think it's more to do with a character inspired by the person. Because most of the time we [writers] don't actually know the person, we're writing about the person we perceive them to be.
A character based on a real person, just VERY heavily based on them.

Does that even make sense?

But that's sort of the point of it being fiction. :p Yes they're real people, but you take them and stick them in various situations that you conjure up and go with it. I sort of get a kick out of FM fan fiction, I think it can be an amusing outlet.

To be honest I don't even remember when we had that on this site though...i must have been in my 'all i do is take care of the baby' phase. I would guess maybe difficulties arose when one person writes something that pushes the envelope a bit-- they may think it's fine because 'it's just a silly story', while another person says 'that is so wrong, how can you even write about stuff like that, what if so and so reads it?' and so on. it's a fine line, and everybody has different boundaries as to what they think is 'okay' to write about. I'd imagine it might've stirred up some conflict.

but anyway that's just my two cents.

These things are enjoyable to the extent that 1) you are interested in the real-life people or events being fictionalized, & 2) the writer is good. My favorite roman à clef is a novel called "Curtains" by Michael Korda, which depicts in a fictionalized account the West End actors of the 1940s & 1950s -- the Mayfair crowd of Shakespeareans at the Old Vic, iincluding the Oliviers, Gielgud, the Richardsons, the Redgraves, the Quayles, &c.

I've written fanfic myself and find reading good ones enjoyable. Sadly, in the past couple of years, I haven't had time to do so. I'm pretty sure the fanfic group still exists although I haven't read it in a while.

I'm not quite sure why so many people find the concept of writing about real people so appalling. I didn't see too many people popping veins over Shakespeare in Love, for instance. Indeed, it won an Academy Award for Best Picture. I think the thing that usually bothers people about Stevie/Lindsey fanfic is that it's usually written in "romance novel" fashion and involves sex. The romance genre is dominated by women and thus the vast majority of men dismiss it - and also some women themselves, who have either bought into the misogynist diminishment of the genre or just aren't into it, lol. If you are one who enjoys romance novels and still find fanfic disturbing, it's usually because you prefer to keep any sexual fantasies involving real people in your head. That's understandable.

That's true. The vast majority of fanfiction writers are women -- I don't remember the figure -- and those who write slash fiction are almost _always_ women.

Uh, well, not much chance that Shakespeare would get to see that movie about himself, is there?
Whereas if you put your stories about living celebs on the net, there is a (tiny!) chance that they might come across them and read them. I guess that's what makes people feel uncomfortable about it. It is the same thing as preferring to keep those fantasies in your head: you don't want the other person to know about it, you don't want to embarrass them or yourself with it. But to each their own, really. If you don't like them nobody's forcing you to read them.

I see your point. Actually, I like reading romance novels (and am in the finishing stages of my own romance novel - though it's not typical of the genre by any means) and the fact that these fanfic stories are about real people isn't what bothered me about them (obviously, since I even wrote one myself... :cough: :cough: but we won't go there. :o ). My biggest gripe was the poor quality of much of the writing, but also the constant depictions of Kristen Buckingham as the "evil woman" or stories involving her death. Another irritating fact is that most Fleetwood Mac fanfiction writers seem to have tunnel vision. If it isn't strictly a love story between Stevie and Lindsey, it's not worthwhile to them.

Oh well, if she can laugh about herself a little, I guess it would be ok!She seemed to think it was pretty hysterical when Letterman was poking fun at her back in the '80s, and she's good friends with Sandra Bernhard, who's lampooned and parodied Stevie countless times over the years... so I think she probably has a pretty good sense of humour about herself.

Come to think of it, in 1997, Christine said that one of the things she was happiest about, in regards to the band's reunion, was seeing that Stevie's ability to laugh at herself had returned and that she was fun to be around again.

And if she can, praise the LORD!I don't know many people who CAN laugh at themselves during the lowest point in their lives. When someone is truly miserable, usually the first thing to go is their ability to find their situation humourous. That's why it's a low point, after all.

But I think the fact that she was able to pull herself back from that, and make amends with the people she hurt, shows a lot about her character. :)

Most of the band was looking mighty silly by the end of the 80's!

In fact, any of us who dressed up in the 80's better be ready to laugh and laugh and laugh.

I myself enjoy fanfic. I stumbled on a WONDERFUL story doing a search for info on Lindsey. Ive been happily reading fanfic ever since.

Mari, I also have a HUGE collection of Star Trek novels. they actually fill in a lot of gaps that the series left open. Particularly the first Vulcan/Human contact, the development of the warp drive (and the fate of Zephram Cochrane) the first starship, and Captain Kirk's young life (I also have one whose main character is Kirk's father). For me, it fleshes out that particular Universe, puts some meat on the bare bones that exist from the TV shows.
I like the stories about Spock's native planet....hell! I just like them all!
They arent literary masterpieces by any means, but they are familiar, and comfortable and they keep my favorite TV show characters alive

I don't know many people who CAN laugh at themselves during the lowest point in their lives. When someone is truly miserable, usually the first thing to go is their ability to find their situation humourous. That's why it's a low point, after all.

I don't know, I think humor and laughter are the best medicine for a low. Without laughter and a sense of humor (self-reflective at that) I don't think I could have weathered many bad things that have happened in my life. But I guess to each their own. Anyway, Stevie was way too "out of it" back then (late 80's to early 90's) due to drug use to even know which side was up much less crack a few good jokes about herself. But maybe what Chris was referring to was Stevie at the height of her career not the lowest point. I remember Lindsey saying that by the time of Tango he didn't even recognize Stevie anymore, (in the context of her super stardom), which I took to mean that he didn't recognize her because she was diva'ed out, high up in the rock and roll stratosphere and was totally self-absorbed and unlike the "girl he used to live with." i think it's harder for people to laugh at themselves when they take themselves too seriously and perhaps this is what Chris was referring to?

It was in interviews from around 1988 to the early '90s, that I thought she seemed rather humourless and way too serious about herself.

As for my own situation, I've always been able to laugh at myself (the King of Self-Deprecation), but during the years that I would consider the "low-point" in my life, I had no sense of humour -- most especially in regards to myself. That only came back once I started to come back.

Nope, I think she was the sister of the dude with the bill of his hat turned up.
She did look a lot like Madonna, though, especially the eyebrows and a little gap in the teeth.

Obviously, it's not Madonna. Her legs are together.

Of course there's variance in quality and content. You will find poor writers and disturbing subject matter in ANY genre. It's very easy to grab the worst stories and most egregious examples and dismiss everything else along with it, but it's not very fair.

And Vicky, you're right. The majority of Fleetwood Mac fanfic is, again, the romance novel type. Is this wrong? I don't believe so. People write about what they want to write about. Just because I want to read about one thing doesn't mean I'm going to disparage those who write about something else. If I don't like what I'm seeing I'll write something of my own (if only I still had the time!)

Oh I'm not saying it's all bad...

There were some well written tales (yours for example), but it's just that they seemed few and far between. Some stories were so poorly written that I never got past the first paragraph or two. Writing is my passion and is one of the few things I'm pretty good at, so it really annoys me when I'm trying to struggle through typos, spelling errors, poor grammar, and cliched or bland descriptions.

There's a board called Destiny Rules: True Love Never Dies or something like that out there, somewhere... It had all fanfic on it... Like 10 stories going at once.

I used to be so addicted to it... But then I pretty much read it all, and then became less interested.

There are some funny stories out there... I know one of them had Lindsey in the mob, while him and Stevie had a child and if he quit then the boss would go and kill Stevie or the baby... It was quite humorous.
