View Full Version : I Hate The Grammys

All that the "Academy" cares about is getting ratings and selling their cd they come out with every year. Mariah Carey and Paul McCartney should not be in the same sentece. They only way you can get nominated is if you had a "popular song" with the 12-21 age group. Or if you died or if your a real artist that might be older and had sort of a comeback.
A huge WTF for the Grammys. They have been going down hill for quite sometime. Its not about whats good its about whats popular.
The f**king Emancipation of Mimi. What the hell is that???? So juvenile. And John Legend with Ordinary People. That was probably the most annoying song of the year. Talk about repetition.
I can't wait till Hip-Hop goes away, I hate it. The music carries no meaning for me. Neither does this supposed "Rock" compliments of Fall Out Boy.
Whatever, I won't be watching The Grammys this year.
Brit

I have one more comment: On The Early Show, they just said people are comparing Mariah's comeback to Sinatra's comeback. Are you kidding me??? The world as we know it is coming to an end.

Well, yeah.

A huge WTF for the Grammys. They have been going down hill for quite sometime.

No they haven't. The Grammys have always been terrible, their decisions have always been questionable at best, and they've always been more concerned with awarding popularity than any other criterion, at least in the major categories that are broadcast on television. So take a deep breath, light a few candles, draw yourself a bath, and promise yourself that you'll never get upset about the Grammys again. They're not worth your ire, or any other of your emotions.

Don't hold your breath.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but there are plenty of people in the world who would say the same thing about Stevie Nicks.

I don't care for her, either, but rather than get angry, I'm just laughing. It's hilarious some of the folks she and her music are up against.

I happen to like Mariah Carey a great deal. I know that there are some cynical comments that can be made, some of which I would agree with. However, I will say that you should listen to some of her songs that aren't released as singles. I find her lyrics to be very uplifting and touching. They reach me in a similar way that Stevie's lyrics do. While I enjoy her "hits", a lot of times it's the lyrics to her other songs that are really touching. You should check out Petals, one of my favorite Mariah songs, and Bliss and Vulnerability. I think Mariah is very talented.

As for the Grammys, I haven't really agreed with their classificiations and nominees in a long time. I'm used to it. We live in a commercial world.

I deal with on other websites (Especially those which are Beatles related websites) say "Fleetwood Mac ceased to exist when Buckingham/Nicks joined".

As for the Grummies, Been a joke as long as I remember (ie-Jethro Tull wins Best Metal Album over Metallica)...Wonder which dead artist will be their poster person this year?

Thank God I have 180+ channels to choose from, I avoid any and all award shows these days!

amen. tho, I usually watch the very beginning and the very end just to catch what they think are the highlight performances.

I'm always excited to see who wins Best New Artist. It's always nice to know ahead of time that I'm not going to have to worry about hearing from these people ever again within a year's time. I'm torn between wanting to to go to Fall Out Boy or Keane...

Yeah, the telecast of the show kind of sucks now.. But I'm not sure why. Is it because I'm just not into as many of the artist nominated as I used to be when I was younger?... Or have they really changed the way they do things. I'll tend to believe the later...

The combination of types of music all lumpted together is sort of commical... But I have to agree with JazmenFlowers.. I like Mariah Carey too (and I'm no kid) - And this particular album "MIMI" is really quite good, with more then a few stand out tracks. And Kanye West,as pompus as he seems, deserves all the accolades he's receiving too - its another great cd.

Quite a few folks I've talked to have said that Fleetwood Mac ended when Peter Green quit, and that they've been a sham ever since. yes, the grammys are ridiculous. Its purely a popularity contest. You either have to sell a huge amount (even though your album could be appauling - "The Emancipation of Mimi" comes to mind), or you ahve to have something tragic happen to you, like Foxy Brown is nominated for "Come Fly With Me" for best rap female, which doesn't even have a video or an album, purely because shes making headlines because she has gone deaf! :(

lol, i cant believe people are sticking up for her, doesn't anybody think she is such a retard?

I like her music though - her newest album is alot better than charmbracelet, but she has gone too hip hop for my liking, her older stuff is lightyears ahead of anything she has done recentley :)

You got it right on the second count. There was tons of wonderful music released in 2005 (or rather, October 2004 through September 2005), but very little of it was nominated for any Grammys, at least in the major categories.

There are a few interesting/non-laughable races:

Best Rap Album features Common, Missy Elliott, Eminem, 50 Cent and Kanye West. Kanye will probably walk away with that one.

Best Alternative Music Album features Arcade Fire, Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, Franz Ferdinand and the White Stripes. I'm guessing Death Cab will take home that one (not sure why Arcade Fire are even in there, since Funeral was released in September 2004; and where the hell is Sufjan Stevens?).

I will admit that Mariah is talented. Personally I haven't liked anything she's done since her first CD (God, I started to type "album"), but that doesn't mean I don't think she has talent- just not my style of music. She's just such a ridiculous and awful person- tacky personified.

The whole Metallica/Jethro Tull thing was insane- I think I gave up on the Grammy's then. I like to watch the beginning to see what everyone is wearing. ;)

Why'd you stop? They're still called albums. People didn't stop calling them that when they switched to 33 1/3 LPs, or when cassette tapes were introduced. No need to drop the term because CDs are currently the dominant medium. And Mariah is, after all, nominated in the Album of the Year category.

There's really only room for one old fart/prestige/pity nomination in a major category like Album of the Year. Robert Plant has been releasing fairly consistent solo albums to little fanfare for a while now, so he certainly was not on the radar. I would imagine the Stones may have been considered, though, since they're a wildly popular live act whose new album received a fair amount of hype along the lines of, "Man, they've released a lot of awful crap in the past ten-plus years, but this one is surprisingly decent!" Of course, Paul McCartney has the exact same story this year, plus he's been crappier for a longer period of time, so that's probably why he won the nomination in the end.

The Stones are nominated for Best Rock Album, though. They're up against Coldplay, Foo Fighters, U2 and Neil Young. I'd say they've got a fairly decent chance of winning that one, actually.

Robert Plant is also nominated in a couple of categories. He's up for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for "Shine It All Around," against songs by Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Rob Thomas and Neil Young. And he's up for Best Hard Rock Performance for "Tin Pan Valley," against songs by Audioslave, Nine Inch Nails, Queens Of The Stone Age and System Of A Down.

As much as I could care less who wins what award, I am going to be watching for a couple of key performances. I really want to see what Keith Urban and Faith Hill will do together. I am mostly left flat with Faith's live performances. Hopefully she will kick it up a notch. I am most excited to see Christina Aguilera's song with Herbie Hancock. The name of the song is escaping me right now but it is on Herbie's CD that came out a few months ago. I know the Carpenter's recorded the same song back in the day. Like it was said before Grammys are all about record companies trying to promote their acts. Take Fiona Apple for example, she was trying to put out her new cd for like 4-5 years and fought with her record company and such. Now last year ( 05) it finally comes out, its not a bad cd but.... " POP ALBUM OF THE YEAR"....??? How did that get there??? Her record company got it there ... that's how...why.....more sales.

Just my2c

Ps... and because of such I have not watched in years.
