So i hear its the 50th anniversary of the Muppets...I didnt know they'd been around that damn long. I remember the Muppet Show as a staple of our re-run watching when I was growing up in the early 80s.
I like Gonzo 'cause he's always trying to seduce chickens. Dr. Teeth is cool 'cause he was based on Dr. John. And Statler & Waldorf, the two grumpy old men in the balcony are always funny...Lew Zealand just for the fact that he throws boomerang fish.
Anyway...so who's your favorite Muppet and why?

I've never liked muppets. Hate. I know, I'm a monster.
But I only liked Kermy on Sesame Street. I forgot why. I think it's because when he made his puppet mouth fold down, I thought it was hilarious.
I remember Miss Piggy made me want to gouge my seven year old eyes out.
In addition, I remember whenever cookie monster was on Sesame Street, I discerned with my super five year old brain power, that in fact all the cookies were being thrust out of his mouth when he chomped them, not actually being consumed. At the time, this was incredibly frustrating as wasting cookies is against my religion. In my older age I've grown a bit more tolerant, but I still cringe when cookies are wasted.
From the actual muppets show, which I saw about twice, I think the two old men would've been my favorite. They pretty much mirrored my sentiments, I think.
Yep, only liked cartoons, no muppets. I felt gypped by muppets. Might as well be humans, for all they couldn't do that cartoons could. Heck, they're actually even less mobile than humans.
Someone call me when there's a "What's your favorite Buggs Bunny cartoon?" thread. :wavey:

The saddest part of the this is in the fact that Jim Henson thought he simply had a "cold" and didn't bother getting checked by a doctor. His lungs aspirated after going to bed for the night at home.

I always thought it was flesh-eating disease. Necrotizing fasciitis, which is a rare bacterial disease. I remember this because the premier of my province at the time had also almost died of this. It is an infection that comes on incredibly fast - and is often fatal. (I also work in news, so I remember little details like this).
Okay - yeah - just did a quick search. Here's what I found:
http://www.jyi.org/features/ft.php?id=463
Flesh-eating disease⦠it sounds like the stuff of science fiction. It can spread through human tissue at a rate of 3 cm per hour. Twenty-five percent of its victims die, and in severe cases, the patient is dead within 18 hours. In 1990, it caused the death of Muppets creator, Jim Henson. It is small wonder that the media has given the disease such a dramatic, horrible-sounding name.
Unfortunately, this is not an excerpt from a science fiction novel, but rather a chapter from a bacteriology textbook. The medical name for this disease is necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and it is caused by a bacterium called Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A streptococcus (GAS).
There's more on the site above.

Yes I second this. There may even be a clinic around you where you can pay on a sliding scale or sometimes they are free. Usually when the fluids are colored it is a bacterial infection and require antibiotics to clear up. If they are clear then it is viral. Please take care of yourself!

It is an infection that comes on incredibly fast - and is often fatal. (I also work in news, so I remember little details like this).
This is an excerpt from People Magazine (1990):
How can a healthy man in his 50s succumb so abruptly to a garden-variety illness like pneumonia? To Dr. Edward Kaplan, an authority on streptococcal infections, Jim Henson's death was tragic but not unfamiliar. The organism that killed Henson, Group A streptococcus bacteria, is not rare, but it can occasionally cause an overwhelming infection that is unusually virulent. Studies suggest a recent unexpected uncrease in serious infections caused by the bacteria, which is highly deceptive: Early on, Group A strep can be mistaken for mere flu, but before a victim has even sought treatment, it may overwhelm the body with pneumonia, kidney failure or liver failure. A professor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota and director there of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Streptococci, Kaplan, spoke about Group A infections with correspondent Margaret Nelson.
Just what is Group A streptococcus?
It is one of an enormous variety of streptococcal bacteria. Group A streptococci can cause a number of diseases, from mild ones like impetigo to serious illnesses like scarlet fever. It is almost always associated with strep throat, and it is the only kind of streptococcus that causes rheumatic fever.
How is Group A bacteria contracted?
It us usually inhaled, but it can get into the body through a cut or abrasion.Once there, it likes to live in the respiratory tract, especially in the throat.
How often is it deadly?
We don't know. We don't have exact figures because doctors are not required to report strep diseases. We know only that Group A strep is a very rare cause of pneumonia. Lately, however, there has been evidence of a more virulent type, a meaner bacteria. One of the first reports appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in July 1989. On the 20 cases discussed, there was a 30 percent mortality rate, which is very high compared to most common forms of pneumonia. But I don't want to be an alarmist. This is a very rare disease.
What are the common symptoms?
They may be flu-like or they may be like a typical strep throat, with quick onset of fever, sore throat, perhaps nausea and vomiting. In those rare instances when the infection becomes more serious, it may involve other parts of the body within a day or so. Patients may go into shock and develop problems with the lungs, kidneys and liver and infections of the muscles. Once the bacteria gets a toehold, therapy may become more difficult even with large doese of antibiotics.
Since the first symptoms may be relatively mild, when should one seek medical care?
It's true, at first there may not be much that distinguishes a Group A infection from a bad case of the flu. But people should use common sense. If you suddenly become very ill-high fever, sore throat-seek medical care.
What is the treatment?
First, to identify the infections agent, usually through a throat culture. If it is Group A, an antibiotic, probably penicillin, is prescribed. A patient who is only mildly ill can expect to feel better in a few days. The penicillin also reduces the risk of rheumatic fever or other complications. With the more serious Group A infection, antibiotics are also used, often intravenously, but other medical and surgical therapies may be required.
Are children especially vulnerable to strep?
Strep throat has been called an occupational disease of schoolchildren. If you went into any schoolroom in the winter and did throat cultures, 5 to 20 percent of the children would have it, with or without any symptoms. In the past few decades parents may have become a little more complacent about strep throat because there have been so few complications. But these things tend to go in cycles, and they're beginning to increase again despite antibiotics. We don't know all the reasons why.

Exactly. Super rare disease and I was just sharing another article.
Interestingly enough, there is huge speculation that since Henson was a Christian Scientist, it was with that influence that he disregarded medical care and paid the ultimate price. Basically with CS beliefs, if God doesn't heal you, you're fuked.

Hey Demon...so glad you finally went to the Doc. Aren't you glad? Walking Pneumonia is not something to play with. Isn't it interesting how this Muppet discussion you started got you thinking about what you had and what happened to Jim Henson (a boyhood hero I've mine I might add). Glad you bit the wallet and took care of yourself. Heal fast.
On a side note, ever see the Jim Henson StoryTeller's show? It's on DVD now, the first Storyteller's and then the Greek Myths. Great stuff especially if I have insomnia.

Yeah Richard....I was looking up my symptoms at the time online and came across the Jim Henson story. It was scaring me actually because I dont recall ever having felt like I did. I am bullheaded and HATE going to the doctor, for any reason....well I let it go and it got out of hand, and I got sicker than I would have, had I just gone to the doctor. *sigh*....at least it kept me on my ass for 3 weeks and I didnt go out and blow money on booze.

For years, there has been been a debate as to whether or not Bert and Ernie were really gay. Speculation died down a bit after Bert was seen publicly with Pamela Anderson. The couple would frequently show public displays of affection.
http://home.worldonline.nl/~johannes6/pam.jpg
However, Muppet Insider has uncovered that the affair was infact a cover-up. Bert and Pamela have the same agent, and he felt that it would help both of their careers if they were seen being intimate in public together. Photos from a secret Muppet Insider agent discovered that not only were Bert and Ernie indeed an item, but would frequently have mad Muppet sex during their off time.
http://bateman.szanalmas.hu/upload/sithlords/iatjt.JPG
http://www.davidclement.com/dc-graphics/BertInErnieC.jpg
What was shocking, however, was the discovery that Kermit The Frog not only has a severe freebasing problem, and has nearly set himself a blaze on several occasions, but would have mad Muppet sex with any Muppet, puppet, or doll he could get his slimey green hands on.

What was shocking, however, was the discovery that Kermit The Frog not only has a severe freebasing problem, and has nearly set himself a blaze on several occasions, but would have mad Muppet sex with any Muppet, puppet, or doll he could get his slimey green hands on.

Exactly. Super rare disease and I was just sharing another article.
Interestingly enough, there is huge speculation that since Henson was a Christian Scientist, it was with that influence that he disregarded medical care and paid the ultimate price. Basically with CS beliefs, if God doesn't heal you, you're fuked.
I found this...
From the People magazine article "Legacy of a Gentle Genius":
By 2 A.M. Henson was having difficulty breathing and had been coughing up blood, though Jane [Henson] didn't know for how long. "I remember saying, 'Can we go to the hospital? Can we call a nurse, a doctor?' " she says. "But he said, 'just rub my back. Try to calm down my breathing.' At one point, he said, 'Maybe I'm dying.' He did say that. But, you know, whenever you're sick, you say, 'God, I feel like I'm going to die.' "
Still, he did not leave for a hospital. Part of the reason, says Jane, was his Christian Science upbringing. While he didn't practice the faith, "it affects his general thinking," says Jane. "Not that he mistrusted doctors, but he would rather just see it through by himself."
The more critical reason was that he just didn't want to bother anyone. "I think he knew there was a possibility he was dying," says Jane, "and that possibly was why he didn't want to go to a doctor. He really didn't want anyone else to be disturbed by his pain."
The "maybe I'm dying" thing is haunting. I understand old beliefs continuing to affect your general thinking though. It's hard to change the fundamental principles that are drilled into your head for so long even after you come to a place where you don't believe in them any more.
And guys...those pictures...OH MY GAWD!

I loved the two guys in the balcony ragging on the rest of the muppets during The Muppet Show. Even then I had an appreciation for snark. ;)
Man, that used to be my favorite show as a kid. The skit that was a protest against hunting done to the tune of "something's happenin' here... what it is ain't exactly clear..." still stays with me today. It also happened to be the first time I'd ever heard the song, lol.

but my little brother LOVED the cookie monster from SS..actually to be more accurate I'd say he thought he WAS cookie monster. Which worked out perfectly for me since mom made chocolate chip cookies all the time!

I don't believe your pappy
He may be rich, but he ain't happy
He tells you 'bout work and you want to be him
But when was the last time you got to see him?
He works hard, but why
So you can go out and buy
A bunch of sh*t that you don't need
Driven by your punk ass wants and greed
That's why
I say
F*ck it.
For the first time in my life
I'm a finally free
No mansion for me
I say f*ck it.
No brand new Humvee
I say f*ck it.
But you'll get no p*ssy
F*ck it.
What you don't understand
Is I make love to my hand
So I don't need you honey
I can beat my d*ck like it owes me money
F*ck it!
