Old Pete won the last round. But could he write a song as genius as Sussudio and would South Park name a hill after him? I think not. All the hip hop crowd love Phil bizarrely enough. Why is that?

As much as the mention of Phil Collins makes me grimace, I do love me some "Susudio."

However, I think I've got to sit this round out. Lovely ladies, but none of them really do much for me.

Me loves the Natalie Merchant.

I have been in love with her music since In My Tribe. That record reminds me so much of such a great time in my life. I can remember my friends and I in this girl's way cool loft in New Orleans just jamming to that and then driving to Carmel from San Fran in my friends Alfa with the top down, which for those who have never done it, is one of the most beautiful rides in the world. She is just amazing to me and I find her lyrics stunning and thought provoking. Amongst my fav. is "four poster dull torpor - pulling downward" - greatness.

Did you see her Storytellers? Very good.

Yeah, me too. Oh, wait, I guess they do do something for me - bore me. (okay, I don't know who Maria Mckee is, but the other two....) If I had to judge just the voice, Sarah would win. Sarah's voice is massive. Pretty, nuanced, facile...still she bores me, though, usually.
I know Natalie's lyrics are deep and good, but without the vocal dynamism, I can only barely be bothered to care. My favorite songs "by her" are Because the Night and Peace Train. If you see what I mean. If you don't, I mean that I like her when someoene else's songs push her to a more interesting vocal capacity, but otherwise all her great lyrics might as well be trapped in a San Franscisco fog for all the dynamism she imparts. And I hate fog.
It's really a shame. Natalie = great lyrics, boring vocal and midling live performances.
Stevie = lyrics? who gives? If they're good, that rocks, but it doesn't really matter when she busts that stellar strange passionate vocal. I am rarely compelled solely by lyrics. Even Bob Dylan, who's lyrics are tantamount to me - I like his vocal delivery as well. I've said it before, and I'll say it now - If i want good lyrics, I can always read. You have to bring that other thing.

I guess having Sharon add Maria McKee at the last moment wasn't a good idea. For those of you who don't know of her, she used to front the band Lone Justice. They were always on the fringe of really making it and most who know of Maria can't understand why she isn't more well known. She has a powerful voice and if you ever get the chance to see her in concert - go!
I ended up going with Natalie because she was missing from all the other face offs and she is one of just a few artists I would travel that horrid trip between LA and San Diego to see. You never see the same show twice with Natalie. I saw her at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus and it will always be one of the best shows I have ever seen. And to think I thought it would be all over for her when she left 10000 Maniacs!

Can I still change my vote? Probably not..
I clicked Sarah McLachlan, very late last night, but now after a cup of coffee I'm thinking, Ah no, Maria McKee!! How did I miss that!

What a performance. She is incredible. She is the light in some of my darkest moments even supplanting La Nicks, which, as you know, is not an easy thing to do.

You have great taste! I love the drive from SF to Carmel. Just wonderful.

I have the pleasure of knowing one of her bandmates on the Live CD. He plays percussion and co-engineered the record, which is my fav: Live in Central Park. He always wanted me to meet her cause he thought she and I would get along really well. Never happened.

Also, I'm sad that she's losing this round for that pain stricken Sarah McClackey. Can't stand her and I don't care if she designed the "S" in Stevie's last album.

Natalie Merchant, her voice has more personality IMO, even if Sarah McLachlan brings a lot of light weth her singing.
