View Full Version : The Last Movie You Ever See

I think we would all agree that we want to die to Faure's "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, or the Beethoven Arietta from Op. 111.

But what movie would you want to watch if it were the last you ever saw? Would you pick something tranquil & stately -- something from classic Japanese cinema perhaps? Something that grapples with profound concerns -- something by Bergman or Tarkovski? or would you watch something wild & twisted & angular & extremely modern?

Something riotously funny -- some Keaton, Lloyd or Laurel & Hardy?

While I like those, I want to die to "The Ode to Joy," the 4th movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th symphony. I imagine it being like the scene from "Immortal Beloved" where he is floating out of his body and into the stars.

So buautiful - even if the translation lessens the effect of the words -

Joy, bright spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread
Thy sanctuary.
Thy magic power re-unites
All that custom has divided,
All men become brothers
Under the sway of thy gentle wings.

Whoever has created
An abiding friendship,
Or has won
A true and loving wife,
All who can call at least one soul theirs,
Join in our song of praise ;
But any who cannot must creep tearfully
Away from our circle.

All creatures drink of joy
At nature's breast.
Just and unjust
Alike taste of her gift ;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can fell contentment,
And the cherub stands before God !

Gladly, like the heavenly bodies
Which He set on their courses
Through the splendour of the firmament ;
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.

You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world !
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions ?
World, do you know your Creator ?
Seek Him in the heavens !
Above the stars must He dwell.

As for a movie - so many come to mind. Maybe "Born Yesterday" or "Sunset Blvd." - I also would kill to get a complete print of Swanson's "Sadie Thompson."

Wozzeck would be nice. With that child hopping around at the end on his horsey toy, not realizing that both of his parents are dead.

I want to hear Monserrat Figueras singing to me when I die. Just her voice. Well ok, Jordi Savall can play too.

The movie? Will I get to watch it to the end, or might I expire while watching? If it is the former, than I choose "Ryan's Daughter" by David Lean
If it is the latter, than I choose something without plot, but with amazing imagery: "Baraka".

*Harold and Maude was the runner up - I love Hal Ashby!

The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear

*snip*

After seeing that movie I had to rent everything with Gary Oldman. In fact, it even got me to watch Harry Potter  (true!)

but for this poll.. uh..

Being John Malkovich, that's somewhere near the top of my list for sure.

Blah. I don't even like horses or ponies. They freak me out.

I just want to see if you'll eventually break under my constant demands. I think I've been asking for a pony for at least six years now.

1926, the Kirsanoff!

Well, I'd rank that #47, the 1936 however comes at #666.

How about Flodder though?

My last movie would have to be Chocolat. All the scenes of dreamy chocolate, the angel face of Juliette Binoche, and the whimsical tale of this fictional village and people send me into a dreamy state of being.

Touch Of Evil
Great Expectations
Ginger e Fred
Une femme infidele
Il giardino dei Finzi Contini
Shall We Dance? (with Astaire & Rogers)
Profumo di donna
The Killer
Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie
Secrets & Lies
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Hanabi

If I knew I was dying and had the time I would watch my 4 favorite movies in this order: Doctor Zhivago, Psycho, Terms of Endearment, and finally Almost Famous. I love Cameron Crowe. Life should be like a Cameron Crowe film complete with a well chosen soundtrack
