View Full Version : A thought occured to me about Fleetwood Mac

The whole John McVie posting thing got me thinking, it seems to me that of all of the "Big time" classic rock bands or most others for that matter, that Fleetwood Mac is the most approachable for the fans. Having met Lindsey and Mick and Peter Green I can tell you that all three of them were very gracious and polite to me and they were willing to talk to me for a few minutes and didnt just say Get the F**K outta here. Almost all of the stories I've heard from other fans are the same. I dont know if I've ever heard of a Mac fan that's had an ecounter with a member that said they were treated rudely. I'd love others thoughts on this, as well as if other bands are as friendly as Fleetwood Mac is.:)

I agree. I met Mick twice and he seemed very approachable. :)

Eh, I think the crown of most approachable goes to Roger McGuinn. He communicates with fans through e-mail all the time. He used to be a regular poster on the Byrds newsgroup (though left because a few posters were dicks). In fact, he's become good friends with a lot of his fans and has actually performed privately (for FREE, btw...Stevie) for his fan friends. He's actually turned down millions of dollars for a big-time Byrds reunion (he's the only hold-out), preferring to do small gigs for his REAL fans, not the folks who all of the sudden are told they are trendy (the Dance).

While not "rock," I have to say that Peter, Paul, & Mary are very approachable, too. One of my favorite memories is Peter Yarrow talking to me about the things that were going on in El Salvador back when I was about twelve. I've been a folkie ever since, though thanks to Lindsey and McGuinn, found a way to rock with it!

Now, I do have to say that Peter Green sort of told me off when I met him. But, I thought that was actually pretty cool.

Aerosmith stayed in the hotel where I worked, and they were incredibly approachable and down to earth. Everyone from their manager, roadies, security, etc. I wish I had a scanner so I could post my picture of me and Steven Tyler.

(And may I just add that he is SUPER hot in person)

Well...we kind of were told hands off. OKAY DAVID, I'll tell my whole story...

Okay so anyway, they came to stay in the hotel and we were told that we were not allowed to approach them in the lobby, etc. We were told to close the bar early on Saturday night because they wanted to have a private party. I was a horrible manager that night b/c I acted like a freaking 15 year old. We cranked only Aerosmith music all night.

They didn't show up.

On Sunday night, the other bartender and I were drinking coffee, doing the weekly crossword puzzle (I even had my GLASSES on) when in walked the band. The only other people in the bar were two youngish guys sitting on the other end. So Steven Tyler walks up to me and asks me what kind of non-alcoholic beer we sell. Shaking like a leaf, I told him and he asked me to get him one. I poured it and as I was handing it to him, I blurted out, "I can't believe I'm waiting on Steven Tyler!" to which he SCREAMED in my face! Like, "AAAAAAAAAAH"! It was really funny. Anyway, he wanted to go into the kichen to meet our chef, so I took him back there, totally not believing that I'm chatting with Steven Tyler. They ended up hanging out with us all night. OH! At that time, I had the Buckingham-Nicks CD playing, and Steven said, "I love Fleetwood Mac- you guys have really good taste in music" (obviously I wasn't going to correct him on the FM thing).

Oh, I could just go on and on with that story (about how I got hit on by the one of roadies, who actually turned out to be Steven Tyler's step-son or something ridiculous like that), but I'll leave it there. :o

I also met Maya Angelou (fabulous), Kathy Lee Gifford (heinous), Henry Kissinger (he asked me for directions to the men's room), Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter, Guns-n-Roses (predictably trashed their room), and Patti Labelle (mentioned in another thread). I can't think of any others right now, but I know there were more.

I met Mike Score of AFOS a few times...nice every single time...and Howard Jones...(he grimmaced at me, gave me an autograph, and said nothing). Was 5 feet away from Rob Zombie...he refused to give the 10 fans in line autographs, or the time of day....so we mooned his bus as it left the parking lot...

Justin Guarini. Have met him twice. The first time at a premiere in Burleson, Texas for From Justin to Kelly and the second time, down in Beaumont, Texas. In Beaumont, he sang a few songs before Aaron Carter (bleh), then left. We went outside to wait for him to leave and the limo pulled out of the back of this garage. The car drove away and we are screaming "Justin, please come back!", the car got to the street, then turned around. He stayed for over an hour with us. At first, only a handful of us were out there, but when folks saw Justin out there, more and more kept coming over. He gave EVERYONE an autograph and photo. Got a great hug too. ;) I gave him a gift and a card.

What was the gift? Lindsey's Out of the Cradle CD. :D

No, please do. ;)Sure, and It's hotel related. WHen they played in Minnesota in 2003 I found out through a friend what hotel the band was at while they were here. I figured that with them doing 2 shows, the morning of the second show would be the best time to try to meet one of them because I figured they would be relaxed. So on th morning of June 20, 2003, I showed up in the hotel lobby and sat in this lounge that was like off to the side of the front desk. I was way too nervous to try to sit right by the front desk, because as I'm sure you know, I wouldve been kiced out right away if they knew why I was there. ANYHOO, after about 2 hours of nothing, I decided to ball up and go sit by the front desk and act real casual like I belonged there. I even bought a New York Times. Anyway, I sat and potitioned myself right across from where the elevators were and held the paper in a manner where each time the door would open I would lower the paper just enough to see who was getting off. It worked, cause at about 10:20 the elevator door opened and out stepped none other thatn Lindsey Buskinham in the flesh all by himself, no security. I was so nervous, I said a prayer "God let me keep my composure" I mean I'd worked so hard to make this happen, I wasnt gonna **** it up now. SO I calmly stood up and walked over to Lindsey, extented my hand and said "Hey Lindsey, great show last night." we ended up talking for about 15 minutes, just me and him. I wont ever forget it. And he was so courteous and polite. I was amazed. I eman he actually wanted to hear whT I had to say, it wasnt just like, GO AWAY at all. then finally after about 15 min, I asked him before he had to go if he would mind if I had a picture taken with him. He said no problem at all, and the picture in my sig is it.:) I thanked him for taking a few minutes out of his day to talk to me and he said "It's no problem. I enjoyed talking to you." and on he went. Of course I was immideately asked to leave the hotel, but very nicely. I didnt argue and was outta there. There you have it. What u think?

Diss, I know that's not what you meant by your post, but on first read, it was incredibly insensitive to anyone who's been seriously ill. It reminds of of the kind of insensitivity I saw once when a bunch of my friends and I were forced to do an incredibly huge amount of walking (labour dispute, picket line, blah blah), and someone asked my friend who's in a wheel chair, "hey.. *nudge nudge* how could I get me one of those?" Her reply? "Get in a car accident and break your back."

You see my point?

Dish!
She had just had her first baby (Cody?) when she came to stay with us. Marriott provides cribs to guests. They are just very basic cribs, and don't have any of that bunting stuff (I think that's what it's called). Anyway, she had a FIT and sent hotel employees running out for this stuff (bumpers- that's what it's called!). So someone went out and got her some for the crib, but she didn't like the pattern, so they had to go back out and get what she wanted, at the hotel's expense. We had to get her all kinds of special foods, she wouldn't let anyone clean her room while she was staying, so when the housekeepers went in at the end of her stay it was trashed. She was unfriendly to all the staff and she was just basically extremely demanding and unattractive. I had seen her once before when I went to the ILive With Regis and Kathy Lee show with some friends when I lived in NY and she was nasty then. As soon as they went to commercial, she became surly and quiet. She's heinous looking too. She's so thin that she looks emaciated. Nasty person.

Now how did you meet Mick?THat was at the hotel in Cleveland as they were on their way to soundcheck. He came over to sign autographs for the fans, and my friend who was with me was practically ****ting herself, cause she's a drummer and idolizes Mick. SO right as he's done signing, I knew my friend wouldnt have the balls to ask, so I said "Excuse me Mr. Fleetwood, would my friend get a picture with you?" My friend gave me this look that I can only describe as pure astonishment. Mick said sure, so my friend went over and I took one of her with him, then I asked if I could have one too, my friend took that one. Before he left, I thanked him for working so hard to keep Fleetwood Mac together all these years, and that I would never had a chance to see them live if he hadnt. He seemed touched by my comment and said "Thank you very much. That means alot to me." Then he went on his marry way.:)

Wow I didn't know that. That's good to hear. I've only ever heard about the bad stuff (that's typical ).Yeah, often the "bad stuff" gets talked about the most, because it's the juiciest. Thankfully though, it seems that the majority of people have had positive experiences with Stevie. And even though it is rare for her to spend an extended period of time talking with a fan, she has done it (even as recently as the 'Say You Will' Tour), and is typically warm and cordial even when she can't. But I'm sure she gets tired and crabby like the rest of us, and that's why some fans have been left cold by their interaction with her.

Overall, I imagine she's also the most guarded of the band members (both personally and by her security), because she's had so many run-ins with crazed fans and stalkers.
I don't recall ever hearing that Lindsey has had a stalker, so he's probably a little less cautious.

Yeah, often the "bad stuff" gets talked about the most, because it's the juiciest.

Incidentally, that day I met Mick when they were going to soundcheck, stevie came out of the hotel comepletely surrounded by her people.

You both, no doubt, deserved what you got!

 :] :] :blob2: :]
All night I was trying to think of something that isn't necessarily a compliment to say to him. The only thing I could think of was "Thanks for introducing me to the blues," explaining "Fleetwood Mac In Chicago" was my first blues album. He basically said that really he didn't give a **** what my first blues album was. What made the moment classic was the "what an idiot" look Nigel Watson gave me. Good stuff!
