What do you think?

Tonight in my Family Law class, my teacher was talking about genetic tests and a bunch of other stuff. Anyhoo, in one of his examples, he said something like..."maybe the mom doesn't know who the father is. Maybe something something she's a WHORE and slept with two people in one week. Which is GROSS!"
He said Whore and Gross. He was judging a theoretical person's sexual activity. But not just judging in his head, but using the words "whore" and "gross" out loud to us.
Bet you can guess if I thought it was inappropriate or not...

That was incredibly inappropriate. I hate it when professors get away with saying crap like that in class.
Oh, good.
He's a good teacher, and a nice man, but that was bad. :)
I have a "thing" about people judging other people on their sexual activities, and using words like "whore" and "skank". Which actually don't describe any personality qualities of a person, but connotes the person is bad based only on their sexual partnerships. Hate.
On the upside, some girl asked me if I worked in a Family Law office b/c it seemed from my comments and stuff that I knew a lot about it. Oh, and she worked in a Family Law office. So, I guess I don't sound dumb in class....:p
I was going to say something to the prof., but I chickened out. Sigh.
Anyway, it's weird, because of course he is very liberal in general. I've noticed, though, that lots of liberal people still haven't shed these old standards of judgement. It's too bad.

Yeah, not very cool. Totally inappropriate, and I loathe the sexual double standard that still exists.

I don't think that was appropriate. Using such strong words like that was not necesarry.

I would go as far as saying something to this teacher...not cool.

I was thinking of saying something next week, but the moment will be lost....

Sounds like a good opportunity for discussion. Judgemental and Inappropriate ? Hmmm.

He is probably being a bit cavalier in letting his attitudes spill over into his teaching. What do his opinions have to do with the point he was trying to make ?

I don't know that I would call anyone a whore for sleeping with two people in a week, but I would call some who had unprotected sex with two people in a week an idiot. Certainly not a whore. Calling it gross is probably in the eye of the beholder.

The word judgemental is a bit overused. We're all judgemental. Thankfully. Without judgement we would be aimless.

Technically, I didn't use the word judgemental. Of course we all are. But this one is stupid. :D
Gross is in the eye of the beholder. I still think it's bad to say in that situation. He often lets his views spill over, but no others have been offensive... And you know I'm not the kind of person that thinks many things are inappropriate.
And calling someone an Idiot for doing what you said is acceptable to me. (btw, the story "The Idiot" by Dostoevsky is good)
I don't think his judgement or his venue was appropriate in this case. But then, like I said, I have a "thing". And it's not because I'm a ho, it's because I think it's wrong. Always have. Have never, ever, ever, even thought of using/judging people about that. There are so many more relevant things to judge people about.

That's very inappropriate. Teachers shouldn't be allowed to say stuff like that. :distress:

I found that a lot of my teachers make comments, but I don't tend to worry about them because I agree...I think there is a lot of double standards in what is appropriate to discuss in class or not...but that's just my opinion, I just generally find that it is often the more liberal teachers willing to talk their opinions up.

I usually agree, too. And I hardly ever find anything inappropriate. And almost everyone is liberal where I live.
This one was different, though.
And I would submit that a truly liberal teacher shouldn't have that particular judgement.
But I'm not going to die or anything. I probably will say something, though, I'm sure he'll appreciate my honest feedback....  Or maybe not. We'll see.

I hope you are OK, although I don't see how the crash and the Stevie forum are related. Oh, you probably only have time to check one forum.

Are you ok? :( :xoxo: :distress:

Yer, I'm fine, I have just found myself in last week only checking the Stevie forum as much because I am organising trying to send out Women's Weekly magazines to people. I am very fatigued from it but no actual physical injuries a.

I rolled the car twice after hitting a gutter at only 60km/hr so I am very lucky, I am trying to get back in to swing of things now

well thank goodness.
wait - you rolled the car?!?!? :xoxo:
Yes, you are lucky.
But otherwise it's good to hear that you are merely busy. :xoxo:
I want the mag, too, but I'm not a super collector girl, not by trade...I'm sure I'm missing out on some money, or cool stuff, but I just want to see the pics, read the article, hear the music, and log it in my mind.

(Okay, I'd like the one mag, though. Because it has unusual pics, mainly. but I can't lie and say I'll ever "use" it again. Collecting just for the sake of collecting is out of my brainwave now. I wish it wasn't, I wish I was more money savvy, and covetous, -

but I just want to hear good songs/see good videos! That's the only thing I *really* care about. The ephemeral.
I used to collect things, but what it ends up as is things that clutter your house. I just want to hear/see the performances, mainly.:) To me hearing the band live, or just Stevie live, doing the most strangest cool things, is my best reward. )
It's sweet that you are Magazining peops after your accident. :woohoo: That is very cool indeed.
It was also cool that Luxor transcribed that one women's weekly (or whatever) article. That kicked ass. ASS!
I know it's biased, but it kicked even more ass b/c Lux doesn't even like/know much about Stevie. When the pics were first posted, I was pissed off b/c mainly I wanted to read the article. And then Luxor solved my prob. :)

Hm, it's kind of sexist, isn't it. I mean, there's a double standard there, women are more likely to be called 'whore' for doing that kind of thing than men, and that's the offense I might take when hearing such a comment.

Did he say it in all seriousness, or was he kind of joking?

Either way, is it really that big a deal? You said he's a good teacher. So he said one thing one time that you didn't agree with and found inappropriate. Don't we all. Take a deep breath and move on.

No, he wasn't joking at all. He was very vociferous, actualleh. (ak-chew-uh-leh)

I believe I said before that I wouldn't die.

But then, I hardly think anything is offensive. We can say it's not a big deal, and move on, and again I'm not going to die.
But I still think it's hella lame. I'd rather find some way to change his thinking about "whores" and what that means, but that is quite the challenge.
Sesly, though, that was totally weak. What a petty insignifigant thing to judge people on. And then he is a teacher and he said it out loud!
Okay, yeah, I do find it pretty offensive.
To me it's kinda like a racial slur or something. It is THAT illogically insulting.
and I'm not even a ho. lol.

It's a bit like saying...for instance..."poor people don't want to work!" or...."black people something something!" or "homeless people blahdeserveit!"

It's one of those "tiny" things people ignore, that are still wrong. *shrug*

Whatever I do, it will probably be polite. :) Which is probably why I didn't say something this eve.

Obviously, it's not a massive deal in practice.

In the way that there won't be a bunch of action surrounding it.

This person's overall intent is very good.
I understand people say things.

But in my head, and to my sense of logic, it's pretty effing important.
I really think it is wrong.
Really.
And again, I'm not a person who thinks much is inappropriate, but this qualifies. :)

If he doesn't know, perhaps I could kindly apprise him of the other side's opinion about what he said. That seems polite. :woohoo:
Maybe he has just not thought logically of the ramifications of his opinion.

Yeah. Again, I chickened.
I was thinking of saying something next week, but the moment will be lost....I don't think chiding this teacher is the best route. I think a comeback right in class, something like: "Two guys in a week? What a crime ... especially if she had five guys knocking at her door."

I don't think chiding this teacher is the best route. I think a comeback right in class, something like: "Two guys in a week? What a crime ... especially if she had five guys knocking at her door."

Yeah. Exactly.
It was hard to formulate a snappy comeback at the time, because he was very serious and disgusted about the whole thing. Passionate, if you will.
And I'm not that good at that, anyways. Sigh. I think I only just had a dirty look on my face the rest of the class. Hardly maturely effective. But I couldn't help it...
Wait - isn't a comeback chiding? Chiding is teasing, kind of, right? Sooo...wouldn't a snappy comeback have been chidulous?
I actually thought that saying something maturely and calmly and logically and unemotionally after class would have been the best way. If i had been capable of that, i probably would have done so. (although, in theory, we should all probably applaud any diplomacy I might be able to manage.)

To bad you were not there.

Oh, I know, you could wear a scarlet "A" to class, and see what happens. In fact, get some other men and women to wear them, but never say a word!

I think what your professor said is completely inappropriate, however, I would not say anything to him until the grades are in. My dimestore psychology, and 70's rap group experience says he has some issues to process, and you might not want to get into it.
It's too bad that he let the comment slip (and even worse that he has that opinion) especially if he is a good teacher, because I am sure there are many students who have lost respect for him. Words like that can get a teacher into a lot of trouble. If you like him, otherwise, you could send him a letter after the class has ended, and tell him how disappointed you were. If you don't, you can zing him in the evaluation at the end of the session.
