A MESSAGE FROM LINDSEY 01.01.2005

Since the Fleetwood Mac tour ended in September, Lindsey has been working on a new project. We received this update from Lindsey:

"It was great to see everyone out on the road this last year. I'm feeling more creative than ever right now, and I’m working on a new solo project which I expect to have out sometime this year. Thanks for your support!"

Check back for the latest updates on Lindsey's solo project!

It is now almost one year later and not only do we NOT have a solo project but we have received NO updates about the progress of it.
I sometimes wonder if Lindsey has no concept of time.
Do you think that we will ever see the solo project and maybe a tour? I don't know I would like to give Lindsey the benefit of the doubt but when you take over 2 years to release your DVD it is kind of hard to have faith.

Pattie - It is hard to have faith in him, but I did hear that he will be spending the rest of this year finishing up on the cd, he is soooo meticulous about his songs, everything has to be perfect, ya know, , I believe he will go on his solo next year sometime !!! I sure hope so, I am getting as impatient as you are !! I can't wait , though !!!!

I know but I just wish that we would get some news from him. Even if it just that he is still working on the solo project. I hate to say it but it as if he doesn't want us to know anything.

Perhaps he will surprise every one of us with a brand new Gift of Screws on our doorstep sometime soon. If he told us about it, it wouldn't be a surprise now would it? He has computer hacking and stalking capabilities doesn't he?

Yeah, who knows maybe he is emailing Santa our addresses right now.

Maybe by "and I’m working on a new solo project" he meant the one new song on that movie soundtrack and the editing of the Soundstage thing.

As for a new record - I am not holding my breath.

I do not know if it is a pride thing, a contractual thing, etc. - but why he does not release GOS on a website is just beyond me.

Do you think that we will ever see the solo project and maybe a tour? No, no, no, no & no. ... in short order.
I don't know I would like to give Lindsey the benefit of the doubt but when you take over 2 years to release your DVD it is kind of hard to have faith. Why would you like to give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to releasing albums? Doesn't that put you consistently on the side of having erred?

It's not good for your stomach lining. The hydrochloric acid will eat away at it.

I'd like to see his few remaining fans (most of them are probably on this forum) forget about him. That might be the only remaining factor in this world that would convince him to actually release some music -- because it's become more than apparent (to any but the most braindead clod) that nothing else in 25 or 30 years has been able to have that effect.

I'm a "proof-is-in-the-pudding" guy. When I see someone handle his solo music career the way Lindsey has, I can only conclude that he doesn't want to market his music to anyone. And if he doesn't want to, why prod him? It's like trying to force your kid who loves baseball & nothing else to start waxing cars for a hobby.

I know for a fact that there will be a solo cd, just don't have the timetable for it - hopefully it will be soon !

It seems so solipsistic, and almost contradictory compared to the way he goes about things with Fleetwood Mac. With the band it's always about trying to milk the cash cow as much as possible for as long as possible, and then he goes back to his solo career where it seems as though he doesn't even have any interest in putting his music out there at all, let alone making any money from it.

And then you've got Soundstage, a truly bizarre entry in his catalogue. Out of nowhere, a guy who's only ever once toured on his own releases a live DVD that's more than half filled with previously unreleased songs and relatively obscure album tracks, which almost makes you think that he actually does want to get his music out to his fans.

How do you figure this guy out?

Angelick Witch
11-27-2005, 03:58 PM
Well, I still believe in him! I really don't think he has any concept whatsoever of time though. Poor man...

And I think he has so few fans _anyway_ that if having very few fans is what motivates him, he's _never_ going to do it. Maybe we should send him a petition or something?

It surely is frustrating when other people can put out so much music (much of it pure and utter dog crap) and Lindsey has so little solo material. I am sure he's working on his solo, and I'm still going to hold out hope for that to come out SOMETIME next year and for him to go on a mini tour before FM go on their (perhaps last) she-bang. Call me stupid (I'm sure some will LOL), but I like to hold onto hope.

No, it won't happen. Anyone who thinks a new solo cd is a definate, doesn't know much about Warner Brothers. Just because LB works on solo music does not mean it will ever be released. :shrug Warners hasn't backed a solo LB project in over a decade. They are interested in the Mac only. I wish they would just drop him already so he in fact COULD go the internet/independent route, if he wanted to.

I agree with whomever said his Soundstage dvd was the solo project he was working on last year. The fact Lindsey used to word 'project' in the blurb instead of 'album' stood out to me. Lindsey did manage to get that out this year, as promised.

Well, Lindsey did say that his Soundstage was going to air last April. It seems to me that he was talking about a solo album and tour but that was as of last September. I guess we will see what 2006 brings.

Can he release the solo project on a label other then Warner's? Maybe that might be part of the hold up.

I can't imagine Warner gives half a **** whether they have him on their roster as a solo artist. Would they really bat an eye if he told them he wanted to move to another label? Unless they're smart enough to realize that the guy writes and records so little music, and takes so much time doing it, that they're better off just stringing him along for a few years and letting him record stuff for a "solo" project, then in the final stages forcing him to call up Stevie and the boys and turn it into a Mac album.

I'm about there, at least in terms of this. I no longer believe we will ever get a solo project. I'd love him to prove me wrong but I highly doubt it.

Lindsey has been working on his solo, regardless of what everyone thinks. I know this for a fact !!!! It was supposed to be done earlier this year, but he's still working on it, it will take till the end of the year and HOPEFULLY, he will release it sometime next year. I am not talking bull****, I know 1st hand that yes, he has been working on this all year long !!!! I won't say how I know this, but trust me, I do know!! Give him a break - he is working on it - give him a little more time !!! I think whenever it does come out, it will be better than OOTC !!!!!

Edit: LINDSEY#1FAN, it's not that I doubt you. I'm sure you've been told that. But we've been told similar things from such "reliable sources" as his website (as mentioned above) and an announcement on his Behind the Music and guess what? It hasn't happened. "Working on it" is a long way from releasing it. He's been "working on it" for quite some time. As I said before I'd love to be proven wrong.

Although... he keeps saying he's working on it but it seems inconceivable it would take so much time. Sometimes I wonder if we're not all being fed a bunch of BS, if it's something else besides the songs "not being ready" that's holding it up. Edit #2: I see other people have already suggested this in the thread. That's what I get for replying before reading it all.

And of course, we've been told similar things in the past as well, most notably from Lindsey himself on The Dance.

"Still working on, actually..." He'd been "working on it" for four years at that point, and six years later, the project was scrapped completely and folded into a Fleetwood Mac album instead.

If he's got other things he wants to do with his time besides record and release his music, if he's got a life he wants to live, then more power to him, I certainly don't begrudge him that. But he should be ashamed of himself the way he constantly dangles that "new album" carrot in front of his fans' faces without ever delivering.

It's as though we're all in an abusive relationship with the man. He smacks us around a little, promises he won't do it again, then we go around making excuses and apologies when people ask about our black eyes because we think we can change him. I'm glad to see some other folks in this thread refusing to believe him anymore. It's time to take back the night from Lindsey Buckingham!

That's like saying you plan on having your ulcer until the end of the year.

I can't imagine a scenario where he would leave a quarter of a million bucks (or more) worth of recording equipment at his old house. In fact, THAT could be the hold up on his new album...he hasn't got his home studio rebuilt in the new digs yet.

People find it hard to believe that I go back so long. But as far as Lindsey is concerned, this is a pattern I have seen repeated -- & I'm not exaggerating -- probably thirty times. So skepticism is really quite healthy in this context.

I've heard & seen "sources" turn out to be oh, so wrong many, many times. And we've all heard promises from the band members' lips themselves just fall into the nether reaches, over & over again until the last syllable of recorded time, blah blah blah. The "assurances" from every corner, every year, year after year, mean nothing after this long. I'm an old man, Romy, & I've learned a little something from history, I like to think.

Besides, who needs a new Buckingham solo album when we already have the ever-fresh masterpiece of quirky pop that is "Law & Order"?

If they market him in the independent/alternative field in stead of AOR-section and bring out stuff with things like Gift Of Screws and Shuffle Riff and some other cranky gems they'll be surprised what comes from it. These songs could be flagships in the alternative popscene.

That's an interesting viewpoint, Lux, and the only thing wrong with it, or at least the only difference between your situation and his, is that he didn't simply "mention it in the past" like you. He first mentioned it ten or so years ago and then kept mentioning it, and effectively promising it, over and over. I think somebody somewhere in this thread likened it to dangling this coveted prize in front of us and every time we think we are about to get it, he snatches it away. Well they used the word 'dangling' anyway.

Exactly. That was me with the "dangling carrot" post, and as I think I also mentioned in that post, if Lindsey doesn't really care to or for whatever reason isn't able to release his music, that's fine. I certainly don't believe that any musician "owes" me anything unless I've already paid for it. But to keep fostering these kinds of expectations by announcing once a year or so, "Oh, I'm working on it, I promise, it'll be done soon, it'll be out by the end of the year or next year" - that's just kind of ****ty and mean.

I can't read this otherwise than that you take him for an idiot.

Hmmm.

Well, I love the guy, but he wants to make all his quirky music, offer it up to one of the biggest labels, and have the royal treatment & red carpet rolled out for him. It's unrealistic. If he wants to get his stuff out there so badly, release it independently or sign to a small label. Don't rely on the suits who don't give a flying turkey about you and then roll it into a Mac project when you're finally defeated. But it's his career, he can do what he wants with it.

****ty and mean?

Yes, ****ty and mean. Am I losing any sleep over it or even thinking about it when I close my browser window on this thread? Certainly not. But nor am I going to bend over backwards apologizing for the guy and offering ridiculous excuses about 14-year setbacks.

Lindsey puts out new music when Fleetwood Mac gets together for a Band Meeting and Mick and Lindsey find that they are mutually in real great place.

Mick and Lindsey decide to work on some material together. John adds some bass parts, Stevie puts on her vocals to Lindsey's material. Lindsey does some rearranging of some Stevie Demo's and all of a sudden the next Lindsey Buckingham solo album is complete.

I totally agree with Lux. The guy is in his 50's (approaching 60), he has a wife and three young children to look after, he's making music because he WANTS to and he enjoys it. I have no doubt he spends a hell of a lot more time working on it than other musicians (especially ones who have been in it so long as he has)

His solo project 'he was working on, still is working on' is called Say you will. The bulk of that album is material that WAS going to be his solo album. Say you will was going to be a double album so theres obvioulsy songs that didn't make the single disc, still knocking about. There are more than likely songs that just weren't 'Mac' that he's kept. He's only within the past 6 months come of a world tour that was well over a year in endurance on which he had a portable studio he worked in for the majority of his off time. The guy doesn't have to do this and frankly if your so disrespectfull and unapreciative of him you don't deserve to hear any of his work if it is released.

We've got a DVD and a song on a soundtrack, recently, stop your winging. I have no doubt Lindsey will release this solo album WHEN its ready (which i believe to be 2006).

All this brouhaha over my post, a lot of it misread. I was actually only talking about Lindsey indirectly -- or secondarily. My primary point (really, my only point) was that I have heard, over the course of two or more decades, hundreds, maybe thousands, of claims from various people that "Lindsey's album is almost ready & we will see it soon," & that, because I've heard such claims over & over & seen virtually all of them not pan out, I take all such future claims with ... healthy skepticism, was I believe the phrase I used.

Point: neither here nor there directly about Mr. Buckingham, but about all the "my source tells me it's almost ready" stuff, which circulates endlessly, year after year. And really not such a corrosive, nasty point after all ... just a remark, a "something I've noticed" sort of remark.

Postscript: I couldn't possibly be unhappy or enraged about Buckingham's endlessly postponed 4th solo album because I'm interested only in "Law & Order," & that I already have.

Well of course, there's a good ten or so of them, we all know what they are, and most of us have copies of them. We've had them, along with the songs that ended up on SYW for what, four years? Five? And they were done then.

A year ago people kept asking what I was doing, to which I responded that I was planning on making a certain film. Circumstances got in the way and it never happened. Perhaps I should be grateful it's only private regret and that I don't have a mass of followers waiting with a cross for the disservice of not producing something I mentioned in the past. It's your choice if you want to follow him and that's nice but he doesn't owe anything.

I'm sorry the movie project hasn't gone well, it sounded very interesting. Any chances to try again with it or are you writing a new one?

Perhaps you're right. Perhaps we don't deserve to be his fans. Perhaps none of us should buy it if/when it comes out. We are scum enough to believe his promises and look forward to them panning out. Disgusting individuals, all of us. How dare we express disappointment with him. He is our glorious bright and shining light who we all should bow down and worship. His actions should never be questioned by we ignorant unwashed masses. Those who question him are not true fans. Let me drop to my knees and beg his virtual forgiveness so that I may be worthy of him.

Oh, I was just using that to illustrate my point, I didn't expect interest. Anyway, no plans in the near future. The grant I got expires in about a month so that was wasted and should I want to have a go at some point, I probably won't be forgiven for not using the thing that every broke filmmaker wishes for. Here comes that guilt again.

Many filmakers stopped in the middle of a project, it happens quite often. Give yourself time, another great idea would come, I'm sure.

Way back when I was on the internet for the 1st time in the mid-90s, Lindsey Buckingham's name was listed on the forthcoming albums list on the Reprise Records website. That was before The Dance. You all know what happened. Say You Will did, and I really enjoyed it. Sometime after that, I found some bits and pieces of GOS songs online, in widely varying sound quality. Though I don't believe in announcements of solo albums anymore, I really hope that he finishes his recordings, be it as a solo or as a band project, be it as an album release or as an EP. I mean songs that are as stellar as Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind and Down On Rodeo deserve to be heard by a wider audience than just us enthusiasts.
