This dvd arrived in the mail today. I bought it from the PETA website. Narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, this film documents the various ways in which animals are tortured and killed for food, research, fur, leather, "sport," and because they are simply unwanted.
I cried from start to finish. A lot of the footage that they used had been used in many other similar films and so I had seen them before, but some I hadn't. One image in particular is likely to give me nightmares for weeks. It was of a wolf or some sort of fox on a Chinese fur farm. They showed the animal after it had been skinned, fully conscious, eyes open, sitting upright. I nearly vomited.

Oh, man, I knew it. There's no way I can watch that.

Holy f*ck... what is wrong with people? There is no way I would be able to watch that. I saw a documentary on public access tv recently about poultry processing plants... it was one of the most disgusting and disturbing things I've ever seen.

I have it but haven't watched it yet. I know I'll weep when I finally do. PETA also has a great documentary called "A Cow At My Table" that I recommend. Not sure if it's on DVD because I have it on video, but it's very good.

boy oh boy, I cannot watch those any longer, but they are exactly the reason why I have been vegetarian for over 15 years. I always think that it should be mandated that ANYone who uses animal products be forced to watch docu's like those at least monthly, as well as be forced to visit slaughterhouses and see firsthand what the processing of those animals is really like :( :( :(

It was the most disturbing thing I'd ever seen in my life. The only skin left on the poor thing's body was a tiny bit abound its eyes. And blood was pouring off of what was left of its face.

Actually, after you posted the notice about it last week, I was like - "I have to not eat meat again." And so, I have had but one hamburger since then. :) It was a hangover hamburger, if you know what I mean. I haven't weaned off dairy yet, though.

Bleh. Never quite liked PETA. The idea behind its great, but they go a little over the line (IE Those little "Your Mommy Kills Bunnies" comic books, the paint on Fur Coats, the billboards comparing the slaughtering of pigs to the holocaust).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of PETA. I will occasionally buy some of the products they offer, but I do not donate to them and am not a member. I don't agree with a lot of the tactics they use or even some of the things they've tried to change. I think that they and the ALF give the entire movement a bad name, but this particular film was very powerful.
