Cool pic from one of the best rock bassists out there.

Edit: I just wonder on which songs from SYW John Pierce played bass (his name's in the credits)... Can someone please help me? So I can hear the difference between a legend and a session player ;)

Especially if someone can post a bunch from when he was younger. :]

That last pic is very cute, btw.

He's my favourite male component of FM: funny, self-ironic, silent, amazing as a bass player, and he can also cook, what else can a girl ask? :D

Happy Birthday Mr. McVie! Hope to hear some of your music soon.

Dear John - Happy Birthday - your basslines alone have been the deciding factor in me liking many a song. Without them, innumerable songs would not have been nearly as cool as they turned out to be. Including, of course, most of the big hits. :xoxo: Oh, and thanks for the remind, trackie, me mum's b'day is the next day.

Wow... it was on Johns birthday that a bunch of us saw FM on the SYW tour at Birmingham. We showered him with stuffed penguins during the band intros!!

Okay, but just for starters - can anyone in their right mind really imagine Rhiannon being as cool as it is without that kick ass bassline? And that's just one example. I could probably think of a bunch more. I didn't like RTTG until I heard that kick ass bass.
And It's totally instrumental in SOTM. Totally!

The list goes on and on. The biggest one, honestly, is GYOW. That **** would not be half the song it is without the drumandbass awesomeness. And even such "throwaway" songs as IDWTK - and Dreams, too!

For Reals, this guy is THE MAN.

I'm just saying.

Jay McVie is the one who made bunches of our faves kick ass. :blob2:

So lets not just pay lip service - I say - this is a man who made the songs what they are as much as the writers or vocalists or producers. I think part of FM's standout is "whatever" it is that the bassline contributes.
 Sesly. With a less accomplished bass player, this band would have been so much more mediocre. And I really believe that with all my brain. I thank god every song for John, and I wish he was on Stevie's solo records, I think he is that important.
JMO.:wavey:
*yes, I've been outed as a bass geek*

I actually love him. :laugh::nod:

Macs spine is the bassline. happy 60th, John. Your wit is to die for and your creative additions to all macsongs are priceless. The way you drive Over and Over is my latest fix. So simple yet so defining. Greatness. Just convince Lindsey to hire a studio for six weeks and pull off an album straight from the guts with a live-feel. So you will not be confronted with the same segment again and again and again and again in the studio and you'll all get the full picture of the songs in an instant.

First of all, a warm birthday greeting to a guy I have admired and loved to pieces for far too many years now. Happy Birthday, John. (I still won't say the number. ;) )

Secondly, I sent him the direct link to this 'birthday' thread, so he could see all of your well wishes. He'd like to comment on it and if my daughter ever lets me use the real computer in the house (I hate this &%$@ laptop and the email program it uses), I will write him back and tell him how he can do that. :woohoo: We may also get a bit of an idea of what might be in the future for FM...

Just wanted to give ya'll the scoop. :)

Good ol' John McVie.

He keeps the spirit of Charles Mingus alive in the world of the 4-minute pop song.

John is truly, for a number of sensible reasons, one of the six or eight genuine heroes in the phony pop world -- but you can't tell him so, for it's the hero-worship itself that sickens John. So if you love McVie, you're forever locked in a sort of postmodern decentered regression into a pat-on-the-back dialectic.

John is the Humphrey Bogart of rock music.

He said there was a 'band meeting' just last week (!), and that something will probably happen next year. Stevie has her Aussie thing coming up, and LB may have something going on in the summer. So maybe after that??

Just wanted to say "Thank You" for the kind words on my 35th Birthday.
There's mumblings about a tour later next year so maybe I can say thanks in person.
Anyway, Many thanks and love to "All"
John

This is surreal! I'm amazed and impressed that John's down-to-earth enough to respond directly to his fan base. I wonder if any other Mac member would deign to do this.

I've never communicated with the guy, but I know Bob Welch is very good about talking directly with fans through his website.

-LisHmm. time to some up with money.. (((SIGH)))) but well worth it. But seriously, doesnt something like this give more legitimacy to the Ledge to have an actual band member come in here and post? I'm so glad you did this Lis, you made my day!!

Well shoot, I think Marty and Lis' whole site has been pretty legit for quite some time now what with all of the folks who've stopped by to do Q&As over the years. Many thanks to both them for always pulling this stuff off!

I have always been really proud of the Q&A's, although back when Marty first told me we'd be doing the early ones i was like 'Yeah, uh huh, whatever, I'm tired, help me with baby.' LOL. But I often look back on them now and shake my head because they are so cool. I think all the Q&A guests contacted us first, so thanks to all of those good folks!

Thanks, David. :) I think I've said a few times how John wrote us out of the blue 10 yrs ago when this site first started out to tell us he liked it, so there again shows watta good guy he is, from way back then to now. The cool thing is, I think he was as genuinely surprised by everyone's kind words as we were that he acknowledged them here. so it turned out to be a nice little reciprocal lovefest.

*cough*he's always been my favorite*cough*
