It's dull, light mallpop. Something one would likely hear while browsing the travel section at Waldenbooks. Half of the album is great fun, while the other half just gives off the impression that she shouldn't have bothered. It's inoffensive enough, but a whole album of it is just too damned much.

The production is incredibly bland; the middle tracks are especially filler. I don't listen to it very often. But she sounds great.

I really don't like it except for a few songs. I enjoy all of her FM songs and her 1984 solo album but In The Meantime is just too dull and bland for me.

I think this is a question of expectations.

I expected typical Christine pop/rock for grown ups and that's what I got. The bonus was the voice which to me sounds better than ever.

I have to admit I had to listen to it a couple of times before I really started to like it. For Christine I was prepared to make the effort.

On the other hand I have only listened to Stevie's Trouble in Shangri La once because there wasn't enough in it to make me put it on again. For Stevie I wasn't prepared to make the effort.

As for Mick and John I didn't even buy the albums!

I still play ITM although not as much as I used to. I think it's a very honest piece of work and I like it more than her 1984 solo album.

What you said.  Cept Stevie lost me earlier, on OSOTM. I LITERALLY(once even a huge fan) played it one time.

Still, imagine ITM's best 5 or 6 songs on SYW!:woohoo: THAT would've been an album I could've really gotten into!

I can't figure it out, but I expected much more for this record...

Yeah. I have to admit, I don't think she really flies as a solo artist. I love her and her voice to bits, but as a reviewer put it, she works best as a 'side dish' than a main course. Or something to that effect. LOL. It's not that her solo work is BAD... I adore her Christine Perfect stuff, actually, and both the '84 album and ITM have good songs on it, but I don't think those last two are full, solid records. The jazz stuff, however? Rocks. I'm not even a big fan of that kind of music.

The best songs on ITM are Calumny and Friend. Those are my two favourites, along with Anything is Possible. Reminds me of something from the Mac days. Bad Journey is just... a bad song. The rest is kind of "eh". I wrote up an entire review during the summer. It's sitting in a notebook in my drawer.

Christine is mellow, MOR, AC. All three of her solo albums are like this. Yes, even the Perfect album has its boring songs and that's an album where she didn't practically write everything as in her later solo albums.

ITM is nice and mellow. Period. It never intended to break new ground and is nothing short of a cute little pet project with her nephew.

I agree with you. I think that's just an awful song; I don't know what people see in it. But I think there are some other great tracks on there besides the ones you mentioned. I think "Forgiveness" is one of the best, but that one seems to get mixed reviews.

I love "Sweet Revenge" too, but I find myself wondering what "wicked ways" she intends to use to get her sweet revenge, exactly. So ominous and ambiguous. It's like Meatloaf. Just what is it that you won't do for love, man? You're so adamantly against it so what the hell is it???

Oh, yeah, I like Sweet Revenge. I was just singing that one last night.
Everyone seems to love You Are, and it got some radio play in the UK, but it's not really a favourite of mine. The random high notes kind of... eh. Don't really grab me. Forgiveness is okay. I also like So Sincere... more the lyrics than the song itself. It's a little cryptic. Reminds me of something you know who would've written, with the "Funny little white car with the broken light".

I think Northern Star could've been a great song, if it had been arranged properly.

If you go back a bit in my LJ, you'll find the post where I talked a bit about each of the songs. :wavey: It's not a proper review, but it's basically my first impressions of them, since I posted it the day I bought it.

It's not mediocre at all for me. I like most of the songs, even if a couple seem composed on the autopilot. I agree, the production damaged the album. To sound homemade could work for grunge (if it still exists) but not for a sophisticated lady like her, IMO.

Calumny is my favourite, actually! I don't know if it's just me, but I tend to visualize voices... In terms of textures, and shapes, and stuff. I know, I'm insane. But there's a part where her voice sounds round, when she sings the word "soft" in the "oh, so soft and sweet" bit. It's just something in her voice that really gets to me. Same with Songbird, when she goes, "I wish it from myself". Chills.

I'm fond of "Northern Star," though I do think it would've benefitted from better/different production. My beef with "You Are" is how cheesy it is, but I find it very listenable regardless. Some of the lyrics in "So Sincere" really bother me. Not a bad song, though. Anyway...

it is a bit cheesy... Therefore, radio friendly. I kid.

I think there are only a few songs that sound very polished. Calumny, Northern Star, and Friend spring to mind.

In terms of lyrics, I think some of them border on being overly cheesy... But then again, I have to say, most of her songs do. I don't think she'd object to that statement either, as she's said she's a "pretty basic songwriter". And she is. She's never been very prolific, with the exception of songs like Songbird, and Show Me a Smile. I think, though her songs are very simple (a style that I believe comes from her background in jazz), it's her delivery that really makes them what they are. Some songs just have to be sung by the right person.

That was what I noticed first: No piano! Calumny was the only song with piano, right? I think that is what people expect from her, since the piano is what she is associated with. Hey, that's what I was expecting from her, too. I don't think this is a terrible album, but nothing to get totally excited about... I guess it all comes down to personal taste.

Hmm... Yeah, that could've been it. Christine doesn't really seem like the type of person to venture out of the little style she's carved out for herself, but you never know. She does have a fun, spunky side that she shows more on the Legendary Christine Perfect and some of the songs from the self-titled album. Maybe that's what she was going for here? If that's the case, I think she might've done better by balancing it out a bit more with some lovely piano ballads like Calumny, since, like I said, that's what people recognize as her prime talent.

Definitely. I intended homemade more as repetitive and uninspired, done by a not very skilled producer. Acoustic friend, for example was much more poignant, IMO.

I love her songwriting and simple style, but with some great songs (I return to Friend that's one of my all time favourite of hers or Calumny, Sweet Revenge, Bad Journey, You Are) there were some fillers.

Bad Journey? It doesn't sit well with me. Sounds like she's trying too hard to return to her roots, with that faux-jazz. I wasn't going to comment on this thread since it was started by a person who doesn't care for Christine McVie anyway. But a few of the die-hard Christine fans have posted, so I will too. I like all three of her solo albums, but In The Meantime is my favorite. I LOVE it! There is a comfort, an intimacy to it that I love. The production is a bit simplistic. So what? There is such a thing as being over-produced, too. That can turn me off. She is a simple, basic love song writer...no pretense or crap. That's what she did here. That's what I was expecting. What I didn't expect was how fantastic her voice still is. It's better now than it was 20-30 years ago, which is ridiculous. Nobody's voice gets better as they age. Her voice is the focal point of the album, in my opinion.

By the way, Christine is not a solo artist. She would be the first to say this. She made her first album because her then manager pushed her into it. She made her 1984 album & ITM purely for fun. It's that simple.

Everything else aside, I totally agree: her voice is beautiful. I've likened it to a fine wine... Much like Chris herself. She sounds great.

There is such a thing as over-produced, but there's also the flipside: being underproduced. Not that ITM was, I just think it could use a bit of tweaking here and there. In the little review I wrote down, I summed it up as an album to listen to on a rainy day, since it is a *cozy* sort of album.

She made her first album because her then manager pushed her into it. She made her 1984 album & ITM purely for fun. It's that simple.
Well... Don't assume that everyone knew those facts about how the albums came to be. I didn't even know that was the reasons why she did the Christine Perfect and the '84 records. ITM, I knew was something she said was "totally unexpected".

FWIW I don't even recognize the person who started this topic, so I had no idea whether or not they were a McVie fan.

That's too bad. "The Visitor," "I'm Not Me," and "Gotta Band" were actually quite good. They're definately among my favorite solo projects.

Admittedly, "Shakin' The Cage" hasn't aged so well, and I really haven't listened to "Something Big" much. For that matter, I really haven't listened to too much of the newer stuff (TISL, SYW, ITM, "Something Big") as much as the older stuff. I'm getting lazy.

Her 1984 album is a tad better, but still :( it just showed me that too much of Christine is not a good thing, things get repetitve way to quickly.

And yes, i am a huge Christine fan, almost as much as i am a stevie fan. but where stevie is a exciting performer and artist, christine is not. I agree that In the Meantime is a little too... shall we say easy listening, but as Diss said, it's not offensive at all.

On the other hand...

TISL almost brilliant? I don't know about that. In fact I find that album to be absolutely horrid as I've made no secret of in the past. It really was the last nail in the coffin of my Nicks fandom.

I've also made no secret of the fact that I am a Buckingham fan. But guess what? I HATED Shut Us Down, and if LB were to make an album of songs that sounded even remotely like that one I would be a very unhappy Buckinghamaniac indeed.

What it comes down to is that none of the members of Fleetwood Mac are gods. All of them are quite capable of putting out music that some of even their most dedicated fans would call "mediocre" or just plain "bad," but so what? That doesn't mean that Christine, Stevie, Lindsey or anyone are bad artists nor does it mean that anyone on this board doesn't like a particular member just because they criticise a particular piece of work.

Well, if y'all's goal is to push everyone else besides the fanatics away, you're doing a mighty fine job of it. I guess I should've figured out months ago that there's no point in trying to find a place or a way to fit in in this forum unless I love Christine and forsake all others, pretending she's some goddess. I'm not interested in watching grown people be reduced to whiny children who can't believe they're sharing their playground with the kids across the street at the mere sight of a "chiffonhead," or whatever the case may be. We can't be the least bit critical of ITM. Did it occur to no one that dontlookdown might be a Christine fan who simply doesn't like ITM?

I'm already at the end of my rope on other matters so I've about had it.

And at the end there? You brought Stevie into it. Just randomly. This wasn't even about her at all.
Chill out. ALL I meant was that I DON'T come to Chris' forum to argue, and am not interested in doing such.

In the end there, it appears(to me, anyway), that the people who are coming here to argue are, in general, from a different neighborhood, looking for a little trouble.

I have to say that when FM is in concert I LOVED it when she would play the accordian during Tusk...and playing maracas during Everywhere. She's so graceful and sprirted. I just ate it up. So neat to see her step away from behind the keyboards and groove.

Can I just say that we need to make the distinction between something that is not to our taste and "bad" or "boring"

If you don't like certain types of music or you find it boring - fine that's OK

But it does not make it bad or boring

It means you don't like it or you find it boring.

I don't find ITM boring.

I find 9 Lindsey songs and 9 Stevie songs tedious. I'll repeat that I find it tedious

It doesn't make it "bad" or "boring" though

It's just my opinion.

Lets be honest here - ITMT is exceptionally boring - and has no stand out tracks apart from "You Are" - the album is average at best.

Her 1984 album is a tad better, but still :( it just showed me that too much of Christine is not a good thing, things get repetitve way to quickly. But the problem with the '84 CD is that there isn't too much Christine; there isn't enough Christine, actually. There's too much Todd Sharp et al., too much meandering mostly rather bland soloing from fellow musicians. The songs don't snap to.
And yes, i am a huge Christine fan, almost as much as i am a stevie fan. but where stevie is a exciting performer and artist, christine is not. Back in the day she was brilliant, but now in the 2000's, stevie can still bring out an almost brilliant album (TISL), but christine failed miserably with ITMT :sorry:I look at it as just a case of not attempting to whip things up into a tremulous frenzy, so therefore not a failure. If you pour yourself a cup of coffee & expect it to bowl you over like an expertly made martini, you're going to be disappointed.
Im sorry if i offended any hardcore CM fans, but i thought a new members view on this might be insightfull :nod:Always insightful to hear from people who dislike what I like, & vice versa.

Homer, it shouldn't torment you as much as it does. You should be eager to hear dissenting views, honestly spoken & clearly worded. How can you possibly be annoyed by the very nature of dissenting opinion & still hang out on the Internet?

David
11-22-2005, 04:29 PM
Mission accomplished!  I figured we were on the same page, btw...But Homer, I'd like to hear more about your responses & impressions of Christine's work, rather than superficial statements such as "so-and-so is great" etc.

Don't worry so much about people allegedly infiltrating this forum from other forums or other mind-boggling conspiracy theories. Let us hear your substantive impressions of Christine's craft or art -- whatever aspects you feel you want to discuss. I can't remember your doing that here (although you'd do so on Usenet). If someone held a gun to my head & told me to tell him why Homer/David likes McVie material or what aspects of it he likes, I couldn't do so. I'd wind up shot. Discuss Christine, Dave. Pick a song & try to describe the aspects that move you & groove you.:blob2: :blob1:

The Christine forum is a success only to the extent that WE DISCUSS CHRISTINE & generate interesting discussions & share considered opinions. Christine herself isn't here to make her forum a success. WE have to do it. Do you guys understand that concept? or is that beyond you?

David

That stance in this forum is Christine's own worst enemy -- & so unlike the understated spirit & waggish elan that drive Christine herself -- but the promulgators refuse (or are unable) to see that. That attitude will turn this place into a ghost town, which is utterly antithetical to a message board.

Christine is all about DISCUSSION. Please continue to discuss Christine's work & life, Hillary. You have said so many interesting things in the past & I really hope you continue to do so.

David
11-22-2005, 04:41 PM
Chill out. ALL I meant was that I DON'T come to Chris' forum to argue, and am not interested in doing such.Well that's pretty bizarre, Dave, because an Internet message board is specifically designed for argument -- argument, debate, discussion. What are you supposed to do with a message board with no argument/debate/discussion? Wear it on your head?

Just what DO you come to Christine's forum for? What is it exactly that you want -- or hope -- to read ...if not opinions & discussion?

Good point. IMO, none of FM's members are very good as solo acts, except for Stevie. Why? Because she is, as you said, an exciting performer. Now before everyone jumps on my back and yells at me for hinting that Christine and Lindsey may not be exciting, let me continue.

When Stevie joined the band, although many critics tended to praise Christine as the "saving grace" of FM, saying she had a "golden throat" (*cough*) dismissing Stevie's voice as... well, less than pleasant to listen to, but focusing on her enchanting stage presence. Which she had then, and continues to have today. What's the first thing that comes to most people's mind when they hear the name Fleetwood Mac? Stevie! What's the first thing that they think of when they think of Stevie? Most likely her whirling and twirling shawls. Presence.

Christine? Doesn't do much on stage. She's behind her piano (with a green cup:lol: ), and I think she's more comfortable there. I read somewhere she said something to the effect that for her to go out and do what Stevie does would be difficult for her. She'd feel uncomfortable, and she was sure Stevie probably wouldn't want to be stuck behind a piano all night. So, therefore, I think if anything, the only presence she has is that she's doin' the piano thing. I think a lot of it has to do with personality, too. Christine says she's very shy, and more of a musician than a performer. I see Stevie as the exact opposite.

Lindsey, same thing. He's never spun around in a gossamer shawl (though I would love to see him try), or tried to build up any sort of image. Although he obviously stands out more than shy John, I don't think there's much about him-- aside from his skills--that would distinguish him from everyone else.

I like some of Lindsey's solo work, and some of Christine's, but I think, because they haven't built up this persona, they get shoved to the back. Looking at the success either of them had, in terms of how many records were sold and whatnot, how many people were interested in them as solo artists alone? How about Stevie's success?

I think they all just happen to work extremely well as a group. They may not get on all the time, but when they're working, something happens: good music. IMO that's the chain (I know, I'm getting a bit cheesy here. No, I haven't been drinking) that keeps them together.

Good point. IMO, none of FM's members are very good as solo acts, except for Stevie. Why? Because she is, as you said, an exciting performer. In terms of critical reception, Buckingham was actually the one in Fleetwood Mac who generally got the accolades as a live performer. He was incendiary on many an occasion, as flummoxed critics often noted in their reviews:

"Buckingham engaged in playful jams with bassist John McVie and generally moved about with the joy of a kid who had just been handed the keys to a toy store. ... Buckingham is the rocker, helping move the band from its old soft-rock focus to a more involving hard-rock approach. He, too, has blossomed as a performer, adopting a near primal scream urgency on key vocals." (L.A. Times 9-01-80)

"Buckingham displayed his newly found control of the group by dominating the performance both musically and energetically. Accompanied by his veteran band of Christine McVie on keyboards, John McVie on bass, Mick Fleetwood on drums, and Stevie Nicks on vocals and percussion, Buckingham made great progress toward returning the group to its status as one of the world's premier bands. ... It was, ultimately, Buckingham's show." (St. Petersburg Times 8-07-80)

"The noticeable switch is in the growing importance Buckingham plays in the front line. He has outmatched the witch-like stance of Nicks, and indeed, the Big Mac Attack now reads like the Stevie and Lindsey Show." (Honolulu Bulletin 3-28-80)

"Lindsey Buckingham moved through the entire concert with a vibrancy that moved into the crowd like cannon fire." (Birmingham News 8-13-80)

"Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham has emerged as the most frequent lead singer as well as the main musical force on stage." (Omaha World Herald 8-22-80)

"It was Buckingham's show at the beginning of the tour, and, if anything, he was more commanding at the end. Dressed in a ten-gallon hat, boots and a white V-neck T-shirt of Beverly Hills cowboy, he was simply spectacular onstage. He dominated the band as completely as any human being could ever dominate drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie -- one of the most cohesive and potent rhythm sections in rock." (Rolling Stone 10-30-80)

"It was down to Lindsey Buckingham to move the band into anything approaching strenuous action. ... He's funny, a treat to watch, and he makes the band earn its supper keeping up with him." (New Music Express 12-01-79)

"The quintet apparently has given the reins on stage to Lindsey Buckingham, the singer and guitarist whose music mixes forceful -- and urgent -- emotional touches with a playful eccentricity that is underscored by his quick marches around the stage that are reminiscent of a windup toy." (Los Angeles Times 10-20-82)

And did you read any of the reviews of his 1993 solo tour? Here's a typical example:

"Comeback or debut, Buckingham's concert was confident, energized, accomplished, wide-ranging and surprising. Heck, as long as we're slinging modifiers, why not go all the way? As comebacks and/or debuts go, this one was triumphant." (Los Angeles Times 12-12-92)

Point being that Buckingham was known & admired for being a winning & exciting performer, albeit by a much smaller number of people.

Did you see the part where I said "IMO"? :wavey:

I'm not saying you're wrong, but when it comes to record sales... the audience size depends on whether or not the artist will succeed. And sadly, that's how success seems to be gauged in the music industry. Especially when it comes to artists who have gone solo after being part of a group.

I like Lindsey, and I enjoyed Soundstage and love listening to the GoS demos, but I prefer him with FM.

The production is a bit simplistic. So what?

I thought it was OVER-produced  She would have done better with a rawer, more intimate sound imo. I mean, the songs themselves aren't bad (except for Bad Journey--which everyone has pointed out) it's the cheesy production and arrangements that left me cold. Ugh. She could have done a lot more with this, but whatever. If it was a "little pet project" like someone mentioned earlier then I guess she did alright for herself.

And to be honest, I don't really get this, "Christine's voice sounds better than 20 years ago" sentiment either. She sounds good, don't get me wrong, but I MUCH prefer Christine's beautifully smooth alto on "Warm Ways" "Oh Daddy" and "Brown Eyes" from yesteryear. But again, maybe it was the songs on ITM...the songs left me cold so the voice could only salvage so much, ya know?

Well, the electric guitars playing in sort of a funk style are definitely a departure for Christine. I had hoped for some tasty licks, like Michael Thompson plays them on her songs from the Time album, but instead there's this monotonous funk groove on large stretches of the In the Meantime album. Unfortunately, Christine's keyboards step back to showcase the funk grooves, so there's not as much diversity in the arrangements as I had hoped for. When I heard it for the 1st time, I was really unsure if this was an album for me to own. But I had a listen again in a different shop on a different day, and some songs grew, so I got the CD.
There's just one song, which I think really works well with the funk groove and that is Bad Journey. Friend is OK with it, but would sound better in a different arrangement, though it's probably the best song on there.
Others that I like from in the Meantime are Liar, Givin' It Back, Sweet Revenge,
Northern Star and Forgiveness (in which she really shines).
Let's hope she'll be doing another album at some time, but with a different producer and guitar player.
