Okay, so they just played this song on the radio. I always blast this song from the speakers. I cannot listen to this song without dancing. I mean jumping up and down playing air guitar, imagining I'm at a concert. Picturing Lindsey singing this song to Stevie with such anger (for lack of a better word) back in the 70's. I think this song is one of, if not, the best Fleetwood Mac song ever. Just because everything it represents and it's just such a rocken song. It's the song that the radio stations always play, because "it" is Fleetwood Mac.

I know this has probably been discussed to death, but too bad

Great song and I even love it live. I even liked Lindsey's Soundstage version. Lindsey could do a few more rocking songs IMHO.

However, I am becoming bored with the live versions of late. Lindsey's soundstage version was pretty blah to me. :(

I would totally agree. Everything about the song is super. The vocals, the lyrics, the arrangement, the guitar solo...even Mick's ripped off drum parts. I think the Rumours version and the version on The Dance are the two best ones.

This is like the greatest Fleetwood Mac song ever. And I don't think theres anyway it could sound bad, unless lindsey "Big Loves" it.

I love the soundstage version only because of the drums at the very end of the song.

"Tell me why, EVERYTHING TURNED AROUND...packing up, shacking up's all you wanna do...if I could, BABY I'D *GIVE* *YOU* *MY* *WORRRRLDDD*, open up, everything's waiting for YOU!"

I also enjoy Stevie's part in the last verse. It's my absolute favorite live performance of this song...just wish the last guitar solo was longer.

for some reason, Go Your Own Way has managed to hold it's own over the years - despite ridiculous over playness on the radio. I can't say the same for Don't Stop. But yes, it's a great song. Even people who don't like the band seem to like Go Your Own Way. For me I guess I stopped really listening a long time ago because I know it so well. It's not as interesting as Dreams but it certainly is right up there with the best rock songs ever.

As for GYOW - I never get tired of it. I always blast it when I hear it on the radio, and it always makes me feel good. I have grown tired of many an overplayed FM and/or SN song, but for some reason, this song endures. A true classic.

I prefer the original studio version to ANY officially released live version...they seem to file down the edges in post-production. There are a few boots that kick butt...all edgy & ****. Even some bootleg live versions post-Lindsey, with Billy on vocals and Rick just soaring on the end solo are great.

But, even still, nothing does it for me like the original studio version. I still remember the first time I heard it, in October 1976...being behind the wheel of my parents' 1973 Toyota Corolla station wagon driving home from school, cruisin' north on the 405 fwy between Westminster Ave & the 22 fwy merge (going the 55 mph speed limit), when it came on the radio...after a big build-up by the DJ that they were about to debut the new Fleetwood Mac single...by Lindsey's ending solo, I had that little 4-cyl engine whining, and had that station wagon going 85 mph before I knew it.

Just as a side note: My parents finally got rid of that station wagon last summer (when they bought a Toyota Prius)...the odometer never got to 100,000 miles. I think it only had 96,000+ miles on it when they sold it.

Agreed. I'm actually surprised at all the love for the Dance version; I've always been kind of bored by that recording. The studio version is just perfection, though, with Mick's drums all off-kilter, and all those different guitar tracks rising up out of the ether to create that perfect solo.

Nothing beats the original. A lot of the live versions of GYOW don't blow me away. Especially the more recent ones. When Lindsey gets to the chorus and has to sing the harmony part, it's a bit of a bummer. Ya know...shows the bands age I guess. The Rosebud version is probably my favorite live version. It's nice to hear what I guess was a bit of a work in progress with the different guitar solo. I'm a sucker for the harmonic guitar solo so it gets me every time.

And may I join the other Canadian Ledgies on a quest to find the Soundstage DVD. Actually my plan was to call HMV and have them special order it for me. They're pretty good for that. I probably won't until after Christmas though. I'm hoping for a great big HMV gift certificate for Christmas. :D

oh sweet jesus truer words have never been spoken. I just LOVE the dance version. The studio version to is great however just not got that extra boost. I just love how they end it with that riff after the solo and I lvoe how the first solo just kicks in The studio version just dones't have that. Complete perfection, both versins. AMAZING

Even though there are other FM songs (especially from the Rumors era) that I like just as well, I believe GYOW is one of their best songs and not just because it was (and still is) so successful. My reasons why:
1) I can't for the life of me remember when I first heard it. It seems like I have always known that song. And it makes me feel good every time I hear it.

2) It is one of the songs that every single time I hear them make me think: "one must be a very inspired musician to write such a simple yet perfect song". GYOW is one of the few examples that show that great songs don't need to have complicated lyrics or over-sophisticated sound or whatever. It is pure simplicity. To be it differently: IMO it is a song that had to be written

3) I just love the way it starts "loving you..." and Stevie's "packing up-shacking up" singing along at the live versions !!!

That's all from me!

If the Rosebud version is the one I'm correctly thinking about - I would say that would be my favorite live version of the song. Not that its better than anything else - I just really love it. You can see that the sting of the song is fresh to Stevie, and when she sings the back up vocal, the camera is right on her, and she looks dazed, like she's holding down some tears and venom..even her eyes look a bit - teary - not that she is - it just looks really cool. Yes - total cuteness - the kind I wish I had!

I also love how she has her hand on her hip at the beginning - like - "Ok you a-hole, lets start this thing and get it over with"...(Again - I'm hoping this is the same concert). The drama was really going on between them at that time...so there are sparks.

But my all time favorite version is the album. The song is just simply orgasmic as it hits the crecendo and just fades out. Great song. I can't remember when I first heard it. It's does sound like it's always been around...I guess Lindsey had a good muse the day he wrote it...and was able to snatch it from the air.

Greil Marcus writing about Go Your Own Way...

“Go Your Own Way” was rough, harsh, hard to follow. From its opening notes it was a maelstrom, excitement, and nothing else. It was an assault, a hammering, the singer moaning and threatening, pleading and damning; it didn’t let up for a second.

Coming two thirds of the way through the performance, the requisite instrumental break should have provided a rest; instead it raised the stakes. When Lindsey Buckingham dropped his words for a guitar solo – a shattered, severed solo almost drowning in a dozen more overdubbed guitar parts, the off-beat rhythm chasing his lead, then overtaking him, then seeming to wait for him to catch up, which he never quite did – the song began all over again. Ten years later, I flinch every time it comes on the radio, knowing what’s coming, knowing that no matter how completely I can predict what’s going to happen, I won’t be able to catch up: the instrumental passage supersedes not only the singing that precedes it, but the ability of memory to enclose it.

Greil Marcus is very often an overblown pompous ass, but damn, he's right on the money here. That's a perfect description of the genius of the music of "Go Your Own Way." That solo, and that frenzied interplay between Lindsey's guitar and Mick's drums that threaten to throw the song completely over the edge at any moment is what I love most about GYOW.

Ah, "Go Your Own Way." This is a song I've had a love-hate-like-love relationship with over the years.

There was a while I couldn't stand this song because it was Lindsey telling Stevie off, but I decided to suck it up and sing it at karaoke one night because one of my friends loves that song. Now it's one of those songs I do occasionally.

I don't do it all the time because I don't want the song to be one of those that I go through the motions on. When I sing it, I want to be in character, meaning *angry*. I also want to be up there doing crazy guitar, running around the stage, etc. I can only do that every once in a while. But when I do sing "Go Your Own Way," it usually brings the house down.

I love how you wouldn't even listen to it because its Anti-Stevie. Thats amazing.Pretty amazing. Not only that, but to see only anger in it is to miss a lot of its appeal. There's also a great deal of love in the song, as well as humor.

Did you guys ever notice how "You Make Loving Fun" finds a minor groove for the verses & slips into the major for the chorus, whereas "Go Your Own Way" follows the opposite pattern.

Those are the only two songs on Rumours built virtually equally of both major & minor; I've never thought about the effect before, but it must influence the way we individually interpret these songs.

I hadn't noticed that at all, but of course, it seems so obvious now! You're right, David, I think those shifts have a lot to do with the feelings we associate with those songs. It's a great effect.

My thoughts exactly. Especially great deal of love. Who would sit down and write a song like that if they were not in love?

(This thought kind of reminds me of a totally, entirely different song, "Chelsea Hotel", written by Leonard Cohen for Janice Joplin. He goes on talking about her during the entire song and then at the end he says "I don't mean to suggest that I love you the best/I can't keep track of each fallen robin/that's all, I don't think of you that often"). Pretty obvious IMO.

And, let's not for get a hint of desperation.

That's why I've never understood why the Green era fans dismiss this album as pop fluff. I mean, maybe the only thing that ties THIS album with something like "Then Play On" is perhaps the strongest quality of most of the Peter Green songs: Both are brutally honest and full of raw emotion. I get the exact same chill from Stevie and Lindsey's harmonies on "I Don't Want To Know" that I get from Peter's guitar playing on "Before The Beginning." My hunch is that the honesty and emotion in the music is why Peter Green and the "Rumours" band continue to be the biggest draws of Fleetwood Mac. (Or, to put it cynically, they like to walk around in their personal demons, and we're all voyeurs.)

This is my all time favorite song. I never tire of it ever. Now see I know everyone thinks of this as a kiss off song but sometimes I wonder. He sounds so hurt and sad sometimes during this song. Set to a different melody and speed, the angry tone of this song may not have been there.

Loving you, isn't the right thing to do

This could be taken 2 ways. Also could it be because you don't want me?

How can I ever change things that I feel

wondering how he could stop loving her.

If I could baby I'd give you my world
How can I when you won't take it from me

he's basically saying he still loves her here but she dont want him no mo.

I know the packing up shackin up line is kind of angry. but then we have....

Open up everything's waiting for you

I take the "everything" to mean him/his love. Also the guitar solo has a certain sadness to it. A friend of mine says that the guitar sounds like it's crying. I truly adore this amazing piece of music.

Jeez i got to much time on my hands.

Is this the performance you mean? It's the first time I've seen it (thanks to youtube and priestofnothing). It totally rocks! The close-ups of Stevie are total cuteness! and I love her singing those parts!

Wow - just saw this for the first time, and YES it totally rocks!!!

Sadly - I think it kind of became the Stevie show at the end of Lindsey's solo. I know she's going to be gracious and collect those stuffed toys...but I don't know...I'd be bowing to LB and that incredible guitar instead of taking a bow as if I was taking all the credit - with toys in hand. I wonder if she forgot this wasn't a Nicks concert, but a Fleetwood Mac one?

Oh well - I guess that is rock and roll.

What a beautiful assessment of this song. I've always loved it for the "love" factor. I've always thought that "How can I ever change things that I feel" was equivelent to Stevie's "So I'll begin not to love you.." meaning that they both had to deal with shaking off this love and moving on.

In the "Open up - everything's waiting for you part"...it seems like he trying to tell her he loves her and will give her his world - but she's too closed up to see it. Which matches Stevie's "I said I loved you years ago" but has to convince herself "tell myself, you never loved me....no." It seems they are just not on the same page with this relationship. He wants to give her his love, but she "won't take it from me"...but she thinks he doesn't really love her.

Man - this should be a soap opera on VH1.

Apologies if this has been discussed and answered before.
Can anybody tell me why Go Your Own Way wasn't included on the original Forrest Gump soundtrack? It was only included on the reissue 7 years after its original release.
Any ideas?

I have no idea but usually its about the artist not wanting to be included or is not paid enough. Maybe Lindsey didn't want the song on the soundtrack in case the movie was a flop or something. This has happened on other albums. The Flashdance soundtrack was one of the biggest selling albums of 1983. Joan Jett's "I love rock n roll" is in the movie but not included on the album. I heard that Joan did not want it on the album. The Go Gos did not want "We got the beat" (one of their biggest hits) on the Fast Times soundtrack. They gave them another song instead. We Got The Beat is the opening song to the movie.
How about this. No one thought Woodstock would be profitable. Mountain's manager persuaded the band to not be included in the soundtrack or any video performances. They lost a ton of money and publicity for that decision  The album went to #1 and made many bands famous and rich.

I guessed that could be the reason. I watched Forrest Gump again last night for the first time in many years. Obviously all the music used in the film is brilliant and has its place but when it got to the 'run' Go Your Own Way really sent shivers down my back. I remember being perplexed when the soundtrack was released that GYOW was omitted. Then, having looked it up on wikipedia it seems GYOW was later added when the album was reissued. That really sounds like typical Fleetwood Mac.
Surely though, if he/they didnt want it used on the soundtrack he/they wouldnt have sanctioned its use for the film in the first place???

I know there have been a number of Go Your Own Way breakdown/analysis clips. This is one by a Youtuber that I particularly like watching; Rick Beato. Unfortunately Fleetwood Mac blocked it from his Youtube channel so it was moved to a website;

It's very interesting to understand all the different layers to the song.

Nice, deep breakdown, and it always helps to have top-notch technology at the ready when producing these videos, including the software to separate and highlight individual tracks.

One thing that has puzzled me for decades about McVie is that his lines are always described as "busy" or "flowery" or something like. But then I listen to other bass lines of the period, especially funk and disco, and I think McVie keeps it a lot simpler than they are. I don't know who is playing bass on the 1977 Andrew Gold album, but it sounds as "filled in" as anything McVie does on Rumours.

I know what you mean. But I think it's McVie's unexpected yet logical placing of the notes he plays that makes his work feel more bubbly and propulsive than others. I think of his redacted bass lines for "Second Hand News" that propel the song forward as an energetic, stately march. Lindsey ended up rerecording a more straightforward bass line that takes attention away from the bottom end that was so prominent on The White Album. Never understood why LB often tried to get Mick and (especially) John to play less idiosyncratically. In an effort to keep the pop profile, he often simplified the bottom end instrumentation.

Yeah Youtube changed something in their policy about a month ago, and now you get these random blockings. This persons block says there are 22 seconds in his video claimed by WMG - if he edits out those 22 seconds he would get his 18 plus minute video reinstated with all the views GYOW generated and he doesn’t wanna lose. Apparently guy doesn’t wanna do that and instead went on social media hate mail spree against LB.

Wow, for the first time in a while I just learnt something new about Lindsey and Fleetwood Mac. Cannot remember GYOW being in Forrest Gump and I have seen the movie at least twice in full and bits and pieces I have watched over and over as it is always on TV and you channel surf when it is on if you know the movie well.

My favourite movie soundtrack is My Girl. Makes me cry. Great movie. Don't think any Fleetwood Mac songs feature in it, but correct me if I am wrong?
