I don't really want anything.
I am absolutely impossible to shop for because everything that I really want, I buy for myself. I suppose I could've not bought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or Conversations with Tom Petty, or the Walk the Line Soundtrack, or Lindsey's Soundstage DVD or even that Joaquin Phoenix PETA DVD, since those would have been good inexpensive items that I could've let other people get for me...
But that means waiting until December 25th to own them. That means I couldn't enjoy them between now and that time and I just don't have that kind of patience.

I would be offended if someone gave me a gift certificate. It's indicative of someone not putting any thought or effort into giving you a gift that is meant to signify their love for you. Not that material objects can convey that, but gift certificates are precisely what's wrong with the holiday season and they show just how commercialized and meaningless the spirit of giving has become.

I like gift certificates. I've always maintained that the only way to be sure that you get what you want is to buy it for yourself - but it's better if you can buy it for yourself with someone else's money. :)
Besides, if people get me gift certificates, I don't have to worry about returning items that I don't want or that I already bought for myself.
I've been known to give gift certificates, but I generally only give them in addition to an actual tangible gift. I never give just a gift certificate, unless it's for someone like my brother, who lives out of state and for whom I haven't the slightest idea what to buy.

There is something I want, but I really REALLY shouldn't get.
Another rat.
Don't get me wrong, Stella is a sweetheart, but she's a bit of a spaz and I miss having a big cuddly boy around the house. And Stella is getting old fast (not as in I'm tired of her, but as in aging), she's already grown a tumor, which was removed about three weeks ago... and when you find one tumor on a rat, it's only a matter of time before you find another. :distress:

I don't know about anyone else, but I was unbelievably offended by this statement. Whether you believe Christ was who we says he ways or not, that's a damn foolish thing to say. 99.9% of most scholars at least believe he existed...and lived and died here on Earth. And any man that comes to this earth and never commits a crime, heals the sick, raises the dead, and dies by crucifixion saying its for our sins, can't be all that bad. Whether your above statement was tongue in cheek or not, I think we here on the Ledge could do without them. And just for the record, I am not a church going Bible-toter.

I wouldn't. Whether or not I actually like the gift, I'd be perfectly content knowing that someone cared enough to actually knit a sweater for me. That alone is worth more to me than something I go and pick out myself with a silly gift card. It isn't about material objects, it's about the heart behind the actual gift.

Wow. Would you rather get nothing from someone? I get gift cards from relatives I've not seen in years. They don't particularly "know" what i'm into anymore...I'm all grown up. It's the THOUGHT and EFFORT that counts. They are still giving. I see your point about it being an "empty" effort...but that's not entirely true. They thought about you enough to get you something...and perhaps they thought about you enough NOT to get you something you wouldnt want. Quit being so damned snobbish. We should consider ourselves lucky to live in a country where we can still afford to give and receive gifts from one another.

It doesn't particularly matter to me. It's not about receiving. I don't care if I receive an empty gift such as a gift card just because someone feels obligated to give me something. The spirit of giving has become bastardized by commercialism and it's pretty sad to me.

If it works for you, that's fine. But I find being given such things to be hollow. That's how I feel, whether you agree with me or not.

This statements stinks. You say "afford to give" as if giving is something that should be measured via money spent and material objects. That's not the case, thankfully. Not that anyone would know it these days.

Then give all those gift cards back to the people who send them to you and see how that makes them feel. And then afterwards, look deep down and see how you feel about that, all the while asking yourself if that was the "right" thing to do.
As far as what you said in the last sentence of the above post, I would completely agree. I would take that further, and say that the very concept of Christmas itself has been bastardized. Thus, the reason why I hate this holiday.

I'm enjoying the fact that "andymaycen" has been quiet since his/her post on page four. Also, I find it somewhat unnerving that no one has back up my rebuttal (also on page four). Even you, dissention! *wink*
I pretty much avoid religious discussions altogether, even in "real life." No one's opinion ever changes and it usually gets ugly. :o

True...however his statement had to be one of the more offensive ones I've read in some time. And I think I'm one of the more tolerant Ledgies around...generally I just ignore the comments. However I think it's important to remember that just because you don't understand something (i.e Andy's thoughts on Jesus for example), you surely don't want to mock them either. I don't think Mr. Andy would run around the local shopping mall trying to conjure spirits of the dead with ouija boards and candles.

I might have, had I been here;) I think there's a lot of hypocrisy going round when it comes to discussions about religion anyway. People attacking each other for the wrong reasons with the wrong arguments and so on.
Shame, could be interesting to have an honest open discussion.

Yes, it is shocking. I didn't particularly feel like debating the Jesus **** for the millionth time. While the beginning of his post was a bit much, I certainly didn't disagree with the rest of it. I would like to hear from some of those scholars that support the beliefs that "Jesus" healed the sick and raised the dead, though.

The latter part was my touch....the scholar part was relative to the sentence in which it was posted...about the fact that Jesus lived/died here on earth.

Ah, okay.
...about the fact that Jesus lived/died here on earth.
That's up for debate. Though it isn't particularly well made, I suggest seeing a documentary called "The God Who Wasn't There" by Brian Flemming. It won't change your mind, but it skillfully deconstructs the assertion that Jesus was real.

I've got to look into this because I've had quite a few intensely liberal history professors (some who would not identify as Christians) who all believed, based on their readings, that Jesus certainly did exist. Of course they have no comments whatsoever in class about whether or not he was the Messiah. (That would be wildly inappropriate and they know it; I wish all the English professors around here understood that, but that's another issue). Maybe someone's missing something.
Here's the site you can get it from, I doubt Blockbuster would have it.

What are my holiday wishes? Well, let's see....
My husband just left yesterday for a 6-month job in Chicago. He definitely won't be home for Thanksgiving. He'll try to make it home for Christmas, but that's not 100% assured.
We're flat broke at the moment. All the checking accounts with my husband's name on them are currently frozen, because one of his clients stopped payment on a rather large check he'd deposited into his business account, then wrote him another large (but lesser amount) check, which he attempted to deposit. When he did, due to our lovely Patriot Act, it raised "red flags", and now we're being treated like terrorists. They froze every account with the bank which his name is on... including our joint account, where all the bills are paid out of, many of which are automated payments. So we've been bouncing payments all over the place... car insurance, child's tuition, credit cards, mortgage payments, etc., and are getting even more bill collectors calling than we were before. We get at least 2 an hour. (Thank goodness for caller id, at least.) The only 2 credit cards I have are maxed out, and I only have $6.00 to last me until our accounts are unfrozen.
Then I discovered this morning, when I was about to drive my son to the park, that my car wouldn't start. Have no ideas what's wrong with it, but it's not good. It's not the battery... the lights can still be turned on. But when I try to start the car, it chugs for 1/2 a second, and goes totally dead. So it will have to be towed to the car dealership tomorrow. Considering all our money is frozen, and I have no money left on my credit cards, how I'll pay for this is beyond me. I did get an extended warranty, but I'm not sure if it's still in effect or whether it will cover whatever's wrong with the car. I pray it is and it does. Otherwise, I'm totally f*cked.
So what do I want for the holidays? To know that I won't be homeless. Because if I am, I may not even have a car to sleep in. (Of course, even if the car is fixed, I may have no insurance left, because this was the second insurance payment in a row that bounced.) And I also wish to have some shred of my sanity left, and not feel like a total failure who can't even pay her f*cking bills.

I have to agree with you wholeheartedly !!!!!!! No, I don't even go to church, but I do believe !!!

Onto the gift card debate, since it's such an important issue. I've always appreciated gift cards since they allow me to get exactly what I want, but on the other hand, I'd much rather get an actual gift. There's something disheartening about recieving only that little cardboard box with the plastic card inside, and it conveys a lack of thought and effort - in some cases.

I feel kind of jerky wanting things when people like Stargazer are having such troubles. :sorry: But here's my list anyway.
Hubby's getting me a remote starter for the new car - my old one had it & I reeeeeeeeally want it in this car too. A necessity in Buffalo.
Asking mom for a nice toaster oven. I had a small old one, but the knob broke & I'm tired of heating up the oven just to cook up some Bagel Bites. ;)
DVDs:
Gilmore Girls (any season except 1)
Lindsey's Soundstage
CDs:
New Neil Diamond
Cyndi lauper "The Body Acoustic"
Martina McBride's new one
Melissa Etheridge's Greatest Hits
Other than that - still no clue. I'm always up for silver earring or funky watches, or picture frames/albums. Gift cards - they're OK. I rarely buy them, but I don't get upset if I receive one. People are busy these days, we've had a lot of turmoil in the fam lately, so if people don't have the time & energy to pick out a more personal gift for me, I'll live.

I never noticed that as much with her as with other singers that I call the Car Alarm Vocalists...Whitney, Pariah, Screechine, LaBelle. I guess she does go full bore more often that not. I find her voice to have a nice tone to it, so it doesn't make the hair on the back of my neck stand up like those others. She isn't shrill. And maybe yelling isn't as annoying to me as screaming. She doesn't have the same sense of dynamics as, say Trisha Yearwood, and she is pretty far along in her career so she may never learn to sing with that kind of grace. I like some of her stuff anyway, though.
Supposedly I'm getting an iPod from my mom, which she was supposed to get me for my birthday (which was August 26) so we'll see if that happens. I'm definitely asking for Arrested Development Season 2. And clothes and money. That's good enough for me. :)

I know Firefly was just reeeeally cheap at Deep Discount DVD, but they sold out and it's on major back order.
You can normally get Firefly for around $30, I don't know if it'll be on sale much this Christmas. But you need to get it no matter what anyways ;)
I bought myself an iPod for Christmas, so iPod accessories would be nice. (I'm still waiting for an FM transmitter that I preordered from the manufacturer a month ago.) I think people may get me iTunes gift certificates since they know I have an iPod. (No, I'm not the quiet type anymore. ) I have put CDs & DVDs on a list to my husband. I usually make out pretty good since my birthday is in January close to Christmas, so sometimes what I don't get for Christmas, I get for my birthday  or if I get money for my birthday, I'll just buy what I didn't get & wanted for Christmas.

I know it's been in danger of being cancelled from the beginning, due to low ratings. I honestly don't understand why it's had such a hard time finding viewers. It's the best comedy to come around in a long time, IMO. And with all the other crap on the air (particularly on FOX!), it's such a shame that this show didn't make it.

You know, I just thought of something regarding the whole debate about gift cards as the preferred gift from ill equipped gift buying relatives.
I had this hysterical, foul mouthed aunt. Aunt Dorothy. And she was notoriously stingy. She was the queen of giving gifts to people that were actually things that had been sitting in her house for years and she was tired of. It became a bit of a joke in our family when I was about ten. That was the point at which I was old enough that I started getting hand me down stuff from her rather than cool things like Spirographs and Lincoln Logs.
So, later on, in my late twenties or early thirties, she gave me two things that really threw me for a loop : A pair of fingernail clippers and a pen. The pen was in a faded naugahyde type sleeve with an inkstain on it. I thought both gifts extremely odd. Who wants a used pair of nail clippers ? Why the pencase with the stain on it ? Nonetheless, I put them in a drawer with a smirk and didn't think much about it. I thanked her profusely as always and that was that.
I ran across them about 4 or 5 years ago when I moved last. My aunt died in 1998. When I found those stupid things, I hooted like I had laid an egg. I had a great laugh, and shed a tear or two. Then I cleaned the damned clippers with alcohol and a teeny tiny brush and went out and tracked down refills for the ink pen which turned out to be a rather nice circa 1960's Cross Pen. I am sure it belonged to my uncle. I now use it to sign all my important documents, and I use the clippers all the time. I even had them sharpened. And when I clip my nails too short or otherwise misuse the clippers, I holler "Sonofabitch Frank!" which my Aunt was known for exclaiming once during a Thanksgiving dinner. Then I laugh like a crazy man and remember my kooky Aunt.
So the moral of the story is that maybe those crappy gifts from relatives aren't always so crappy after all.

I have a wish but I'm starting to think it will only come true in a perfect world. :(
My mom keeps asking me for a Christmas list, but I really don't need anything... if my friends and family stay healthy and safe I'll be happy.... and a stable job situation would be nice too.

Well, first off it would be nice if the doctors could find out what the hell is wrong with my grandmother. If anything happens to her, my mother and the rest of the family will be a complete wreck. I don't want to see them go through that. It'll tear me to pieces.
Okay, on a lighter note...
A record player
Baton
Golden Girls Season 1 and 3
Lindsey's Soundstage
Behind the Mask
Cheers Season 5 and 6...
Ha, I think it's funny while most people are asking for an iPod, I'm asking for a record player!
I figure most of my family will give me money, as usual, so I'll pawn my iPod I have now and get an iPod Video...
And yes, giftcards are amazing... :)

I like gift certificates. I've always maintained that the only way to be sure that you get what you want is to buy it for yourself - but it's better if you can buy it for yourself with someone else's money. :)
While I agree with that statement, I also agree with Diss, I mean, I kinda like getting stuff I would never buy for myself, that had thought put into it, and is unique to my personality. Does that make any sense? Of course people sometimes get it wrong, but that's what return/exchange is for. At least someone tried and was thinking about me...that's what counts.

There's one little hitch to this idea...
The only things that I would never buy for myself, I wouldn't buy because either:
a) I don't want them.
b) They cost too damn much money. (And if any of my friends buy anything that falls into this second category, they're likely to piss me off because I don't want them spending that kind of cash.)
I know I'm probably sounding like a materialistic bitch (which may not be too far from the truth) but in actual fact, I don't much like receiving gifts at all. Giving them on the other hand...
The presents are already piling up by my fireplace, all wrapped in pretty paper and bows. :D

That is so sweet. I love giving presents too. My packages from Target just keep arriving. :D I actually dreamed about wrapping last night!
On edit: For Christmas there are lots of books and DVDs that I want. Even more-so, at the risk of sounding trite, I would like to see an end to the war and I'm with Homie on the cure for cancer. Peace and good health to all.

Really? My husband gave me a spa package for my birthday this year and it was DIVINE! That's something I would never buy for myself not necessarily because it was too much money, but because I don't normally binge on the spa you know? It was really sweet of him...he got a great bonus for that one :laugh:.

Oh yes, I've been given those a few times, and I LOVE them! I can't afford to get massages or manicures very often, so I love when I get a spa certificate, so I can pamper myself.

If you're not sure where to go, I'd reccommend using spawish.com and getting a gift certificate through them. Your roommate will then have the choice to go to whatever spa she would like as most gift certificates are accepted at many locations. In fact, you can even pull up a list of where they're accepted before going in to redeem.

I cannot believe you haven't seen it. You will love it. And if you do not, then you are an infidel, and part of the problem. :woohoo:
I think Amazon has them for $32 right now if you order them together. I think I'm ordering a few sets from them for gifts this year. I'd rather do the Amazon thing than the frightening Black Friday thing. Diss, do you know if Best Buy will have the Black Friday prices on the website? Some stores do that...
Oh, Hayley. I have a new addiction. That show is ****ing brilliant. I watched almost the entire first disc of season one this afternoon and my cheeks are killing me from laughing so hard. Gob and Lucille especially put me into hysterics. I curse myself for missing out on it so much. -_-

I've caught a few episodes here and there, but I just kept forgetting it was on. A damned shame because it kicks ass. Will Arnett makes me pee myself. The episode where he chipped his tooth on a candy apple is one of my favorites so far. And Jessica Walter is something else.
