Can't really tell too much from the clip.

I have never heard her attempt to sing before, and it isn't awful. It isn't remarkable, but it isn't awful. The production sounds interesting. When is this out ?

BTW, the only thing I could think of when I saw Rapidshare was of course, Rapidskank.

Sounds like she slowed down the verses to me. I have a newly discovered soft spot for Hohan (I curse you, Marissa), though, so I kind of dig it.

It comes out December 6th.

I pretty much hate what I've heard. No shock there.

I can't stand that chick anymore. I figure they work some magic in the studio to make her sound like that. Even so, she's still nothing special. And she's f*cking annoying and can bite me, etc.

I'm waiting for Jyqm to tell me how immature I'm acting. :wavey: I'm probably not worth his time, though.

You're acting immature, Hillary. Don't be jealous of La Hohan's superhuman talents. A voice like that is heard once in a lifetime. Get down on your knees and praise her for her awesomeness.

Ha. You thought I was joking. How cute.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting to be bowled over, but I was pleasantly surprised. I much prefer to hear that over Hootchie Spears and "Don't Phunk With My Heart" for the 3,871,037th time this year. I've heard that damned song more times than Fergie's had her face worked on, and that says a lot.

I think I'd rather hear "Don't Phunk" than "My Humps" anyday! That song makes me want to commit random acts of violence.

This is the perfect example of how with computer assisted production, echo, editing, changing the key, slowing the song down...ANYONE....can sing.

I HOPE STEVIE MAKES MILLIONS IN ROYALTIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, hope is spurs young fans to learn who Stevie is and go out and buy Bella Donna.

On another note....anyone have "Hello Its Me...by Todd Rundgren LIVE with Stevie on backing vocals with Darryl Hall and John Oates??...If so...please share?

Sigh. Could have been worse... Amen to the cardboard comment though.

I find myself thinking of the new version of Alice Cooper's Poison. They took all the kick-ass out of it and replaced it with sugar sweetness and over production. Sickening stuff all round.

By the way, I heard a cover of Stand Back in a shop at the weekend ... sounds a bit like Lulu? Never heard of it before...

It was.....blah. Thats the best way I can describe it. I have no issue either way for someone covering Stevie Nicks, because if I dont like it, I just wont listen. But my reaction to Lohan's version of Edge is just...blah. The first time I heard Stevie's Edge...the voice alone made me go.....AHHHHHHHHHHH. This just makes me go.....oh. At least my curiousity is satisified, thanks Dissention.

It's OK. Not nearly as bad as I thought. A bit too breathy for me (is that a real word? breathy?) I'd probably rather someone with better pipes do it, but I don't mind it. I won't change the station if it comes on, and I hope Stevie gets a bit more exposure with the kids these days through this. And makes a bunch of cash. :)

Serrart
11-19-2005, 07:45 PM
I can't help but ask...why do so many people say 'Oh, it's cool if there's this heinous cover of a classic song as long as Stevie gets more money.' ??? I can think of about a hundred people I'd rather see get more money. People who need money. She is definitely not on the list.

Well, if those less fortunate hundred people wrote brilliant songs that became iconic enough to help the launch of a young artist, I'd agree. But if the choice is between Stevie and some other ultra rich artist, I prefer Stevie. And it's good for her image too.

Yeppers. It's quite heinous. Horribly truncated to the point where it sounds like a tween twit singing about her crush on a seventeen year old boy. I'm particularly curious to know why Miss Hohan accents the end of each line with a little bit of throat-clearing. Someone get the bitch a lozenge. She sounds like Heathcliff coughing up a fish bone. The pace is deathly; it simply plods along without one single thing ever happening that piques your interest.

I do like the bridge a lot, though. It saves it a bit.

TwistedGypsy
11-22-2005, 07:28 PM
Well...she does a better job than myself. The first thing that irked me was the fact that she said "Just like a white winged dove" instead of "just like the white winged dove". I almost wanted her to do the yell but atleast she knew her limits. It overall left me feeling empty, there was no climax and not much feeling. Just a decent singer singing an amazing song.

I suspect that rag tied to the mic stand is supposed to be an homage of some sort to Stevie. Didn't see the perofrmance, but I suspect it had pitch problems. I mean, really, no one expects this girl to be a real musician of any kind. She's just fulfilling a contract with somebody.

Anyway, I listened to the song and I don't detest it. It's nothing worth talking much about, really. It isn't horrid, and it isn't very good. Too bad. They could have done something interesting with it. I do agree with Diss on the bridge. I like that part. She changed up the melody a bit, and it caught my ear.

BTW, I am glad she went dark with her hair again. Hopefully she will gain 10 pounds and look healthy again.

this is concering just the studio version..what happened to the "well I hear you" verse??? I'm not really complaining cuz I wanted it to die quickly, but I've always liked the..."i'm a few years older than you are....my love" (of course....stevie style...so  )

And once again, it will be up to us to educate the masses about Ms. Nicks. :p Remember how many people thought Landslide was written by the Dixie Chicks?

I missed it, btw. I am pissed. I was flipping back & forth between the AMA's & Gilmore Girls, then Amazing Race. And I missed it. The evening’s most uncomfortable moment came when Lindsay Lohan, in her much-touted “prime-time network singing debut,” sang “Confessions of a Broken Heart,” her ode to her fractured relationship with her father, and covered Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen.” Backed by a slew of singers, Lohan turned in an erratic and miserable performance. In what was perhaps a wise move, Lohan’s teen queen rival Hilary Duff chose to lip-sync “Beat of My Heart.”

I have nothing against covers and think every song could have another interpretation, art is an open door, IMO. Even if to be a singer should be a necessary element to try to make a cover... someone must have forgotten to tell Miss Lohan.

It's not quite as cool as the audio that was passed around earlier. The pretty little girl up onstage seems a little more phony when you ask her to do "Edge of Seventeen" live. Then I suggest you contact her and tell her to perform better next time. It wouldn't have been half bad if the actual song hadn't been so heinously castrated. While I'm chuffed to bits that she's piled on a few pounds and actually looks like something other than an Ethiopian fetus these days, the point of her prancing around that gaudy stage while singing "Just like the white winged dove" over & over was, quite simply, lost on me. I've just finally gotten a chance to watch the video from the AMA's. I think Lindsay seemed incredibly nervous and I hate to say it, but generally, the first note that exits your mouth is a fairly good indicator of the way the rest of the performance is going to go -- that first note did not bode well for her. I don't think Lindsay is a bad singer at all. In fact, I think she can carry a tune quite well. Do I think her record label overestimated how this would translate to a live performance? Absolutely. However, they must have had some inkling because they hired three backing vocalists for her. Do I think this is going to hurt her album sales? Not in the slightest. Do I think Stevie was snickering on her treadmill watching this performance? Probably not. Cause she's going to ride that cash cow for all it's worth. In short, I don't think it's Lohan's covering of the song that anyone should be mad about -- it's the fact that with any cover of a song, it takes on a new life, new form, and new meaning. It's just not Stevie. Plain and simple. And it's not going to be. Get over it.

I'm disappointed. Everyone had me all built up and it really wasn't as horrendous as people have said. It was still pretty awful, but it wasn't like, Ashlee Simpson at the Orange Bowl awful. She'd have to try harder to be that bad. I really only heard a couple of parts that sounded off-key. The most painful part of it was not the singing but her prancing and frolicking. That was just ridiculous to me. But besides that, this isn't anything that I can laugh at for months, really. My mom's going to be so disappointed. All evening she's been like, "Did you check the board to see if anyone posted a video? Did you try to do a Google search for a video???" She was all about it when I played the song for her, which she couldn't stand. I'm afraid the video won't be bad enough for her. :(

Yeah, it's really bad. I felt really sorry for the audience who had to sit through it and the musicians who had to play behind her. Her basic problem is that she can't sing. And because of that, her pitch is all over the map. She has courage, though, to be able to get up on stage knowing that she cannot sing. She must be one tough cookie. Or perhaps just incredibly clueless.

These days because of Pro Tools, you can take any celebrity and throw them in the studio and release an album. No wonder the music industry is in the ****hole.

I don't think the performance was all that terrible. That weird intro song sure had a few clunker notes, though. As far as Edge goes, well, what are ya gonna do ? I couldn't always pick her voice out from the army of backup singers. The music was looser and not as good as the studio cut. For a teen schlock product it coulda been worse. I prefer it to the Squishing Gourds cover of "Landslide" any day.

Sorry, I was out of town, and then didn't bother to even open up this thread until just now...

Anyway, as 25-second clips go, I can't say I hate it. No possible way I could have such a strong reaction to something so... bland? typical? boring?

They've probably got a big computer out in a secret warehouse in L.A., and all you have to do is tell it, "Give us a version of this song that someone can sing over and we can play in teenage dance clubs and on Radio Disney," and it takes whatever chord progression you give it, and it spits out a MIDI file that sounds exactly like that. And then grab whoever their latest starlet is and say, "Now, you don't have to sing it, and we certainly don't want you to put any emotion or personality into it, but if you could just kind of speak the words clearly and sort of on-key, that'd be great. But don't worry too much if you can't do it exactly on-key, we've got a ProTools guy who can fix that."

And so it goes. The song will surely be very popular among its intended high school audience; dance clubs and radio stations will play it ad nauseum because they're told to, and there are plenty of people who will like it simply because they keep hearing it everywhere and it gets ingrained in their skulls. So the cogs in the machine will keep turning, and I'll remain blissfully oblivious to all of it, purchasing and listening to the music that I like, that I find on my own, and I'll keep on ignoring whatever I don't like. So it's really no skin off my ass that Lohan did this cover. I can't say that I've got it in me to expend any mental or emotional energy hating her or being repelled by the song or any of that. Not worth it. Why should I put more effort into hating the song than she put into recording it?

johndoe
11-24-2005, 03:57 PM
The only part of it that was horrible was the opening song. The Father to Daughter part. It was like a really bad karaoke. But she wasn't HORRIBLE on EO17, just very cheesy. I liked that she didn't use the original guitar riff. It sort of distanced herself from the real thing.

Jyqm
11-24-2005, 04:28 PM
I must not be hip to the super-solid sayin'-somethin' sounds of today, because I actually like this!

What is it you like about it, David? I listened to the full song trying to think, "What would David like here?" and I couldn't come up with much. The song actually starts out kind of interesting, but once the vocal comes in, the whole production just gets overblown and sloppy. I like that little piano figure that lurks in the back of the mix sometimes, but other than that, it's just a bunch of chunky computerized guitars and painfully weak drum effects. The strings could have been interesting, but they just get buried under the wall of Garage Band sound effects.

So this is a new female singer? Lindsay something-or-other?

Lindsay Lohan is a product of the Walt Disney Corporation. This is what they do now that they've dessicated their various animation departments.

Lindsay and her ilk (Hillary Duff, Raven Symone, etc.) are really no different than Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck. They're just "live action" Disney characters: personas for Walt Disney Productions to build TV shows and movies around, faces for them to slap on lunch boxes and T-shirts. With the added bonus that now they can build musical careers around these characters as well, something that never really worked with the cartoons outside of specific movie soundtracks.

Creating these starlets is really the only thing that Disney seems to be any good at these days. But they're masterful at it.

I just assumed he was joking. :)
carry on.

I have always assumed that David is being 100% facetious and 100% serious at all times.

Only a very special person gives 200%.

No one in their right mind should try and tackle Edge for their first live performance. If she really wanted to do a Stevie song, she should have tried Dreams. That vocal is far easier.

I went to get gas this morning and inside the station, Stevie's Edge was playing on the radio. There was a guy and his girlfriend standing in line, laughing about Hohan's performance. I laughed at the things they were saying and the woman turned to me and said "THIS is the best. Always will be." So, not everyone is going to be hoodwinked by Hohan, thankfully.

So I don't know if this has been mentioned yet....but Lindsay Lohan will be on Leno tonight if anyone wants to see if she might sing EO17 or talks about it with Jay. Could be interesting!

I take it she doesn't need a silver spoon to dig her grave, now, does she? :)

[QUOTE=GardenStateGirlie]I don't think it's Lohan's covering of the song that anyone should be mad about -- it's the fact that with any cover of a song, it takes on a new life, new form, and new meaning.

So, on Leno she said that she's going to be in some movie about John Lennon. In that case, does she realize that EO17 is about (among other things) Lennon??? How could she if she's turning into a horny pop song? As they say on MST3K, it "befuddles my dumb cracker mind."

It befuddles my dumb cracker mind that people insist the song is "about" John Lennon.

The film actually sounds somewhat interesting. I think Jared Leto is playing Chapman.

You know, that's undeniably logical. But you see, that's the difference between you and me. I'm 23 but have been feeling 17 recently and therefore I'm mad at the world and get what I perceive as pleasure from hating things. And I'm trying my best to hate other people in order to feel better about myself. Oh, and I've decided that I don't want to be gay anymore, 'cept there isn't a damn thing I can do about that. So you see, there are some other factors playing into this. Sad, eh? (That was a rhetorical question in case you weren't sure).

Whatever gets you through the day, darlin'. I'm sure Lindsay won't mind being your punching bag if it makes you feel better. I doubt she thinks her cover is all that great, either. She's just doing what she's told and getting paid millions of dollars for it.

Do I need to trot out all those quotes where Stevie says it's partly about John Lennon? I'm not that kind of girl. Well, what I mean is that I'm lazier than people who go pull out Stevie quotes when necessary.

Stevie says lots of things, but that doesn't make them true, even when they're about her own songs. I can buy into the idea that John Lennon's death partly inspired her to write the song, but the lyrics really don't seem to have anything to do with him at all, except where they're so vague and "mysterious" that they could be about just about anything.

I like Leto. I would probably see the film in spite of her.

Lohan herself isn't a totally terrible actress when she puts her mind to it. And given that this is at least ostensibly a serious film, I doubt the director will let her get away with any cutesy, "Tee hee, I'm Lindsay Lohan!" crap.

Is she an idiot? The movie is about RFK's assassination, not Lennon's. The cast that's been assembled for it is shockingly good, too.

I think those are two different movies. She mentioned that movie as well. I may not have been following the interview well enough but I thought they were talking about two different film projects.

Gee, she's morbid. Two assassination flicks?!

I can't wait to see the RFK movie, though. And her new movie from Robert Altman.

Yes, the girl loves comedy. The movies are Bobby (with Tony Hopkins :blob2: sorry Curtis) and Chapter 27 with Jared Leto.

I'm very curious to see the new one by Altman's too, even if mainly for the rest of the cast an P.T. Anderson's magic touch.

More Hohan hatin'...

http://www.edmontonsun.com/Entertainment/Weekend/2005/11/25/1322757-sun.html

Anyone who caught the musical horror show known as the American Music Awards on Tuesday night caught actress Lindsay Lohan attempting to sing.

Lohan, ostensibly there to shill her second album, A Little More Personal, in stores Dec. 6, was a musical monstrosity.

Adding insult to injury, Lohan broke into Stevie Nicks's Edge of Seventeen halfway through her off-key performance of her own new single, Daughter to Father.
