I know I start this thread every year. What's your Thanksgiving plans???
I'm hosting it this year. My grandpa died earlier this year, and my grandma and mom are not in the mood for the holidays, period. So, since they took care of me when my Jason died, it's only right for me to take care of them. I have about 15 people to cook for. I'll make sure to have football on the big screen for all the men. I will find a few board games for the kids. Of course, I will be running my ass off between cooking and cleaning... but I look forward to it. After gorging myself all day long, I will stay up too late that night, and wake up too early the next morning for Black Friday festivities!

My Mom died right after the holidays(and we could tell it was coming). For Thanksgiving, she was still able to go to my Aunt's house. For Christmas, we(just 5 of us) got takeout from Crackerbarrel. We did no presents that year, too. It was really weird, trying to celebrate, when there really wasn't much to celebrate. Death sucks, no?
This year, I'm invited to my Aunt's house in Columbus. As long as my dog's up for it, I'm going.

Sorry about your mom. It does make it hard. The last 2 years have been bad for me, but it doesn't seem so bad so far this year. It is hard trying to celebrate while greiving. Although I grieve for my grandfather, I'm not as bad as my grandmother or my mother.

I have no plans for Thanksgiving. I'm going home for a week (oh, god.) for Christmas and so I decided to forgo Thanksgiving.
I think I'm going to go get the tattoo I've been wanting on my wrist that Wednesday night so I have a few days off to recover without worrying about working with it.

I'll be spending the holiday with friends - and no doubt, making my famous, fabulous sweet potato casserole. I'll post the recipe later tonight...Reckless Kelly is playing at the Continental Club the Friday after turkey day. I'm looking forward to that, it's been awhile since I've seen the boys. For some of us, it's always drinking season. *hic*
I'm also gonna try making this - sounds easy, and delicious!
Parmesan Herbed Bread
Ingredients
1 (7-oz.) pkg. Martha White® Quick and Easy Extra Rich Buttermilk Biscuit
Mix
1 (6-oz.) pkg. Martha White® Buttermilk Cornbread Mix

1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or rosemary
1 cup (8-oz.) sour cream
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs, lightly beaten

For 12 hours of work (yes, I work 12 hrs every shift), I will get paid for 18.....so it's time and a 1/2.
....and I love being a Registered Nurse. It's really really stressful though...especially on a Medicine floor. I have up to 6 patients a night with all different reasons why they are there....chest pain, pneumonia, diabetic foot ulcers.....It gets crazy.

Uh, I think I'm going to rewrite papers, and I think this guy I slept with last summer is coming to visit me. We may go camping, but we may not cause I only have four days off. I'll probably make stuffing, b/c that's my favorite part of the dinner.

Thanksgiving plans are very mellow for me this year. Normally I head up to San Francisco to be with my family. My brother has his wedding anniversary, my sister-in-law has her birthday and she is expecting my nephew on December 7th, then a bris 8 days later.
So with that in mind, I'm doing Thanksgiving with my cuz (my best friend too) here at my place. She and I are very unconventional so I'm making Turkey Spaghetti for Thanksgiving. One of my specialties. The red wine will flow...

I'm cooking at a homeless shelter for half the day, then I'm going to my mother's house for Thanksgiving with the usual crew of people I can't stand; my uncle, his ex-wife, my aunt and her family, etc. I don't know why because there's hardly anything there that I'm actually going to eat and it's not really worth the aggravation of seeing people that bug me. But I'll go, like I always do.

To be honest, I'd usually rather have fries than Tiramisu.
I haven't had Spumoni in a long time, though.
My Italian restaurant is called: "My mom's house" or "My Grandma's house".
They don't get fancy, though, they just make the regular meat, pasta, (cheese) dishes that taste really good. We often have Lasagna for Xmas...

Do they smoke? The ex in laws invite me every year but they smoke like a train. I'd be sick for a week if I went. So I just send a poinsetta or a pie or something.

Have you ever had the tiramisu cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory? Drooooooool....
Here's my famous sweet potato casserole recipe:
2 lbs. mashed sweet potatoes
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
4 tsp. cinnamon
nutmeg and ginger to taste
4 eggs
1 1/2 sticks margarine, melted
Mix ingredients - bake in greased casserole for 20 min. at 350.
Add topping:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup crushed corn flakes
1 - 8 oz. can crushed pineapple
4 Tbls. margarine, melted
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Bake an additional 10 minutes
If it appears a bit jiggly when you take it out of the oven, don't worry, it will thicken up after a few minutes. I make this every year and it always gets rave reviews!

You shouldn't let her have all that MSG. Sesly.
And my comment does not apply to crab dumplings, which can be eaten whenever you want.
BTW, you could make some good rice/chicken breast/veggie stir fry at home in a cinch.... Get a jar of teryiaki sauce, or some sesame oil...Mixed veggies in a bag...(cheap!) and god, rice is soooo cheap. :)

I know you were... it's cool!
I need to only eat out once a month, but it turns out to be once a week. Sometimes, the single mom routine gets overwhelming, and going out is all too convienent. My mom even rags me about how much we eat out, and says I give her too big of portions. I let her eat what she's comfortable with. No more, no less. Is it good? Probably not. But, I am a work in progress. My smoking habit was first to go, and next is my eating habits. Time and will power......

That's very commendable, the smoking thing.
I don't think once a week is unreasonable at all, if you have the money. Like, not at all. Unless you only get non nutritional crap.
Heck, if I was a mom, and had the money, I'd eat out very often. I mean, if I could afford the more nutritional places.
Usually kids won't eat after they are full unless it's something non nutritious. (chips, cookies, candy, fried foods, ice cream, etc.)
So, whatev to your mom.
Chinese, if ordered right, is one of the more healthy eat out things you can have. Better then pizza or hamburgers, yeah? :)

Thanks about the smoking. It's been over 2 months now. I don't even really miss it. unless I'm drinking...
Sara and I don't eat chips, cookies, candy, ice cream. I bake most of the meat I cook. I buy very lean meats, and we eat mostly white meat (pork, chicken, turkey) I don't deep fry fries. But, we eat non nutritional stuff when we go out. I mean, tonight it was Chinese. Last Friday, it was pizza, the week before, it was Italian, and before that, it was Mexican. It's as much a laziness treat for myself as it is a go-out-to-eat treat for Sara.

Golabki (pronounced guh-woomp-key) is pigs in the blanket - beef, rice & spice mixture wrapped in cabbage leaves & baked in tomato sauce or soup (we use condensed tomato soup and do them in the pressure cooker.)
Pierogi are like big raviolis, but the dough tastes a bit different. They're filled with farmer's cheese, mashed potatoes or kraut. You boil them & fry them in butter with onions. I've never made them from scratch, they're a b*tch & it takes all day.
Lazy pierogi is rotini noodles with kraut, mushrooms, fried onions & pieces of fried bacon mixed in it. Some people use cream of mushoom soup in it, but we prefer some bacon grease & a touch of kraut juice. Mmmmmmmmm....
