I don't think any of those experienced Ledgies were around when it was. I think it was 1995 or 1996? I started reading in 1996, and I think the only people that are still around from then are David and Chili, although I'm sure there are more.

It's called "Intelligent Design." The ruler and Creator of the universe, Jesus Christ, personally stepped in and got involved. Fleetwood Mac, evidently, it one of His favorite groups. So, He took it upon Himself to start this site. However, He didn't quite yet realize the vagueries of HTML at the time, so He got Marty and Lis involved. The rest, as they say, is history.
I realize very shortly that someone is going to read what I wrote and think I was serious about it. So to those persons...it's a joke.

Wasn't there some big **** storm (or several) back in the day as well? I seem to remember the Ledge being infamous for all manner of idiotic drama, though I never read it back then.

There's remarkably little real drama on the Ledge these days. At least in the threads I read. This is one of the tamest forums around.

And yet, people still whine.... "quit arguing! You're making me sad! I can't take it, even though I'm not involved!"
they say....
I think I joined back in 1997 around the time of The Dance.
Remember how ugly it got around that time and a bunch of people got banned and created "The Black Ledge." There was tons of hate around here back then. And maybe Marty shut the site down for a while and everyone had to re-register when it opened back up...and that was the start of the moderators? Does this sound familiar at all or did I dream it all up? Anyone remember the details of what went down?
Brad

Such is the nature of a moderated forum. It attracts the whiners.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I don't know the details, though, because as I said, I never read the Ledge back then. I frequented AMFM on Usenet instead, which was actually semi-bustling at the time, as opposed to the utter ghost town it is today.

God Amber, stop creating drama on the Ledge! You're ruining it for everyone.
Sorry.
Happy.Nice.Gooey.Ledge.Happy.Nice.Gooey.Ledge.
I have to admit, things are more interesting when no one ever debates, or says anything that someone else doesn't agree with. It's also helpful if no one says anything funny, as it may be sarcastic, and that is just not right! People don't come here to be amused, for goodness sake. And they certainly don't come here to express opinions.

There was another major battle on here in 2001 over the many warped posts and vile PMS perpetrated by probably the most repellant Fleetwood Mac/Stevie troll ever and resulted in the Chit Chat forum being closed down for weeks.I usually don't get involved in too much bickering although it can be fun to read, but this particular creature was a different story and too much to pass up.

I got a lap top around '98-'99 and knew about this place and would visit off and on. I never did post cuz I didn't think I had enough FM knowledge at the time....plus I was a high school geek at the time and studied a lot.
I didn't start "posting" until 2002....but it was on Nancy's board.
I officially joined The Ledge in 2003, right after LIB to share my experience...been here ever since....and have made awesome friends...on and off the board. :)

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I don't know the details, though, because as I said, I never read the Ledge back then. I frequented AMFM on Usenet instead, which was actually semi-bustling at the time, as opposed to the utter ghost town it is today.Yes, a small group of loose-knit friends with evil in their hearts & sadism in their blood -- or maybe it was blood in their sadism -- began ragging on other fans & posting their squibs on a deserted ledge page. Well, one of that loose-knit group had an old Internet friend who was very clever & very playful & very vengeful. One of them was supposed to go to the Fleetwood Mac show at Mountain View in 1997 with the other, & for various reasons didn't, & the other became hurt & angry & knew about the deserted ledge page because of having been told about it (purely for reading pleasure), & so adopted the moniker "Sue" & posted to the active ledge pages the link to the deserted ledge page filled with all sorts of snarf & nastiness -- merely as a way to wreak vengeance on the other person (who posted some snarf & nastiness on the deserted ledge page) -- & then the **** hit the fan because then all the ledgies (Type A, Type B, Type O negative, aggressive, passive-aggressive, active-passive, Passover-active, & Passover-passive) found out that this small group of loose-knit ledgies was having fun at their expense, & that was that.
Dozens of problems from various corners of the world followed in the ensuing years. But with each Ledge alteration, the Ledge got harder & harder to read & use. Although by now, I think just about everyone has adapted to the smilies & the User Control Panel & the banners & the avatars & the search function & the logons & the passwords & the members list & the FAQ & the 14 different ledges & the preview function & the additional options & the file attachment capabilities & the link-parsing functions.
And that's the story of the Legend of the Three Birds of the Ledge.

Not sure if it makes a difference to the point you're making, but they were actually talking about people on The Ledge itself, not another message board on another site. There was an "abandoned" forum that I guess most people thought was non-functional at the time since it had no subject assigned to it and no one had ever posted on it. So the trash talking was actually in another forum on The Ledge.
Anyway, just thought I'd add that even though it probably doesn't matter.

Actually, that's better. When people go to whole other sites, that you may not even see, just to make fun of you - that's really cowardly (by the way, whoever you are, I am tracing your IP address :) ) and lame.

MAJOR BLOW-UPS ON THE LEDGE?!?!? You obviously were never on the old alt.music.fleetwood-mac, which used to have all kinds of major blow-ups, but absolutely no moderation. It totally rocked! Well, at least until that Stan guy came around and cross posted to the Supertramp, Aerosmith, and AC/DC newsgroups, and somehow got a bunch of Nazis to chase him down there. The Supertramp fans said that guy would kill the newsgroup, and really, they were right. But, he was hardly the only weirdo. Can anybody say Jim Nalbandian??? (That was for David and chiliD.) Relatively speaking, amfm made the Ledge look like a walk in Disneyland.

Either way. If you want to defend yourself go ahead, if you'd rather just ignore it, that works too. It's the getting all personally offended and making a huge stink about it and voting people off the island (even if they're stupid nerds) that I generally roll my eyes at.
I mean, as much as I enjoy the Ledge and completely understand why Marty and Lis prefer to run their private forum on their personal website this way, my perspective basically stems from the fact that I don't really care for the idea of "moderated" newsgroups or message boards.

That's because I don't see any of those types of posts from those types of people. If I see somebody being childishly mean-spirited, I'll gladly tell them to grow up and get over themselves, if you'd like me to. Although it'd probably be more my inclination to just ignore such idiocy.
But in the meantime, yeah, everybody else who likes to play the whiny victim needs to grow up, too.
Analogy: If George Bush came out tomorrow and said, "Well, shucks, folks, I wish we could do something about the price of oil, but those big bullies in OPEC say they're gonna keep gouging us," I certainly hope that nobody's first reaction would be, "Aww, poor George, he's right, those OPEC bullies need to stop being bullies!" The better, non-whiny reaction is: "Well ****, George, quit whining about it and get off your ass and start working around the problem by coming up with a new energy policy that emphasizes developing alternative fuels."
See, Jyqmbo, you're just too cool for us! :xoxo:

To be fair, quim, usually when someone is being made fun of on here, they don't get whiny so much as pissed. So then they say something kinda pissed like.
I would say more "whining" happens with the people who get upset when other people argue, or are what they deem as "negative".
The only Kyle I remember is the guy who wouldn't shut up about Madonna.
Oh lord. I thought I'd repressed my memories of him.
What we really need is to get Bill Gamelson over here. A real charmer, that Bill Gamelson.

Well, this is all very interesting. I've heard many different versions of this story and each has a different slant. I have to say, while I sympathize with the need to vent at the idiocy of some posters, you should always be prepared to take what you dish out. You may think doing it in private will make that unnecessary, but obviously that's not always the case. I for one keep in mind that every time I post something, private board / group or not, it might get out. And I have to take the consequences for it if it does.

But in the meantime, yeah, everybody else who likes to play the whiny victim needs to grow up, too.I know where you're coming from, and I definitely agree that some stuff should just be ignored. But, at the same time, I'll always disagree that people should have to just "ignore it" in those times when they're being belittled or made fun of. And they shouldn't have to be forced to defend themselves either, just so they can post on some message board.
I'll give you that some folks are WAY too touchy... and maybe they're the ones you're really telling to grow up. But there are other times when folks shouldn't have to be expected or required to just "live with it," and pointing out a problem is the first step to fixing it... it's not mere "whining."
At any rate, I'm repeating more than a convenience store burrito, so with that... Stew out.

Hell yeah they did. Victorians were one sexed-up bunch. Check out Christina Rosetti's poem "Goblin Market."
I heart Victorian British culture so hard.

Oh yes. On the subject of Rock Snobbery, an important requirement to join the Black Ledge. Also, a Mensa-worthy IQ, the ability to post without smilies.. (I failed that one)

So, they're pissed off that they were banned from this site, so they go and create their own site where they only let in certain people and can ban whomever they want?
Lame, dudes. Get over it. And go revive AMFM.Well, every community has got a dark underbelly it seems. I mod another big forum (not FM) and in the past it could get very ugly there also. We banned a few people here and there, or prohibited them from posting in certain folders, and they lashed out by opening another forum and only allowing in those 'special people'. They started badmouthing the mods and certain long time members, and spread their 'joy' over to other well-respected forums. For years now it has been us vs. them. Freaks.
I've been reading posts on the Ledge for quite a while, but didn't join in until a couple of months ago. Don't know why really, cause I like coming here. :)

Yeah, what freaks. Amazing that people might be resentful for being banned from a message board.

another side of the story: the password thing was started after the black ledge was trolled continuously by nonbanned ledgies uuh other trolls.
I'm not saying anymore about it. It's history now and I don't think you'll ever change people's views on it. I know I can live with myself though.
Edit. What I do want to say: isn't it funny how most of those blackledgies (I won't name names because no one does, right) these days are regular posters here, some even contributors, some even *gasp* popular. Also, if you do check the black ledge.. posts going back for over a year, but about what? It's just some board where friends chat with each other. Where are all those nasty posts?
So who can move on with life and who is still dwelling in the past? You make your mind up.

Didn't care too much for tasting their own medicine on their own turf, huh?

Right. Instead, your problems were that they were being mean so you had to ban them.

Thing is, as culturally repressive as Britain (and most of Europe, really) was in a lot of ways at that time, 19th century European culture actually gave us nearly all of the social, cultural and political building blocks of the 20th (and even 21st) centuries.
Think of all of the concepts that are still so incredibly prominent and important in our lives today that simply didn't exist before the nineteenth century: evolutionary biology, socialism, capitalism, antisemitism, homosexuality, ideals of womanhood (both "Stay home and cook!" and "Let's work and vote!"), nationalism, imperialism, the rift between high art and popular art... The list just goes on and on.

Oh, gosh...I would never participate on an unmoderated message board. :distress:
on one from about 1997-2000 over at mygnr.com, but then I was made moderator (Wasnt bad, this place is EXTREMELY more tame in comparison), grew bored after a year or so and just resigned totally from the website/message board.
I do like the newer style message board over at mygnr.com over the old style board which is similar to the "Black Ledge".
I started to lurk here around 2000 and joined in June 2001...Been consistently here ever since (Though I dont feel I have anything in common with most typical FM fans outside the band's music.)

There was a HUGE cultural divide between Europe and America. We may have owed SOME of our cultural roots to Europe/Britain, but we (IMO) improved upon them. Many of the strides for Women and Minorities are homegrown. And, btw: The "ideal of womanhood" became popular thru Eleanor of Aquitaine, as did the whole flowering of Chivalry. Women's vote was a 20th century thing. I think I prefer the 20th Century actually......

Maybe their lives can't be summed up by an action on the internet though.
The Burnish site had a major seperation and they turned to their own board. It doesn't sound entirely the same but I still don't see how people became "freaks" for wanting to continue to talk online. It seems common practice for some fully accepted into an online community to imply that others who do not fit in and possibly have a personal response to that, are taking it way too seriously, have far too much time on their hands and are generally pathetic. I don't see how the same cannot be applied to those who are fully accepted. It takes just as much time and effort and people often mention their personal response to the community, I can't produce a post this moment but we've all seen the ones proclaiming they enjoy being accepted, yada yada. Yet when someone has a personal response to the opposite, to not being accepted they're made out to be pathetic. I think it's a little too easy to ridicule only when it gets negative and not admit that it's possible we have just as much time on our hands and just as much placed in the whole idea.Believe me, that is not what I meant to say at all. Those people got banned for a reason, I don't just go around banning people for fun, they have to be seriously deranged. And I think talking about killing spouses of their idols and their children just so that they can be with them (or some other person they deemed worthier than said spouses) and actually devoting an entire forum to actually plan an event like that would constitute being deranged. No?
Sorry if I gave off the wrong idea. And it doesn't even matter in the grand scheme of things. So rock on. :)

DANG! That is bad! See, no matter how much people get all pissy about bannings, there are occasions where it is necessary. I realize some folks get a little too trigger happy with bannings and thread deletions, but if such things are not abused by moderators, they do serve a positive purpose. It's a fine line to walk - I run a forum, so I know. I have been fortunate though in that my forum is fairly non-controversial. I believe I have only deleted one thread and banned two people who were scary/mental types, kind of like the above, in the entire time it has been open. Not because I'm so wonderful but just because it hasn't been necessary.

Yeah, what freaks. Amazing that people might be resentful for being banned from a message board.
OTOH, there's always a gray area. If it could have been done, I would have banned Nalbandian and Stan from the Mac newsgroup. Their posts crossed a line of acceptability. Posts on stalking Stevie Nicks (Nalbandian) are downright unacceptable. Those guys got dropped by so many ISPs, it wasn't funny. Now, banning people because they're irritating, like Kyle the Madonna lover, is something I'd disagree with.

I wouldn't bother banning the stalkers -- I figure they might have good stories to tell & besides it adds a certain cachet to your forum if you have criminals on it -- but I would ban the irritating ones (like kyle).

I don't know. Describe your peeps and I'll tell you true.I like frisky, zesty, but focused people who eschew more than an hour's worth of off-topic chat at a time in favor of Fleetwood Mac talk. Also, some of the people can be mean but not all the people.
Also, the people en masse should be a cross-section of humanity, like Katherine Ann Porter's passengers on the "Ship of Fools."

Hmm, this is difficult. The basic difference between my board and the Ledge is the tone. It's pretty soft over there. We don't take things too seriously. We don't talk about pre-BN or post-BN Mac, although I appreciate them, but it IS a BN board. The General Discussion is rather non-controversial and nothing too heavy is discussed. Now me, I sometimes like it hard and I sometimes like it soft, so I post both there and at the Ledge. I'm not sure if it's a cross-section of humanity either... but then again neither is the Ledge... I'd say both the boards contain ships of fools that are largely homogeneous. To be perfectly frank, there is some immaturity on my board. If you can skip over that and still enjoy it, you're OK.
The truth is my board is not for everyone. I have no illusions about that. In fact I was a bit nervous some people might decide to bash my board here because it's been done freely in the past. I could say more about this but I think it's best to leave it alone, as it hasn't been done in quite a while.
AliceLover, the thing about the EZBoard is 1) I can't control it as much and I love me some control 2) Most people don't know about it 3) We had over 1000 members on the other forum and getting them all to switch over is a pain. However, I'm having such a hard time fixing the other one that maybe we will keep EZBoard for a longer time. Some folks think it's no sweat to update the phpBB html code but I'm slower than they are, I guess. I'm paranoid that I will accidentally delete those thousands of posts. Also, I haven't had time. I only turned in my dissertation prospectus Thursday and frankly my poor little brain is still recovering from the heinous stress of that. See, I changed my argument dramatically just two weeks before the deadline, meaning I had to scramble to find brand new theorists and critics. This was difficult because no one had dealt with my new idea that the Renaissance romance genre was not driven by desire (either sexual or material) as is commonly argued, but by fear of the loss of identity.... blahblahblah. Anyway, I won't bore you with the details. Let's just say it's been a rough time and BN.net and its forum has been the last thing on my mind.

Well, for me, I joined in May because I was tired of traveling to all these cities all alone with no one to hang out with. I must admit the reason I didnt join for a long time was because I'd heard of alot of sull**** flying around, and I just dont have time for that. It has been nothing like that since I joined here. I have enjoyed posting very much, and although I'm probably prone to a dumbass statment once in awhile, I try to show respect to everyone. I have made several friends since I joined, and I hope to make more. David.
