I think she meant the guy sticking his foot in his mouth telling me I look tired. However, his heart was in the right place, he just sounded concerned. It wouldn't be as weird if I actually knew this guy. He's one of our catering guys who I have never actually talked to. What an icebreaker, eh?

I tend to always be tired, and always have dark circles/bags under my eyes. (I have sleep apnea, but don't use my machine like I should, because I have more trouble sleeping with the mask on than without.) You'd be amazed how many people make similar comments to me. Sometimes, they even precede it with "You look awful." Some people just have no common sense.

I get that a lot too because I pretty much always have dark circles under my eyes-it's hereditary. I think the only people someone should say stuff like that to is maybe a spouse, family member, etc. You should NEVER tell a freaking co-worker or client, "You look tired". That's crazy. I'm sure even in your tired state, you look lovely. :)

And for the love of God, no one should ever ask a woman when her baby is due, etc. That could be such a disaster, especially if they just had the baby, or whatever. I'm still of the belief that unless you have something nice to say to someone, you should keep your mouth shut. You know what else kills me? When someone looks at you and says, "SMILE!" Like you're supposed to walk around with a grin on your face for no reason. Gah, people should really just shush.

My eyes do have dark circles. Also, I spent 40 minutes smoothing out my hair this morning but its the tiredness that gets the attention.

That pregnant question is a quagmire. I used to work with a woman who was very thin but she had a little bump in her lower abdomen. Well, it wasn't so little and she would get asked that all the time! I had a friend ask someone once who wasn't pregnant. My friend was mortified. She told me never to ask anyone that. Not that I ever would!

Coworkers have said this to me, when I am not wearing eye makeup. It so rarely sounds like the person has concern - more like Diss said, a way of saying you look like ****.

The only time that comment would be alright with me is if it is followed by an offer of:
a day off
some tea
a pillow:nod:

Hey - there's a retort:
"You look tired today."
"I am tired. Could you get me a pillow?"

The other unwelcome comment I have always hated is:
"Smile" it is almost always uttered as a command, and from a stranger. I
don't know any unmedicated people who walk around with smiles on their faces all day:mad:

p.s. I thought your thread was going to be about all of us late-night ledgies.

Yep. I like to think when I am walking, and sometimes what I am thinking makes me smile, and sometimes it makes me frown. I am happy to smile at someone who smiles at me (if they aren't creepy) but I don't think it's like, my reponsibility or something.

Once I got into a yelling match with a teenage hippie on Haight st, 1987. He just picked the wrong day: I was living on $5 a week for food, in a sublet just off the Haight, trying to find a job, and figure out how to stay in SF, oh yes, and my car had just been towed. So, he said, "smile" and I kept walking, and then I swung around, and asked him how many men he had commanded to "smile" that morning. I told him he wasn't being very helpful, and why didn't he tell me something funny if he wanted me to smile.

It kind of shook him out of his happy-go-lucky smoke-a-doob, dance-to-Jerry, hold-a-puppy mode. So, then he called me a Bitch, and he told me I needed to get laid more. (At that point in my life he couldn't have been more wrong, "getting laid" was not the problem) ;^) I really bummed him out. Oh well. [grumble grumble, bah humbug] that'll teach 'em.

I never smiled as a child and one of the lunch ladies used to call me Smiley. It bothered me at first but then I realized she was trying to be warm and it was pretty miraculous anyone noticed me at all.

Yes, my day is better. I finished work at about 4:30 and I ain't done nothin since and am going to bed soon. I watched Igby Goes Down, that poor little bastard. My Mufy is my snuggle bunny because my roommate is away so that is sweet.

I find this heartbreaking. I don't have pleasant memories of the lunchroom in elementary school. It is so easy to be passed over if you are a quiet kid.

It sounds like your day ended well, which is nice. I feel like a chump for throwing in so many anecdotes instead of kindly asking how you were doing, as others did. :sorry: Computer work has caused me to lose some of my social graces.

Maybe people are just scared of my average fast reply to their "You look tired" (Which would be "Of course I am tired...I looked at your face and now when I try to sleep I have the same nightmare that you are chasing me with your oversized grapefruit on a toothpick head of yours.")

Ha. That's what I do. I just cut open the bag, dump the **** into a pan, and shake it on high heat until it's popped. It tastes different to me than making it in the microwave.

Why don't you just pop it on the stove?
I used to do that all the time, and that's what we did when I was growing up. It makes my stove all greasy, and I don't have a big popping pan anymore. I mean, it made things really greasy. I didn't have a top to the pan, so I had to use another pan for the top, and it made the bottom of that pan super greasy. And, believe me, I mean really greasy, or else I would do it. Not least because bags of popcorn are way, way, way cheaper than microwave kind.
So, now I buy microwaveable and walk to the corner.:) I need an air popper, really.
Although I've never tried to put microwave popcorn in a pan, maybe that would generate less grease.
