View Full Version : We need a Stevie song generator
Josh's post in the Christine forum:
For Stevie...
Our Stevie...~
~*~Is in our blood~*~
For she...
She is in~
Our blood~!!!
got me thinking. We've got an obvious crisis on our hands here. We all want Stevie to release a new solo album at some point, but she claims not to have written more than one song in over eighteen months. Now, we can all sit around and cry about not having any new Stevie music, or we can take matters into our own hands!
We need to create our own Stevie song generator!
Now unfortunately, I know nothing about writing computer programs, but if somebody who does wants to help me out on this, it would be greatly appreciated. Here's what we need:
First, we need to compile a list of all the nouns, verbs and adjectives that we want to see in our new Stevie songs. Here are my lists; feel free to add to them:
NOUNS: Stars. Stairs. Gate. Door. Garden. Moon. Love. Heart. Room. Eyes. Song. Angel. Ghost. Everything. Night. Wind. Lady. Woman. Feeling. Universe. Ocean. Poet. Dream. World. Prisoner. Friend. Thing. Crystal. Boots. Wing. Storm. Child. Sister. Gypsy. Queen. Candle. Shadow. Feeling. Freedom. Sea. Mother. Father. Destiny. Day. Mirror. Window. Hand. Light. Something. Castle. Home. Girl. Escape. (Plus the names of various colors, fabrics, birds, precious stones, flowers and seasons.)
VERBS: Love. See. Think. Run. Go. Turn. Leave. Laugh. Shine. Touch. Lose. Have. Take. Promise. Say. Try. Give. Be. Become. Seem. Stay. Tell. Change. Sing. Call. Dream. Haunt. Believe. Stand. Begin. Look. Stare. Walk. Grow. Wonder. Wish. Miss. Sleep. Show. Dance. Stop. Have. Do. (Plus all modal verbs, of course.)
ADJECTIVES: Pretty. Older. Calm. Deadly. Bright. Wrong. Alone. Softest. Frozen. Dark. Good. Wild. (That's all I can come up. Stevie's not really much for adjectives. Again, colors and fabrics can be included here.)
MISCELLANEOUS WORDS AND PHRASES: Well. He says. She says. In love. Baby. Very. Just like. Down. Deep inside. All the way. Real. Honey. Anymore. Right. Still. Ooh.
Okay, so now that we've got our nouns, verbs and adjectives, they just need to be inserted into various grammatical structures, mostly simple declarative statements, but with special emphasis on questions and free-standing prepositional phrases and subordinating conjunctions. Surely there must be a way to create a fairly simple computer program that will do this.
So let's hop to it, people! We'll have this album written in no time!
EDIT: Okay, I'm going to start adding people's suggestions to my original post as they come up. Even if we can't write a computer program, with enough words, we should be able to suss out these songs ourselves.

you need to add "stand" or "standing" or "stood" to your list of verbs.

and you need to add "well" to the beginning of several random lines, and also in the lines themselves

All right, well I was hoping more people would reply with suggestions by now, but I think we've got a pretty good pool of words, so let's try it out, shall we? Everybody write a song using the words and phrases we've come up with, and we'll pick out the best twelve and mail them to Stevie so she can get working on a new album.
Here's my song, it's called "Gypsy Sister":
Well he says "Think about the stars, gypsy sister"
And she says "Promise me you'll give me everything,
I am a sapphire ocean lady... I am a deadly blue green storm
And my shadow haunts the prison of your soul... it is a frozen thing"
Well he turns to leave... well she says "Baby, don't you run out that door"
And he sees her crystal boots shine in the room like never before
He says "Well baby... you are my wild dream poet
You are just like the softest angel ghost I've ever known"
She says "Well you are not my friend now baby
And I feel this universe is not my own"
"Well baby" he says "Baby baby... well you will never be alone
Do it baby for the world, even if this freedom is not your own"
Well and he turns and well he leaves
And she says "Baby you were very very good...
Very good, you, baby, were
But my bright heart is also very very good..."
Well the gypsy she got older... until she became part of the wind
She was a wing child of the moon now baby... but she will never... love... again...

"white", "black", "web", "spider"... oh I could go on and on.

Stevie Nicks 'The Legend of Humpty Dumpty'
It's not home
And it's not Paradise Valley
It's a castle wall, somewhere,
Somewhere, you were dancing through the mist (Humpty)
It's a real long way to fall, she said
Down from the castle wall, baby
Show me the way back, honey
All the King's horses, baby
Baby, baby, baby,
Could not put you back together again
You fell all the way back down baby
All the way back down, baby.
I still looked up
When you hobbled in the room, said she
As she walked down the long hallway
Something broke the egg...into pieces
Keep that Humpty deep inside you
And wish it to mend
Oh, you wish it to mend...wish it to mend
That is so lame, sorry, but I wanted to try.:o I know she sometimes writes about fairytale/nursery rhyme characters...
Maybe I'll try again later

"Run From You (The Escape)"
Stop for a moment
Think for a minute
She isn’t your girl
Well, she was never your girl
In the still of the night
Well, the fog rolls in
She’ll escape from you
Running through the night
And now you’re alone
So alone, baby
And you dream of the girl
Escaping from you
Run to her, baby
You’ll run right through her
Well, she doesn’t feel you
Well, nothing anymore
And you’ll hear her laugh
And you’ll hear her sing
Well, she will haunt your nights
Well, there is no escape
And she will haunt your days
And you will not escape
The sound of her voice
The cry of her song
Run to her, baby
You’ll run right through her
Well, she doesn’t feel you
Well, nothing anymore
(breakdown)
Well, run to her
Run to her now
She doesn’t feel you
She doesn’t want to see you
You will not escape
No, you will not escape
You cannot run from her now
Not now
Not now
"Run From You (The Escape)"
Brilliant! Extra bonus points for a parenthetical subtitle!
But still, that's only two other people who've contributed their talents. Three songs isn't enough for an EP. Come on, people, let's get cracking! I've already given you a list of all the words you need to use, you just have to string them together grammatically. I'm going to write one more, but everybody else needs to start carrying their weight or we're never going to see this album recorded.

"Has Anyone Ever Told You Baby"
Has anyone ever told you, baby
You have the deepest blue eyes?
Has anyone ever told you baby
Your eyes are like the sea?
Has anyone ever told you darling
There is a storm behind the calm?
Ooooo, I will ride your storm
Well, I will tame it and make it calm
Well, with the touch of my hand
I will make your storm my own
And the rain comes down
And the wind rises
You cannot loose me
Through the vivid flashes of light
Through the rising brilliant colors
You cannot loose me
Baby though you try
Ooooo, I will ride your storm
I will tame it and make it my own
I will hold on to you tight
And I will give you my peace
Take my calm baby
Calm your vivid flashes of light
And the rolling thunder
Well, I am rolling with you
Well, I am rolling with you
I am rolling with you baby
Baby I am rolling with you
Just like the thunder
Rolling with you
It was just like me
Rolling with you
To the sea...
-------------------------------------
I give up...  :]
Okay, here's my second contribution, called "Angel of the Night":
Alone in her castle... the angel of the night sings...
She says "Ooh you were my everything, you were my crystal dreams
You were my brightest candle... but your light went out...
And now nothing shines... and nothing is as it seems
[chorus]
Ooh well she is the angel of the night
Uh huh and all she wants to do is what is right
Oh but she has given up the fight
Well and when she is alone... there can be... no light... baby...
Well now she is a prisoner of her heart
In her velvet room... looking into her mirror she sees his eyes
Well they are blue baby... and they are bright and they are grey...
She wishes she could laugh again... it comes as no surprise
Ooh she is the queen of her darkness
She is a woman of the wind...
She is the white dove in the storm...
Well she is just like me... baby
[chorus]
Ooh well he is there on the other side of the world
And he has his freedom... but he says "My freedom... isn't free...
Without her I cannot feel... I cannot wonder...
Ooh well baby you know sometimes I wonder... if she thinks about me"
Yeah he is the shadow of a poet
He is a child of the sea, baby
Ooh and he is the ghost... of something...
Well and you know she is his destiny
[chorus]
And so he comes back... across the sea... to her castle
And he is frozen by the moonlight... until he runs up the stairs
Well and he promises to stay with her baby... as he goes through her emerald door
But the dove... his love has flown away... she has escaped... she is not there...
[chorus]
[chorus]
"Oh, you've got green eyes
Oh, you've got blue eyes
Oh, you've got grey eyes
And I've never seen anyone quite like you before"
I think I know where you got your inspiration from

OK here's my contribution:
"The Land of OZ"
Well, I have been down under
alone...in the land of OZ.
Running from fear...so fast...no time to pause.
Searching my soul...lost... in the outback.
Searching baby, and I ain't comin' back
(Chorus) Wellllll, I'm a cowgirl
I'm a cowgirl
Baby, I'm a cowgirl now
Your love has calmed me
But I can't love you somehow.
I don't want the darkness, only the light.
I'm over the rainbow, I can't will stay and fight
Just leave me alone in this space called OZ
I just need the abandon...I don't need any cause
The scarecrow, the lion, the tinman too
Baby, they hold all the answers
They are there..for someone like you.
Chorus
Well, I'm not a witch and I'm not your fool
But your eyes,so young, baby they tell me it's true
Some day when the sun is down...low in the sky
You'll think of me baby and then you'll cry
Yeah baby... you're gonna CRYYYYYYYYyyyyy....
Chorus
Chorus and fade
I hope this makes the album..if not not I wiil be pissed for the rest of my life...

Highwayman's song is great.
Snowman's song is also brilliant - it practically sung itself. Seriously, I was humming along while I was reading - the phrasing was so clear...

Shadow Angel
In the deepest gleam of the night
Ooh the velvet glow of your light
The darkest dawn of your dream
Well the angel is not what she seems
She's a shadow angel
Following you
Well, the phantom angel
With some roses for you
Into your kingdom she flies
On the wings of the night
She reflects in your eyes
oooh she a shadow angel
From the desert or hills
Well the wind and the chills
And the rain and the sun and the moon
Ooh the candles burn bright
While our girl is in flight
If you do not believe you're a fool
She's a shadow angel
Following you
Well, the sapphire angel
Fragrant flowers for you
Into your kingdom she flies

The funny thing is, it really took me about 10 minutes to write that.
If I were at home I would pull out my guitar and play an A minor chord, a C, and an F and strum around a bit.
Maybe do a suspended 7th thingie for the bridge, and it would be be a real song.
The funny thing is, it really took me about 10 minutes to write that.
A triumph! "Shadow Angel" and "Angel of the Night" have to be back to back on the album.
We're really getting somewhere now. Somebody get Rick Nowels and Mike Campbell on the phone, tell them we need some music for these babies.
Mine took about ten minutes each too. It's surprisingly easy once you've got your vocabulary list all worked out!

There is actually a song called Angel of Night on a Grace Slick solo album from 1981 titled appropriately enough, "Dreams". :woohoo:
Now that I think about it, that whole record looks like a Stevie parody.

I haven't written anything using the Stevie Song Generator, but if I found one of the old songs I tried to write when I was 15, it would probably have about 75% of the words from Jyqmbo's list! :o

I was just thinking the same thing. I think I had something called "Luna" you know, like the moon?
I was 16.
"..Luna is the shadow, and she is the light"
My voice teacher recorded it on a 6 track, so somewhere there is a reel to reel of it in all of its hideousness. Scary!

Ocean Eyes
Moon shines on velvet
Fall into the spell
Oooo the spell... that was the dream
In the dark of the light she says... "excalibur"
Well, excalibur baby!
You run in the wind
Ocean eyes shine through the fog
Like sapphires glittering...
Follow that northern star above you
Try... deep inside
But you can't run a-way
That dream haunts you baby
At night in your haunted room
Well did you ever believe... when spring turns to fall
Your golden girl would need you now
That girl from long ago, waitress
Strange and elusive
You take her hand now
Well, it's an older hand
Than you used to hold onto
Well, you say you know that now
She is your mirror now
Your golden dream ... times two
Papa says... Well you can't run from this baby!
No, there are no winners in this game
And the child in my heart calls out again
Crying in the night...
You know this is an older hand
She reaches out to you...
Oooh and says there never was an ending

Something in the rain just cried last night, and I prefer to kick it.
Stand back, stand back. In the middle of the room, I did not see your blue denim. Lousy seamstresses, pick their chiffon but they never make it flattering - no they don't make it, make it!
Did it make you cry, make you break down, shatter your illusion of clothes. Is it ovah now, do you know how, to pickuptheshawl and go home. Well, I Saw There Was
There was a light
There was a shadow
There was a mountain
There was a dream
I saw a flash
I saw a gypsy
I saw a fountain
I saw a gleam
And no one ever told the lady
The river was so deep and wide
The evening mist was so dense baby
I never saw you leave my side
Wellllll, the visions lied when they told me
Oooh, it seems the ghosts have gone and sold me
Ohhh, and the dagger cut me deeply
Yeeeeah, all of the roses smelled so sweetly
There was a corset
There was some lace
There was some velvet
around my face
I saw a seamstress
I saw a child
I saw a river
That ran so wild
And no one ever told me baby
The silhouette before me would grow
Scarlett was an obstinate lady
Behind her eyes the feelings don't show
Wellllll, the visions cracked inside the crystal
Oooooh, the fabric snagged on thorns and thistles
Ohhhhh, stilletos made my feet sore
Soooo, I got some reeblechs from the shoe store

You're her secret lyricist, aren't you?
But tell me this - what was the tune you were imagining here?
It also occurs to me that though it is possible to have a STevie lyrics generator, it doesn't mean that her lyrics are less meaningful. To me. Sure, she uses those phrases over and over - but they are good phrases, universally emotionally evocative, and the important part is the vocal she lays down for them. Poeple can criticize her lyrics till the cows come home (cows? WTF?) and I may agree, but as a vocalist and melody maker, she is unparallelled. Or however you spell that. Stevie's cliched, nature-filled-words speak to me, but if they didn't, and sometimes I don't know what she is saying anyways - I would still love her for her vocal. Stevie is an okay songwriter, sometimes brill, sometimes lame - but as a vocalist/melodymaker she is unparallelled. I love her for her vocals, they are inimitable and brilliant. Sometimes her word are brill, but nearly always her vocals are. I know it may be easy to make fun of her words, but with vocals like she does, I can't help but to think of her in a positive light. As the saying goes, "she could sing the phone book..."
There really is no one who could do what she has done, vocally. She defies logic. Also, it seems like someone could do what she has done lyrically, but they haven't, have they? Simple or cheesy as it may seem, no one else has done it, and it really is very deep.
On that note, that was a brill parody, Sparkles. I would sing that. Even though it was the ghost of the past that I lived in. Lol.

A while back, I set out to write a song like Christine for a companion thread to this one (I thought better of posting it in the Christine Forum!). Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, then a third verse that combined parts of Verses 1 & 2, and then lots and lots of repeats of the chorus. It had lyrics about love and wanting to be with this guy, and I threw in an "I'm the lonely one/you're the only one" couplet for good measure.
It was kind of cool actually... I need to figure out where I put it.

Um, yeah. Have you met me?
Actually, I haven't !
This is what I have always said about La Thing.
I've always simultaneously laughed at her and been a huge supporter. I swear I've said what I just said millions of times. Spark, you should really pay more attention to what I say.
I'm normal, in that I love Stevie, and think she's the most brill, but I also like to laugh at her. I am a warrior on the DOSB, but I'm also a critic. I laugh at her lyrics frequently, it's a great joy of mine - really. I just discovered a demo of hers that I love mainly b/c it is simple and cool and I relate to the lyrics - but also because it has lyrics that I laugh at. ("ooooweee. Listen to me. My secret love secretly died")
That is really a great joy of mine, to laugh at what Stevie says. It doesn't diminish my enjoyment, but often adds to it. I'm always like "of course she is going to sing great, but what the fricking stupid **** will she say next? or, "what the brilliant thing will she say next?"
Stevie is always like a fun suprise. She may say something totally lame ("and her face, becomes thin!") but with a brill vocal attached. And vice versa.
So, in short, I can be a chearleader and a maker funner of Stevie. She's done so many brillliant vocals that I love her, she has enough brillliant words that I love her, and she has enough crappy lyrics that I think she is hilarious. Mostly I care about her voice, which is easy, b/c her voice truly is brilliant. I've always laughed at her words, but it has always been with the knowlege that her voice is the eighth wonder of the world. Not every single time always, but ultimately, for sure.
And I love a lot of great vocals, but for me, her voice is the strangest and most beautiful. No one could do that no matter how long or hard they tried. Stevie's voice is a whole 'nother universe. And when it is bad it is good, but when it's good...it is very, very good. Utterly sublime. I often compare her to Ann Wilson, and Grace Slick, and Debbie H., and a few others, just to see how I really feel. I always think, my god, these ladies' voices are perfection. Just magnificent. Or, their writing is beyond (Deborah H.'s lyrics always amaze me).
But I always come back to thinking that Stevie is the true vocal genius. Obviously, Ann is a flawless, passionate singer. Obviously, Debbie is a lyricist bar none. And obviously, Ann is a great lyricist, and Deb is a great singer.
And then, obviously S. is the most original blend of those two things. Neither quality is technically perfect, but the result is mindbending. She is weird vocally and lyrically. Especially vocally. I mean, what the heck is she doing with that thing? (her voice). That is the point, people who are more perfect could never have done what she did. She's so free with her voice, and lyrics. And in being free to be less than perfect, she has come to be something totally unique. Not bad unique, but beautiful unique. Unique in the "Once in a million years" sense. She is strange, and flawed, and brilliant, and normal, and inconsistent yet consistent all at once, and I love all of that. Her flaws make me groan and laugh, her normalcy is comforting, her strangeness is familiar and not threatening, and her brilliance is both beyond my comprehension yet contains all the aforementioned qualities that I mentioned, and understand.
In my head, magno-brilliance and mediocrity and inconsistency go hand in hand. The world works on balance, so if someone is bizarro enough to go all the way to brilliantly electric, I expect them to sometime have to touch on mediocrity.
Blah, blah, blah. In short, I think Stevie is both brilliant and lame, which is what i've always thought and said.
She is the dark and light of the (music) universe, wrapped into one person. And I'll be damned if I can't wait to see what she will do next. Will I hear of some new very crappy demo? Or will I hear some great demo that should've been a song? Will I hear some way crappy show from 89, or will it be a great one that happened the next week? Will the TUSK tour rendition of Angel be transcendant, or will it be somewhat embarrassing? Who knows? Every new time is something different! It all could be crappy, or could be really good, just stay tuned!
Mwahahahahahaha! You just never know!
I love that quality of unpredictability coupled with random genius and random mediocrity.
I could spend a lifetime with her and always be suprised and delighted or dismayed. But importantly, never be bored. Oh, that crazy girl! She reminds me of when I laugh maniacillay at "nothing". Everything she does is so joyfully, perfectly, brilliantly, intangible.
She's the mad scientist of her world.
I was just curious.

Ohhhhh, stilletos made my feet sore
Soooo, I got some reeblechs from the shoe store
Howzabout this???
Dream mama, sing to me now
Don't give no nothing to bring me down
Looking out my window a vision I could see
Castle walls coming close to me
The evening storms cloud around the tower
The moon rises to strike the midnight hour
Just like Rapunzel you let down your hair
To reveal to me what I knew was always there
The drawbridge key opened up to see
The forest was now a part of me
Oh, mama, I can see in the crystal ball
Your dusky shadow drifting down the hall
Your moon ring's a-changing to the deepest shade of black
And I knew at that moment, I knew you wouldn't be back
I could see the moat was frozen
As the night grew slowly colder
My life came crashing down
In a booming bolt of thunder
{guitar solo}
Your moon ring's a-changing to the deepest shade of black
And I knew at that moment, I knew you wouldn't be back
I could see the moat was frozen
As the night grew slowly colder
My life came crashing down
In a booming bolt of thunder
Thrown aside.... was a bass drum tambo
And a rose..

Towie... your song reminds me of Heart, circa 'Dreamboat Annie' or "Dog & Butterfly."

Well, I Saw There Was  I read this earlier today. I think it is  I especially like that you didn't write it based on any particular song/sound.

This is hella funny. My favorite parts...
The title !!!!
The fabric line is excellent- especially the rhyming of thistles with crystal
And the last line made me literally laugh out loud (I needed that by the way)

Yall I was just searching though some old threads and came accross this one. I think those of you who wrote poems, they are fantastic..... Really they are, and on of them in particulat, The Escape, hits my life so hard now........
As you know, I am very much into music and I was wondering if I could like use your all's lyrics (giving you credit of course) and write songs to them and maybe use them If I get in a band. They lyrics are just so unbelieveably amazing that I feel like I could make beautiful Steviefied music with them....
Seriously though, they are fabulous. I am printing them out right now so that I can just have them to read and play the piano to them....
Amazing Work YOu all,
Ethan

Mine were all meant as a joke and cooked up in no more than five minutes.
And no, you can't use them.

I think they all are a joke. Funny ones, at that.

A broken rag doll
Stood in a line
During the windy storm
"Where are you?" he said
"Well I dunno" said she....
That doll
a gypsy in her mind
Was used to Hollywood living
Just like Garbo
Oh doll
Oh baby, Garbo doll
Where are you?
I hear you crying...
.....in the morning
at nightfall.....
I am near you....wrapped around your dreams
crystal threads of blue grey eyes...
....I remember them still....
So, now I say goodbye
...to that doll....
because after all these years
when she sees that doll at the fair
she will dance
....with glitter fading
just like a nightbird....
