Wisteria Lane is suddenly in need of a new cellar dweller.

Page Kennedy, who played the shadowy Caleb, aka the Guy in Betty's Basement, was evicted from Desperate Housewives, ABC confirmed Tuesday.

Show spokeswoman Janet Daily said the role would be recast after Kennedy was terminated for "improper conduct." There were no details released on the nature of said misconduct, but Daily said the action was taken following a "thorough investigation" by producers at Disney's Touchstone Television.

Citing an anonymous source, the Associated Press reports Kennedy's alleged transgression did not involve another cast member.

There was no immediate comment from Kennedy (who, in an AP interview, referred to his Housewives gig as a chance of "making a name for myself") or his agent.

The 28-year-old actor joined the cast this season and has only briefly been seen as the captive locked up by neighborhood newcomer Betty Applewhite (Alfre Woodard). Caleb's story line has become central to this season's goings-on. Although it was initially hinted that Caleb was Betty's husband, the Oct. 23 episode suggested Caleb might be Betty's offspring. A conversation between Betty and son Matthew (Mehcad Brooks) indicated that Caleb is a fugitive from justice for the murder of a teenage girl in Chicago; it also appears Caleb has some kind of developmental disability.

Kennedy's final appearance will be on this Sunday's episode. Previews show his character escaping from his basement chains and running wild through Wisteria Lane.

Before joining Housewives, Kennedy had small roles on Six Feet Under (as a football player cum corpse) and in the movie version of S.W.A.T. (as one of the bad guys). He said he turned down roles on Showtime's Barber Shop, WB's upcoming Rebecca Romijn series, Pepper Dennis, and UPN's Love, Inc. so he could commit to Housewives.

He will also appear in the Usher film In the Mix, which opens Nov. 23--Kennedy's 29th birthday.

While he might not make a suitable sub for Caleb, Elton John has shamelessly been campaigning for a role on Housewives. The popster, who cast show star Teri Hatcher in his new video, tells Extra that Housewives is one of his fave shows ("it's so bitchy and funny!") and he'd love to put in some face time.

Then again, Elton-as-Caleb could shake things up for the show, which has been losing viewers and critical goodwill in its second season. Backlash aside, Housewives is still the second-most watched show on TV behind CSI, averaging nearly 25 million viewers a week.

Her shrieking hysterics Sunday night were improper enough. Fire that woman. You can her freaking blue veins popping out all over her body; she's a walking AAA roadmap. Or at least throw a pork chop or two in her general direction.

Did you ever see the crossover episode of Ally McBeal where the Lara Flynn Boyle character from The Practice and Ally run into each other on an elevator? This was when all the anorexia rumors surrounded the two. Lara says something like "Maybe you can eat a cookie" to Ally, who responds "Maybe we can share one". :p

YES!!!

Those used to be two of my favorite shows. The Practice on Sunday nights and Ally on Monday nights after Melrose.

Yep, same here! I gave up The Practice and Ally McBeal (as well as Melrose) before they ended, though, because like most David E. Kelly shows, they turned to crap. The guy needs to stick with one show at a time. Whenever he has more than one show on the air, he tends to put his energy into one, and neglect the rest. But those were great shows for a while!

I had a huge crush on Dylan McDermott, even before The Practice came on the air. (I have a thing for dark hair and blue eyes... Dylan, Patrick, Lindsey!) So I was so excited when that show came on the air, especially when it turned out to be good. Dylan was so hot for the first couple seasons of that show. Unfortunately, his character became way to whiney and annoying to watch.

K - that episode last Sunday was nearly unwatchable (sorry, just catching up on my shows). Teri Hatcher is horrendous - just painful to watch. And, I don't know, man. The whole thing is just getting really tired. I loved last season; I'm finding I couldn't care less about it this year. Anyone else? Very disappointing. :(

dumbasses... instead they should have sacked each and every writer who's involved in writing the second season. i have NEVER seen a series so good deteriorating so rapidly.
due to my hopeless sentimentality i'm giving both desperate housewives and the oc 3 more episodes each till i quit watching them.

Yup. I'm with you. Three more episodes sounds fair. If it weren't for the fact that my VCR is automatically programmed to tape DH every Sunday night, I would have stopped watching weeks ago.

West Wing, on the other hand... SO good this season!! It has had a huge comeback in the writing and cleverness. I hope it doesn't get cancelled at the end of this season. I fear it's being relegated to a little known timeslot Sunday night may mean its certain demise.

Critics think the same, they bashed this new season. Apparently the creator Marc Cherry is too busy writing the bible for his new series Kill/Switch.

Ah. I didn't know that. But it doesn't surprise me to hear it's being bashed. Too bad - lots of talent there. Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman are brilliant. But the stories this season are so tired. Been there. Done that.

If Susan's ex-husband was doing that or Carlos' lawyer, I'd say go ahead.

It seems like almost every series that becomes a breakout hit in its first season, suffers a bit of a sophomore slump and quite a bit of backlash.

This season of 'DH' definitely isn't on par with last year, but I'm hoping they're building towards something great. At the moment though, it has a vibe of treading water.

If Susan's ex-husband was doing that or Carlos' lawyer, I'd say go ahead.Mmm... Richard Burgi and Adrian Pasdar.... *drools*

Flash away, fellas!

Why is that the low-rated shows are consistently fantastic, while the bigger hits just suck as time goes by?

Don't forget Doug Savant, Lynette's husband. I saw absolutely nothing in him when he was on Melrose, but he's hot now.
