In another thread, someone requested a complete show from Christine's solo tour in 1984. I have a complete show. Since I have dial-up, I'll be posting just a few tracks every day until the entire show is posted.

Track #1 is Say You Love Me.

Track #2 is Love Will Show Us How.

I have an original VHS copy of the Video Album & the laser disc documentary & concert transferred to VHS. I have the radio broadcast from Westwood One. It was called "An Evening With Christine McVie". I'd grade the radio broadcast an A-. The volume is just a tad low. Don't you have the radio broadcast of the Reseda show?

It was interesting to see many of the attendees at Universal dressed up a bit more than the usual for rock concerts. There were actually fur coats in the crowd, as if we were seeing Tony Bennett or somebody.

There was an innate sadness to these shows, Mary Anne, which I'm sure you felt too, for this was the last time any of us ever saw Christine run her warm hands over a CP-30. Little did we know then that the encroachment of the Microchip Age would poison Christine's purview & disrupt her mettle.

I have to be honest, I'm not loving "Just Crazy Love" or "Spare Me A Little." They both seem a bit generic here, but then I get the same vibe from "Remember Me" from Roxy. JCL just doesn't have enough piano, SMAL just isn't the same without the little jam at the end, and I have to say Todd's solos seem a little generic on both. Now, SYLM is pretty good.

The SMALs from the 1984 tour are some of my favorite arrangements of it -- with all those glorious backup vocals by George Hawkins. Yes, it's a different approach from that of the Mac a decade before, but what all & hoosits & whatsits & yeowza extra-cheese please on a kaiser roll.

I'll grant you that George Hawkins' backing vocals were pretty killer. I like that he sang the "Bare Trees" arrangement, but only much, much better.

I liked it until I heard these songs, and then it hit me that here are three songs that sounded very different on record in the '70s, but really far too similar live, especially in terms of the all-too-important guitar solo, in the '80s. The personality of the individual songs, when heard together, isn't there.
Sidebar: The Roxy '81 film is the only footage I know of Chris playing a real Rhodes. Can you think of any other?
This (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=2901&d=1102547751) looks like a Rhodes, but I don't know if it's a Fender, a copy, or if I need to get my eyes checked again.

See that inset groove along the top? That's the tip-off.

www.soundcrew.co.jp/japan/equipment/key/e_piano/wurlitzer/img/kp022.jpg

The only reason she's playing the Rhodes on GDW at the Bob Welch show is that it's the keyboardist's setup -- David Edelstein, is it?

Thanks so much for these MACFAN 57! Offering us these precious recordings took a lot of time out from your day...But hearing some of these tunes again from that time period (the material from her then recent album sounds best) was rewarding!

Incidentally, I think Chris's voice sounded fresher and more youthful during The Dance and on In the Meantime than it did in 1985...Any thoughts anyone?

yes, i think the tapes here are dragging her voice flat a little... however, she sounded great on the dance (better than stevie and lb imo) and In the Meantime sounds amazing vocally

I agree. I think her voice sounded the best ever on In The Meantime. And, live she sounded the best on the Dance tour. I think her voice sounded best on a Fleetwood Mac studio album on Tango In The Night. It's very unusual for a singer to improve with age, but Christine has done just that.

I agree. I think her voice sounded the best ever on In The Meantime. And, live she sounded the best on the Dance tour. I think her voice sounded best on a Fleetwood Mac studio album on Tango In The Night. Her vocal work on "In the Meantime" is extraordinary because it's not only pliable & tone-sensitive but also quite experimental: she tries some new things with her lower register as well as with sound-sense phenomena as they pertain to emphasis & enunciation.

She has sung so uniquely & beautifully on so many Mac tracks in the studio that I'm not sure I could extrapolate from that history a particular album on which she sang the best. Certainly she was at the top of her game on the Mac reunion tour. Listen, again, to "You Make Loving Fun" on that album, & you will hear a vocal spot-on perfection that is actually the musical highlight of the album.

aleuzzi
11-14-2005, 11:27 PM
I agree with MacFan57 that she improved with age (perhpas like vintage wine?). But she also sounded bloody terrific from 1973-76: the bootlegs attest to the fact that, in that period, she was at the top of her game.

I think endless touring, drinking, smoking, and cocaine through the latter half of the 70s probably took its toll on her voice, especially on the Tusk and Mirage tours, but once she stepped away from that hectic lifestyle, she steadily regained her strength and voice. Her vocals on the Tango video, for example, are probably the only reason to watch that show. And I remember being shocked at how good she sounded on Time. I'd honeslty dreaded that she'd lost her voice by that point. Boy was I gloriously wrong!
