yay! she's where my mom got the spelling for my middle name (my grandpa's name is Lee, but Vivien Leigh's spelling was much more appealing to my southern family- even though she's not even american)

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7417/leighsmall5nu.jpgThese are the Vivien Leigh films I have seen:

Sidewalks of London (1938)
Gone With the Wind (1939)
Waterloo Bridge (1940)
Ship of Fools (1965)

I also have an old biography of her by Anne Edwards. I like Vivien because she had a passion in life, which was the theatre. I bet she could have made a boatload more money by doing more films, but she devoted herself to plays instead. In 1957, the House of Lords was was debating the issue of whether to demolish the 122 year-old St. James Theatre. Vivien went marching down the street ringing a handbell and protesting the imminent demolition. Then she went into the visitor's gallery at the House of Lords and started shouting at the lordships in protest. She was forcibly removed from the building.

I also like her as a tragic figure. She was manic-depressive in an era that did not understand mental illness. She was a victim of her own manic behavior, and the best thing to do about it at the time was electroshock therapy.

What I want to get next is the cast recording of Tovarich, which was the 1963 musical that she won a Tony award for.

does anyone else laugh when bonnie falls off the pony? not because she fell, but because they used an obvious dummy that just like, flopped off of the pony like a rag doll... lol

yeah, but it's incredibly sad right after that, so I feel a bit ashamed...and the first time I was horrified, because you knew something bad would happen right then...

OMG! Jessica, you are psychic. Daniel's had the flu all week, so he's been going through my DVD collection and finally decided that, at 41, he should see Gone With The Wind! (I know...I know...)
ANYWAY, he said the exact same thing...that it was SUCH a dummy being flung from the horse!

Cool about how your mom got the spelling, too!

Vivian was such a tortured soul in real life, but a magnificent actress. And could there ever be a more gorgeous woman???

If I was a boy, my name would have been Rhett... I'm not kidding.
I think my mom was a bit of a fan.

I have to admit I didnt know she was still alive. She must be one of the oldest living stars now? Happy Birthday though!!She's dead, David. She died in '67. It was still her birthday, though!

I have some recordings of Leigh in the 1951 stage production of "Antony & Cleopatra," as well as the recording she & Gielgud made of their 1966 production of Chekhov's "Ivanov."

My mom & dad saw Leigh as Paola in Giradoux/Fry's "Duel of Angels" at the Alcazar Theater in San Francisco in 1960. They recall the entire theater (a small one) smelling of lilac & the two women on the stage -- Vivien Leigh & Claire Bloom, both dressed in Balmain gowns -- being the acme of elegance, wowing even the grungy teens in the audience.

I'm sorry. I shouldve known better...

I would love a separate pic of her in that red dress from GWTW - when she's all scandalous, but Rhett makes her go to the party anyway - I've rarely seen such a stunning vision as that. It takes my breath away.
So, if anyone comes across that...
