Given the amount of time she's been forced to spend in the company of horse's asses, it's kind of surprising that Stevie Nicks would willingly plant herself amidst a veritable sea of them yet again. That's exactly what the on-again/off-again Fleetwood Mac singer did this past weekend, however, by taking a break from her Antipodean tour to present a trophy to the winner of the Stevie Nicks Plate -- a stakes race for fillies and mares that was held at Flemington Race Course in Melbourne, Australia. We're assuming that Nicks wasn't allowed to belt out her rendition of the country's national anthem, since the sound of a goat has been known to spook our equine brethren now and again . . .

I thought the remark in this Rolling Stone item was crass, pointless & not the least bit funny.

Sure, the goat thing was used in "South Park" (& it didn't start there because the goat=Stevie connection goes waaaay back) but it was part of a routine: embedded in a story with clever writing & quips, part of an image that the South Park guys developed & built & carried through with animation (a goat with a skirt around it).

But that's very different from just nakedly saying GOAT like that. What's funny about that? It's just name-calling, no different from writing JOAN RIVERS IS A DESSICATED MUMMY in a news item.

It's a funny age we live in: hypersensitive in some regards -- especially with all the PC revisions of old speechways -- but in other ways just as crass & cruel as it ever was. It's a huge paradox that Rolling Stone wouldn't dare print the word "chairman" or the sentence "Everyone stood his ground" (so as not to offend women) -- but would, in effect, call Stevie Nicks a goat.

How odd. Rolling Stone is usually so busy licking anybody's ass who's in a thousand miles radius, it's realy bizarre to see them take pot shots like that for seemingly no reason. Id this some new "edgy" direction they're taking, or did Stevie do something to piss them off?

I can't stand them for other reasons, but that one will do...:nod:I think it's just that most of their writers didn't consider Stevie an important or extremely talented songwriter -- it's not so much hate in my view as it is "We'd rather write about Elvis Costello."

Stevie's never really been esteemed critically by the general mass of rock writers, with a handful of notable exceptions.

Anyway, I'm not offended by the blurb. People have said a lot worse here. Every singer has fans and detractors. This was a little harsh - I'm not sure why that was so necessary. At the very least, I don't think Matt and Trey acively hate Stevie. You can usually tell by their tone if they're going after somebody they really hate. They're much more vicious with folks like Phil Collins and Alec Baldwin. With the Stevie episode, it was just, "Haha, she sounds like a goat, and all the soldiers are excited about the goat!"

I thought it was lame because it was insulting without being funny, and also derivative. You shouldn't randomly insult people if it's not going to be funny, it makes you look like a dull turd, which is what RS is. And, I dunno, the whole thing was overly mean spirited to just be talking about how Stevie was at the cup.
And they couldn't think of anything besides the goat? But they had to say it anyway?
Lame.

I think a "delightfully bitchy" comment has to be funny, original, or insightful to work. This was just childish and pathetically uninspiring, IMO. And if it was about MJ, I'd say the same.

If it were a cleverly crafted zing, then it would be "delightfully bitchy." But, as it is, it was derivative and devoid of any panache.

For many of us, "bitchy" doesn't automatically equate humourous or entertaining. It's not a free pass.
We expect a degree of skill and acuity.
