No hi-tech for Nicks

Claire Sutherland and Nui Te Koha

FLEETWOOD Mac rock chick Stevie Nicks has revealed that she despises, and refuses to join, the computer age.

Nicks, 57, says computer games, text messaging and mobile phones have turned the new generation into social morons.

``I don't have a computer, I don't have a cellphone and I don't have an iPod,'' Nicks tells The Back Room.

``I don't like them.''

Nicks says her 14-year-old niece is a teen caught in a technology trap.

``She is the closest thing I have to a daughter and I hate it when she's slumped over her computer.

``I'll ask her something, and she'll raise her hand: `Excuse me, I'm busy!' I hate that,'' Nicks says.

``That's the moment I want to take the computer, throw it out the window, and slap her.

``And I tell her: `You and your friends have no social skills, you don't know how to talk to anybody because you're always text messaging, you burn your eyes and hump your back playing these stupid computer games.

```Don't you want to stand tall, and be beautiful, and have something to say? You won't if you're slumped over that box!'''
Nicks, who wrote her biggest tunes, including Dreams, on cassette, acknowledges the wonders of the world wide web.
``If this new wave had stayed the information superhighway, I would have been happy.
``Gosh, doesn't life fly by fast enough without wanting to sit in a dark room with a monitor and keyboard? It creeps me out.''
But why doesn't music legend and femme-rock pioneer Stevie Nicks have an iPod?
``I have 300,000 CDs. Believe me, there is plenty of music in my life,'' Nicks answers.
``But I will admit I sunk to doing my last demos on (a computer-generated) 16-track pro-tools. I didn't run it, though, I wouldn't know how,'' Nicks says, laughing.
Nicks performs, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, at Rod Laver Arena on February 18. Tickets go on sale on November 15.
300,000 CD,s huh? :laugh:
See - she's not afraid to "waste" $15 on CDs either! :laugh:
I guess from this article that Stevie is OK with internet use for information purposes, but for anything else it's a waste. This article made me laugh out loud. Can you imagine her standing there with her hands on her hips trying to get Jessica's attention while she's playing on the computer? Too funny.
Thanks so much for posting this article! :nod: I've had a bad morning so far and it made me laugh. :xoxo:
Well, they are using them when they cannot do anything else but saty in bed or walk around on a limited basis :shrug:
Also, my FAV is "That's the moment I want to take the computer, throw it out the window, and slap her. " ATTA GIRL :laugh:
I also totally agree with this: "And I tell her: You and your friends have no social skills, you don't know how to talk to anybody because you're always text messaging, you burn your eyes and hump your back playing these stupid computer games." I HATE it when the youngin's talk non stop on their cells while at dinner, etc. I mean why go to dinner with someone just to talk on the phone with somone else. That is just so insulting.
I feel old :laugh:
I think her only objection to iPods was that she just doesn't need one as she has so many CDs. That was my justification too, until I moved and couldn't take my CDs with me.
(I just realized today, somehow in the process of ripping all my hundreds of CDs, I skippsed TOSOTM. Blast.)
I was thinking the same thing. Probably somebody interviewed her without using a taperecorder and jotted all her quotes down haphazardly. Everthing seems paraphrased. It just doesn't come across as her usual broken, scattered word usage at all.
I don't think it makes her sound old. I'm only 24 and I don't completely disagree with Stevie. I wouldn't want my kids sitting in front of a computer all day long when they should be outside riding bikes and running around. That's the reason my parents never bought me a Nintendo in the 80s...and I still have never played any video games.
I don't have an ipod either. For me, half the fun of music is having the album, artwork, liner notes, etc, in my hands.
I thought that too. Especially the part about wanting to slap Jessi, and since when does Stevie say "gosh"? Could anyone actually find this on the Herald Sun website? I did a search but all I could pull up was the brief article about Stevie taking her mom's betting advice. I never got a Google Alert for it either... weird.
Sounds weird, but maybe so. It's funny that such an anti-internet/technology interview with her would come out right after their little tantrum. The article lists two writers... a Google search of "Stevie Nicks" and "Nui Te Koha" turns up two results for earlier articles on the Herald Sun site, but "Stevie Nicks" and "Claire Sutherland" brings up nothing. Nor does searching for the title of the article. Fishy.
Oh puh-lease....
Assuming that there is ANY truth to this article:
What she allegedly said was "computer games, text messaging and mobile phones have turned the new generation into social morons."
I believe the term "social morons" would mean people who don't know how to communicate face to face or function well socially because they spend all their spare time sitting in front of a game console or on a cell phone (I'm surprised there was no mention of TV -- I think that is a major social inhibitor.) Keep in mind, there is a BIG difference between "social morons" and "morons."
However, I'm finding it hard to believe Stevie would use an insensitive term like "morons" in an interview....What someone (anyone, not just Stevie) may say to friends and terms they may use privately is totally different that what they might say if being interviewed or quoted in a published article. I wouldn't know if Stevie ever uses the term at home, but I doubt she would use it publicly.
As far as Stevie saying "Gosh", I wonder if she actually said "God" but they found that offensive to print, so they changed it.
I myself don't doubt the legitimacy of the article. Stevie has said before she doesn't like the internet. I can believe all the opinions in the articles are hers, but not some of the word usage. Like the words "gosh" and "moron" (which I agree the ariticle does not attribute as a direct quote) and then her saying she would like to "slap" Jessi, seems out of character.
