* The Fleetwood Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer - who quit the band during a 1970s' US tour to join a religious cult called the Children of God - has delivered an unceremonious snub to his own children.
He's just cancelled plans to visit the UK for the launch of Jynxt, a band that four of them have formed, after being offended by a track on their debut album.
Apparently, Spencer, pictured in his heydey, was highly upset by the lyrics to their track Don't Believe: "I don't believe in God/I don't believe in you/I don't believe in anything/That nobody wouldn't do."
In a letter to his offspring, seen by Pandora, he explains: "If you have a song saying 'there is no God', I cannot and will not endorse the CD. I don't know if I need to get into more details than that, except that the philosophy goes against my very grain."

Rock 'n roll, Jer.

I can just about see his point - he might also feel that the lyric is directed at him personally. I'm sure he's been around long enough not to let something like that bother him in the long run though, they are his kids after all - maybe after a while he'll lighten up a bit :)
As has been suggested, God wouldn't have been overjoyed at some of the things Jeremy used to get up to in his younger days either, so what's the difference?

Well I'm guessing Jeremy has fully "repented" for his past transgressions again the lord.

Thank you so much for posting this, Livia! :)
"I don't believe in God/I don't believe in you/I don't believe in anything/That nobody wouldn't do."
Seems like they're trying to sound like Lennon on "God".

Yeah, I forgot - God doesn't care what you do as long as you apologise for it afterwards

Well... yeah. What the hell would be the point otherwise?

Like father like son. Face it guys (and Gals) Jeremy is available to speak
where Pete and Danny fear to tread. I'm going to go listen to
Kiln House....Damn!
What a great f*cking band we all love. I'm guessing at least 3 generations:cool:
Chili....I'm missing J S and the Children:)

Me, too. But also bizarre. And inflexible. And douchebaggish. I mean, C'MON! Your own kids? Over some song lyrics? Retardo.

I think it is, too. But it's also unsurprising, considering his past with Children of God and how he's all kinds of ****ed up.

Not really. That cult really did a number on him and he's still heavily involved with them. I'm sure he holds some resentment towards his children from breaking free from it, too.

Yeah, but I'm suprised he's still as crazy as he was. I didn't know he was still so crazy. Did you know? I thought, like many other people from then, that he would have outgrown the crazy.
Especially where his kids are involved.
Weird, no?
I mean, how can such a good guitarist be so crazy still? It defies logic.

Oh, get real. Musical talent doesn't say anything about your character/personality.
Anyway, I feel for his children. Not just over this, but also for growing up in that cult.

Okay, I'll get real. Honestly, you are correct, I wasn't being as real as I could have been when expressing that opinion. I'm a bit lazy, sometimes.
I am just suprised when anyone goes so crazy, for so long. The fact that it is Jeremy Spencer makes it even less palatable. :distress:
Also, most people I like are good at music. Perhaps I am biased. Perhaps I am ascribing personaity traits to people which don't exist.
Anyway, Mari, you've shown me the error of my opinion, and that, perhaps, I put musicians on too much of an intellectual pedestal.
Thank You.
I am no longer suprised that Jeremy Spencer uniformly rejected all of his kids' creative effort/album because they mentioned not believing in god in one of their lyrics. What else would we expect him to do?? Why, I don't know! But I do know that in my first comment I was not looking at the situation realistically. And I feel sorry for his children growing up in the cult, too. I had no idea.
:wavey: Eh, it's ok.
I guess I take that stuff personal somewhat. My dad went nuts for years in the New Age world and that's one of the reasons we don't talk anymore.
About going crazy like that.. I guess you can get to a point where you can't return from anymore. And people don't 'just' end up in cults, there's something wrong to begin with that they try to heal that way.
Oh well, I know about putting idols on pedestals, it's kind of natural to do that, right.
I am no longer suprised that Peter Green uniformly rejected all of his kids' creative effort/album because they mentioned not believing in god in one of their lyrics.
Psst!
It's Jeremy who's the cult-y kid-snubber, not Peter.

By most accounts, Jeremy was very religious before joining the Children Of God - to the point of carrying a miniature bible in his coat.
Apart from that, are Jeremy's kids the Grandchildren Of God?

Given that he was very religious back in the late 60s despite his antics on stage, he must have been a very complex young man - no reason why he should be any less complex now. Or self-contradictory, or difficult, or enigmatic, or whatever you want to call it. How many of us have understood anything that Jeremy has ever done, or can say they know how the guy ticks? So why should this latest thing make any sense to us either? Without the full story from him and his kids, we don't really have much basis for a judgement :)
