View Full Version : Technical question regarding his solos..

This may seem like a stupid question, so please be patient with me.. :-)

It's very simple.. When Lindsey does his solos, he takes a note by placing one finger on the fretboard, but then he strums all the strings.. Why don't we hear the rest of the strings? If he had it extremely EQ'ed, then I could understand it. But that's not the case, cause he can shift the string as easily as anything.. A good example of this is the end of 'Gypsy' in The Dance or Live in Boston, the fingers on his left hand are all over the place, but his right hand is taking all the strings.. It's as though that the guitar only picks up the active string..

Do any of you get this...? :o If so, please help..

He probably is muting the other strings by touching them with his left hand. A common technique which Lindsey, I'm sure, has completely down.

Do you understand what I'm saying? :D

Yeah, I do.. And I've considered that possibility, but I just can't see him do it in so many instances..

Everyone has had some good points on this one. Lindsey primarily plays a lot of open notes as well. I play in the exact same style. The ending to "Gypsy" on "The Dance" is very simple, but sound complex. The notes are played rather quickly on the top three strings.

So when are you gonna post some audio of your playing? You can't just keep talking about how easy it is to play Lindsey stuff without letting us hear you tackle it no problemo.

Same goes for all you other musicians.

It IS easy...i still have the 50 MB file of the "come" solo on my work laptop...whenever I find a way to bounce it over so its attainable, I will. Remember, I'm fairly computer illiterate

Actually, he does it with his right hand too. He rests his thumb on the lower string right next to the one he is playing. The entire thumb is at work in this process, going all the way to the wrist usually.

I checked that out yesterday on Live in Boston, and I've never noticed that before. Pretty cool.. But how does he prevent us from hearing the strings that are higher than the one he's playing...?

Yeah, but that doesn't really answer my question.. Cause while he's doing it, he is strumming all the strings. I would like to hear Audios of your playing as well.. ;)

But, IS he REALLY strumming all the strings or is it an illusion of the camera?

I can play single note flurries on my guitar, my hand motion LOOKS like I'm "strumming", but I'm actually only plucking a single string.

Excuses, excuses.

Open the file in CDex (freeware) & chop it in half or quarter, & then e-mail it right to You Send It from work.

Or just record something new -- a minute or two to keep file size down. We don't need to hear your entire Come solo.

Read the post Chili just made two comments up. He's right. My hands are all over the place but I could just be playing one string. The technique is a flailing, like a banjo picker. The fingernails pick single notes while the hand flails outward. He's not strumming "all" the strings. In fact, Lindsey very rarely "strums."

Actually.. I've listened through a lot of his solos these last few days, and now I'm sure he's muting the other strings. You can hear it on 'Countdown' very clearly, he's hitting the other strings. So he must mute them.. It's also easy to hear on 'I'm So Afraid', in any live version..

You're very quick to point out that you play just like him, though I find that very hard believe. No offense.. But I've been playing for years, and I find it d*** hard to even sound remotely like him..

Since about 1997, I've auditioned about 25 guitarists who all told me they sounded like Lindsey, & quite frankly none of them did. Which isn't to say that Demon doesn't, but I've just heard so many claims from so many guitarists & drummers & bass players, etc., about their 'style' & whom they were able to sound like & play like, & it never quite panned out that way.

I agree. I'm not waiting on a chopped up come solo. I wanna hear if he can build up the same tension. For a nonguitarplayer it's not about skills or sound, I'm unaware of that. It's tension and appeal. I need the whole damn solo for that!

I've always been jealous of that man...what a job!

I've been practising the thumb-thing today, and it really is a great technigue.. I've learned to stop before the finger reaches the higher string, it's not difficult at all. The only tough thing is to keep the thumb down and keep the right pressure on the strings..

I dont know...maybe the way we're explaining it is hard to understand. I think you'd need to see someone play in that style to really "get it."

On the other note, I said i'd PLAYED like Lindsey. I never said I sounded like him. His tone is quite difficult to achieve. A lot of the live sound is because of the Rick Turner guitar, and the way the sound is run thru the board. His studio sound is relatively easy to re-create. Although, when I play live stuff...I have my own tone. My picking style is just like Lindsey's but I have my own sound too. As I've said before, i learned to play classical guitar 1st...so my style from the start was finger picking. Then I was introduced to Lindsey in high school and it just clicked. I realized the way I was playing could also be done in a "lead players" style.

Eventually...(!) I will get the "Come" solo I recorded in my bedroom and you can see for yourself. The fingerstyle is definitely "lindsey" all the way, but the tone is different. The sound itself is harder to achieve. Plus, he's Lindsey. No one will ever sound exactly like Lindsey but Lindsey.

Classical guitar playing and Lindsey's fingerpicking are very different. When you play Never Going Back Again, do you play in that classical style? Because if you are then all of our hopes and dreams of you playing just like Lindsey will be crushed. Crushed I tell you.

I am aware that classical playing and Lindsey's fingerpicking are different. I never said otherwise. In general, I DONT play Never Going Back Again....I CAN play it but thats not the point. Playing that song in a "classical style" doesnt even come into play. The major difference really between the two is the way the hand rests on the guitar.

What does it matter anyway? If you can play the song, and people recognize it...great. I taught myself how to play. So even in the classical vein I never played the "correct" way. I taught myself since no one in my family played, nor did I have anyone to learn from. I have never wanted to be a "Lindsey" clone. I play in the same manner but thats about it. If I had about $6000 to spend on gear, and guitars I might sound more "like" Lindsey but I do just fine on my own.

More people should play music: it releases tension but it also builds tension. One could use the good-cholesterol & bad-cholesterol example: playing music releases bad tension but builds good tension.

Would you agree, Demon?

Playing music is goodnight & light & love. And sharing, we must share our goodness & light. Everybody can be healed, I believe. I seek to heal.

I've no idea how to read tabs myself. I'll bet the demon does, with his infinite chasm of knowledge. Perhaps Lux does. Wake up, dearest. The flock needs your assistance.

tab is very simple....however if you dont know the song already, its useless. Tab doesnt show anything other than where to play the notes. Things like timing and vibrato are pretty much lost. Thats the downside to it. Unfortunately I cannot read music. I wish that I could though.

I had my little boombox directly to the right of the camera (which you cant see) playing the Live in Boston CD. I had my amp cranked up so its going to overpower the rest of the track. I got really sloppy at the ending because I didnt know the notes...but what the hell.

Who was asking for HCTS tabs? You can find them on this site:
www.powertabs.net

You will need the Powertab software ( free ) to read and PLAY the tabs.

You will find it under "Links" and "official PT site"
They also have some good FM tabs.

I played classical guitar exclusively from 97-99, then got an Telecaster in 2000 and started to learn lead. So my lead style had progressed over the last 5 yrs really.

Lux, this is a wonderfully silly little song, very Syd Barrett-esque. I hope that won't insult you. I really like it, I have played it several times. It reminds me of the little songs Pooh bear sings about the weather.

MylittleDemon and RFM you are both great. How long have you been playing?

Actually, he does it with his right hand too. He rests his thumb on the lower string right next to the one he is playing. The entire thumb is at work in this process, going all the way to the wrist usually.

I thought he flicks down the string with what is usually his middle finger but that only seems to be when he is playing a note a number of time are doing a bend.

But, IS he REALLY strumming all the strings or is it an illusion of the camera?

I think its an illusion myself, but cuoldn’t be 100% sure.

It's also easy to hear on 'I'm So Afraid', in any live version

I don’t think he does mute them on ‘I’m so afraid’ Pretty sure he doesn’t.

I am aware that classical playing and Lindsey's fingerpicking are different

I’ve been playing guitar for about a year now and have just about got the classical style nailed. When I watch ‘the dance’ for example I pay very close attention to Lindsay’s playing style and I do notice in some songs (although not so many) he does play using a different picking style is.

Could one of you please tell me what style(s) he does use as well as the classical style, thanks. Also is it the pentatonic scale he uses when doing the majority of solos? I want to get in a position where I can play similar to Lindsay for songs such as ‘Go insane (acoustic version)’ and don’t want to get into any bad habits. Any help at all will be appreciated.

His "style" is nothing but bad habits, says he. And he has no classical style influence whatsoever. And he has no idea what the pentatonic scale is. Most of your questions are not accurate and therefore have no answers. And you shouldn't try to play exactly like somebody else.

Oh, and duly noted. Lindsay

And he has no idea what the pentatonic scale is.Certainly he isn't trained in the traditional sense (the sense of which is more & more remote as the years press on), & certainly he isn't exactly steeped in theory background, but I think he'd know what the pentatonic scale was if you mentioned it to him. He surely knows what it is in practice, since it's all over the "Tango in the Night" album ("Mystified," "Little Lies") as well as numerous other tracks he's concocted. Wouldn't you agree, Bobo?
And you shouldn't try to play exactly like somebody else. Why not? What's so horrible about that? I hear a lot of people dismiss attempts other people make to sound like so-and-so, claiming that they should be concentrating on something these people are pleased to call "their own style" (as if just playing by your own devices & ideas automatically forges a "style" in any important sense of the word).

Well, let me tell you, if you had sat through the literally hundreds of piano recitals of semi-gifted or virtually ungifted performers -- all concentrating on "their own style" -- you'd have run screaming from the recital rooms along with me. I wish more than a few of those kids had been in love with Michelangeli or Argerich or Collard or Kempf or Pollini, etc., to the point of wanting to ape little stylistic quirks of theirs. It would have made for a helluva lot more interesting recitals.

By his style I meant his finger plucking. You mentioned earlier in the thread that it would be near impossible to play ‘never going back again’ using the conventional classical style and I did not fully understand what you meant by this. Thought there might be a different finger plucking technique I’m not aware of.

I’m pretty sure he does use the pentatonic scale when playing some of his solos (if not a similar, more advanced scale)

I’m not trying to play exactly like him, BUT Lindsey in the only guitarist I’m aware of that use’s finger plucking for the type of music he is playing and I want to aim to play in a similar style to that as well off course, taking other influences into it. Basically I want to be able to play some of his songs and came here for some help from other guitarists that have tried some of his stuff, like yourself, and managed to sound great. Only want a little push in the right direction and to share knowledge. I certainly didn’t come here to provoke or be spoken to rudely but I apologise if my questions aren’t very clear or accurate. I also apologise if you where not being rude, just it seems as if you where.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure he uses the pentatonic scale. I don’t know how to read music or have a clue about theory but I can play the pentatonic scale so its not as if you need a great deal of theory (if any) to play it.

Why not? What's so horrible about that? I agree. Everyone has there influences and an influence is just that. Someone/thing that inspires you to re create something along the lines of what it was that inspired you. I think the majority of musicians and artists in general would be flattered not insulted that someone has been influenced to try and incorporate there way of playing/creating there music/art and using it themselves to develop there own style.

Read what Bobo says about Lindsey & the "classical style." Lindsey is self-taught & self-trained, & is probably no more steeped in the classical tradition than most other rock guitarists.

I’m teaching myself and don’t want to spend many hours a day playing in the classical tradition to find out that my whole finger plucking style is completely different to that of Lindseys. I’ll do a search of the forum and have a look a Bobos post to see if it becomes any clearer to me. Thanks David.

One thing Lindsey does & has always done a lot of is banjo frailing (sometimes called "flailing," as in Johnny Cash's autobiography).

Once again, thank you David. I’ll look up Flailing.

You mentioned earlier in the thread that it would be near impossible to play ‘never going back again’ using the conventional classical style and I did not fully understand what you meant by this.
Without going back and reading it, I don't think I said it would be impossible, it most certainly is possible. I think all I did was ask if the demon plays it in the classical style. And then went on to explain to the demon that our whole outlook on life would be crushed, crushed, if we found out that he wasn't playing everything exactly like Mr. Buckingham. You newbies wouldn't understand.

I’m pretty sure he does use the pentatonic scale when playing some of his solos (if not a similar, more advanced scale)
Just because he uses it doesn't mean he knows the term for it, or even the idea of it. Teenagers in punk bands write songs that are filled with basic music theory ideas and rules, but the vast majority have no idea what they're doing. They're just mimicking what they hear in other people's music.

I certainly didn’t come here to provoke or be spoken to rudely but I apologise if my questions aren’t very clear or accurate. I also apologise if you where not being rude, just it seems as if you where.

You see this is what I don’t understand. What is so different to the classical style and the way Lindsey plays it? Is it simply his hand position on the guitar that’s different (due to his bad habits as you explained earlier) or is it a completely different plucking style?

Just because he uses it doesn't mean he knows the term for it, or even the idea of it. Teenagers in punk bands write songs that are filled with basic music theory ideas and rules, but the vast majority have no idea what they're doing. They're just mimicking what they hear in other people's music.

I’m a teenager myself and as you can probably tell as of yet do not have too much of an idea of what to do. I’m sure Lindsey knows a damn site more theory than me and just wanted to know whether it is the pentatonic scale he uses when playing or if its some other scale I will have to learn to be able to try one of his solos, Like demons version of come, as far as I can tell that pentatonic.

Hey Tom,

I guess I should have been clearer in my argument...Lindsey knows a lot of classical style licks, he doesnt necessarily PLAY in a classical manner. His manner of picking is quite unlike the "classic" classical style. And yes, the position of the hand is very important. In true classical vein, your right hand would never touch the body of the guitar. It's more or less "dangling" downward to pick up on the strings, down with the thumb. You get the idea.

As far as Lindsey's music theory/knowledge of scales, etc...he claims to have none. If you really watch Lindsey's performances over the years...especially his solos...they are all very similar. Come, So Afraid, Murrow, Go Your own Way, Tango in the Night...all of these songs have very very close patterns.

BoBo and I have battled back and forth over such matters. I'm content to see it my way, and let him see it is...although in truth, as much as I hate to admit, I think we agree more than we disagree. I think in the end, it was partly my own playing technique that was in question. Which I *think* I have laid to rest when I posed the "Come" guitar solo.

David

Yeah, I’m pretty sure he uses the pentatonic scale. I don’t know how to read music or have a clue about theory but I can play the pentatonic scale so its not as if you need a great deal of theory (if any) to play it.Lindsey also plays a little piano (a little more than Stevie, a little less than Christine). So the idea of the "sound" of the black keys in contiguous order must mean something to him as a concept -- the pentatonic scale. Plus, we may be underestimating Lindsey's grasp of music theory. I think he has left enough clues over the years in interviews that he has a pretty good grasp of essential principles of music, at least at the pop level. The ideas of scales (major, minor, augmented, diminished, 7ths, etc.), positions (root on up to subdominant to dominant & back to root, etc.), & how songcraft is concocted in general (verses, choruses, bridges, etc.) -- I think he's familiar with all these concepts in both practice & theory.

I mean, after all, something must have been rubbing Stevie the wrong way all these years.

Hi Demon and once again, great playing on the come solo.

In true classical vein, your right hand would never touch the body of the guitar. It's more or less "dangling" downward to pick up on the strings, down with the thumb. You get the idea.

I think I get what you mean now.

I think I’m just incredibly naïve at finger plucking. I’ve just been looking into frailing and found its how you strike the sting with your thumb, that’s what I learnt anyway before getting lost in being expected to read music.

As of plucking style the only one I’m aware of is the ‘thumb plays the bottom 3 strings where the three fingers are used to pluck a string each. I’m not familiar with any other ways of plucking and perhaps this is where I’m getting confused with people saying Lindsey’s way of playing is not the same as classical.

I think what is meant by this is hand position. Although I’m sure there are other plucking ways that both Lindsey and classical players use I’m just, like I said, naive on the subject. I’ve heard the term bluegrass numerous times when trying to do some research on it but as of yet I haven’t a clue what is meant by it.

Yeah, I have noticed this. He seems to solo down the neck using the pentatonic and then at some stage does a bend where he continual plays the same note for a period of time (by flicking downwards on the string with his middle finger, I think this is what people where getting confused as strumming earlier in the thread) before continuing soloing down the neck.

Lindsey also plays a little piano (a little more than Stevie, a little less than Christine). So the idea of the "sound" of the black keys in contiguous order must mean something to him as a concept -- the pentatonic scale. Plus, we may be underestimating Lindsey's grasp of music theory. Yeah that is true. The guy’s been playing guitar good part of 40-50 years not to mention banjo and piano so along the way I’m sure he’s gained knowledge in theory. At least the basics, surely.

mean, after all, something must have been rubbing Stevie the wrong way all these years.

For your benefit as a "new" player...check out some OTHER guitarists. I really like the Edge, Carlos Santana, George Harrison, Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers to name a few. If you are intent on playing like Lindsey, that's ok, just see what else is out there. You get a broader spectrum of licks and techniques and can incorporate that into what YOU do.

He not only picks downward with his middle finger, but his "ring" finger and the index finger. It allows for a "quicker" attack than just using one finger.

Maybe I'm wrong but...

The solos on his own songs are sometimes very similar, but on Stevie's (and Christine's) not as much.

Yeah his solos in Stevies and Christines work are less focal but equally as fitting. The majority are still within the pentatonic scale I THINK.

I would agree. Probably one of his thicker solos out of the early days was that solo he did on You Make Loving Fun. Most of his guitar work was pretty subdued then. Then again, Lindsey's work isn't very solo-ridden up until recently.. I think his guitar work has become stronger over the last 13 yrs.

TomBanks147

Yeah his solos on the other songs are shorter and a litte more subtle but still sound perfect for the song. If you got all the guitar greats an put them in a room they could not come up with a better solo for silver springs (the version on the Dance, I prefer the tone on that one)

I think his influences have changed over the years, had he wrote the songs he wrote in the 80's today they would have sounded a hell of a lot different, in my opinion.

Personally I think he's a lot more mature at writings songs now than he ever has been. His guitar playing has streghtend greatly also, solos are more frequent but still right for the song. Say you will is my favourite Fleetwood Mac album possibly because I apreaciate it so much after buying the destiny rules DVD. I just think its a great album and it kills me to say it but i prefer it to the likes of rumours. I dunno maybe its because I wasn't around to witness how new, fresh and radical rumours was to the era but yeah, im rambling now. SYW, favourite FM album. Lindsey better now than ever.

I dunno maybe its because I wasn't around to witness how new, fresh and radical rumours was to the era but yeah, im rambling now. SYW, favourite FM album. Lindsey better now than ever.

I totally agree

Personally I think he's a lot more mature at writings songs now than he ever has been. His guitar playing has streghtend greatly also, solos are more frequent but still right for the song. Well I agree to certain extend, but you compare SYW and Rumours-lindsey. I agree on the fact he's a more complete song-builder now partially due to grown guitaristic skills and composition-possibilities coming out of that, partially due to VERY much grown lyrical depth. But LB's loose and sketchy songwritng and recordingskills from his Tusk-years is still the most exciting LB for me, although Shut Us Down breathes the directness of the Tusk-era again, so I think Lindsey's best time is STILL to come. Fuel for our impatience. Again.

After asking a few questions on here and gaining some knowledge I've been doing a little more research into how to use my right hand (when playing guitar that is  )

Would I be right in saying Atkins, Travis and classical styles of fingerpicking are the three styles Lindsey mainly uses? switching through whatever style he needs/wants too durring a particular song? Still can't get my head around this Flaling Banjo technique. Something to do with how you stike the string with your thumb? Anyway i'll carry on looking.

Thanks all.

I think in the end, it was partly my own playing technique that was in question. Which I *think* I have laid to rest when I posed the "Come" guitar solo.

Sorry, but I don't see that as "your own playing".. But more a (great) copy of Lindsey, both in playing and mannerisms as it has been pointed out..

I just meant in terms of BoBo and I arguing about whether or not I *could* play like Lindsey. That clip just happens to be what I am capable of as far as Lindsey's "riffs" are concerned. I generally play more bluesy, melodic stuff. I'm just blessed enough to be able to pick up on Lindsey's style to a certain degree.

Your B string is a little flat there.

So is Lindsey's about 80% of the time, too. (listen close to Live (1980)...his guitar is out of tune quite often on that)

It's cause he picks on that string more than any other I suppose.
