I've got to disagree with you guys. I like the studio/album version, but I LOVE the Tango/BTM live versions. I think it was a great rocker live!!!
By the way, I've also loved that lyric, "Do you remember, the face of a pretty girl".

I remember when I first bought TITN, and just being totally impressed by this song. For some reason, I love that distinct metallic sound (almost sounds like someone hitting a fence) that they play right before Christine starts to sing the chorus.

I've got to disagree with you guys. I like the studio/album version, but I LOVE the Tango/BTM live versions. I think it was a great rocker live!!!It was a super-duper rocker, marred only by the xylophonic hardware. They didn't need the damn ticky-tocky in a touring band already devoted to crowding the arrangements.
The line is a beautiful one -- Timothy White said it was an evocative representation of romantic alienation, or something like that.

I've always thought the live version was better than the studio version.
The studio version sounds like (in keeping with a lot of her Tango in the Night songs) it has been speeded up
Great song though!

Depends on which versions you have, I guess! The three or so that I own aren't really impressive...

They should have milked TITN a little longer and released this as a single.

They did do that in the U.K. Unfortunately, they released "Family Man" as the fifth single here in the U.S.

yea me too! i think the tango live version is amazing! one of the best on the dvd! i especially love the live harmony part when they sing "do you remember" and also the well.....s before the chorus, the only thing with that harmony is that i love chris singing the chorus, theres just something really special about her voice there, especially on the "do you remember" line -which i also love by the way - that i just fell in love with, i dont know what it is, her voice is just so beautiful!
& i love the lyrics of this song, maybe her best! the chorus is just amazing!!!! i would love to know what was really in her mind when she wrote this song!

When I first saw the tango video I fell in love with this. I think I can truthfully say this id my favorite Christine McVie song. It totally worked live and was in a great spot in the set. The crowd also ate it up.. Everytime she introduced it on the MASK tour she got an overwhelming reponse.

She has said she wrote this song about someone she had a relationship with years & years before, probably someone we've never heard about. She said she was just thinking about him & wondering if it was midnight where he was. He must have lived far away from her at that time.

Some of have speculated it's about a possible Christine/Lindsey romance while they were recording her '84 solo album.

Now wait a minute.;) :D 1984 was around the time when Chris & Eddy first started getting hot & heavy. I don't think Lindsey spent much time with her making that album, maybe a week or two. The only Chris/Lindsey rumor that I've heard was around Mirage time...and I don't believe that one.

When she said, "It's never been so gratifying" in People mag in '80, the tendency was to assume that it was Dennis Wilson she was talking about. But maybe it was Lindsey!

I don't really think they had any kind of romance, but I wouldn't be surprised if they took a roll or two in the hay. :)

Lindsey and I were hanging out in the shhhtudio, and I was gonna bugger off, but I said, "hold me" and he shtooped me right there on the mixing board. Isn't that weird.

Oh. Yeah, well, ok. They WERE kind of hit & miss early on. Try and get a version from the 1990 tour...you'll be "Wow-ing" in no time.

I agree: The live version of "Midnight" is the strongest performance on the Tango live set with Burnette and Vito...

Here's a copy of "Isn't It Midnight" from the 1990 BTM tour. It's from Manchester, one of the very few boots I have from this tour. By the way, I didn't have a problem with the way they did on the Tango tour either. I just think this song worked great live on both tours.

ive thought that before, also, in the dance video, i think its in bleed to love her, but it could be something else as well, there are some EXTREMELY intense looks going on between c & l, & lindsey is definently not looking at stevie, you can tell watching it that hes looking right past/over her at chris.

Ah, thank you! Well, I retract my previous statement. :) This performance is much better. Chris sounds sexy! (Duh.) I also tracked down one from Vienna '90, which I liked.

this is one of my all-time favorite lines of Christine's. to me, her lyrics are similar to Stevie's in the way they evoke such a novel-like (making this up as I go along) feel in me...like I am remembering something in a past life that I had forgotten...just gorgeous

Here is the exact quote from Chris in that 1979 People Magazine:
"It's never been so vibrant, so gratifying". This quote is in a caption above a picture of Chris. Then it says she was referring to her Tusk love ballads AND Dennis Wilson. There are quite a few references to Dennis in the article. It's not referring to Lindsey in any way. By the way, the picture is somewhere in the picture thread. I remember posting it.:)

thankyou!!!! funnily enough this quote -"I'm 36, and my life-style is pretty much settled as far as sacrificing and accommodating myself to children." seems to change mouths, i heard somewhere that it was dennis who said it before.
oh and i love this bit - Shot of Christine and Dennis Wilson in a tight and cozy embrace: Beach Boy Dennis, says Chris, is "delightfully eccentric, and people's Mother Earth image of me is wrong. I get crazy too." thats cute, especially the quote from dennis!:D
