It is on now and OY I forgot how bad:
1. The script was when compared to the book
and
2. Mega Steisand's overwraught and awful performance that bordered comedy
But, overall the movie is a B- perhaps solely because of the mother's performance, which was fab.

I agree. I loved the book but the movie was kinda boring and didn't do anything for me. I don't remember very much but I was disappointed with the movie.

 Well, I'll just pipe in to say I love it, but then I love Barbra almost as much as Stevie, so what'd you expect, right. I do agree that there are some really slow parts and some that are awfully cheesy, but it's still great to me. And, as someone sexually assaulted as a child, very poignant.

Yeah, it's really, really awful. I thought is was alright when I saw it when it first came out, but jeezus it's baaaaaaaad.
The sparkly nylons and the catching the football and saying "oh, my nails!!" and the complete unbelievability of Queen Jason Gould as a potential football player and..........
Ai, yi, YI !!!!! I could go on for days.

This is one of my absolute alltime favorite books and I've never seen the movie because I've heard so many horrible things about it.

Yes it was from that aspect, but, to me, the book was better

I read this and loved it but vaguely remember it. Does he become schizophrenic? Or a family member of his?

It's sappy and irritating, and in Streisand/Lowenstein family my favourite was Jeroen Krabbe (the husband). It has some good key scenes though, Nolte's performance wasn't bad, and this south apparently drawn with warm colours but built on tragedies was nicely set. I still believe Streisand could be an interesting director, but she has to throw all the mirrors and make a movie with Von Trier first. :D

Wasn't it 1991? It is an OK movie.
But The Mirror Has Two Faces is much better!

I've already posted it once before, but if you insist.
I've never seen another movie dripping with so much self-love and ego in my life. Every frame is laboriously set up to make her, a frumpy Jewish woman under the impression that she's a walking goddess, appear as if she's the most glamorous of movie stars; as if the heavens parted just so that a ray of light could shoot down upon her being, illuminating her for the world to see. The gauze shots are enough to make one think that they downed a few bottles of heavy liquor that they never actually did, and the heavy-handed treatment of the subject matter coupled with her insatiable quest for mass adoration makes one feel as if they're being conned, emotionally and aesthetically.
Never mind that Nick Nolte was anally raped as a child, no, she doesn't care about any of that; it is not essential to the story being told. The only thing that she wants to get across, and does she ever hammer into your head, is that she's a complicated character. Yes, Babs is complicated. She has enormous wealth, a fabulous career, and Elliot Gould's spawn. Of course, we already know what a complicated character she is, anyway. We're simply confused about which character while we're watching it: Barbra Streisand or the one she's playing in the movie?

I wish for once people would leave Barbra alone. I've been a fan of hers longer than I've been a Stevie fan (age 11). So all this crap about "gauze shots" and her thinking she God's greatest gift is BS. If you've read the book, Lowenstein is a beautiful woman that Tom Wingo falls in love with. It wouldn't be interesting if she looked like Dr. Ruth. The whole movie is centered around Nolte. And yes somethings were left out, but if she had left everything in you would be bitching about how long the movie was. Pat Conroy wrote in a copy of the book, ..."You've made me a better writer, you rescued my sweet book, and you've honored me by taking it with such seriousness and love. Great love and great thanks and I'll never for get that you gave The Prince of Tides[I] back to me, as a gift." Pat Conroy
To me sounds like he approved. The only thing I wish she had done differently with the movie was leaving so much out about Luke and Savannah. But the general mass audience that was to see this movie would rather see more of the love story part of it. And it only makes sense to have the love story be so prominent because, "Lowenstein, Lowenstein" is the last words Tom says in the book. I think the Barbra bashing years are over. The woman is 62 for Pete's sake. She makes an album every 2-3 years and a movie every 8-10 years so I don't think the "haters" have to suffer as much as they say they do.
Sorry if I sound defensive but if the shoes were on Stevie's feet wouldn't you want to defend your girl? Also, lets leave [I]The Way We Were out of it or blood will be shed. ;)

Then why did Babs, who is not beautiful, play her. That is yet another example of Babs' ego getting in the way.

Babs is the sole reason I didn't see the movie. I just couldn't picture her as Lowenstein.
