Big exclusive news from yours truely!
The last night I was at dinner with friends, and while talking about careers we'd like to have, I mentioned that I'd love to be the touring keyboardist for Fleetwood Mac.
One of my friends then told me the news that another mutual friend has an uncle who has recently been hired as Fleetwood Mac's 'new' keyboardist.
I spoke with that friend this morning who confirmed what I was told. He said that his uncle has been in the studio with the band and will be touring with them.
I was told that he is also the resident keyboardist for Jefferson Starship, so kudos to whoever can find out who that is. According to a quick Google search, I found the name Chris Smith, who joined Starship in 1997, but I do not know if this is him. (I didn't get the name)
So yeah, big news! I'm hoping it's true. I wouldn't be making it up, even if I'm so jealous the position has been filled. ;)

Well, I'm only going with what I'm told. I'm not sure how accurate it really is, but it's certainly something to be hopeful about.
Well, he could just be replacing Brett Tuggle or someone for a tour or to play keyboards for a new album. I'm sure he wouldn't be a real "member" of the band.

I don't see why it can't be true either. This is certainly more believable than other things we've heard in the past. When rumors first surfaced about Lindsey rejoining The Mac in '97, I'm sure many said "no way!" to that, too.:wavey:

Why? I like Brett, the person. I haven't thought that much about Brett, the musician. The Brett Boob Touch didn't impart very much info. I mean, he's obviously not Christine, but beyond that...

I mean, he's obviously not Christine, but beyond that...Technically, he's better than Christine, as most session players are at that level. In terms of personal style, though, the guy just sort of disappears into the crowd, whereas Chris is unique.
Personally, I have nothing against Brett. He just sort of symbolizes the band's decision to go bigger & splashier in its live sound. But you can't blame Brett -- or any of the other hired guns -- for that. They're just doing what they're hired to do.

He reminds me of a high school garage band member, making his first appearance at The Battle of the Bands and trying to gain attention by hamming it up to such a degree that you wonder if he isn't slightly retarded or just didn't get enough love as a wee lad. I'm sure he's a perfectly nice fellow, but I find him cloying and I don't particularly care for the theatrical roadshow extravaganza that the band has morphed into. Stop the pandering and over-the-top theatrics. At least Chris added some class and subtlety to the proceedings, opting not to bash the audience members over the head with a "Look-At-Us" attitude at every possible opportunity.

Okay, wait. I've barely even noticed Brett was there at all I've seen, except for when he comes out on guitar to do landslide. He is a bit bouncy, but he's never distracted me. How strange. I guess I just thought he was appropriately enthusiastic, and, you know, just performing. But in all honesty, I hardly never noticed him. Like, I had to make a mental note: "Oh, look at Brett, because it's polite"
And surely he is a better musician then "Battle of the Bands"???
You have to remember, he is the most friendly MacMember. Which means, I actually think he is just really friendly and happy and enthusiastic.

Oh, now, this I can agree with. Thanks David. Although, with what I've heard of them both, I previously suspected that Chris was a better musician, as well. A more esoteric, anomalistic, varied keyboard player. But I didn't know. I guess that's part of the "personal style" that intimated "more talent" to me. :)

Oh my gawd. Do you mean like Lindsey HamingHam, slapping his guitar with both hands? Which, technically speaking, the guitar isn't even close to the key of ISA? ISA is in Fm. A standard tuned guitar, SPANKED as such, is nowhere even CLOSE to Fm. If you LISTEN to ISA, on LIB, you hear a guitar almost disappear from the mix, when he's spanking it. THAT'S BECAUSE IT DOESN'T FIT THE KEY OF THE SONG. They yanked the volume of the guitar star out, because it doesn't fit!!! So blame Brett for putting on a show. I'm sure Hamingham was the catalyst. The spanking sucks. JMO.

She probably is. I didn't get any details as to when any tour would happen. I can certainly try though. I'll defintely keep everyone up to date if I hear anything else.
Anyways, as for Brett--I don't like him as a Christine suppliment. Never have. I don't really mind him on things like Stand Back or Stevie's solo material because that's not Christine--just one of Stevie's many keyboardists from over the years. (Christine didn't even play the synth parts on Stand Back correctly ;))
Brett has a major tendancy to take a lot of creative liberties as a keyboard player, which I don't think fits with Christine's more conservative music.
To me, when he plays Dreams or Rhiannon, it sounds like a bad cover, which in some respects, it is.
This means more to me because I am a keyboard player. I take great pride in accurately playing what the keyboardist I'm covering originally set out to do.

You have to remember, he is the most friendly MacMember. Which means, I actually think he is just really friendly and happy and enthusiastic. He does come across as a very nice guy--no doubt he is. Although I always remember with all these backup dudes that they're being paid to support the band, & there's a certain amount of PR in all that. So I doubt any of them would ever start barking at autograph-seeking fans or something equally rude.
But all in all I think Taku is the coolest of the lot, current & past, because he actually hangs out on the Internet -- & not just lurking, either, but mixing with the gallery. Such a far cry from many of the insufferable wackjobs that Stevie has hired over the years: people who crow TO us about wanting to AVOID us, & about how much "pain" the online fans give them & their boss. What sheer arrogance (& stupidity--because who the hell boasts about avoiding the Internet these days?). Stevie's really a moron for hiring such ****tards year after year. Her people have consistently shown themselves to be some of the stupidest & nastiest in the business.

Actually, I was referring more to Stevie's aides-de-camp: the Karen Johnstons, the Kim Brakeleys, the Chris Nickses, the Glen & Freddie Parrishes, the Lisa Stewarts, the Barbara Bucks, the Ginny Kamanos, the John Kinneys . . . all those endless hordes of buttcracks constantly milling about, whose sole job (fans seem not to understand) is to keep fans away from their mistress. They're all essentially nothing more than bouncers, but even bouncing should be performed professionally (which the aides seem not to understand).

I really can't imagine that much, if any, studio work has been done unless it is studio work by original Fleetwood Mac band members. Remember Mick had made a comment a while back that the original members of Fleetwood Mac might possibly reunite to work on new material and tour?
As long as it takes Lindsey to work on something and "perfect" it and with Stevie performing in Australia I just can't imagine the SYW band getting another record ready for release by 2007. Anything is possible, I guess. I can't see FM letting their anniversary go by in 2007 without something being released or some kind of tour. But with so little being said by the band members themselves it's really too early for me to speculate just exactly what all they're going to do.
And I may definitely be in the minority here but I'd much rather prefer Fleetwood Mac not work on a new studio album (unless it is the original band members). I'd much rather see solo records and shows by Lindsey and Stevie over a new Fleetwood Mac record right now.

Why would the Mac be hiring a new keyboardist for a tour in 2007, now? I think we will see them out this summer..2006..irregardless of what Mick has said about the original Mac getting together and all that. (or what Stevie's PR people told a fan in NYC) They could tour both summers, 06 and 07, like they did for SYW ..and play up the anniversary in 07. Sadly, I do not think we will get a new album.
I doubt we will hear much about the Mac's plans until Stevie's gigs in Aussie are over. They do not want people who might fly over to Aussie to see her to stay home because they hear the Mac might have plans for this coming summer.
I wonder why Brett was replaced? Or if he will be in Aussie with La Nicks?

Esp. since he also is the guitar player, back up vocalist, and keyboard (all types) player for La Nicks solo and he LB during Soundstage. That makes no sense to me. But, maybe he resigned because he did not want to tour so much. All in all, Brett is a great guy and I am the better for having met him.

Well if this supposed hiring has any relevance at all, possibly it could be because Carlos or Neale cannot commit, so therefore they might have Brett do guitars, and hire someone else for keyboards?

Very interesting point of view. I think even Chris might agree with you, she never really considered herself technically the "best" studio player in the business. But her style is very unique and outstanding...and when it comes to the blues...Chris is the woman!!! ;)

I can understand the Mac having a session player for the studio (and if they went into the studio in '02 for SYW, it's quite possible in terms of timing that they're working on something right now), but the only way I can imagine Brett not being on tour with them is if he's committed to something else. He did say in the Q&A that he's had offers for other projects. Outside of that, it doesn't make sense. If anything it seems to me that he would be their first call for touring since he can cover so much ground musically. Granted, he isn't Chris, but no one is.
I'll be devastated if Brett's gone. I've come within feet of meeting him on these past two tours. Just the thought of him not being there puts a big lump in my throat.

Very interesting point of view. I think even Chris might agree with you, she never really considered herself technically the "best" studio player in the business. She isn't the best any player in the business, studio or otherwise. Her chops are intermediate-level.
But her style is very unique and outstanding...and when it comes to the blues...Chris is the woman!!! ;)She's a good blues player in an understated sort of way -- the Sonny Thompson tradition of hanging back & blending in to the rhythm, even helping prop it up. But Chris can't do the more spectacular styles of blues piano: Chicago/barrelhouse, Texas, etc. Chris plays a lot like Bob Hall (who played piano for those Tramp albums with Mick Fleetwood). What Chris brings to the table isn't advanced chops or spectacular attack but personal style. Also, like Mick, she plays an excellent shuffle -- which isn't too surprising, considering she's a lefty.
Chris is a lot like the other members of Fleetwood Mac during the late 1970s: each one isn't a spectacular technician as an instrumentalist or a vocalist or even as a lyricist; but when you add up the various idiosyncratic skills in each one, you get genuine accomplishment & weight -- a real personal statement that's often completely missing in the flashier showoffy musicians & composers. Really, in terms of pop tracking, you couldn't have assembled a better group of people than John, Mick, Chris, Lindsey & even Stevie. Considering their particular aesthetic concerns, they were the perfect group of people.

I doubt we will hear much about the Mac's plans until Stevie's gigs in Aussie are over. They do not want people who might fly over to Aussie to see her to stay home because they hear the Mac might have plans for this coming summer.
I find it hard to believe they would be thinking about how many people will be flying over to see her in Australia. I'm sure that number will be pretty small compared to how many Aussies will be going to the shows.

I agree completely. I think there will be far more Australians in attendance at her upcoming shows than there will be people hopping planes to fly 24 hours or more to attend one. Not every fan can afford a trip like that (or would even want to make it to begin with).

Why would Fleetwood Mac announcing their plans stop anyone from flying to Australia to see Stevie? If it's something they really want to do and can afford they're going to do it. They can see both if they want to.
If Fleetwood Mac wanted to say anything about future plans the band as a whole might have I believe they would regardless of Stevie's current solo plans. If anything I think they could use her to their advantage. It would be a pretty good way to start building interest in Fleetwood Mac for Stevie to mention upcoming tour plans at her solo shows or interviews promoting the shows.
I don't think they'll be doing anything in 2006. The Say You Will tour went on too long as it was. I think they'll wait until they can really put the merchandising machine into overdrive with the 2007 anniversary before embarking on a tour.
