How are you celebrating Halloween? Costume parties? Trick-or-treating? Playing tricks on your neighbors?
I'll be carving pumpkins with my nephew on Saturday, in preparation for his school's "Fall Festival" Sunday afternoon. I don't think I'll actually make the festival, however - I have a costume party on Saturday night, and I don't plan to be conscious on Sunday if I can help it.
On Monday, I'll be decorating the yard (with MY pumpkins), and will spend the evening passing out treats to the neighborhood kids. And maybe a few tricks too.
A friend of mine in Houston told me about this great prank he used to play on kids, and I might try it. You hook up an air compressor, hide it behind some hay bales or appropriate decoration, then run the air hose down your shirt sleeve. Put the air nozzle in whatever hand you hold the candy bag - it must be something that hangs down from your hand - and when the goblins reach into the bag for their treat, you press the nozzle. Of course, you get a horrifying loud hiss, and a puff of air that I'm told is sure to startle just about anyone.
And no, I would never do such a thing to really little kids. I'm thinking more of those "I'm so cool in my goth makeup" teenagers that seem to overrun our area every year.
Any other trick ideas?

I'm going to a Halloween party on Saturday night and just plan on watching some scary movies on Halloween night because I have to teach class the next morning. Nothing too exciting, I'm afraid.

Yeah, if someone pays me a million dollars!
I'll be drinking myself into oblivion Friday - Sunday (nothing unusual there) and Monday is the big annual Castro Street Halloween party in San Francisco.
I've rented a fabulous Batman costume that looks like it could have been used in one of the movies; it's that great! Unfortunately it weighs about 300 pounds, as it's mostly rubber.

Me too - BUT - I was supposed to haul it to New Orleans for the annual gala, which is not going on, though a smaller party is.
So, I am going out with a few friends and maybe I'll see Saw ( ) on Mon.

No nipples unfortunately, but the bulge is pretty impressive!

Halloween begins tonight with a party. Break on Friday night. BIG studio party on Saturday night. Break (Recouperation) on Sunday. Monday/Halloween is the huge Street Fair or a party at a mansion off Sunset Blvd. Not sure which on that night.
My costume: Electrocuted. I have done this the past 5 years. I get lots of attention and it's so easy. I wear normal street clothes. Then I stand my hair on end, straight up (lot's of product). I have a pair of eye glasses that I have cracked one of the lenses and put them askew on my head, and I have an electrical socket outlet that I cut a whole in so that I put my finger through it. Hehehe...then add some blood to make a bloody noise.
It's such a fun costume. One year I hid incense behind my head so it looked like my head was still smoking...but I ended up burning some of my hair. Not good. So that little part is out this year.
Have fun all of you!!!

That's a cool costume idea! Did you use stick incense? If so, would cone incense be safer?
I've already stocked up on incense for my yard. I buy the cheapest, stinkiest stuff from the dollar store, and hide it in the bushes & around the trees. It creates a great effect, with the smoke and the smell. And a heck of a lot simpler and cheaper than a fog machine.

The air compresser sounds like a cool idea. I know I would crap myself if someone did that to me. Last year I bought one of those big plastic witch's cauldrons and cut a hole in the bottom big enough to fit my hand through. I glued a black rubber glove to the inside of the cauldron so that I can slip my hand through the bottom into the glove. The idea was to put the candy in the cauldron over my gloved hand then when they reach inside the cauldron to help themselves to the candy, my hand would pop up and grab them. I didn't end up doing it last year because most of the kids that came were pretty young. I'll try again this year though. :D
Pumpkins will be carved tomorrow night probably. I usually don't like to do it more than a day or two before Halloween because they will rot, but I have to work this weekend and won't have time. Tonight I'm going to pop in "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" and maybe sample some of the candy, just to make sure it's fresh for the kids on Monday night. ;)

I love your idea with incense around your yard. That's very creative and smart.
When I was a teenager, my friend and I would make a graveyard on the front lawn, hang bodies from trees, and then run a hose from the back of the house onto the roof, then had a sprinker head attached to create...rain on the front of the house onto our graveyard, complete with a strobe light, thunder sound effects. It was really cool. People came from who knows where to check it out. It was fun...and of course mt friend and I would be surprising people from corners and the bushes in the graveyard...generally with axes and butcher knives. So fun.

And a quick pumpkin tip: coat the cut-out areas with Vaseline & it will help it stay fresher. The inside is usually OK since it gets cooked. I can't wait to carve pumkins this year. I found a really cool site for templates:
http://www.zombiepumpkins.com
And no, I didn't pay for the service. I just print out the finished pic (they also have user-submitted pics) & make my own pattern - works pretty well for the simpler designs. This site is linked on the Zombie site, but it's also great (especially the Photos section):

The biggest, best party is tomorrow nite. There are 2 more I know of on Sat. nite...carve pumpkins Sunday (I love to roast the seeds) and then hand out candy Mon. nite. I've got a jack-o-lantern light already up in the front window, and my spooky skeleton curtain on the porch. Mon. nite, I'll put out the motion sensor scary "BOO" sign that makes creepy noises and screams when it's set off.

I think the cone may work better, because they make those little containers for them, so I can hide it in a hoodie if I want or find a way to place it in my shirt...that way my hair (or skin) won't burn. I'm not sure yet...need to look at containers.
Of course you can steal the idea! Have fun with it...and be sure to walk a little funny too...adds to the effect. I will try and post some pics next week. Love to see your pics if you get any too.

Yes - it was the Wild Basin Preserve. I used to work at VTel just across the street from it, and they used our parking lot for visitors, plus we could watch the lights in the woods from our balconies. I went a few times, very scary.
And speaking of pink - I saw an Ellen Degeneres recently where a lady sent a pic of her dressed up as Gum On The Bottom Of A Shoe. She wore a pink tracksuit w/ hoodie & pink face makeup, then glued a basketball shoe to the top of her hood. Hilarious!

That's a pretty good site. I like the Michael Myers pattern they had on that site! I've used patterns from the pumpkin masters kits for several years now. They always come out really good, but some of the patterns are a real pain in the butt and you end up with cramped hands after a while. This year I bought a battery operated pumpkin carving saw! Hopefully that will make it easier.
The vaseline tip is a good one too. I've used it before, but it can get messy in some of the tighter patterns. One year I bought a pumpkin preserve spray, also from pumpkin masters, that worked really well. I tried to order it last year and they told me they no longer make it. I bought a different spray from another compay, but it didn't work as well.

The patterns are fun and really do work well. Another tip - if you cut the main hole and gut your pumpkin from the bottom, you can set it onto the candle that way too!

I am very depressed about this year. I LOVE Halloween (I may love it more than Christmas, to be honest.) But this year hubby and I are both working & won't be home to give out candy. :( I don't think we're going to carve pumpkins this year either. No parties to speak of. I will probably watch some scary movies this weekend. Oh, and Bills vs. Pats on Sunday night, that should be scary. :D
I'm debating if I should even turn on my pumpkin lights or not. I always get annoyed that my neighbors decorate like crazy & light everything up - then they BOTH leave to take their kids trick or treating & there's nobody to hand out candy at their house! Tons of people go to their house because they assume since these people are so into Halloween they must give out good candy, but no. Jerks. So I don't want to be like that.

You should never leave your lights on or decorate your house if you're not going to be home to hand out candy :distress: unless you leave candy outside on the porch for kids to help themselves. That's what we do since Blair and I both take Bronte out, but we live in the country and don't get alot of kids (maybe 8) so we can do this, maybe your neighbourhood has alot of kids and that would'nt work. Then there is always the bad kids who take the whole f**ken bowl
But I repeat - do not leave lights on or pumpkins lit if you are not home! Very confusing for the trick-or-treaters. :D

My grandma used to live in the country, and she did basically the same thing since she was one of those bed-at-sundown types.
She knew most of the kids in the area and would decorate a bag of treats for each of them with their name on it, which she would leave on her porch. Plus, she made a few extras in case the kids brought friends with them, etc. And she always had stuff left over, which we got to eat!

I guess I can stop looking up cheesy rap song lyrics to post, in order to get them stuck in your head and make you sing them all weekend.

Sounds like your grandma used to live in a really nice neighbourhood, like me, not like Paula's :p

I'll be dressed as a shut-in who has to finish writing a judicial opinion for her Family Law class. That's on the weekend. Then, on actual Halloween, I'll be dressed as someone who has to go to her Family Law class and turn the paper in. I'll have that costume on for three hours.
I think it's cool that so many people here who don't even have kids go to so much trouble on Halloween. I'm suprised actually. But then, I've never really liked Halloween all that much. It can be pretty fun, but I find it a little stressful.

Stressful? Halloween? Never. When I was living in SF, I would do the Castro Street/Market St thingy. There were so many house parties...and I'd just crash them. Just stroll right in like I knew everybody, nibble on some snacks and drink more booze. It always, always worked for me. It's so fun being a little trickster and ****ing with people for the night.

I went to the Castro/Market thing once, and it was a drag. It's just a bunch of people on the street, you have to walk and stand up all night, It's hard to get a drink, and you don't really talk to that many people, even though it's insanely crowded. However, it was successful as a spectacle. That part was good. The rest was meh. Crashing parties is a good idea.
And yes, it's stressful for me to have to think of a costume, and then get it together, and then wear it all night. With all the makeup, and the brief clothing, and all that. Too much. Plus, I don't have a car, which makes it more inconvenient.
Sorry, I just don't like Halloween that much. :D
However - my good friend's birthday is November third (she usually wears her Afro wig starting on Halloween and for the whole week. ) so I think some highjinks will ensue around that occasion. :)

That's pretty much what my friends and I do for every Castro St. occasion. This year at Pride I don't think I spent a single dollar on drinks.

OOH - I haven't heard about pumpkin preserve spray - may need to check that out. Of course, they should be fine for 2 days or so since Halloween is Monday.
Did you check out the second site? Some of the most intricate carvings I've ever seen, especially this one:

Yeah, I looked at both sites. That picture you posted is one of the patterns in the latest pumpkin master pattern book I bought. I was thinking about doing it but I think it looks too hard. All those corn kernels!

Cool costume.
I think I'll go as Michael Brown to the Halloween party I'm going to tomorrow. I'll show up late and won't bring any refreshments.

Well, Halloween is over already! This year I got about 20 trick or treaters. The kids from my apartment complex all came in one large group! My pumpkins came out pretty good. Here are some photos I took of them!

Same without flash.

Eye of Newt (AKA Carpal Tunnel)!
And here's a picture of a stuffed witch I put out by the stairs. I had a couple of mini purple spot lights on her. A few kids didn't want to come up the the door because they were afraid to walk near her! I can't say I blame them. I got her a couple of weeks ago, and I had her hanging up in a closet in my living room. I had forgotten she was in there, and every time I went to get the vacuum cleaner out of the closet I would get scared. :p

Well, we ditched work early ("what? you're not feeling well? OK, well you'll have to call back tomorrow, it's Halloween & we're outta here!") so I gave out candy between 6:45 & 8pm. Had about 40 kids come - not bad.
One new peeve of mine - parents who follow their kids in their CARS while they T or T. WTF? Get your lazy ass out of your car & walk with them! It was a gorgeous night, clear & cool but not cold, no rain. God forbid you spend some quality time with your children.

That one took about 2 hours to transfer the pattern and carve. I cleaned out the pumpkin innards the night before, so that saved some time.

Yeah, that's heart breaking! ;) . I bought candy that I "accidentally" forgot to put in the trick-or-treaters bowl. Actually they were mini charleston chews that went straight into my freezer! Sorry your pumpkins got ruined. That sucks!
BTW, the battery operated pumpkin carving saw was worthless! It's too big and hard to control. I used it for less than a minute on the pumpkin king pattern and had to stop and break out the regular ones.
