View Full Version : Run-in with homophobic neighbor

One of our old biddy neighbors (who we'd never even met before today) rang our doorbell today and proceeded to lecture my husband about a sign we have in our yard. (I wasn't home at the time, so I don't know the full extent of what was said, just the particularly wacko stuff!)
Our yard sign says to vote against a proposed amendment to our state's constitution, which would define marraige as a "union between one man and one woman". The amendment also states that anything "resembling a marriage or identical to marriage" won't be recognized by the state. Mind you, we already had a "defense of marriage" act defining marriage this way pass 2 years ago. But that's not good enough for the homophobes. They feel the need to write bigotry into our state constitution to prevent any "activist, homo-loving" judges from overturning the ban on gay marriages. Furthermore, if this amendment passes, it will raise many questions about whether it would affect domestic partner benefits, etc., for gay couples.
So anyway, the old biddy rings our doorbell and when my husband answers the door, she tells him that our sign is wrong, and that it should say to "vote FOR" the amendment. She then proceeds to babble on about Sodom and Gomorrah (sp?), and about how gays are an abomination to God. She also tells him that she read about some letter that "the homosexuals" sent to congress, saying that they're going to come into hetero couples' homes and rape the husbands in their bathtubs, and that they're going to stalk kids in movie theatres and turn them gay! She ends her rambling by saying that "they're (gays) coming to get us"!
It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant and openly bigoted some people can be. The gall of her to actually try to come into our house to pass her moral judgments on us! I wonder how many more of these freaks I'll have to deal with over the next 2 weeks until election day?! (Or until someone runs down our sign, whichever comes first.)

When I was traveling too see Stevie this summer, I was driving through Mississippi, and I pulled into this gas station, and as I was leaving, this truck full of Jethroe's pulled up and I heard one of them say "Hey, look at that guys sticker on the back of his car, dont that mean he's queer?" I have a rainbow triangle on the back of my car. Needless to say I hightailed it outta there.....

No, I didn't stand there... my husband did! I wasn't home at the time.
I had the same reaction as you... I would have told her to get the f*ck off of my property, and would have slammed the door in her face. My husband's reasoning, though, was that you should always listen to what your enemies have to say... so you can use it against them later! But I'd rather have the pleasure of telling them where to go!

Isn't it sad that in the year 2005, we have to be afraid of using our freedom of speech? I have some anti-Bush bumper stickers on the back of my car. I fear for my life everyday since I moved here, driving around with those on my car. This is a concealed weapons state, after all! Before I worked in the corporate offices, I worked as a book manager in one of the stores. During the 2004 election, I had a display of politically themed books, most were of a liberal slant, but that was because there were more books published against Bush than for. My poor staff and I got soooo many complaints. I would always counter with the argument that no matter who is in power, there will always be more opposition books and that no one complained when Clinton was in office and every other book was slandering him.
One guy had the nerve to call the radio and tv station and complain that I censored books because I was sold out of that Swift Boat book. There I was on the news holding up my reservation list to prove I was not keeping people from reading whatever they chose to.

Mind you, I'm not about to take the bumper stickers off my car. In fact, I may get some more! But I tend to shy away from being overly confrontational when I'm driving, especially after the time my car got hit with a slurpie by a rude driver that I had flipped her off! I'm afraid that with my luck, if I get too confrontational with a driver here, I'll get by a bullet rather than a slurpie!

I'm sure she was raised in a totally different time era. My grandmother doesn't agree with mixed marriages or anything of that nature. When she tells me about family members or friends, I just nod because I don't wanna argue with my 82 year old Nanny. Of course, I don't believe what she does, but I know she was raised back in the teens-20's and 30's. She ain't gonna change her mind about anything. I love and respect her, but I don't have to agree with her.
I just cannot believe the balls that some people have in going to someone's home to say something like that.

My grandma was the same way. (She passed away a few years back, at the age of 92). She never met my husband, since by the time I was dating him, she was pretty senile and in a nursing home 800 miles away. But I'm sure if she had met him, considering her state of mind at the time, she probably would have thought he was a "servant" and asked him to bring her a glass of water or something. And if she'd met him while she still had her mind intact, she would have been totally disgusted. So yeah, I can definitely see your point.
The sad thing is that there are many people our age that feel that way as well. Unfortunately, some families continue to pass it down from generation to generation. Kind of like those girl singers in the other thread. :distress:

There is still plenty of resistance to interracial couples. It is very sad. The last guy I dated was black and he said that he hadn't met most of the fathers of the white girls he dated. We also got some very awful looks when we went to dinner one nite, some people are just jerks.

I agree. When I was growing up, my Dad and I were at the Waldorf Astoria (I have been going there for decades  ) and we saw this white guy holding this black girl's hand on the escalator. I thought nothing of it other than I had not seen that before - then, my Dad says "son you can screw your maid all you want at home, but don't bring her out in public" - I was horrified at the time and still am to this day. To his credit, my dad has come a very very long way since then -- and thank goodness.

   OMG!! I needed a good laugh. What the f*ck are these people thinking?!
We just hired a new guy at our restaurant, to work in the kitchen. Well, his first day, he came in wearing a rainbow bracelet. My God, you'd think he walked up to every guy in the kitchen and slipped them all the tongue! Of course, they all banded together in the corner eyeing him like he was a vampire or something. I'm sure the comments went a little like this, in redneck-ese: "Well, I'll tell ya one thang right now. The first time he grabs my ass, he's gonna know right damn quick I ain't no ****in' fag!"
(By the way, we don't all speak like this. There's a world of difference between a southerner/southern accent and a redneck!)
Forsyth County used to have a sign that said "No Ni**ers Allowed" - Of course, the servants had a day pass. Nice and Christian weren't they Never understood that philosophy that's it's OK to be served by a black person but they can't spend money there. Reminds me of that line from Fried Green Tomatos where Cicely Tyson is talking about the white sheriff: "Don't make no common sense, won't sit next to a colored child, but he eats eggs-shoot right out a chicken's ass!"
My grandmother's like that too. I recently took her on a trip from North Carolina to her home state of Kentucky. It was a looooong ride. When she starts in on 'the blacks' and 'the gays', I gotta just toon her out. My mom told me the other day what she said: "You know, I don't think Angie likes some of the things I say. When I start to talk, she just keeps turning that radio up." I thought I was being more subtle than that.
She also had high hopes that my uncle, my father's brother, would marry one of her daughters, so he could be an 'official' member of the family...until she found out he was gay. She still has high hopes though, that he will 'turn back', as she calls it.

Wow. If my neighbor came at me like that, Katie bar the door. Your husband gets points for restraint. I wouldn't have used aggressive violent language. Never. But trust me, I have to tell people to go get themselves f*cked on the phone all the time. And they never know until they hung up what I really meant. A taped conversation would sound like I was the most polite, professional man on earth. Studio heads and expensive attorneys would have to listen to the tapes and I cannot incriminate myself. Your husband has the patience of Job.

Wow, bless you for sticking to your guns in Texas! No, that pun wasn't intended! I can't believe the nerve of that woman, ugh! And that story she told, do people really believe that BS? Jeez.
There is still plenty of resistance to interracial couples. It is very sad. The last guy I dated was black and he said that he hadn't met most of the fathers of the white girls he dated. We also got some very awful looks when we went to dinner one nite, some people are just jerks.
I don't know how I would do in a red state. I have that feeling the sky is falling already, I think I would figure it was the end of the world.
Thank you! :xoxo:
For the most part, people don't look twice at us. But we do definitely get our share of dirty looks. Unfortunately, there still are plenty of people who think interracial couples are disgusting. The last place we lived in the Chicago area had it's fair share of narrow minded people. One time, my husband was at the grocery store with our son, who was about 2 yrs old at the time. My son is very light skinned, so many people don't realize he's mixed. Some old guy came up to my husband and said something to the effect of "It's amazing, you can take a white child out of his natural environment, and put him in a Negro environment, and he will take on the characteristics of a Negro." My husband responded "Yes, it is all about the the environment you're raised in, isn't it?" Of course, that totally went over the guys head! My husband also has had teenagers in that same grocery store walk past him and sarcastically say to him "What's up, homey?" Unbelievable!
Just goes to show, though... as much as I bitch and moan about moving from a Blue state to a Red state, it can happen anywhere! We actually got more of that type of stuff up North than we do here. But overall, politically, it is definitely way more conservative where we are now. After what happened with the old biddy yesterday, we figure having the sign in our yard may show us who the most narrow-minded people in our neighborhood are. Then we won't associate with them!

Believe me, there are times I've been tempted!
Seriously, though, this has been a very ironic year for me...
First, Bush gets reelected, and I'm ready to pack up and move to Canada. Instead, we end up moving down here (the middle of Bush country) because my husband, who was laid off from his job 3 years ago, has been working a consulting contract down here for over a year, which he expects to last several more months. (He had been unable to find anything up North.) Since I was able to get a transfer with my job, we made the move. Then within 2 weeks after moving here, the project my husband is supposed to work on gets cancelled, and there's no other work for him, so the company ends his contract! We also discover, thanks to an article forwarded to us by a friend, that the town we chose to live in is one of the top 5 most conservative cities in the U.S.! So it's really no surprise to me that we were visited by the old biddy yesterday, and I fully expect plenty more of that before the election.
On the upside, I did find a Democrats group, and attended a meeting Saturday. I had to introduce myself during the meeting, and when I joked that I was at the meeting to meet the other 3 Democrats in the area, I was chastised and informed that there were actually 68,000 Dems in the county that had voted in the last election. Considering that I'm from Chicago, that doesn't sound like a lot. But, it was about 67,990 more than I thought there were in my county! I also got to meet the Democratic Congressional candidate for my district, that will be running in 2006. I was pretty impressed, and think he may actually have a shot at winning.

Believe me, I wouldn't have been as restrained as my husband! But it was probably a good thing it was him rather than me who had to deal with her. I tend to get very emotional in situations like that, and she probably would have left there thinking I'd proved her point about nasty old liberals! My husband is used to dealing with people like that, and he doesn't want to give them the satisfaction of "proving their point" about "people like him".

But it doesnt really bother me. Whenever someone asks me that, I usually tell them I'll be the first man to be able to bear my boyfriends child. That usually shuts em up.;)

I'd make like Brit Hume's son and stick a gun in my mouth. No you wouldn't. Danny wouldn't either. I mean, yes, I really do hate so many things about the South but just living in the South is not the worst thing in the world. I have problems and some result from living here but there are many people out there who have far more severe problems than I do and have a hell of a lot more to whine about than I do. There are people who have reasons to think of putting guns to their heads; as someone who lives in the South, I don't. I don't know what it is that y'all imagine goes on. I doubt that my daily life differs that dramatically from yours. Sure, this is not the place for me or you, socially and politically, but don't you think you were being just a little presumptuous and melodramatic?
