In honor of Halloween, what is your favorite horror movie?

Mine is "Halloween"! I love the creepy music for some reason. Nothing will top that movie. I dressed up as Michael Myers for Halloween last year. That mask scares the crap out of people!

I also love Child's Play (Chucky), the Scream trilogy, The Birds, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Hand that Rocks the Craddle. I have a bunch actually! I just love scary movies! I really hate Psycho for some reason. I've never been able to sit through it all the way.

Generally I dont like scary movies, because they sit on my mind. I dwell on them, cant sleep at night, that sort of nonsense. Probably the one that scares me the most is the original B&W 'Night of the Living Dead'. *shudder*

Das Boot. :p
Honestly, that movie is do damn agonizingly tense, claustrophobic, and emotionally draining I haven't watched the whole thing in five years.

As for an actual horror movie? Probably Alien. That movie can still freak me out something bad. I just have a thing for movies that take in small, wet, dark places. :D

The Silence of the Lambs - hands down - it puts the lotion on its skin

Lesser would include:

The Exorcist - THIS SOW IS MINE
The Shining - freaky shiitte (better book IMO)
Nosferatu - very close to the top and it was done in 1922

also

Jacob's Ladder

The Exorcist, most definitely. It's one of the only horror movies that can still truly creep me out if I get into it.

Black Christmas! I think that is what it's called.

Or the one that was made in the 1970's about the group that kills a girl in the woods and then the parents of that girl end up killing them! What is that called! I remember a scene where the mom gives the man a blowjob and bites his c*ck off!... :OUCH:

I also like Saw

and House of 1000 corpses.

Great one. I agree and I just added it to my list before I read your post. This film scares the crap out of me. Everything about it. The camera angles, the killers POV, the setting, the phone calls...

I liked it better than Halloween and Black Christmas really was the film that started the whole hack and slash genre.

I've heard that! That's really cool that you played it on stage. Wow...I'm impressed. I hear the book has a totally different ending.

But the movie is till creepy...so eerie...the sounds, that one attack where she floats over his bed. The ending was great in the film. But like I said, i hear the book and play is different in the end.

Halloween - (just before Halloween night, Geoffrey and I walk down the street to where the houses and neighborhood from this movie are {Orange Grove} - I can't go there on Hallowee night, it's too scary.)

and

The Shining - (you're right, Jason- the book is waayyyy better and wayyyy scarier)

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre used to be scary, but it ain't that big anymore.

There's a movie out there about a shut down insane asylum and they filmed it in the actual shut down insane asylum that the movie was based on/created about. I can't remember the title, but it was chilling.

A family on vacation who get stranded in the desert after a car accident and get stalked by an inbred clan of cannibals. It hasn't aged very well, but there are some genuinely scary and disturbing sections that are still effective. They just remade it, but it hasn't come out yet.

Oh my word, that scene where the worker who's afraid of the dark is running through the tunnel as each light goes out, one after the other? I'm still scarred from that scene. Christ.

It was so weird to actually see INSIDE the asylum. It was definitely as scary as I had imagined, that's for sure. Northampton State Hospital is another one that scares me. Stir Of Echoes

Oh man, this movie stayed with me for a long time. I used to live in a big house, and every morning when I would walk down the stairs, through the livingroom, then through the diningroom to get to the kitchen (to get my coffee), I just knew that girl was standing behind me. I would run back upstairs with coffee in hand as fast as I could!

Phantasm

I vaguely remeber this movie. I know I saw it when I was little and it scared the HELL out of me.

I love scary movies and love almost all that have been posted here. There was another movie I saw as a child that messed with me but I can't remember the name of it. It was about a man (piano player, I think) whose hand was chopped off. The hand would crawl around and attack people. For years (Okay, to this day and I'm 37 years old) I could not sleep with my hands out of the blankets). Does anyone rememebr this?

I thought The Ring was really scary. I have major problems with scary dead kids. The little girls in The Shining were what did me in with that movie.

I remember that movie...black and white right? one real bad scene was when it strangled a man while he was driving. Was it called The Thing?

that reminds me, there was an old Vincent Price movie called The Tingler that scared me as a child....and there was another movie about this really creepy octopus monster that lived in a wall....dont remember much about it except that ONE EYE looking at everyone when it got exposed! ARRGH!
Some of those old movies were far better (I dont mean the campy ones!)
I found a review of the Tingler:

THE TINGLER
Unrated (PG these days)
Copyright 1959 William Castle Productions.
Reviewed a long time ago.

Warren - Vincent Price! Pathologist who has been studying fear and its effect on the human body. The sharpness of his scalpel is only matched by his razor wit.
Isabel - Warren's cheating wife, she hates being married to a man not drawn to parties and social events.
David - Warren's assistant and a good guy, worries at times that the doctor might go too far.
Lucy - David's girlfriend and Isabel's younger sister.
Oliver - Unhappy man, helps his wife run an old theater, but does not like being married to a spinster.
Martha - Oliver's deaf and mute wife who has a serious phobia about blood, in addition to constantly washing her hands and making sure her safe is locked. Dies of fright.
The Tingler - Creature that feeds on fear and lives inside the human body. The one removed from Martha's corpse looks like a disgusting centipede.

Films based on crazy scientific premises (not that I critique any of those) are usually something I find easy to poke fun at. However, after watching this one for only a few minutes I had already suspended belief, entirely willing to go with the idea of a parasite living along my spine; a creature capable of killing me unless those very tensions we experience, in moments of terror, are screamed away.

We begin with a humorous introduction by William Castle, he gives us that trademark wry smile while talking about how scared we shall be watching his film. Then the grand showman hints at "Percepto" and members of the audience experiencing the Tingler sensation. Theaters had some seats set up to give the reclining watcher a mild electric shock, sort of a "tingling" along your spine! Imagine it, as a youngster, watching this film on a Saturday afternoon when suddenly a jolt makes you jump in the seat! Popcorn flies everywhere and friends wonder what in the heck your problem is. Who is going to sell the idea of electrocuting the audience these days? Surely, I was born twenty-five years too late.

Warren's duties as a coroner for Death Row bring him into contact with Oliver (whose brother-in-law was fried in the chair) and Martha. From idle conversation the disillusioned husband learns of Warren's belief that a person can die of fear, giving him the perfect chance to dispose of Martha. Assisted by the patented "hand reaching around the door" and a bathtub full of blood (in color!) his plan works and the poor lady is killed by her own terror.

Oddly enough if anyone in this film should want to kill off their spouse, it would be the good doctor. Isabel flounces her infidelity in Warren's face several times. He always catches her stealing kisses in the front yard or notices a strange tie clip left astray, she is lucky he does not take more drastic action.

Something happened a few paragraphs back that was important... ...oh, Martha died! Warren performs a spontaneous autopsy to remove the huge Tingler, its growth unchecked by screaming due to her voiceless nature. The actual removal is performed behind a screen and watching that ghastly shadow being pulled from a woman's lifeless body allows one's imagination to run wild.

Of course the Tingler manages to escape and cause panic in a theater - much like the one the audience was in. Now, as Price urges the audience to "Scream! Scream for your lives!" the projector is turned off and electric current is applied to those lucky patrons. After a few moments the thing is paralyzed by screaming and the interactive part of the film ends. The Tingler can now be returned to the host body (well, corpse) where the characters believe it will naturally expire.

The film keeps you guessing at a few points (hats off for not spelling everything out letter by letter), in fact I am still not certain Warren had nothing to do with the mute lady's death. Wouldn't that be delicious? He used Oliver as an unknowing patsy all along, having guessed the husband's scheme and providing a helping hand with the mysterious injection.

Watch it without knowing anything, the effect will be even scarier. If you have the Independent Film Channel, it's on Saturday night. Hopefully it's the director's cut, though, because the edited American version is ass.
Especially since it's not intended as a horror movie, but a look into a way of life for this culture of people. Yikes.

Ooh, good one. That's another one that really freaks me out. Argento is pretty spotty for me, but Phenomena and Suspiria are horrifying.
Yeah...Jennifer Connelly is so cute in it. I love it when she summons all those insects in front of those other girl students and says "I love you. I love all of you."

Did you know that Neil LaBute is remaking it with Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn as the leader of the cult? I'm generally not big on remakes, but this has the potential to be phenomenal.

YES!!! That ****er creeped me OUT!!!!! Especially the freaky after-takes with that dude with the mask that they were going to interject in the movie but didn't have enough time.
That "dude" is a black woman. That's the main reason they cut it. Audiences were confused with this sub-plot. Audiences thought that was Mary Hobbs (the woman in the sessions). But it was quite obvious this black woman was just a squatter at Danvers Hospital and witnessed all the things going on with Gordon and his workers and was the one who would end up killing Gordon.

They had some nice shots of her creeping around that place, to bad they couldn't use it. I think it was more disturbing to not know what will happen to Gordon specifically. But yeah, praise to the extras.

Blair Witch scared the piss out of me when I first saw it at the theater. Of course, all my friends made fun of me. That next summer when we went camping, they bundled sticks together & put them outside my tent.

Saw - can't believe nobody mentioned this yet, maybe I missed it. So. Scary. I'm excited about the sequel, but I don't know if I can handle seeing in in the theater.

Silence of the Lambs - one of the few movies ever that gave me nightmares.

Paperhouse is on the same night as The Wicker Man and, imo, it's another must see. It's been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid and it's disturbing. Still creeps me out to this day. That movie (and doll) scared the pee out of me when I was a kid....I have a doll collection, that used to be kept in an antique secretary desk, w/ a creaky door on it. I'm always curious about horror films, but don't care for them much. I do like The Shining and even though it's more funny than scary...my fave horror movie is The Lost Boys. Jason Patric as a hot vampire, yes please.

I watched that Bravo countdown of Scariest Movie Moments and one in particular had me peeing a little. LOL I cannot remember the name of the movie, but maybe someone can help me out. The scene was a woman in a room (bedroom, I think it was) and all of a sudden, a skinny, old man came out from behind the door and walked RIGHT AT THE CAMERA (I got chills just typing that. LOL) and walked out the doorway around the corner. I sesly wet myself. The Wicker Man....I went to imdb.com to read about it and wow, people's comments about the movie went into this Britain versus America thread. LOL Sounds like a freaky movie and that was on Bravo's countdown too.

Oh, Christy, the first time I saw it, I could barely get it out of my mind enough to sleep that night. The last half hour of that movie hits you like a ton of bricks. If anyone ever decides to pick it up at the video store, DON'T read about it beforehand because it will spoil the climax terribly. I remember when I was little, watching a movie on TV with my mom about these people that lived in this house and they couldn't get out. When they opened the doors/windows, there was no way out...like something in front of the doors/windows. Anyways, I remember them being really hot (sweating, I mean, not sexy hot. I actually think the name of the movie is The Beast with Five Fingers....
it seems to have been a fairly popular theme as there are a few "hands of Orlac" movies made (a piano player who loses his hands and has the hands of a killer grafted on, then goes on killing sprees)
The Michael Caine movie was made in the mid-80's and the movie I remember was made during black and white television era....

Hmm, no- I definitely remember the hand itself crawling around killing people. Let me look online and see what I can find.

was it called "the hand" w/ michael caine?, we are the same age & i totally remember that movie, his hand got cut off when he was waving a car by or something while he was passenger in a car, that hand just crawled all around killing people, i saw it once a couple of yrs back & it didn't scare me as bad, but when i was younger i would dream about that hand:eek: ~[/B]

I looked this one up and it's too late- 1981. I saw MY hand movie when I was just a little thing, probably in the mid to late 70's.

Nope you were right the first time.

The Beast with Five Fingers
An invalid concert pianist dies, leaving a will that does not include his personal secretary Hilary Cummins (Peter Lorre) as a beneficiary. Furious, the left-out yes-man cuts off a hand from the corpse and plots revenge. Unfortunately for Hilary, the hand inherits a life of its own and relentlessly stalks the wild-eyed Lorre as he flees in vain. Special effects keep the audience jumping as they dread the next appearance of this gruesome walking hand.

Oops, it was irishgirl who came up with that one.

You mean a killer who just refuses to die could happen. Huh?

All this Saw buzz got me thinking.

Have any of you seen 'The Cube?' It's a good one...and if so, Saw ripped it off a bit. But hey, what's new.

Could it possibly be "And Now The Screaming Starts?" I have this on DVD.

OMG - on par with "Howard" (1957) and "Trog" (poor Joan - she looked more frightening than the gorilla like thing  )

As a kid, I was creeped out by The Birds and by Don't Look Now. I was so afraid that the birds were going to fly into my house and peck my eyes out that I slept with the windows closed all summer (we didn't have air conditioning). I don't remember much about Don't Look Now, other than there was some creepy dead kid that wore a red plastic rain coat.

As an adult, the Blair Witch Project completely freaked me out. I wanted to go stand in the middle of a four lane highway after watching that movie! I couldn't sleep for days without seeing the last frame of the movie in my head where that kid is standing in the corner.

A side note . . . when I was last traveling in MD with my boyfriend, he read the map wrong on the way to Harper's Ferry and we ended up in Burketsville!!! I was glad to get the hell out of there!

Last House On The Left I think

I don't like scary movies but my two fav's are Halloween and Rosemary's Baby.

I lived in Moorestown NJ growing up. Haddonfield NJ is like 15 minutes away.
My dad loved to bring out the map and show me how close Micheal Myers was to my house. ( In the movie he lives in Haddonfield I guess)

Has anyone ever seen the movie Prince Of Darkness? that was kind of a low budget film that came out in 1990, and it's right near the top of my list.

Hahaha. Very funny.

With that in mind, Titanic was horrific torture. An absolute horror of a movie. My cuz and I saw this way back when it was released in theaters...we were in a sold out show, stuck in the center section and couldn't leave without disturbing the crying saps. Ugh. Complete torture.

We were the only ones giggling. I'll take A Night To Remember anyday over this sinking ship.

Requiem for a Dream scares me, although it's not really a "sacry movie" as we're talking about them.

I was waiting for you to pop up and mention that one. I cry just a little bit when I think of that movie. Especially Burstyn's monologue about loneliness. *weeps*

And if the finale of that flick doesn't qualify it as a scary movie, I don't know what a scary movie is.

Watch it without knowing anything, the effect will be even scarier. If you have the Independent Film Channel, it's on Saturday night. Hopefully it's the director's cut, though, because the edited American version is ass.

Watched it on IFC last night. Cree-pee. I got chills when they first showed the thing. I had already read about it, unfortunately, but it was freaky nonetheless. Christopher Lee....is a trip.

ETA: I also watched half of Paperhouse...woah. That is all kinds of weird! I wanna see the whole thing!

That part doesn't scare me. However, the part where Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce) has his brilliant monologue about ageing and tears pages out of the book is truly scary and disturbing.

Paperhouse rocks! One of my favorite movies. Did you get to the point where Anna draws her father, but doesn't like how he came out and scribbles over him before throwing it away? It's scary as hell after that.
