View Full Version : CDs for all seasons
I'm sure lots of folks around here like making mix CDs for themselves and others. So why not a thread about them? Threads about things that people like are fun, right? So, what do you make mix CDs for, and what are some of your favorites that you've made?
It's about that time for me to bring out my Fall Mix that I made for myself last year. Most of the songs don't necessarily have anything to do with autumntime, but they put me in a very fall mood, chill in the air, leaves falling down, all that crap. My tracklist:
1. The White Stripes - Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground
2. Nico - These Days
3. The Smiths - Cemetery Gates
4. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Little Dawn
5. Cat Stevens - The Wind
6. Tom Waits - Hold On
7. The Rolling Stones - Tumbling Dice
8. The Shins - Pink Bullets
9. David Bowie with Queen - Under Pressure
10. Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hands
11. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Powderfinger
12. Todd Rundgren - Can We Still Be Friends?
13. Smashing Pumpkins - Lily (My One And Only)
14. Fleetwood Mac - I Know I'm Not Wrong
15. Johnny Cash - Wichita Lineman
16. Temple Of The Dog - Hunger Strike
17. Wilco - Wishful Thinking
On paper (or on a computer screen), I think it looks like a pretty frantic collection, going through so many different bands from different time periods with very different styles, but I think it really works. I'm all about the sequencing when I make a CD, trying to find those songs that suddenly, when you put them back to back, illuminate each other in a way you might not have thought about them before. Like what Cameron Crowe does with a movie soundtrack.
I've got a great (well, I love it, anyway) Spring Mix as well, but I'll post the tracklist to that tomorrow after others have hopefully added some responses of their own. Go nuts, people!

person myself, but I do have discs that I consider my seasonal discs:
Winter-Disc #2 of the 1990 Led Zeppelin boxed set
Fall-Keeper of the Seven Keys-Helloween
I never bother to try to find discs that are considered my Spring & Summer discs since those are my least 2 favorite seasons of the year.

Thanks, Richard! That looks like a really fun mix. I love the idea of "Werewolves of London" into "Africa." Awesome opening three tracks, too.
By the way, I think the actual title of that Rod Stewart song is "Young Turks."

Thank you! I love your mix too.
That Hot Chocolate remix is so juicy. It's actually a remix with both 'Sexy Thing' and 'Everyone's A Winner, Baby.' So fun. This CD has made the rounds. It gets passed along to lots of friends and my family in Portugal. They love it.
Funny about 'Young Turks.' I sucked it down off the net and never bothered to retag the file info. Nice catch!

I'm definitely saving your mix and making a point of tracking down some of those songs!

It's just one of those tracks that constantly gets mislabelled, since I don't think Rod actually ever sings the phrase "Young Turks" at any point during the song, and definitely not during the chorus.
I think there are a lot of people whose favorite Fleetwood Mac song is "Thunder Only Happens When It's Raining"...

I make a lot of mix or compilation cds, but not for particular seasons. I tend to put my favorite songs by the same artist or from the same genre together, mostly so that I can listen on my discman (yes... that's right a portable cd player, I do not own an IPod or any similar device) on the bus ride to work and while doing chores before the office opens. Lately I've been listening to a compilation of songs from a certain artist whom you're all probably sick of hearing about. But I've also recently listened to the following compilation:
1. "Seven Nation Army" The White Stripes
2. "Rock Your Body" Justin Timberlake
3. "Float On" Modest Mouse
4. "Play" Jennifer Lopez
5. "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" Fuel
6. "Roses" Outkast
7. "Shine" Collective Soul
8. "New Sensation" INXS
9. "Man in the Box" Alice in Chains
10. "This Love" Maroon 5
11. "Whenever, Wherever" Shakira
12. "Unwell" Matchbox 20
13. "Hella Good" No Doubt
14. "Escape" Enrique Iglesias
15. "Dolphin's Cry" Live
16. "Get the Party Started" Pink
17. "I Belong to You" Lenny Kravitz
18. "Carry On Dancing" Savage Garden
19. "Ode to My Car" Adam Sandler (I know... WTF? I hate AS, but I love this song so I had to put it somewhere.)
Oh and here's an old mix I just discovered and am listening to now (some duplicates from previous list):
1. "Let's Get it Started" Black Eyed Peas
2. "New Sensation" INXS
3. "Float On" Modest Mouse
4. "Make It Better (Forget About Me" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
5. "Lonely and Gone" Montgomery Gentry
6. "Hey Ya!" Outkast
7. "I Will Survive" Gloria Gaynor
8. "Seven Nation Army" The White Stripes
9. "There Goes My Girl" Walter Egan
10. "Anybody Seen My Baby?" The Rolling Stones
11. "Rhythm of My Heart" Rod Stewart
12. "I Hate Myself for Loving You" Joan Jett
13. "Somebody's Watching Me" Rockwell
14. "The River of Dreams" Billy Joel
15. "The Man Who Loves Women" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
16. "Rock Your Body" Justin Timberlake
17. "What You Waiting For?" Gwen Stefani
18. "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind" Lindsey Buckingham
19. "Keep Me In Your Heart" Warren Zevon
How's that for one really random collection?

Oh man, that is delicious. It's a perfect morning for some Hot Chocolate here. This remix is so in-your-head! It makes me think of "Sledgehammer"-era Peter Gabriel, in the best way possible. Thanks for sharing! "You Sexy Thing" is actually on my Spring Mix, which goes a little something like this:

It's okay. I was once like you.

That's a really awesome opening three. I can imagine that does the job of pumping you up to go to work!
18. "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind" Lindsey Buckingham
19. "Keep Me In Your Heart" Warren Zevon
Oh lord, the end of this mix would make me cry.
The other favorite - songs that all had "Rain" in the title:
No "Blame It on The Rain" by Milli Vanilli?!
I know someone who does this a lot, making mixes of songs that all have a certain word in the title, it can make for some really interesting compilations!

Yeah, I guess I figured that once I had pumped myself up (I try to use music instead of caffeine to wake up in the morning) I'd depress the hell out of myself as a reminder that it is work that I'm going to.

I make a soundtrack playlist for myself every week or so on iTunes- whatever I'm really digging on, and it often either sets the tone for that period of time or reflects it. I never worry about repeating artists multiple times or anything like that.
This is the most current one:
Life on Mars?- David Bowie
Yellow- Coldplay
Bring It On Home To Me- Sam Cooke
Fade Into You- Mazzy Star
Stars and Boulevards- Augustana
Tangerine- Led Zeppelin
You Send Me- Sam Cooke
Life on Mars? Seu Jorge
Breathe Me- Sia
Orange Sky- Alexi Murdoch
Soul Meets Body- Death Cab for Cutie
Long Time Coming- Delays
My Winding Wheel- Ryan Adams
Rest In Peace- Spike/BTVS soundtrack (shut. up.)
Cupid- Sam Cooke
I Hear The Bells- Mike Doughty
Wonderful World- Sam Cooke
Dice- Finley Quaye
Nocturn- Kate Bush
In The Sun- Joseph Arthur
Caught by the River- Doves
Come Pick Me Up- Ryan Adams

That's an awesome mix, I love all the Sam Cooke stuff, and Seu Jorge's "Life on Mars?" is great. (He's got a new solo album out that I have heard good things about.)
(And don't worry, I've got the "Once More, With Feeling" soundtrack too, though I always wish the guitars on "Rest In Peace" were more in-your-face...)

If you're talking about Cru, it IS great. Also, if you like Sam, Sony just put out a couple of great reissues- a really good remastered Night Beat and Live at the Harlem Square Club, which is FANTASTIC.
I'm with you on the guitars. Spike singing just gives me a girl boner. Can't help it.

I haven't made a mix CD for ages but the last one I made did have a seasonal theme. I called it the Super Sunny Spring mix and it was for a fellow Wes Anderson obsessive. Here's the tracklisting.

Kimiko's Dream House - Mark Lanegan
Jolene - Ray LaMontagne

now we are friends forever. That is one of the best singles EVER made. And soooooooo "fall-ish".
I was in the car with my friend yesterday and Hunger Strike came on and immediately I began singing the Chris Cornell part and he did the Eddie Vedder part. It was so funny, but why do I always end up being Chris Cornell?

The best part about singing along to Eddie Vedder is that you don't have to know any of the words.
By the way, Sharon, if you do BitTorrent, there's what looks like a fantastic Neil Diamond concert from LA earlier this month up on DimeADozen.org . I'm downloading it right now, however slowly.
