It was a joke. Seeing how one of their broadcasters called for the assassination of Bush.

And yes I do think it is a bad thing. That place, which is going under fast (pretty much in financial hell if Soros and others do not continue to donate) does nothing but cater to the few left-wing extremists who listen to it. Most main stream Democrats would fall over dead if they heard half of what is said on there.

Randi Rhodes (http://weblog.theviewfromthecore.com/2004_05/ind_003570.html) has a past for using such rhetoric (http://www.nydailynews.com/05-12-2004/news/politics/story/192675p-166266c.html)

May 2004 (http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2004/5/12/153908.shtml)

Comparing Bush and his family to the Corleones of "Godfather" fame, Air America host Randi Rhodes reportedly unleashed this zinger during her Monday night broadcast: "Like Fredo, somebody ought to take him out fishing and phuw. "
Rhodes then imitated the sound of a gunshot.

In "Godfather II," Fredo Corleone is executed by brother Michael at the end of the film

And of course we have our wonderful sympathetic profiles of Rhodes, as the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A3763-2004Sep7?language=printer) did last fall. See how the writer nonchalantly mentions the skit. Now, compare that with the fate of conservative talk show hosts punished or canned (http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/1/5/232024.shtml)for controversial speech.

This is true mostly because you are well read and difficult to surprise. You have researched many of the subjects you are passionate about. And while we are on the topic of Air America, let's look at how lousy their past ratings have been.

- Air America’s flagship station, WLIB-AM in New York, garnered a 1.2 share in the latest quarter (http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/DetailsPage.aspx?MID=184&RY=2005&RQ=1&MP=1&OTHER=2&MN=New%20York&MS=NY&MR=1&12P=15283100&UP=2/28/2005&SU=CM&BPER=17.5&HPER=19.1&OPER=&NSD=3/28/2005&CE=0), down 0.1 from the year-ago period. By comparison, WABC-AM, New York's leading conservative station, garnered a 3.8 share, up 0.1 from the year-ago period. WOR-AM, another conservative station, posted a 2.1 share, down 0.1 from the year-earlier period.

- Air America’s Boston station, WKOX-AM, got a tiny 0.6 share in the latest quarter (http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/DetailsPage.aspx?MID=35&RY=2005&RQ=1&MP=1&OTHER=2&MN=Boston&MS=MA&MR=9&12P=3878000&UP=3/1/2005&SU=CM&BPER=6.1&HPER=6.1&OPER=&NSD=3/29/2005&CE=0), compared to a 4.3 share at WTKK-FM and a 4.0 share at WRKO-AM, both of which are conservative.

- Air America’s San Diego station, KLSD-AM, got a 1.9 share (http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/DetailsPage.aspx?MID=227&RY=2005&RQ=1&MP=1&OTHER=2&MN=San%20Diego&MS=CA&MR=17&12P=2483900&UP=3/1/2005&SU=CM&BPER=5.7&HPER=23.9&OPER=&NSD=3/29/2005&CE=0), up from 1.5 in the year-ago quarter. A respectable performance. By comparison, KOGO-AM, San Diego's conservative station, garnered a 5.5 share, up from 5.2 in the year-earlier period.

- Air America’s Philadelphia affiliate, WHAT-AM, garnered a 0.8 market share in the latest quarter (http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/DetailsPage.aspx?MID=198&RY=2005&RQ=1&MP=1&OTHER=2&MN=Philadelphia&MS=PA&MR=6&12P=4334000&UP=3/1/2005&SU=CM&BPER=19.4&HPER=4.7&OPER=&NSD=3/29/2005&CE=0), down 0.1 from the year-earlier period. By comparison, Philadelphia's conservative station, WPHT-AM, posted a 4.1 market share, up smartly from 3.2 in the year-earlier period.

- In Providence, Maloney reports, ratings at WHJJ-AM plunged after it replaced its conservative line-up with Air America, from a 3.5 share of the 12 and older audience to a 2.6 share. Meanwhile, Maloney says Providence's conservative station, WPRO-AM, “saw a surge during the survey period from a 4.4 to a 5.1 audience share.”

I'm sure some of Air America's supporters will point to particular shows that are successful with particular demographic subgroups. But so what if Al Franken is beating Rush Limbaugh among left-handed male eskimos between the ages of 35 and 54? The Arbitron numbers leave no doubt about the general trend: Air America is no match for conservative talk radio. Even in San Diego, where Air America is doing decently, its ratings are only a little more than one third that of the conservative competition.

In the past, Air America's defenders could argue with some justification that its low ratings were the inevitable result of starting from square one. But Air America's flagship station, WLIB-AM, has now been on the air for a full year. As Maloney suggests, it is no longer credible to blame the station's mediocre performance on the fact that it is new:

WLIB has now had a full year, a generous amount of time in broadcasting, to build an audience and figures are still flat compared with the previous niche Caribbean format the station featured. Often in radio that would mean imminent cancellation, but backers continue to be so noisy, they have generated enough industry hype to sustain poor performance a tad bit longer....
My contention is that if liberal talk radio can't find an audience in New York City, it certainly doesn't have a chance in San Antonio, Reno, Fresno and other places now gaining Air America stations that have small "progressive" populations.

In April...

Brian Maloney takes a look (http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com/2005/04/how-much-more-time-do-they-need.html)at Air America's dismal performance in the most recent Arbitron ratings, which were released last night (April 25):

[In New York City,] WLIB's tiny 1.2 audience share, for all listeners 12 and older, is the same as for Fall 2004. The audience is actually smaller now than when the station first flipped to the liberal talk format from Caribbean programming.
And the station ranks a whopping 24th place overall.

On Long Island, a distinct radio market, Air America's WLIB dropped again, to take 31st place overall.

Don't believe any of the leftist spin, there's no way to dispute this factual information. If I seem irritated here, it's because the dishonesty from the Air America supporters has just become tiresome.

KTLK's general manager wrote to the LA Times, insisting more time was needed to see where his station was headed. But so far, still no growth for the station: it held a flat, miniscule 0.3 share of all listeners 12 and older in the Los Angeles market.

Drop any lower than that and a station becomes too small to show up in the ratings at all.

My question is...who is listening to this station?
