Don't own any CD's by either one of them, but Jack White looks kinda hot (I know. What the frick is wrong with me? LOL) in the video with Miss Loretta Lynn..Portland, Oregon. Also, I like of couple of WS songs.
Beck, has never done a thing for me, musically or physically. LOL
Beck irritates the hell outta me, and the White Stripes suck. So I flipped a coin. WS won. :wavey:

WS. Used to be really into Beck ("Beer Can" is still a fave) but I like The White Stripes more nowadays.

I do like Beck, but try as I might, I just can't get that into him. The White Stripes are a fantastic band, though, and at the very least are interesting and daring even when they stumble (see: Get Behind Me Satan). Jack himself is also a pretty fantastic musical talent; he's able to get a hell of a lot of sound out of his guitar, and the beautiful record that was able to coax out of Loretta Lynn is enough to put him head and shoulders above most of his peers. Here's hoping he continues to orchestrate projects of that caliber with other musicians.

They're both great, but White Stripes have also the capacity to involve me emotionally so I voted for them. Besides Jack White showed his huge talent also collaborating with Loretta Lynn.

too non-interesting for me.
One is too nerdy (Beck) while the other doesnt have a f**kin' bassist!!! Sorry, having no bassist is the death kneel in my book!

Right, I've still got the rap face-off to come and I've got a cool one lined up for tomorrow. But are there any major names I've missed out that I need to cover? Gerald suggested a good one for The Grateful Dead, then I've got the grunge one still to come and another with Patti Smith, but anyone else?
Who am I forgetting?
please on the rap one...I will make sure to not reply in that one.
I have some in the category of European Metal, But only 2 people would vote in it (CreepingDeath and myself) so why bother

Do you not even like Anthrax's version of Bring The Noise?
I still have that on 7 inch somewhere
that was before the whole rap/metal & nu-metal phase killed the American metal scene (That pussbag Fred Durst, The second biggest poser behind Jon Bon Jovi, headed that phase says enough.)
Besides, Anthrax's "I'm the Man" predated "Bring The Noise" by several years.
Rap is poetry over sampled beat...Music? Depends on who you ask.

I'm shocked Stripes are winning. I think Beck is waaaay more talented. But, if you don't like something, you just don't, eh?
anyway, so Beck.

Beck has given us some mighty fine tunes, that's for sure (I love the latest "Girl" single). But my vote is for THE WHITE STRIPES because they truly rock.

Do Wilco vs. The Shins (or Ryan Adams, if you dare submit him to the will of the masses)!

I hear rhythm, I hear notes, I hear occasional melodies... If somebody's claiming that rap isn't music, I don't think they've got a teribly good idea of what constitutes music.

Oh Jack White is just as talented believe me. And I think a lot of people are swayed by Jack White's brilliant collaboration with Loretta Lynn. Van Lear Rose really is a wonderful album.
In their way, the Stripes are as quirky and experimental as Beck :)
You should check out the Stripes track My Doorbell, it's so cool and catchy!
mmm, yeah, okay. you're probably right. I'm just not very impressed. Is he really as talented as Beck? Does he blend disparate styles so masterfully?
I haven't heard "My Doorbell":)
Indeed, I've heard much more Beck.
mmm, yeah, okay. you're probably right. I'm just not very impressed. Is he really as talented as Beck? Does he blend disparate styles so masterfully?
That hasn't always been his MO, but he's certainly started doing so recently.
While I think this is a great face-off, I don't know that it really makes sense to try to directly compare/contrast the talents of Messrs Hansen and White. They both have very different strengths, and very different ways of approaching their music.
I will say this for Beck: Odelay is the absolute perfect album to listen to as you're driving through the desert, heading over that ridge into Las Vegas.
Yeah that Tom Waits vs Nick Cave face off may be interesting. Or do you have another opponent since I paired off Mr Costello with Sting (sorry!)
Nick Cave may be your best bet. Tom is just so out there and in his own league, there are few people to really compare him to.
Thinking of piano players, though, has there been a Billy Joel v. Elton John duel?
I might do an alt-country face off, I guess there's a few fans on the board to make it worthwile. But who do I pick?
How about Ryan Adams v. Wilco, assuming it's fair to pit one guy against a band? Both are outfits that started out as alt.country and then moved off into some interesting different territories. Or Wilco v. Son Volt in a post-Uncle Tupelo battle to the death!
My best friend recently got recruited by Wilco's folks to design merchandise for them. I'm so excited for/proud of him i'm even tempted to do this: :D Don't get used to it, though.

Really? I just can't get into it! I love Blue Orchid, but I just can't get with the rest of that album. My fave is still White Blood Cells. And I think Jack White is a god for what he did with Loretta's album.

They're both artists who seem to elicit rather violent reactions from a lot of people. I think it'd make for a great thread...

I wonder why that is. I mean, they're both pretty bland, so the violent reaction belies their music, ya know?

I have no idea. Beck annoys me, but has some songs that are...thought provoking, I guess. White Stripes last record almost made me want to club myself to death. That guy's voice is so god-damned shrill. It about strips the enamel off of my teeth. However, he is responsible for Van Lear Rose. I'll vote for White Stripes if Jack White never sings again, and only produces. And I'll vote for Beck if he ditches the slack jawed idiot pose in his photos.

That'll happen the day Stevie ditches the doe-eyed woman-child facial expression in her photos.
That is amazing for your friend! Does that mean you will get free Wilco merchandise?
You know, I was so excited for him, I didn't even stop to think about how this could benefit me. I don't think so, though. He's getting a flat fee to design a t-shirt for the new live album, but I don't know if they'll be sending him many freebies. He's just sort of working for them on a freelance basis; they get in touch with him if they want him to design something for them. This all came about after he designed an absolutely beautiful poster to advertise a solo concert that Tweedy played this spring at our university (well, obviously I've sinced graduated and moved quite far away, but my friend still goes there). Jeff and his people loved the poster and have stayed in touch with him ever since. He's an even bigger Wilco fan than I am, so this is like a dream for him.
I wonder why that is. I mean, they're both pretty bland, so the violent reaction belies their music, ya know?
They both seem to get stuck with the "bland" label, but lord knows Elton at least was anything but for at least the first half of the seventies. Billy Joel may never have been terribly cutting edge music-wise, but he has written his share of wonderful narratives set to some very nice melodies.

You should check out the Stripes track My Doorbell, it's so cool and catchy!
That track is a big radiohit in Holland right now. It's an amazing song: like an early Led Zeppelin-song with big pounding open bonzo-drums mixed with a childrens-drone and The Holy Guitarriff from the Troggs' Wild Thing COPIED, but translated in a piano-riff! BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is tough because I love both, but I think it has to go to the White Stripes. I just listen to them more and I love how Jack really f*cks with the blues and makes it something unique and original. I thought we had more Beck-heads in here though.
