race honour thrills nicks

ORIGINAL rock chick Stevie Nicks will announce February tour dates when she jets in for Melbourne Cup week.

The Fleetwood Mac superstar, 56, will do a national tour, including a concert at Rod Laver Arena.

Nicks has a race named in her honour at Emirates Stakes Day.

Her tour promoter, Andrew McManus, says Nicks was the perfect candidate for the Cup carnival honour.

McManus has a marquee at the Melbourne Cup, which entitles him to naming rights for one race on Stakes Day.

He offered the race to Nicks, who accepted, and has apparently not stopped talking about it since.

``I was in Atlanta trying to get Stevie to focus on some business we needed to do, and all she wanted to discuss was this race,'' McManus told The Back Room.

``She is really pumped about it.''

Nicks last visited Australia last year with Fleetwood Mac. McManus is planning a spectacular for her solo shows, and a special guest on some sectors.

Nicks, the unequivocal leader of femme rockers, cherishes her role at the top.

``I made the choice,'' she told The Back Room last year.

``I wanted to be that famous. I wanted to be hugely famous. I wanted to be the queen of rock 'n' roll. And in signing that pact with the Devil, I gave up everything else.''

But Nicks also advises friends including Sheryl Crow, Michelle Branch and Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks.

``My mom says that was what I was really sent here to do: teach,'' Nicks says.

``These girls do ask me for advice and I'm honest with them. They see me on stage and they learn.

``I go up there and what I do I learned from Janis Joplin, I learned from Jimi Hendrix. What I do on stage, I absolutely took from my icons, and the art of that great performer is starting to be lost.''

It's a horse race - it's a big deal - like the Kentucky Derby of Australia. :p

 Well, a friend of mine had a dream last night - wait, I'll post his email to me:

"I had a dream that your grandmother got you a roundtrip ticket to Australia to see Stevie!!
You were holding up the confirmation letter like it was a f*cking Willy Wonka Golden Ticket!!!
We were both crying from happiness and it was like an Ed McMahone commercial...

Can you believe that???!!!"

Premonition?

Dahling, that's what Xanax was invented for. :xoxo: Such a dilemma. I need to start dating a flight attendant! That would be good for an upgrade to business class, if nothing else.

An Australian fan posted on the LegBoard that she is set to play in Brisbane on February 20th, according to the Sunday paper. Hopefully we'll get a list of confirmed dates following Stevie's visit for the Melbourne Cup.

Is anyone else thinking about going? Seriously?

FOR SHAME. You misrepresent Sparky.

I am totally into him. Granted, I don't take the music all that seriously, it is just great party music. His ballads blow chunks, but the rocking ones are hella fun. And in concert ? So Damned Fun. It is mania. Entire arena, and I mean entire arena of 15-20k people on their feet, singing along with about 70% of the songs and waving thier arms and fists all over. And he is so damned cute. His voice is kinda shot, but hey WE'RE ALL USED TO THAT

And for the record, real leather, kinda high hair, and no fake gold.

How expensive is it to travel to Australia, and how long is the flight?

You have to be really die-hard to do that! If anyone goes, it'll be great hearing all about it. :)

Sweet. Amber, I can see you having a blast with the scuba diving and sporty tourist stuff. I hope you both get to go.

The orchestra is the deciding factor for me. And my Bon Jovi conflicts, of course.

Same here. Except for that last part. (I would never have guessed that about you, by the way. Not that it's a bad thing... Bon Jovi rocks!)

I'm really entertaining the idea. I'm waiting to hear more on the orchestra element though. My only potential conflict would be school since I won't know the syllabi for next semester's classes until January. "I planned a trip to Australia to see Stevie Nicks before I signed up for this crap" is probably not a good enough excuse to be able to make up a midterm, huh? The travel part looks manageable though. There are apparently some really nice hoStels in Melbourne if one wanted to stay cheap and really milk the sightseeing opportunities.

Cool to know so many American Ledgies are considering making the trip :D.
