This has probably been discussed a million times before... but whateva!

It's a new season and new feeling....

But what song(s) do you think would be perfect for Stevie to cover?

I've always thought Heart's "Magic Man" was perfect for her...

Also, since I've been listening to my "Halloween" music lately, a lesser known song.... "Darkening of the Light" by Concrete Blonde would be awesome for her.... the Stevie imagery is perfect.... and I can hear Stevie's and Sharona's and Lori's layered upon layered background vocals on it, and I picture a beautiful dark lovely video for it ....

Like a ghost...is the curtain ...
in the white light of the morning...
dancing... in the morning....
are you there....are you there?
and a shadow...like a sadness...
falling all across the garden...
dancing.... in the garden ...
are you there, are you there?

Shine on, friend....
Goodnight....
Why then.... the darkening of the light....

And the leaves... at my feet...
whisper sounds... so familiar...
whisper.... so familiar-
are you there? are you there?

where the clouds... pull apart....
where the moon... changes faces...
in the quiet... secret places...
are you there? are you there?

Hi, I'm new here, my name's kirsten, i love reading what you all have to say... and when i saw this post, i thought i might give my 2 cents... ok this is a really random song, but one day, when i was listening to the radio, Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" came on, and for some reason, i was like, "oh my god this sounds like such a perfect stevie song" and then it came on again and i thought the same thing... i dont know if it's the lyrics, or the melody, or both, i just think it's fab, and i love the song, too.

We’re caught in a trap
I can’t walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Why can’t you see
What you’re doing to me
When you don’t believe a word I say?

We can’t go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds

So, if an old friend I know
Drops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?

Here we go again
Asking where I’ve been
You can’t see these tears are real
I’m crying

We can’t go on together
With suspicious minds
And be can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds

Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let’s don’t let a good thing die

When honey, you know
I’ve never lied to you
Mmm yeah, yeah

I dont know- i think I can see stevie doing this for fun, maybe not in concert, but with Don maybe- I think Lindsey's voice would be too high for it (even though it would be directed towards LB, duh) anyway, thats my thought!! and i think you guys are great!!!!

As a HUGE fan of both the band Concrete Blonde and it's singer and songwriter, the incredible Johnette Napolitano, I can think of a number of her songs that would be considered tailor made for Stevie. "Darkening Of The Light" is certainly one of them. Great call!

Welcome new peeps!

I like it when Stevie does covers, but it just pains me that she would do those instead of "finishing" all her unreleased songs.

Just for grins - what if Stevie covered some newer stuff? Say by Britney or Xtina or (insert Pop Tart here)? Ya know, just to show them how it should be done.

But, there are a few Patty Griffin songs I wish were Stevie songs. As well as a few Tori Amos... (as much as I love both of those ladies).

Patty Griffin's "Rain" is awesome... I actually cry when I hear it/sing it... I don't know about Stevie covering it... I might have to go to the hospital for treatment if I heard that...

And I love-L-O-V-E- love Tori's "China" but I'm not sure about a Stevie cover on that one... maybe on a "Caught A Lite Sneeze"' that seems more Stevie's speed..... or at least my speed of Stevie.... :-)

I've always thought Stevie, with heavy vocal harmonies from Christine, could do a brilliant cover of the George Harrison-penned Eric Clapton song "Run So Far" from his "Journeyman" album.

I love this song SO much - and Concrete Blond, for that matter. True, would be great for Stevie (right along the "pains of making it big" themes she does herself). I've always loved the line "they talk you up and then they talk you down, and you begin to doubt..." Perfect Steviesque angst.

"I Touch Myself"

I love myself
I want you to love me
When I'm feelin' down
I want you above me
I search myself
I want you to find me
I forget myself
I want you to remind me

I don't want anybody else
When I think about you
I touch myself
I don't want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no

You're the one who makes me happy honey
You're the sun who makes me shine
When you're around I'm always laughing
I want to make you mine

I close my eyes
And see you before me
Think I would die
If you were to ignore me
A fool could see
Just how much I adore you
I get down on my knees
I'd do anything for you

There are a number of Joni Mitchell songs that I have always thought Stevie could do justice to..."Car on a Hill" and "Trouble Child" (both from the brilliant COURT & SPARK release) come to mind...Stevie could really wrap herself around either of these beauties and come out smelling like a rose...

This may be totally off the wall, but I'd LOVE to hear her do " Lost Inside of You". It's a song from that movie "A Star Is Born" with Barbara Striesand and Kris Kristofferson. (I know...hokey..:sorry: ) But the music is good. The lyrics are:

Time has come again,
when love is in the wind
Like soft music in a a dream,
you make all of them come true
When you came inside my life...now I'm lost inside of you

Lost in the music and lost in your eyes
I could spend all of my time
hearing songs you sing,
feeling love you bring to me
Darling being close to you
make all of my dreams come true
When you came inside my life
Now I'm lost inside of you

If she ever does anything from C&S, it BETTER be "Raised on Robbery".

(But I love both those songs too).

I think she would do an awesome Bonnie Tyler with Total Eclipse of the Heart. Also a few more male rock songs wouldn't hurt. I never really thought about it much until the Zeppelin cover on the last tour. She also sang a stunning Hotel California which she absolutely nailed. Even Bryan Adams Summer of 69 has come into my head as an interesting choice.

Send in the Clowns.

THE REASONS:
1. It's written for an older woman to sing
2. I dreamt that I heard Stevie singing it on the radio last night, before I read this thread (no joke), and it sounded nice, piano and bass,...very quiet...lovely.

If I ever heard stevie cover "Summertime" i do believe i would crap my pants. it would be amazing!

How about just a full-on Fleetwood Mac Porgy and Bess album? What could Lindsey do with some of those songs...

While I don't think Stevie could do it as well as Ted Leo did it, how about "Since U Been Gone?"

Stevie could offer an interesting take on a Shins song, say, something like "Gone For Good."

How about a duet with Jack White on Bacharach/David's "I Don't Know What To Do With Myself?"

If she didn't shine it up too much, she could also give a nice version of a Tom Waits ballad, like "House Where Nobody Lives" or "Alice."

For the millionth time, Blondie's "Night Wind Sent". It just screams early Stevie without all the fairy witch schtick.

Your music by the night wind sent
Awakes my quiet instrument
In the silence of your steps
I can see into the depths
Messenger of sympathies
My heart beats loud in ecstasy
When your shadow falls on me
A silhouette reality
And I chase every night after you
And I chase after you

Of all your loaded mysteries
The color of your sympathies
My words cannot express your awful loveliness
So come with me through smoke and mirrors
We'll bring our differences nearer
We'll float upon an inland sea
Embody visions of a dream
And I chase every night after you

I got a chill and the night wind sent me a chill
And the night wind sent me a chill

You wander through my sleeping mind
Reading thoughts I've left behind
I always know when you've been there
Tangles of perfume fill my hair

Your music by the night wind sent
Awakes my quiet instrument
In the silence of your steps
I can see into the depths

Naturally, but I've been saying for ages that particular song is perfect for her to cover. She really can't hit the high notes or even attempt to sing it in the original key, so maybe she could do it a la "Goodbye Baby." I think it would kick. :p :xoxo:

The song I would want her to do first would be Patti Smith's Dancing Barefoot. I think she's so perfect for it that I've always imagined I would beg her to do it if I ever had the opportunity to meet her. I don't have it with me to link to right now but I do have my other suggestion:

Hey Pretty (http://home.ripway.com/2004-1/62384/HeyPretty.mp3) by Poe. I think she almost sounds like Stevie in this song. It's just very sexy and I think she could sing it in her current range. Here's the lyrics:
Well it's 3 a.m. I'm out here riding again
Through the wicked winding streets of my world
I make a wrong turn brake it now I'm too far gone
I got a siren on my tail and that ain't
The fine I'm looking for
I see a stairway so I follow it down
Into the belly of a whale
Where my secrets echo all around
You know me now but to do better than that
You've got to follow me
Boy I'm tryin' to show you where I'm at
Hey pretty
Don't you wanna take a ride with me?
Through my world
Hey pretty
Don't you wanna kick and slide
Through my world?
NOW l I've got a mind full of wicked designs
I've got a non-stop hole in my head--imagination
I'm in a building that has two thousand floors
and when they all fall down
I think you know it's you they're fallin' for
I can't forget I am a sole architect
I built the shadows here
I built the GROWLIN' voice I fear
You add it up but to do better than that
You've got to follow me
Boy I'm tryin' to show you where I'm at
Hey pretty
Don't you wanna take a ride with me?
Through my world
Hey pretty
Don't you wanna kick and slide
Through my world?
Hey pretty
My pretty baby
Rockin' through my world
(my world)
Hey pretty
(HEY PRETTY)
my pretty baby
Rockin' through my world
(my world)
Hey now
Can't you feel me longing?
(Do you get the gist of this song now?)
Hey now
Can't you feel me?
Feel me
Hey pretty...{Hey pretty}
{My pretty baby}
Hey pretty baby
DON'T YOU wanna take a ride with me?
DON'T YOU WANNA TAKE A RIDE WITH ME?
(my baby)
DON'T YOU WANNA TAKE A RIDE WITH ME?
(my baby)
MY PRETTY BABY
DON'T YOU WANNA...
...ROCKIN' THROUGH MY WORLD
DON'T YOU WANNA TAKE A RIDE WITH ME?

DON'T YOU WANNA...
DON'T YOU WANNA TAKE A RIDE WITH ME?

Hi Kirsten! I agree with you 100% on this song. Absolutley.

And on another note...I think she should cover Heart's 'These Dreams.' It was originally offered to Stevie before Heart anyway.

And...

It would be fun to hear her cover 'Red, Red Wine' by UB40 and 'Weather With You' by Crowded House.

You know, I've talked before about my views on Stevie involuntarily kicking off the Goth movement, but I think she would do an excellent job of "Bloodletting". I also think she would sound great doing "I Touch Myself" but don't think she would ever do it.

I think it would be really funny for her to do a song with a witchy theme, because of all the rumors of her being a witch, like "Spellbound" by Souxsie and the Banshees or I Put A Spell On you.

Just like Stevie, Olivia Newton John can do the ballads as well as songs that are more rockin' I feel that Oliva just didn't pursue the harder edged songs as much as the ballads. The Soul Kiss album was full of some pretty good rock songs.

What about 'Self Control" by Laura Branigan? I think Stevie could pull that song off.

Send in the Clowns.

THE REASONS:
1. It's written for an older woman to sing
2. I dreamt that I heard Stevie singing it on the radio last night, before I read this thread (no joke), and it sounded nice, piano and bass,...very quiet...lovely.

I totally agree, Send In The Clowns is beautiful, Stephen Sondheim (a personal hero :D ) wrote many songs she could sing. I'd especially love to hear Losing My Mind.

As for Soul Kiss, love that 'Moth To A Flame' song.

You do know that there is a Stevie Nicks boot of the song that Olivia also covered (and released), Tied Up (In Promises)?

Course I have yet to hear a A quality boot of 'Tied Up (In Promises)' by Stevie Nicks. All the ones I have are grueling to get through...but I like how Stevie covered it better than Olivia.
