I have a neighbor who just bought their 8 year old son a pit bull. I like dogs. It is just that "aggressive" breeds scare me when they are in the hands of the wrong kind of people.

My problem is: the boy in unable to control the puppy. The dog is already stronger than the boy and he can not control him on the leash. When I go outside to get in my car the boy allows the dog to run up my driveway toward me, I always stop in my tracks and back away, and I say to the child "please reel him back in". The boy thinks this is very funny (as he struggles to reel the dog back in). #1, the kid is an assh*le. #2, he is not real bright, not a great combination. I am not afraid of the puppy, but I do not want him jumping up on me and snagging my clothing. Which is what other neighbors tolerate, they all think the little boy and his pittbull are just adorable. I don't.

I tried to speak to the mother (with whom I am civil with) but she says "well there is nothing I can do, I just can't control the boy, and I can't take his puppy away from him." I said, well "if the dog attacks someone you are gonna have a problem". She said, " Pit Bulls have a bad reputation, this is the nicest dog, he is not going to attack anyone and if he does, I am very well insured". Ugh!

What do I do now?

My friend has a pitbull and she is the sweetest dog ever. But yes she is very strong. Pitbulls are full of muscle.

That puppy is going to grow big very soon and that 8 year old boy is not going to be able to control it.

Good luck to you. You will need it. lol

sorry.

hmmm...tuffy.
id pick up a can of air freshner to walk in/out of the house
spray in their direction when you see them coming
when the boy asks what it is tell him its a doggybuster
maybe he will think twice about allowing him in your direction
when mom asks about it say youre sick of her stench
thatd go over

I already have money....so that is not important....

although I do like the BTFLCHLD's idea...maybe I will carry some mace...although I hate to injure an animal just because his owner is an idiot, although I suppose if I mace the dog on my property when it is coming at me, it is justified, and hopefully that would teach the dog to stay the hell away from me....

is that cruel? It sounds cruel....but then again, getting bit by a dog sucks too...I can see the handwriting on the wall...it's coming...

I have always been able to stop dogs in their tracks be fearlessly screaming NO and pointing at the dog, which stops and after a few times usually goes away. But, there are sonic devices that may help you and not hurt the dog. Good Luck.

I'd talk to the mother again and then if nothing happens I'd call animal control. Keep everything well documented. Go to the pet store and see if there are any deterrents that aren't necessarily harmful.

I completely understand and feel the same way. There are products out there that are made from natural elements that a dog does not like to smell or taste, but are not harmful.

I have heard of a less hurtful tactic that still gets the message across- a water gun filled with water but a little lemon juice. I have never tried it, but hear they will definately not come after you after a few times of that. And it is not as hurtful to the corneas as mace.

BTFLCHLD

my advice wasnt to hurt the dog (they are afterall controlled by the owner...if in fact the owner is responsible.)
it was meant merely as a deterant for the child to keep from coming to your drive every morning when you depart...
most kids wouldnt want their dog near the "crazy" person welding dogbust spray :wavey: (i could be wrong)

I had to chime in-- i work at a 'dog day care' (Camp Bow Wow) and we use water bottles for discipline-- we spray the dogs in the face w/ water when they are getting too aggressive w/ each other, or jumping on us. It's a good deterrent in that it is basically harmless, but most of them really don't like it. (and if the water doesn't do it, try the lemon juice, as someone suggested!) :-)

If this child can't control his dog now, it's not gonna get better. The mother seems to be of no help. If the dog is dragging the kid towards you and coming onto your property, I'd start dealing w/ it now. Carry a water spray bottle w/ you when you go out to your car (it's better on stream then on spray) , and as soon as you feel the dog is getting out of control --is pulling the child to get closer to you or is about to jump on you-- etc spray him right in the face and say very loudly "NO." Hopefully the dog will learn soon that if he gets too close, you will nail him in the face. If one morning you happen to go out and the dog sits there and watches you nicely, I would praise him. it sounds stupid because it's not even your dog, but someone should start training the darn thing and it looks like it won't be the owners.

And although many pit bulls are lovely, they do have a reputation for aggression, and if i were you I'd nip this problem in the bud while it is still a puppy. If the kid or the mom complains, tell them your next step will be to call animal control since they keep letting the dog come onto your property.

Oh, lord!! Too funny. But you guys are right, I have to do something. And a water gun may be the way to go.

Last year it was "hockey boy" pissing me off (the son of a NHL player who thought it was funny bouncing his rubber hockey puck ball off my Porsche and Benz and whose father would egg him on and tell him too aim for the rear windshield) this year it is moron with a pittbull...I don't know which is worse!!!

How do these people end up in my neighborhood???

And people wonder why I live on an acre up a private driveway.

I doubt that the dog will bother you for long. One of these days, the kid is going to piss him off. The dog will turn around and either tear his arm off or get him by the throat. Happens in California every few months. All pitbulls don't do this, but if they get no discipline, and the kids get no discipline, odds are something tragic will take place. Just hope you're not the one the dog goes after.

I think you should smack the whole family. WTF "I can't control him?" Jeezus christ. And then I think you should give a speech about how stupid people with no parenting skills shouldn't have children, let alone give their children a dog, let alone a pitbull. Oh, and nice pitbulls attack all the time. Often they attack your sweet dog or cat. Then you should call animal control. Or at least be on the lookout for chances to call animal control. Gosh, I remember I took my cat to the vet a few weeks back, and this lady ran in with the sweetest little gray poodle, it had just been attacked by a pit bull. I think it died, but if not it was in very bad shape.
And after you do that you should mace them all. :wavey:
hope that helps...

I have a pitbull, and he truly is the sweetest dog I have ever had. That being said, it's important to note that my dog has been raised with nothing but positive reinforcement- no punishment. While I feel that he is a wonderful dog, I know that his breed is capable of aggression. So I do think it's extremely irresponsible for this person to give a pit pull to a child. Retarded, really.

If it makes you feel any better, pit bulls are known more for their aggression toward other animals, not humans. It's unfortunate, but we can't take Cooper to dog parks, b/c I just don't know how he'd be around other (smaller) dogs. They're typically very friendly to people though, so hopefully you won't have any problems. Maybe you could try to make friends with the puppy now, so that when he gets bigger he'll remember and like you??

Thank you, I love him too! The funny thing is, I've always been a fan of dogs like golden retrievers, etc. I *never* would have thought I would love a dog like this so much. The only downside of having him is that most people are afraid of him. He's SUCH a love.

He's cute. It's great you don't take him to the dog park, that's very responsible of you. Because, even great owners with great dogs many times can't stop a dogfight. You're not supposed to get in the middle of them, and it's hard to call them off, and all that. I'm totally haunted now by that poor gray poodle being attacked.
Anyway, he's a cutie.

I think pitbulls tend to be most aggressive with smaller dogs- it's so horrible. I would DIE if Coopie attacked someone's little dog. I have nothing to indicate he would do that, but it's not a chance I'm willing to take.

My friend who has the female pitbull Besty also has a male cocapoo (something like that) named Charlie. Besty and Charlie love each other. It's so cute because Besty is so big and Charlie is a little dog. They cuddle and play together.

However, when walking Besty you do have to hold her really tight if another dog or animal passes by. She gets very excited and tries to run towards the animal.

I am going to try to post a picture of them later. They are so cute.

I say a squirt gun. The effect of the water is the same, but even dogs know what guns are, and squirt guns REALLY get their attention!

Wow - this kind of story makes me so sad. Because what will likely happen is that the dog will never be trained, and never taught what is right and what is wrong. He is going to be a strong, out of control dog. He will eventually be "too much" for that piss of a mother who "can't control her son." The poor dog will wind up in the pound. If he's lucky, someone will adopt him. But he may be too far gone to re-train. He will eventually bite someone - amd eventually be put down. It is heartbreaking.

Why why WHY do people like that woman buy a pit bull? I do not believe that all pit bulls are inherently evil and going to attack. But I do believe that it is all about the owner. There just are some dogs who are more inclined to be aggressive. And there is a big difference between the bite an aggressive pit bull can deliver, than a startled Golden Retriever (Goldens have soft, mushy, weak mouths - pits have incredibly strong jaws and sharp teeth). A pit bull needs a full time owner, one who will nurture it and teach it to trust and be sweet. I do believe they can be mushes - just like Rotties (aw... I love Rotties!). But, as I said, this story just makes me so sad.

I'd actually be really worried if I were you - sorry. I'd try to keep a wide berth of that dog as it grows and gets stronger. :distress:

I think it's a misconception that because the dog is a pitbull, it's somehow more likely to be aggressive than another breed might be. While it is true that many of the dog attacks that you hear about are from pits,
we need to keep things in perspective. For one thing, pitbulls are probably one of America's most popular breeds. In my own hometown I'd say they are the most popular. For another thing, people that buy this breed often do so because it is a status symbol a "tough guy" kind of thing. Often these people intentionally raise the dogs to be aggressive either as a guard dog or for illegal fighting matches. Making the problem that much worse is that more often than not these dogs are left unaltered. Intact dogs (especially males) of any breed are far more likely to be aggressive than those that have been spayed or neutered.

I have personally had many dogs try to attack me (and although I work at a veterinary office, only one of those attacks happened while I was on the job - a maltese bit my ankle). All of them have been purebred dogs, but not a single one of them was a pitbull or rottweiler or any of the other supposedly aggressive breeds. In fact, one of the worse attacks was by a golden retriever - a breed that has a reputation for being a gentle and loving family pet - which bloodied my face. I've also been bitten by a dalmatian, a saint bernard, a cocker spaniel, and an Irish setter.

If you've already spoken to your neighbor and she's refused to do anything about it, you should contact your local animal control and report the problem. At the very least they should be able to send an officer to speak to your neighbor and possibly scare her into compliance.
