I've read this before but came across it again today and thought it was worth posting. A lot of great stuff! Oh Stevie....
Discuss! I'll chime in soon enough.

Stevie Nicks
Would you stay if she promised you heaven
by Lance Loud

Details: Do you think Fleetwood Mac will reunite?

Stevie Nicks: Maybe. But not with me or Christine or Lindsey. Christine and I will always be close; Lindsey just plain doesn't like me. I never had any musical training of any kind. I just had this innate ability to walk in, sit down at a piano, write a song in five minutes, and go to bed. It drives him nuts.

Details: Did you keep a diary of your Mac life?

Stevie Nicks: Yeah, and if the book were to come out, a lot of people would cease to think of me as this eccentric, flaky girl. My journals tell the real story of what went on, like the way things changed after Bella Donna came out. No one in the band ever said a word to me about my solo career. They were keeping quiet for their own best interests. They knew if they ripped Bella Donna apart, I wouldn't give them any more songs. Remember, "Dreams"--which is just me--is the only gold single that Fleetwood Mac ever had.

Details: Now that you're forty-six, how are you dealing with your sex symbol status?

Stevie Nicks: I have no illusions. When I'm sixty years old I'll still be writing songs and singing them. But will someone in the audience say, "Gee, what a sexy older lady-babe she is"? I doubt it. I mean, get a life, you know? If physical beauty is the only reason people buy my records, then I don't know why I'm doing this. One of our managers once yelled at me: "If you don't lose twenty pounds, your career is over." I told him I didn't need him in my life anymore. I would prove my career wasn't over. (laughs) Then ... I lost the twenty pounds!

Details: Any advice for Madonna?

Stevie Nicks: The sexual thing is pretty exhausted. Maybe a thesis on religion?

Details: Street Angel is the title of your new album. What's the difference between a street angel and a more celestial one?

Stevie Nicks: Well, your heavenly origined angel is more like a princess. A street angel is not just a high-powered witch princess-- she can also go out and blend in with people. I've always felt that that’s the way I am: I can jump into the audience or go home with them. Then if I'm bored, I'm outta here.

Details: Who is on your CD player right now?

Stevie Nicks: Mary-Chapin Carpenter. She's brilliant. And Elvis Costello. I put "Green Shirt" on every tape I make to go out on the road.

Details: Elvis once said his songwriting motivations were revenge and guilt. What are yours?

Stevie Nicks: I write about the gypsies of the world. People who, like me, are on the road all the time. People whose roots are blown away.

Details: People used to make fun of your platforms.

Stevie Nicks: And now they’re totally in style, thank you very much. If you don't see me in platform boots, you'll probably see me in my platform Reeboks. I wear them every day.

Details: Let's play "Rumours." Surely you've heard the outlandish one about how you had a roadie blow cocaine into, well, a certain orifice after your nose became unable to snort it...

(Dead silence)

Details: Rumors like that must have been really uncomfortable to live with ...

Stevie Nicks: Yeah, they were. Eight years sober and the stories still get passed around.

Details: Rumor number two--still going around--is that you are still getting high.

Stevie Nicks: Untrue. I haven't done cocaine for eight years. Unfortunately, it's just the way I have to live. Do I miss it? Yeah, I miss it. Would I ever do it again? No. The doctors told me that I'd have a brain hemorrhage if I drank or did drugs.

Details: Rumor number three: In her act, Sandra Bernhard envisions a chiffon scarf fantasy with you. Is the feeling mutual?

Stevie Nicks: Sandra's a comedian--she’s gonna make up stuff like that. But truthfully--no, I'm not bisexual. I like men too much.

Details: What kind of men do you like?

Stevie Nicks: Smart, clever, fun--with a soul. I hate guys with too much machismo. As soon as a guy tells me what we're going to do tonight, I tell him what we're not going to do. (laughs) Actually it would be interesting to go out with someone who was a lot younger than me, 'cause I tend to have a really teenage personality.

Details: You were very public a few years ago about wanting to adopt a child. Are you still in the market for a baby?

Stevie Nicks: It just isn't the right time. But if a baby that I liked were made available to me and I thought it was definitely a destiny thing, then sure, I would take it immediately.

Details: Rumor number four: You are like the character in "Rhiannon"--a real witch.

Stevie Nicks: What do you think? (laughs) Honestly, I never dabbled in the black arts.

Details: Really? What about you and Prince?

Stevie Nicks: Let me state this here and now: We did not have a sexual relationship--I did not let that happen.

Details: How did you meet?

Stevie Nicks: When we were recording "Stand Back" I decided to be really blatant and call Prince up and tell him that I had been inspired to write the song while listening to "Little Red Corvette." I told him that I figured my song was half his. He came over to the studio where I was recording and listened to it--as I turned extremely white and started to shake. Then he walked over to the piano and put on a really incredible keyboard track. And not only did Prince make it up right on the spot, he played it with only two fingers. Then he left.

Details: Did you see him again?

Stevie Nicks: Yes, when I was on the road a year or so later. I was sick, and Prince brought some cough syrup up to my hotel room. He was sweet--he walked around the room folding things, fluffing pillows, tidying up in general. Then he gave me a spoon of it himself. But when I asked for another spoonful he changed--he said, "I didn't come all the way up here just to get you hooked on another substance!" Then he left.

Details: Do you still see him?

Stevie Nicks: No. I was at the premiere of Purple Rain, and in the scene where he slaps Apollonia I freaked and had to go sit in the bathroom. Afterward I went back to see him, and when he asked why I'd left, I had to tell him, "When you popped Apollonia, it kinda popped my brain." He looked at me like it just killed him. We've never spoken since. (sighs) It’s a shame, really...we were alike in so many ways.

Details: Such as?

Stevie Nicks: Well, for one thing, we both liked wearing black chiffon around the house.

Details: People used to make fun of your platforms.

I don't know, that lovely cover photo is about the only thing Street Angel really has going for it.

Details: Any advice for Madonna?

Stevie Nicks: The sexual thing is pretty exhausted. Maybe a thesis on religion?

So we can blame Stevie for Madonna's last decade, then?

Details: Really? What about you and Prince?

Stevie Nicks: Let me state this here and now: We did not have a sexual relationship--I did not let that happen.

ROTF LMFAO!! For Stevie to be dead silent there's definitely more to this story. I'm sorry to say this but I think it's completely possible this rumour is true.

So is she saying she doens't drink? Yeah ok Stevie ;).

Details: You were very public a few years ago about wanting to adopt a child. Are you still in the market for a baby?

Stevie Nicks: It just isn't the right time. But if a baby that I liked were made available to me and I thought it was definitely a destiny thing, then sure, I would take it immediately.

A baby that I liked became available to me? That is hilarious because you know there are certain babies Stevie doesn't like but if one were special ordered and fit her specifications perhaps they could magically make one appear for her. Her wording is so out there sometimes.

Details: Really? What about you and Prince?

Stevie Nicks: Let me state this here and now: We did not have a sexual relationship--I did not let that happen.

Did not let it happen? So that means he wanted it but she said absolutely not? She had all the power .

But I thought the story was he walked out of your life Stevie after recording Stand Back and never walked back in?

I'm just having fun with her. You know I adore my girl.

It is. I had a conversation with Herbert Worthington about this photo (which he hated) and the photo shoot. He told me Stevie was like "isn't this great...it's like the stuff we used to do." He didn't agree.

If that photo was indeed from 1994 there must have been so major re-touching because to my knowledge Stevie was not skinny in 1994 and she looks pretty darn slim in that picture.

But I thought the story was he walked out of your life Stevie after recording Stand Back and never walked back in?
Yeah, she keeps changing the Prince story.I think we take Stevie a little too literally sometimes. "He walked back out of my life," is basically her way of saying, "He didn't spend the rest of the week hanging out in the studio with me, and we didn't become the best of friends and spend every waking minute with each other after that."

I'd imagine that, when interviewers and fans ask you the same 10 questions over and over again for 25 years, you have to find new and fresh ways to phrase your answers... if not to keep them entertained, then at least for your own sanity.

Johnny Stew

It's not her silence that leads to me to believe this rumour COULD be true, but simply the fact that the woman had a very serious drug problem and when an addict wants to get high they are willing to go to just about any lengths. I want to clarify I'm not saying it's true, I just think the possibility exists.

For the record, I think in a more recent interview (circa 2001) she flat out said it never happened.

Well obviously - don't you think admitting to that would tarnish her Fairy Godmother image just a tad?

Well obviously - don't you think admitting to that would tarnish her Fairy Godmother image just a tad?Uhm, perhaps it was unintentional, but the implication in that statement is that, if Stevie doesn't respond to the rumour, then her silence speaks as an admission of guilt, but when she does deny the rumour, then it's only because she's hiding the truth -- which is, therefore, also an admission of guilt.

I have to say I agree it could be true given that addicts will try anything to get the high. But, even if it is true, it would not change my opinion of her as she was an addict.

She was thinner right up until the tour and, I think, Sparky said he saw her at the beginning of that tour and she was not huge (I think it was that tour) - Also, right around that time, she did a VH-1 or MTV thing about her closet full of clothes and she looked way thinner in that than on stage.

great interview, cheers, and funny comments everyone

i wouldn't think less of stevie if the coke incident were real either, but i don't believe she would have done it. i remember an interview from a few years back when the interviewer asked (they were at one of stevie's palatial homes) if she would take a dip in the pool and she laughed and said, basically, i don't wear a swimsuit in front of anyone. no one sees me in a swim suit. i think she is quite modest about that kind of thing, and i cannot see her getting into an undignified coke pose. i mean... she is all about dignity, even when at her most wasted.

Yup. Any photo editor can point out the croping/blending/shading in photoshop. It's very easy to do.
This photo has been altered. Also they cleverly placed her footing so as to slenderize the body.

DUH! You missed my point about her being inconsistent in interviews. Maybe her sexuality was a poor example but there are many other examples where she contradicts herself and/or bends the truth but I love her all the same.

Well....her face is not that slim...and you can see how big her upper arms are.....and that booty. As for the stomach....girdle...and major sucking in.

Plus Stevie often will have her face straight at the camera, but her body turned to the side to give the illusion of a trimmer waist. Too bad that only works on film. I'd be walking around sideways all day long.

She was thinner right up until the tour and, I think, Sparky said he saw her at the beginning of that tour and she was not huge (I think it was that tour) - Also, right around that time, she did a VH-1 or MTV thing about her closet full of clothes and she looked way thinner in that than on stage.

Personally, I have noticed La Nicks tends to gain weight while on tour.

I agree completely about Stevie being thinner at the start of her tours. I think that was totally apparent with Say You Will. And in the Details interview, she specifically mentions having lost weight recently. I think she was thinner when she did these pics and they photoshopped a little here and there. But she was definitely heavier by the time she made it to Letterman and Leno and to Dallas where I saw her on the Street Angel tour.

Or maybe, given her anxiety & stage fright, her cortisol response kicks in when she's on tour.

The link between cortisol & body fat is a studied one.

Hence the massive profits of Corti-Slim & Relacore.:D

It is. I had a conversation with Herbert Worthington about this photo (which he hated) and the photo shoot. He told me Stevie was like "isn't this great...it's like the stuff we used to do." He didn't agree.

But they did that shoot specifically for Details.

Well If Herbington Worthington didn't like the shoot, then he should go back to shooting Stevie himelf, instead of selling antinques...don't cha think?

ROTF LMFAO!! For Stevie to be dead silent there's definitely more to this story. I'm sorry to say this but I think it's completely possible this rumour is true.

Well, I guess I had to admit it now. I'm the roadie who blew the blow! Yep, I did it...and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! I used a staw most often...sometimes a piece of rolled up tissue paper from the flowers delivered to Stevie backstage. The Rock A Little tour was a crazy time and I needed the steady paycheck, so I did anything to please the boss! Actually, it was quite the honor. Our little private ritual before the show!

Just kidding!;)

You know I loves you, Sapph....but I think she was dead silent because she was soooooo offended that someone actually asked her that, In her fortieth decade, and after 20 years of proven skill and fame as a musical icon/legend/talent/writer/singer/blah/whatever you want to call Stevie.

As well she should be. I would be silent, too, at the sheer audacity of someone asking that! If it was true or not (I don't think it is) the mere act of someone asking me about it would make me go silent, because I would be sooo appalled. I would be appalled as myself, I can ONLY IMAGINE how appalled Stevie would be. "Good lord, can we get a grip here????"
Is what I would think.
I would think, if I were Stevie, "I have this huge awesome body of work, with two bands, and i have a new album coming out, and I was in rock during the late seventies and eighties, and I was the super queen bee of it, and some ASSHOLE is actually trying to ask me if I got coke blown up my bum?!?!?

That's what I would think. :) I wouldn't be able to believe, with all I (Stevie) has to offer, and all that I (Stevie) have accomplished, and continue to accomplish, that someone would actually ask me about that. :wavey: I would be the most silent person you have ever seen if someone asked me that. And Stevie is nice.
I gotta be honest, My admiration goes out to her for not having smacked upside the head a few of her interviewers. Just saying.

I always wondered that myself. But Herbert is a very cool guy and I didn't want to be a nosey, prying little ****. Not sure 100% as to why he doesn't shoot SN or FM anymore. I have my ideas, cause folks, he did shoot some of my own photos...but I really do not think it's my place to tell why he no longer photographs. He was a pretty amazing photographer.

Indeed, Sparky did.

Somewhere amongst my belongings I have a photo from the infamous Roxbury show, and her arms are up and you can see she is in pretty good shape. She had a unitard on under that crazy suede fringed dress thing, with the crimpariffic fright wig hairdo (which for the record, I liked).

They certainly photoshopped the shots from that session (LaChapelle), which included the lovely pictures of her in the corner with the long black dress and the piled up hairdo. But, I think the photo jobbing was on her face, not her body. She was pretty thin before the tour. I think by the end of the tour she had packed on an easy 25 pounds. She had a different body at the end of that tour than at the beginning.

About the coke rumour. I did coke for years and some nights after partying my nose would not work so I would smoke it or mix it with a little water and drink it. I mean would'nt it be a waste to blow it into an orifice as it would probably just sit there and not travel through the bloodstream? I could be wrong but it doesn't make much sense to do it that way. Unless they used a power washer which I highly doubt.

Let me clarify - I agree with you completely. The way I stated that initially makes it sound like her silence is what led me to believe there was more to the story but that's not right. I have my own reasons for thinking the rumor could be true. I just thought it was humorous that they transcribed "silence".

Also, this is not the first time she was asked about this in an interview. I can see why she would be silent at first and probably quite taken back that someone had the audacity to ask her about this again.

It is unbelievable that this reporter from Details Magazine was able to get away with asking Stevie about the "cocaine in the orifice" story.

It seems like her personal assistant, manager, or a handler would step in and say what questions are off limits before the interview begins. At the very least, if the question was asked, it seems like they would edit it before the magazine goes to print.

I would say this interview is proof that, despite some folks here claiming Stevie’s agents/management are with her during all interviews to keep her from getting asked the hard questions, that simply isn’t always the case. Because I am quite certain if one of Stevie’s people was with her, they would have stepped in when that question was asked.

I still laugh when I remember that interview with Lindsey when Buck/Vie came out, and the interviewer asked Lindsey why they didn’t just call the album what it was - a Fleetwood Mac album, and Lindsey acted very confused and his manager stepped in and told the interviewer to quit asking about that or the interview would be over. Too funny!

I think you're forgetting the context. This interview is from 1994. Stevie was playing state fairs and pretty much had to take every interview she could get. She didn't have Irving Azoff issuing statements and corrections on her behalf like she does now.

I had to laugh during the Prince bit...

2017: He was my best friend.
1994: He came into the studio once, and we hung out on the road once a year later. That's it.

I actually feel sorry for her in this interview. She claims she is 8 years sober and we know that was not true. She had yet to come clean about her tranquilizer addiction so it was really like 8 months clean, not 8 years. That had to weigh on her.

And she did that Prince tribute like they were best friends and bandmates. Prince was a horrible human being. He stopped talking to Sheryl Crow because her charity concert in NYC back in 1999 was sponsored by American Express. She was donating all proceeds to charity yet Prince was furious about the corporate sponsorship that he stopped talking to her. Clearly Prince was pissed Stevie left the theater during his movie to go to the bathroom for another bump. 1984 was her peak cocaine addiction. No way she could sit still through an entire movie without another bump. Prince was pissed. But Stevie gave a noble excuse

She said she hadn’t done cocaine in 8 years, not that she’d been completely sober. But your point about the tranquilizer usage is spot on.

Also, regarding her weight gain during tours that was brought up by other posters, I think I read during her tours, she would often be put on antibiotics, another reason for weight gain as the tours went on.

It drives him nuts.

.

Apparently it didn't drive him nuts when they recorded Twisted 2 years later. But to me it's not big deal those change of opinions or contradictions with the time. I mean it's not exclusive to Stevie.

If Lennon were alive in 1995, I'm sure Beatles would have reunited for a tour (not sure an album but possible), even though John wrote How Do You Sleep? and Paul wrote Too Many People. And we have the 1995 Anthology and that TV special anyway.

Or Sting saying in the 90s Police would never reunite again, despite Copeland saying that they owed the public one last farewell tour. Then (though a bit late) you got the 2007 Reunion tour.

Or when the Hell froze over in 1994.

And more examples abound. Of course I'm thinking in the 90s, the "Reunions" decade. Today the past is the past, and that's where it should stay.

yeah, puts her divorce in a new light.

Funny how (I think in the Oprah Masterclass, not sure) she says "I just had to get my hands on that baby"

Stevie's understanding of babies is beyond lacking. Babies aren't dolls that just sit and look cute and wait for you to dress them up. Oh, and babies don't stay babies all that long. Soon you're into toddler years and no way she could handle that, never mind getting to the pre teen and teen years.......:distress:

Seeing there is a world beyond yourself and not always demanding to be the center of attention became beyond her once super fame hit. This is where I do give Lindsey more credit (though clearly his wife would have done all the heavy lifting in the kid raising department)

She was really bitter on 1994. Her songs from Timespace did not chart after caving to the record company. Her new studio album tanked and she was in a phase she had never been in before. Plus it was the first time she was sober. All of this created bitterness. Her comment that Fleetwood mac never acknowledged her solo career is a crock. The Mac played Leather and Lace from their stage once with Don on their tour. The Mac asked her if she wanted to add solo songs and she added 2 for the Tango tour and Stand Back remained in the Mac's set for years. How was this not acknowledging her solo career? I get that Lindsey was probably jealous that she was successful without him crafting her songs. He was better at it than her yet his solo album sold far less than hers. But other than the jealousy thing with Lindsey I dont know what she expected the band to do? They learned her solo songs and performed them on their stage. How is that not acknowledging her solo career?

Yes, they definitely acknowledged her solo career by putting her solo songs in the Fleetwood Mac setlist - especially after Lindsey's first departure.

I think Stevie is using the wrong wording here. They never respected her as a musician. Fleetwood Mac certainly acknowledged that she had a successful solo career, but they never took her seriously. You can see it clearly in some of the documentaries. Throwing a few her solo songs into a set list to appease the masses doesn't equate to respect.

Some of this is rightly due to Stevie's flighty personality. She can be annoying as hell. To me, the band attitude is: Stevie, can you step back for a minute? We're trying to work here. Sure, Stevie, ok. See you next week. She's the pesky little sister with the annoying ideas. The problem? Stevie's stage persona also happens to appeal to the masses - which brings a lot of attention her way. She makes a lot of money for them. The band members resent this since they don't consider her to be a respected musician.

This is the best assessment of why $tevie is the boss, that I've ever read.

Is she an idiot? YEAH. But people love her, and she puts asses in the seats, and that's the bottom line. And the rest of the band should hate her for it. They're far more talented, and they(obviously) knew it. It shows that talent has nothing to do with popularity.

I'm so thankful that BuckVie was the final FM project.

She also fell victim to believing her own hype. In the beginning she wanted to be known as a songwriter and actually worked at it. Then the fame thing hit, and she chose to focus on being a ROCK STAR and worked hard at that. She came to believe that her success was due to her alone. And she came to believe that every word she scribbled down in a drug haze was Shakespeare and the most brilliant thing ever. No one could get her to edit or work on songs... not even Jimmy after BD and really not after WH. There's a reason her albums sold less and less as time went on, and it ain't just the drugs. She got too much power over her own music and career.... and f***ed it up because she had no one who could hold her ego in check.. Even now, which songs of hers stand the test of time and rarely leave her set?? The early Mac stuff (FM and Rumours) some Tusk stuff, and her first two solo albums. Stuff from 1984 on might as well not exist.

You are the Stevie whisperer. You are right, she used the wrong word in that interview.

Do you remember that other bitter interview she did in the early 80s where she almost resented the success of Fleetwood Mac. The interviewer was telling her how unique he voice was and then Stevie brought up the Rolling Stone review calling her voice callow. She said "Back then no one said my voice was unique. "Me and Lindsey did not get people falling out of their chairs telling us how great we were then but we were better then than now because we practiced every day"

It was a clarity moment where she saw her early talents not recognized. Now she had fame and fortune and almost felt she did not deserve it. She unconsciously was talking about the cult like following that was falling out of their chairs telling her how great she was now. It was a spontaneous utterance of truth.

I also like how she acknowledges that she (and he) was better then because she put more effort in back then.

It's yet another resentment that she chooses to carry around all these years and openly enjoys talking about. Even up to start of the 2014 tour with Christine. Some of her remarks made her sound downright resentful that she was expected to do another tour with the band right after the 2013 tour. If we're being honest, the momentum coming off of The Dance tour was the only reason she was given the opportunity to do the Enchanted box set/tour which really was the catalyst for any resurgence of her solo career . I won't even rehash the double standard we've all discussed to death i.e....when she asked for two years to focus on solo work, nobody had her fired from the band.

I've always wondered if she's always been pissed that her solo career didn't piss off the band enough to kick her out and she didn't have the b*lls to quit in 1981. Her ego would have LOVED to walk around telling everyone that her solo career was such a success that the rest of the band felt so threatened they kicked her out. It's way too easy to cash the checks and play the poor pitiful me game instead.

And maybe I'm being extra pessimistic, but you can't tell me she didn't bring a copy of Bella Donna into a Fleetwood Mac session without looking for some sort of reaction or confrontation. If that story is true (hasn't it been questioned by other members?) it's a pretty blatant form of dangling the bait and seeing who bites. She knew what she was doing. That's probably why Lindsey (allegedly) ignored it and said next to nothing. A slightly different context, but she sort of did it again in 2014 when she gifted an ipod to Christine loaded with Songs From The Vault and In Your Dreams!

This aligns with the phenomenon Mick once described back in the day as "the whispering influences that get around the principals in the band" ie, managers, agents, hangers-on who tell someone "YOU'RE the real talent in this band; YOU are the reason for the biggest success; THEY need you more than YOU need them; YOU should breakout and go solo" etc etc etc

They saw it, especially around Stevie, starting in the 70s, and most certainly after Rumours. She admits in her own words to getting "the tiniest bit conceited" during that time (the grandaddy of understatement and denial).
This was when the demands for painting hotel rooms pink and hauling in a grand piano to her suite and all that started. And no more doing her own makeup backstage-- there came the makeup artist, hairstylist, masseuse, caterer, a whole staff of assistants etc. "Because I demand it!"

But she wasn't "conceited" enough to feel super confident going into the making of Bella Donna. She was certainly confident enough to set herself up for a solo deal, and to partner with Fishkin and Goldberg and others to create their own record label to control and release her solo stuff. But she was humble enough to be quite nervous (there's a great clip on youtube somewhere of her doing a pre-launch interview in NYC on the local channel about the album and she's clearly not cocky at all about how successful it will be). But after BD her ego just went straight over the top. It's part of why she and Jimmy had a much harder time putting together WH because she suddenly had TOO much confidence that she was brilliant and knew better than everyone. And of course, the drugs. And that combo led to some of the unwise decisions she made in the subsequent years.

It did feel like the rehabs and the tanking albums in the late 80s/90s humbled her a bit....but then the success came roaring back with The Dance, and clearly she and her people chose to interpret that as being mainly due to her. Not entirely wrong, to be fair, but....fed her sense that SHE alone was carrying this band. She is a LEGEND and don't you forget it. Nothing wrong with being proud of your success and taking due credit for it, but....a band is a band for a reason, especially this one, with THREE strong writers/singers/performers.

Exactly!

I'm over here shredding an epic guitar solo or banging away a multi-layered, nuanced melody on the Hammond Organ - and suddenly little miss high priestess in her platforms runs right in front of me twirling chiffon while shaking a muted tambourine. The crowd goes nuts.

What's more? As a 12-year-old, I ate it up. I couldn't take my eyes off of Stevie. She was mesmerizing. She could do no wrong. My 53-year-old adult eyes see a far different story.

I've only come to hate Stevie in the past decade. I don't even remember if I worshiped one member over the others, starting out. I've always rooted for the underdog, and as I began to grow up, I realized that people were only preferring Stevie because of her persona(not her music). That's when I really started leaning towards Team Christine.

Stevie used Fleetwood Mac to enrich herself. I doubt she liked being in a band or felt the calling/mission of being in a band. She went along with everything because the name Fleetwood Mac always sold more than the name Stevie Nicks. And even though now she fills arenas on her own at expensive ticket prices, she needs to open for Billy Joel in order to play a football stadium. Just like she needed Fleetwood Mac to play Dodger Stadium and Citi Field.

In the context of the tensions in the band it was not smart. She put Bella Donna in Lindsey's face leaving him a copy that he did not ask for. Stevie did not want to come back to the Mac. She was on her first solo tour sailing high. Under contract with Warner she was forced to regroup with the band and record Mirage. She likes to talk like she did on her 24k Gold tour that she was some sort of heroine that put her solo career on hold for the Mac and gave it up for Mirage. False. The Mac was under contract with Warner to do another album. Bringing her producer boyfriend to France was a mistake and it disrupted the recording and Jimmy left. You don't disagree there were tensions in the band then, no? Bella Donna was still charting singles when Mirage was released. Stevie has said a million time she did not want to put Bella Donna in their face. Yet she brings her producer to France.
I rest my case.

I do agree with you that Lindsey's girlfriend could have also created drama. But Jimmy was more than just Stevie's boyfriend. He was one of the up and coming, most in demand record producers at the time. He started as a sound engineer working with John Lennon and Bruce. Eventually became a producer of huge albums. He and Stevie just created one of the biggest albums of 1981. If he is with his girlfriend and his profession and craft is in the studio no doubt he would watch her in the studio. I am sure he was walking on eggshells but can you imagine him telling Stevie in the Mac's studio "Do the vocal this way. Or Mick can you change the beat? Remember that Gypsy was practiced for Bella Donna. Jimmy already knew the song well. Could you imagine if he suggested something to Lindsey? It was going to be trouble from the instant. You know Stevie loved the fact that his presence irked Lindsey the same way his girlfriend's presence irked Stevie. However his girlfriend is not an ace producer who showcased the world that Stevie can be a star without Lindsey. It was a bad idea from the start. IMHO the reason Stevie left a copy of Bella Donna at Lindsey's place was to irk him that exploded the myth that she could never make it without him and he was the sole success of her songs.

My take is different. There's a Tom Petty documentary where Tom discusses Jimmy being hired as an engineer for Damn the Torpedoes but forced his way into being the producer for the album. While I love DTT and most stuff that Jimmy's produced I don't think FM, and especially Lindsey, appreciated what may be thought of as an outside producer to a FM session. Especially a boyfriend of Stevie's that would only add to the tension and chaos of the proceedings.

And yes, they were spoiled rock stars by then and didn't like being so far way from the party scene and luxury hotels painted pink. If I remember correctly Mirage was meant to help Mick out of bankruptcy (again), so I don't think they were really that enthusiastic about recording, especially having to backtrack and record an album for commercial purposes. The end of end for all except Mick who still needed $$$.

If Jimmy barged in to the sessions and offered unsolicited advice, I forgive Lindsey for picking a fight with him. But if Jimmy behaved himself and sat by quietly and didn’t butt in on Fleetwood Mac, then I think Lindsey acted like a real turd. Recording artists know better than to barge in as a boyfriend or girlfriend and get involved in what the band is doing — it’s industry etiquette not to do that. I’m sure Jimmy knew how to behave as an observer or onlooker. I think Lindsey just got terribly pissy about something or other.

But, really, I’m amazed that Iovine even agreed to accept Stevie’s request that he go with her to France. Why did he even want to go? It was early 1982, wasn’t it? and his Long After Dark album is getting readied for release. What was he doing hanging out with Fleetwood Mac, a band he didn’t particularly like at that time? (Unless he and Stevie planned to enjoy the Paris nightlife after work.)

Yes, that's what I wondered too. He was a big time producer and record executive so it seems a little odd he would drop everything and be Stevie's boyfriend or date. He certainly has enough money to go to Paris on his own. I wonder if Jimmy and Stevie hoped that he would produce Stevie songs on Mirage, but then that would require him to also produce the band on those songs. I guess we'll never know because each band member would have a completely different take on the situation. I think he's a good producer, but I don't see him working with FM. I'm a big fan of Patti Smith's Easter album that he produced. Jimmy was probably responsible for connecting Patti with Springsteen to write Because the Night, which was her only commercial release.

Its possible she begged him to go to be a buffer with Lindsey and the band. It also is not subtle that it reminded Lindsey and the band she was a solo star. Its also possible Stevie had ideas to present to the band to do her songs a certain way and brought Jimmy as back up. With Jimmy leaving tells you there was drama.

It burns the musicians in Fleetwood Mac up. They (mostly Lindsey) spend months writing, arranging, recording, overdubbing, rearranging, and producing fantastic music -- then Stevie waltzes in wearing chiffon, blows some fairy dust around, and releases one of the biggest solo albums of the year in any genre.

Mick's solo album was dead on arrival, and Lindsey's solo album was lukewarm at best. In walks the reigning queen with her hotshot producer - ready to give 3 weeks in the studio. Lindsey was fuming, Mick was too high to notice, and Chris & John were laughing smarmily in the background at the ridiculousness of it all. Jimmy Iovine, the sober, logical man that he is, was like - "These people are effing crazy, I'm outta here."

To further injure egos, Stevie passive aggressively slides Lindsey a copy of "Bella Donna".

But yeah, they were all bitter, and jealous. And they had every right to be. The most UNtalented croaker that ever lived passed them all by, when THEY had the talent.

According to Stevie, she literally flew to France right after the last show of the Bella Donna tour. She at that point was living with Jimmy, they were together a year or two by then, he was at her shows, and she was having to give up that glorious moment of solo success (which I absolutely do not begrudge her, it was a true success) to go back to the tension and drama of FM. She probably asked him to come with for some moral support. I believe she said he was supposed to stay for 10 days (so not much more than a week) I would guess to be there for her outside of the sessions so she'd feel like she had someone on her side supporting her but that's just my guess... but he left after 1. I think he and Lindsey almost came to blows. Personally, not knowing any of them directly, I'd venture that Jimmy tried to have polite conversation with Lindsey and can see Lindsey being very cold and terse (something he's good at). He can be very, very cutting. Who knows what the actual spark was on the day, but.... I can see Jimmy's ego being unable to sit there and be treated like crap, he had as solid credentials as Lindsey (not as a performer but producer). Lindsey could be quite passive aggressive in that way of undermining Stevie, so I can see it. I can also see what others have said about her wanting to have her producer boyfriend there to wave it in front of Lindsey. The problem with people who take sides in the Stevie/Lindsey drama is that they don't grasp how mutual the dysfunction between those two is.

Why do I have it in my head that the recordings in France for Mirage began in October 1981? It fits with the fact that her last 1981 appearance as a special guest with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was on October 7th, and her first solo show was on November 28th.

If going to France was jam-packed in the time between those two dates, that was hectic and crazy.

And then I thought that Mirage was finished up in the United States in early 1982. Can anyone confirm all this, because I hope I'm not making it up.

On point - this is the best assessment regarding the energy between Stevie and Lindsey. Each party gives as good as they get. Each side has their narrative, but the truth falls somewhere in the middle.

Stevie waltzed in with her hotshot producer riding the laurels of a 3 million selling, triple platinum debut solo album. Lindsey's solo album, released around the same time, struggled to sell 300,000 copies. Now Lindsey was being summoned back into the toxicity of Fleetwood Mac to produce an album with a more commercial sound. His state of mind could not have been in a good place. Cue the cold, callous behavior toward Stevie. Cue the act of passive aggressively slipping him a copy of Bella Donna.

Jimmy Iovine sampled the energy and caught the next flight out.

Not only that, but the dates are important to help me jog my memory. When were they in France? When was her Rolling Stone cover story released? How many had Bella Donna actually sold by that point? I think all of this more or less coincided after the first of the year (1982).

I believe Jimmy was there as moral support for Stevie. (Why else would he be there, after all?) But she had her girlfriends, too — at least six or seven of ’em.

The Rolling Stone Record magazine that used to publish back then ran a cover tale of the Mirage sessions, and its big theme was that Stevie had ego’d out and was largely absent from sessions and nearly impossible to reach by phone. It was a lengthy piece by David Gans that really drove home the point that Nicks was being isolated (or isolating herself) from the rest of the band. Does anyone remember reading that? It featured a photo of the stage setup for the upcoming Mirage tour. It may be posted in the Blue Letter Archives, but I can’t find the landing page for that suppository.

She definitely did isolate herself from the band in 1982. Remember the Rolling Stone article "Happy At The Top" where Stevie would not partake in the interview with the rest of the band on the "advice of her manager."
They did not socialize on the set of the Hold Me video. Separate limos to concerts. I think everyone needed a break from each other.
I also remember Chris's passive aggressive comment "someone actually handed me this stuffed animal, usually Stevie gets all that stuff" to Rolling Stone.

It seems like people believe Stevie was presenting Lindsey with a copy of a record that had already been out in stores for months and which was a proven hit, and I don't believe that's true. She brought it to him when it was "fresh off the press" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw-5yiZYzgc), in her words, which I take to mean prior to it's release on July 27th. I see it as a sincere gesture that she chose him to be one of the few people in the world to have something that meant a lot to her — before the general public could have it. And his album wasn't released until October 1981, so the theory that she was taunting him with a triple platinum album to make him feel small about his less successful album is way off the deep end.

To expound on the timing, Stevie was on the September 1981 cover of Rolling Stone. This issue would have been available to the public in August, requiring a cover photo shoot even earlier. During the photo shoot she was singing "The Wild Heart" lyrics along to the music from an early take of what would become "Can't Go Back". Her use of that music seems to prove that Fleetwood Mac was in the studio doing preliminary recording for Mirage in mid-1981, well before they isolated themselves in France.

This timeline fits together perfectly. The occasion that saw Stevie giving Lindsey a "fresh off the press" copy of Bella Donna was a Fleetwood Mac recording session prior to the release of Bella Donna or Law and Order.

Mojave Desert. The director spilled the beans many years ago that the band was a nightmare to work with. If you notice the band members never appear together in the video (except the end with Mick and John). John was drunk and punched the director. Stevie was coked out and her boots were falling through the sand so they had to put boards under the sand. It was brutally hot and very windy and sand was blowing in everyone's eyes. The band traveled to and from in separate cars and had separate tents. The Gypsy video was filmed first even though it was the second single.

The Château they stayed at was the recording studio. It had over 30 rooms and the studio was also there. Countless artists recorded there from Pink Floyd, Elton John, Rainbow, etc. Just imagine being in this giant French castle in the countryside with one of the world's most famous bands. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner catered along with parties. I certainly would wander around the studio to be curious. I am sure Lindsey's girlfriend did the same and spied a little in the recording studio. Drugs were still rampant too. During the parties or dinner the album would naturally be talked about. Apparently it made Lindsey and the band uncomfortable for him to be there.
They were hard at work and for the first time......where's Stevie? Oh she's on tour with Tom Petty. Then she's solo touring. It had to irk the band let alone Jimmy coming along.

Oh I knew they recorded at th Honky Château d'Hérouville, but didn't know, or didn't remember they stayed at, too.

You are such an expert on Mick's book that I thought you would know :) The band spent a fortune decorating it for Stevie and Chris. There are videos of other bands recording there on youtube. Its like a historic resort with grand ballrooms, a swimming pool, etc. Mick needed to avoid paying more American taxes so he convinced the band to record and stay out of the country. The band first arrived in May 1981. Stevie flew back and forth during her summer Petty tour. She only toured with Tom on the west coast and Florida. This must be the time that Stevie complained about no air conditioning because when she got back there after her 1981 tour, it would be winter. Its old world luxury. Mick wrote in his book that he brought a horse to the castle and Stevie would ride with him on the back of it. Lindsey wrote 3 of his Mirage songs at the castle. Chris as usual was prepared with all her songs mostly about Dennis. Straight Back must have been written when Stevie rejoined the band in December 1981.
While I was reading these few pages again I forgot that Mick stated how much money he lost on The Visitor. He said it cost $500k to make and he did not make one cent. Just imagine how much money $500k was in 1981. I also forgot that he invited Bob Welch to come to Africa with him but Bob declined. That is how Todd Sharpe got the job. He had recently left Bob's band. The band bent over backwards for Mick. The band felt isolated working at this castle. But it was relatively close to Paris which they could get away for a bit. The castle had no air conditioning and was supposedly haunted. Stevie started recording Mirage before Bella Donna was released. I think the unexpected huge success made her return to France stressful which is why she probably brought Jimmy. Mick's solo album tanked and Lindsey's was only a fraction as successful as Stevie's. Also Rolling Stone crowned her the queen of rock n roll. This all created jealousy. Many band members dont rave about Mirage. Chris said weird things about it. I think the process and their state of mind gives them bad memories. But it all sounds exciting picturing Stevie walking up the giant staircase of the castle and looking out the top window when Mick rolled up.

Mojave Desert.

That was dumb, dumb, dumb. The Mojave is a nightmare, any Californian will tell you. Who decided this? Steve Barron? They should have gone to Pismo Beach, which has lovely dunes and the Pacific Ocean. AND it’s about 40 degrees cooler. I think everybody — not just the rock musicians — was snorting cocaine back then because these decisions they all made are so laughably bad.

I really laughed a lot at minute 3:12. Was she really trying to paint? Don't those paints on the palette dry immediately with so much heat? And the way she shakes her hair, really funny.

It made for one hellluva video though. Chris was asked about the concept in an interview around 1988 (I think it was the Greatest Hits Rockline interview). Chris said she could not remember who's idea it was to come up with the concept in the desert. She said that Fender guitar loaned them all those guitars for the video and she believes they did not get them all back because some were lost in the sand. The ending was cool with Mick and John falling into a sand dune hole with all the guitars.
I am speculating that some fancy video maker sold them on the idea. Their new album was called Mirage and when you hear Mirage you think of desert. So everyone in the band had sort of their own Mirage in the desert. It was a disaster making but the final product was quite something :)

High as a kite and tweaking in the sweltering 100-degree desert heat is no fun!

My platforms are sinking in the sand and my perm is going flat. I'll give everyone a moon necklace if we can just go home.

She was already a princess, 7 years into the game. No wonder she's become what she's become now. 42 years of being a princess can't be easy.

Of course is no real fun. I've been in the desert so I know how it feels (no need to have been born there ;) ). But the funny thing is because how ridiculous it was to decide to film in Mojave, with all the risks that the heat entails.
