View Full Version : Gift of Screws Survivor Rounds 1-3

Yep, we've run out of released albums, now it's Gift of Screws. This one's for the die-hards. Almost the end....

The Rules:

Please familiarize yourself with these rules because these are the standards
by which votes will be counted.

The way the hosts post: We will always post official results in the same manner
(+4 Red) and our goal is to make it easy for you guys to
follow what’s going on. So if you’re confused, look for our posts. We will
announce a) when the voting period has begun and ended b) who has immunity and
c) results.

VOTING:

- Voting periods begin AFTER immunity is assigned and ends at 6:00 EST
that night. Either rezamatic or I will post an official beginning and ending
announcement. If your votes are before or after those posts, then they do not
count. See below for how immunity works.

- When you vote, type 1) The round number and 2) the name of the song in your
subject line and ONLY that. We will tally the votes by the subject line, so
if it ain’t in the subject it doesn’t count!

- Votes can NOT be changed once they’re posted. We count your first vote and
that is all.

- If there is a tiebreaker, then ALL votes from ALL previous rounds are tallied
and whoever has the most prior votes is eliminated. That’s the way it’s done on
the real show, that’s the way it’s done here. If there is a complete tie with
prior votes (Murphy’s Law), then we’ll have a sudden-death immunity question
ready which will allow someone to make the call themselves between those two (or
more) songs.

IMMUNITY:

- After we tally the scores, we will announce the results and post an immunity
question/puzzle/etc. and await a response post. In order to be considered,
the answering post must contain both the following: 1) the correct answer and 2)
the choice for immunity. When we get that post, it will then be VERIFIED by
us in bright red letters confirming who has immunity this round. So again, if we
haven’t posted, nothing is official! Once we confirm immunity, the voting period
begins. There is no immunity question for Round 1; we'll start that on Round 2.

Thanks for playing and have a good time!

The songs for Gift of Screws survivor are:
Blue Turns to Grey
Deep Dense
Down on Rodeo
Gift of Screws
Given Thing
Gotta Get Away
I Am Waiting*
She Smiled Sweetly
Shuffle Riff
The Singer Not the Song
Steve’s Riff (Wear You Down)
Try for the Sun
Twist of Fate

*We feel Lindsey’s inclusion of this on his Soundstage without Fleetwood Mac
makes it a solo outtake as opposed to a Fleetwood Mac outtake.

Let the games begin!

ROUND 1 BEGINS NOW.

Given Thing. Sorry, Gerald, but he's incoherent. I just can't justify keeping it around.

Well, I'm just going with Nancy. I haven't heard that one, as well as like, two other songs on that "album." So, I'll just trust her.

Of course Bobo has a point. But I despite how totally incoherent he is on "Try for the Sun," it's one of my favorites.

Where's SGCYM? That not considered Gift of Screws?Lindsey certainly considered it part of Gift of Screws 2001 (as he did Miranda, Steal Your Heart Away, Red Rover, Come, Murrow, Bleed to Love Her, Say Goodbye & even Go Insane redux).

I had to vote off Down on Rodeo. I'm sorry, but I just hate it.

Lindsey certainly considered it part of Gift of Screws 2001 (as he did Miranda, Steal Your Heart Away, Red Rover, Come, Murrow, Bleed to Love Her, Say Goodbye & even Go Insane redux).I didn't realize that until you and Curtis pointed it out. I don't understand why SGCYM isn't included. I figured that the others weren't because they're on SYW or elsewhere, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure I understand that, either.

The only reason I can think of is because "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind" was actually officially released but in a very limited form - on the GLAAD Awards CD if I recall correctly.

Out with the Stones covers first, they hardly add anything hugely different to the originals. And it isn't easy to judge "I Am Waiting" based on a mere snippet, methinks.

You should pursue a career in comedy. Given Thing is offal. All he does is mumble and breath oddly, splash some guitar in the background, and call it a song. I call it ****, though.

For me such a thing can be magnificent art, but only if it's done correctly (which is a thing everyone will always disagree on). A 30 minute progressive rock suite can have as many elaborate movements as possible and a heck of a lot of time spent on creating it but it can still suck a lot. It's all about how the whole topic and musical content is executed and approached, not about the form itself. And the abstraction of "Given Thing" is no less fascinating to me than something that's lyrically and performance-wise far more coherent.

Of course you'll still think that "Given Thing" is done poorly. ;) I just happen to love mumbling and wheezing if it's done with the right approach.

You pronounce utter bullsh*t here. Lindsey's demo's are exquisite. Listen to the early moaning mumble searching-for-tonesandmaybe-wordsversion of Deep Dense and My little demon and you can hear how close that is to the finished product. I just prefer the "what is he trying-quality" more than the finished product in some cases, especially when it's finished with some of lindsey's obligatory lyrics.

It's a given thing: only THAT short lyric makes you think of the possibilities of what the contexts are of such lyric. He's having a ball too: you should see my five year-old jump around on this song: He does not understand english so he does not care for the fact that he mumbles sighs or screams: " this song makes me SOOOOOO happy !!!!! ". That demo has ALOT of hidden quality that makes it a song: it's the "feel" of it. A dutch boy that's five years old sometimes is a better " measuring point " than a spoiled fan.

Oh...and I'm quite good at comedy.
Oh and Nancy: you apologize to me in your first round-vote. You know I love this song and I knew that it would not last long. My taste is not something above yours. I really get pissed about you putting me in an arrogance-position: I LOVE lindsey's unfinished and rawest work and I've pronounced that multiple times before. That makes me no better then you "peasants". I'm from the "backcorner" of my country so you could consider ME a peasant.
I just said: Everybody who voted off my fave in round one:

SCREW YOU!

So your apologies: sorry dear: not accepted.

Yes, I'm a bit confused by this as well. On my disc of "Demos From the Village Recorder" there are two versions of "Given Thing." I believe the first one is the mumbling version.

The second version I have...I still can't make out the words very well.....but he sings a "ba ba whoa whoa" or something like that. It's much better than the first version.

So I guess it would have helped if we knew which version we were actually voting for.

After listening to the two versions I have....from what I can tell, the lyrics appear to be totally different. From the mumbling version, which I believe is the version that people are talking about here, I can only make out this one lyric
" It's happening to me, its something (?), it's a given thing.
Take your time, left behind, sing a little song down the line."

Now on the second version I have, which is easier to understand...I got these lyrics
"Sending out, sending out an offer
Take it (?), Take (?) if you want to
???? an offer
ba ba whoa whoa, Its a given thing" (repeat)

Sorry, that's all I could decipher. Maybe someone else can do better.

Isn't that song just in demo form? Why are we making judgements based on some layers he put down for his own purposes as though it's a piece of his work? This thread seems completely pointless and flawed. Not only is his work taken from him before he wishes it to be heard, they're then scrutinized in this form. I'm glad my few films were never judged based only upon viewing of the rushes!

I understand the objection to including such raw demos and judging them as finished work. I included Given Thing in an effort to be comprehensive, though, and because I knew some folks like it and would want it in here.

You may find the thread pointless and flawed. I argue it's not more pointless and flawed than some threads you have contributed to. At any rate, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

BTW some of these songs were done at Soundstage or released on the soundtrack for Wild California. Some were scheduled to be on the Fleetwood Mac album when it was a double, as documented by more than one magazine. They are obviously finished work.

Not that it makes any difference, but I'm voting for this one because I've never heard it.

I know it's either going to be The Singer Not the Song or She Smiled Sweetly that goes, but I can't bring myself to vote for either of them just yet.

I pray to God he doesn't have any Stones songs on his solo album.

Christy, haven't you been a fan long enough to know there will never be a solo album??

Go, go, go!

Um..I'm just curious, why are people so fond of Deep Dense? Here's your chance to win me over for future rounds ;)

Very catchy, especially the guitar solo. It's trademark Lindsey, that. Listen to it again and you'll see what I mean. It takes up a fifth of the song, the entire last minute. I also like the multiple ways he uses the phrase "I did a good job of falling," each time giving it a different connotation. He's so clever! And the insistent beat is compelling rather than plodding, in my humble opinion.

To me, that guitarsolo sounds like a copy of something he did before. I can't pinpoint it but I'm pretty sure he did use it.

part of it he used in the liveversions of second hand news (dance. LIB) or in the LIB- EOTWorld: It's a part of it, when it gets really "screamy".

It's a win-win situation!

Nope. I'm spoiled, I want something new, each song. There is some intellectual pleasure when I recognise the song he's duplicating (thank you, Gerald), but that is immediately followed by disappointment.

If we gave up on every song that has hints of a former solo, especially if we're counting live stuff as well, it would leave us with very limited choices. I prefer to evaluate each song on its own merits. The only exceptions to this are when it's so obvious it's impossible to ignore, ie., Doing What I Can and Murrow.

Hm, I think there's a difference between 'hints' and clearly copying old solo's. He doesn't do that in each and every song.

Actually, I must contradict myself, there are songs where I love this solo-copying, especially Hiding In The Shadows - That's How We Do It In LA comes to mind :)

I think the problem I have with Deep Dense then, that if that solo would be the only catch of the song, that is when it becomes irritating and when my spoiled side comes up and I want to hear more.

I find that song .. just boring. Slow and boring.

edit: I'm listening to it right now and it makes my head bob from shoulder to shoulder. All that's missing is the two ponytails. Not a good sign :p

I LOVE the solos in those two songs. But, I think the solo was a collaboration between LB and John Stewart and that's why LB used it for his solo album and John Stewart used it for his solo album. I think there is an article out there where John talks about it. So I don't know if you can really call it "solo copying" since it was a collaboration.

My best guess:

Wow. Good job! Is this from the first version or the second version because from what I could tell they have completely different lyrics.

It's not copying from Lindsey's own solo's, no. But it still is a carbon copy.
I meant solo as in guitarsolo's, not his 'solo work'.

Sorry, I meant guitar solo too. I was just trying to say that I don't think Lindsey "recycled" the guitar solo on the two songs because it was a collaboration b/w he and JS from which JS used it on Chilly Winds and LB used it L&O.

I'm sorry, but that sounds nothing at all like Ravel's Le Gibet.

Well.. whether he recycled it or not, that wasn't my point. He could use identical themes for various reasons, I guess many artists do that.
I'm looking at this only from my spoiled 'listeners' viewpoint. When I hear a guitar solo in a song that I recognise from another song, then most of the time that doesn't make me go 'woopie, how great'. I'd rather hear something original in there.

For HITS-THWDIILA, both songs have plenty of other things going for them anyway, I guess that's one reason why it doesn't disturb me.

Deep Dense just doesn't have much that would excite me.

A 30 minute progressive rock suite can have as many elaborate movements as possible and a heck of a lot of time spent on creating it but it can still suck a lot.

Yes' Relayer as a case-in-point.

Won't do much in the end, but I'm voting for this anyway.
1- Not his own song
2- Sounds like he's slipping into a coma while singing it
3- Bores me. Not good in a mellow/chill-out kind of way.
