View Full Version : Band Face Off - Round 24

The elegant kookiness of Tori Amos beat out the poetic acoustic strum of Jewel and the angst-driven pop of Alanis Morissette (who was named after her dad Alan by the way).
Round 24 has rock giants, one well established and the other just three albums young, up against each other. Youth or wisdom? You decide.
The results so far...
Round 1: Petty defeats Springsteen - 36 to 19
Round 2: Led Zeppelin defeat The Who - 22 to 19
Round 3: Madonna defeats Sheryl Crow/Kate Bush - 24 to 13/10
Round 4: The Beatles defeat Rolling Stones/U2 - 23 to 16/14
Round 5: Guns N Roses defeat Bon Jovi/Metallica - 17 to 13/12
Round 6: Heart defeat Blondie/The Pretenders - 23 to 16/6
Round 7: The Beach Boys defeat The Kinks/The Byrds - 24 to 10/10
Round 8: Johnny Cash defeats Elvis Presley/Roy Orbison - 20 to 19/7
Round 9: Abba defeats The Carpenters - 25 to 15
Round 10: Prince defeats Jimi Hendrix/Lenny Kravitz - 24 to 15/3
Round 11: No Doubt defeat Garbage/Hole - 27 to 11/9

REM by miles and miles.
They have had some brilliant albums and songs that have deeply affected me. :)
I'm not much of an REM fan - at least not enough to own any of their albums. I do own Coldplay's first two albums, though. But I'm voting for REM.
I enjoyed Parachutes immensely, but I never could into most of the songs on A Rush Of Blood to The Head, and I had lost interest entirely by the time the new record came out, which I suppose is ironic considering how big they are now. But when I was at Coachella this spring, I skipped Coldplay to go see Spoon.
(Random side note: How about Nirvana vs. Pavement?)
Anyway, part of the reason I've never bought an REM album is because I like a lot of their songs, but they're all on different records. And I think that says something, at any rate. So REM it is.
Plus, Michael Stipe was just so cute rocking out to "Because the Night" with Springsteen on the Vote for Change tour last year.
EDIT: Also, Michael Stipe on "Pete and Pete"? Brilliant!

I love ColdPlay. a lot. Their music mellows me out.

Aaah, what are you doing to me?!
I think I will go with R.E.M then, only cause they have been around longer and I have been listening to their music longer. But it's a tough decision.

Rapid Eye Movement
(Well, more like Peter Buck. Any guitarist who's into Roger McGuinn and Lindsey Buckingham AND who's made music with Bob Pollard and Jeff Tweedy is alright in my book.)

REM by default. I don't dislike them but I really can't stand Coldplay.

I dont know....R.E.M. has put out a lot of crap over the last 5 years or so. I would LIKE to pick them, but Coldplay has had 3 totally solid albums. Gotta go with them.

I don't like REM at all, so it's Coldplay by default. I like some of their material.
Coldplay. Michael Stipe bugs the hell outta me...

REM. I'm still not sure Coldplay would resist to the proof of time.

R.E.M.
No contest. Coldplay doesn't even come close.
While it's true that Michael Stipe and the boys have had their share of cheesy (there's that word again, Jyqm :p) hits, like "Stand" and "Shiny Happy People," there's no denying the genius of Automatic for the People and everything that has followed it.

Aaaand of course those are the only two songs I like. Aside from Stipe's harmony on "Fire" or whatever that Indigo Girls song is, which was gorgeous.
Although I conceed that M and crew probably have a bunch of great lyrics, some of which I've heard, his voice drives me to not drink. And his whiny depressive type themes don't do much for me either, however well they are expressed lyrically.
I wasn't sure if I should vote, though, as I've only heard like, one coldplay song. It was ok.
I just wanted to bag on REM.

oops, sorry sweets, just saw you voted for REM.
If it makes it any better, they may both be crap to me.
It's true I may be a piece of work, but surely not because of this opinion! Please!
When I finally discovered REM, I hated. At the time I was still, and neverendingly, catching up on my Retro. Always. That's about the time when I realized who the chick was who was singing GDW, Stand Back, And Edge.
But the band I liked most at this discovery time, was B-52's, Cosmic Thing. So, right there you see the taste divide. I was happy B-52 ing, and others were Angsty REM-ing.
You know I hate whiny angst, (unless it's Stevie), why are you suprised???
ILMF, still!!!!:xoxo:
And yes, I will readily acknowledge that REM are very talented and all that.

Ha, I didn't mean cause you don't like the band. I just thought it was funny you came in to "rag on REM." Made me laugh :xoxo:

I wasn't going to, I was holding it in, but then I couldn't resist. Not just to rag on them, but to actually state my real opinion. :) And you have to admit, I did acknowledge that they did some good things. And a bunch of other good things that I just have little capacity to appreciate!
Now:
"gyrate till you've had your fill! Just like a pneumatic drill!
Don't let it go, down the drain, you better hop on the Cosmic!
Wagon Train!
(cosmic! oooooo! )
Also, I am definitely living on Planet Z.
Also...I'm moving to the beat of a big bushfiiiyaaaahhhh!
Also...Where's my umbreeeellla! Where'smy umbrelllaaah!!!!
:D
Hey, Trackie, who the heck will you put up against the awesome B-52's??????
Please, don't pick someone lame. lol.
Honestly, I think they are in a class by themselves, but you being a muso, I'm hoping you can find someone comparable. *bows to Trackie's muso powers*

I do admit, I appreciate that you said REM is a talented band, even if you do not like them. :)
I'm sitting here trying to rack my brain of a group who is somewhat similar to the B-52's and can't think of anything! Oh well, I know Sharon has it covered.
While it's true that Michael Stipe and the boys have had their share of cheesy (there's that word again, Jyqm :p) hits, like "Stand" and "Shiny Happy People," there's no denying the genius of Automatic for the People and everything that has followed it.
I'll definitely give you cheesy for "Shiny Happy People"! I think I tend to associate the word more with sentiment than with sound. 80s synths may be dated and frequently embarrassing, but they don't scream "cheesy" to me the way "Shiny Happy People" or "Don't Stop" does.
"Stand"... well, "Stand" was just awful, says I.
Also, I'm terribly disappointed with dictionary.com's entries for "cheesy":
chees·y
adj. chees·i·er, chees·i·est
1. Containing or resembling cheese.
2. Informal. Of poor quality; shoddy.
That's just not right at all. Well, the second one anyway. The first one's dead on, as far as that goes.

I didn't like their last few albums, but New Adventures In Hi Fi is by far and away my favourite REM album. You should check it out Gerald.
I check out every REM-album after Green and Document 5. Some are ok. But not one of them ranks higher as the before mentioned for me. Any album that starts with a song that has the quality of The Finest Worksong is a potential masterpiece. I like Hifi though. Hell I even like Monster.
