like Alice through a can of trash...
you know, i went back and listened to this song after discussing it with brian yesterday. it was painful, as you all know, but i got through it. and i think some of you are really missing something in this song, much like i was. let me enlighten you:
Well I heard she flew down to the Mountain City
He said, "That's not what I heard...I hear she went higher."
She depended on her friends to tell her when to stop it
To make a statement...this is me talking to you
Like Alice through the Looking Glass...
She used to know who she was
Call out my name...call out my name
But I get no answer...she prays...
"Better run for your life!" cried the Mad Hatter
"Alright," said Alice..."I'm going back...
To the other side of the mirror...I'm going back..."
Oh no, you cannot tell a gypsy...ooh, that she's no longer a member
Become a deadly weapon now...along with everything else
Oh call my name...
Like Alice through the Looking Glass...
She used to know who she was
Call out my name (like Alice through the Looking Glass)
but I get no answer (she used to know who she was)
And she prays for the world that she comes from
Each had their own charm...
Buried beneath a solid piece of armour...or a steel plated vest
Some carry a stiletto in their garter along with everything else --
that they carry...Oh, call my name...
Like Alice through the Looking Glass
She used to know who she was
Call out my name (like Alice through the Looking Glass)
But I get no answer (she used to know who she was)
And she prays for the world that she comes from
Alice!...call my name...
"Ooh run for your life..." said the Mad Hatter
"Alright," said Alice..."I'm going back to the other side of the mirror"
This is me talking to you...well this is me talking to ya
Alice...Alice...
this song really sucks. even more than i once thought. and reading the lyrics only steels that opinion in my mind. :wavey:

Alice live rules and so does the rock demo of Juliet but the version on TOSOTM blows. Waste of a song with great potential. Sounds like bad circus music.

That is so funny, because I did the exact same thing yesterday, and came to the same conclusion.
I was thinking: "It can't be that bad, I haven't heard it in a long time, I'll give it another chance."
Although I appreciate the insight into her life or whatever, I just think this song is pretty bad.
um..."oh no you cannot tell a gypsy...that she is not a member..." Just saying.
The one part I like the vocal on is: "Call out my naaaaame!" specifically the word name.

The gypsy line is one of my favorites in the song...
I also adore the line "Some carry a stiletto in their garter along with everything else" (but seriously Stevie, a stiletto in your garter? That sounds painful but for some odd reason I just like the way the words sound together although it makes absolutely no sense).
At first listen the lyrics to this song did seem obscure but over time they've really grown on me and I've started to make my own references as to what I think they mean to me, as opposed to what she is trying to say.
I especially love the line "She used to know who she was". I relate a lot of this song to losing yourself and finding yourself only to lose yourself again. In other words, going back to the other side of the mirror. I love how she intertwined her own life (or whoever this song is about) and the story of Alice in Wonderland. I don't care if I can't understand half of what she's talking about, somehow I just get it.
I'm glad you at least appreciate "call out my naaaaaaame".

I like Alice and think it could have been better with better production.
As for the stiletto in their garter line - that is a reference to the older days when women in 1nefarious things like espionage literally put stilettos in their garters to as a from of protection. It is a metaphor for being clandestinely armed against an unsuspecting person. It is to me quite a stunning visual and I often wonder if she or CM carried the stiletto in their garter. I think she refers to herself and not CM.

See all of her strange metaphors has some meaning in Stevie's world, we just may not get them all.

Get some ribbons and some bows... and hit the road! -this should have been so much better, too bad FM didnt include it on Tango!
And while Alice may not be perfect, its irresistibly strange and fascinating.
my favorite line of that time:
"Each had their own charm~
buried beneath....a solid piece of armor,
or a steel plated vest.
Some carry~
A stiletto in their garter...along with everything else....
that they carry.
Brilliant!

I think so too. To me, that stiletto in the garter is a parallel to the term bella donna - both beautiful and deadly poisonous. I mean think back to the legends of the beautiful Mata Hari and that ilk - they were beautiful and full of intrigue, but could kill you with treachery when cross or their armor pierced. I think she sees herself in that genre - at least a little bit. In the end, I think it is such a vivid image from her and very telling of her last time with Fleetwood Mac.
