What depresses you?
I once cried when I saw the wind blow all the dandies off a dandelion.

I don't know why, but for some reason that just struck me as depressing & I began to despair of the ways of the world, & of all her inhabitants therein.
At the time, I was on a Beethoven late piano sonata kick. So I was listening to the Op. 111 Arietta adagio molto hoochie-coochie cantabile over & over & over again.

Animal cruelty and how so few care about the treatment of animals.
The effects of American capitalism.
Put these on my list, just for starters.
I wanted to take this opportunity to compliment David on his use of pictures since he has discovered photobucket. They are especially striking and appropriate yet original in this particular thread.
hmm, I was going to put one more for good measure, but that "effects of american capitalism" one encompasses a gigantic portion of things I could say.
When I stop to pet cats when I'm out walking (there's lots all around the neighborhoods) and they act like they don't want me to leave, and kind of follow me down the street, but I don't know what they want, or if they're in trouble, or if they have homes (in some cases. Some have collars and are really fat). And they miaow at me and get that compelling look in their eyes, as if they really need something, but I still have to leave anyways. To assuage my sorrow, I tell myself that they all probably just want some food, or to be let into their houses, which is what most cats want a large portion of the time that they interact with you. :)
Oh, and this is a big one - when i don't have the food I want, and can't get it.
Or also when i don't have much food.
When people who are gay feel like they can't just be gay because of various societal strictures. And when others get caught up in that circle of deception...

what in the sam hell is a cantabile? Ive heard of a canticle, but a cantabile?
It should be (according to vague memories from an exam) an expressive indication to have the piece played as if it was sung, and it's usually applied to slow movements, like adagio or andante... I think .

As for the Beethoven - that always has some emotional effect on me, and I love every minute of it. Though this tread reminds me more of Kansas' rhetorical musings while presumably stoned in Dust in the Wind, farily recently covered by the oddly expressioned Sara Brightman.

I am not worried about earthquakes. My house is built on a 3' concrete slab poured onto bedrock. Alas, Caltrans didn't build proper drainage for the freeway so all their water came onto my property and decimated the hill behind my house. Worry not. I am suing them.

When I was a little kid, my father used to sing the Meatball Song, you know the one :
On top of Spaghetti
All covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When I had to sneeze.
It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
And then my poor meatball
Rolled out of the door.
It rolled off the front porch

And then my poor meatball
Was nothing but mush.
I used to cry for the poor meatball. Seriously.

It's interesting (at least to me) that virtually nothing most of you cite as depressants is of what I or most of us would consider joyous, pleasureful or even affectively neutral (although one of you very astutely mentioned old photos).
Our affects can be so unpredictable; they can be brought low by the most seemingly innocent or neutral of sights, recollections, or musings.
I think of William Styron's recollection of the terror he suddenly felt -- which helped trigger a depression -- on a walk along the lakeshore of his summer home when a flock of geese suddenly flew skyward.
I once saw a lizard -- a harmless, cute enough little lizard -- dart across an expanse of low-cut bushes; & this for some reason laid me low in the following weeks with maleficent effect. There's no simple explanation for it, for the mind has its own motor.
I'm thinking of getting a light box this year because we have almost as little light as you in the winter. I think the sun comes up a bit earlier but the shortest days do get dark at 4:00. That really depresses me. :(
Really? I hear they're pretty expensive. But you can use them for years, I guess. A friend of mine did light therapy last winter, she did feel a lot better. Actually, the results of light therapy are very high!
I don't know if I'll do that. Some years it's better than others.. but it's always been there.
What you said about right wing parties, lately that has been bringing me to tears very easily. I get so frustrated when I cannot communicate the truth to people. It's making me sad as I type.

Gosh. You sound skittish. Are you a Cancer?

When I hear stories about people in Nursing homes being mistreated. That really upsets me:mad:

Hmm, I think what depresses me the most is people who are apathetic to what the rest of you have already mentioned. Seeing an old woman neglected in a nursing home is horrible, watching someone not care about it is worse.
Getting older (I'll be 25 in 7 months, ack!) and still having nothing to show for it
.
I remember this feeling when I turned 25 (3 years ago). Everything I thought I would have, or done, or accomplished was way off from where I was and made me super depressed. It took me while to realize that I have it pretty good compared to a lot of people, having my health, good friends and such. There's something about turning 25 that can induce panic. But I'm now 28 and not too concerned about aging. But I TOTALLY get what you're saying and its a such a crappy feeling. But trust me, it gets better! :xoxo:

Getting older
Animal cruelty
Rain
Winter - yep, it could be 85 and sunny, EVERY day of the year, as far as I'm concerned.
Cancer - Lost my Mom two years ago, and have been fighting my dog's cancer since Feb.
Being alone - occasionally

Wrong, IMO. It's far worse knowing that they're the one for you, and you'll most likely never be able to be with them. You wanna talk about depressing!!!
Happily married now, my ass!   I guess that's why I still get a few phone calls a year...
Trust me. I was FAR happier before. And actually had a sex life. I simply don't care anymore. I, quite literally, gave everything I had. I have nothing left to give. That was 7 years ago.
Thanks David, for starting this utterly depressing thread!!!:( :( :(

That was 7 years ago.I am so sorry about that. :distress: :distress: I totally understand why you don't care anymore; I have felt the same way. But I truly believe there is more than one soulmate for us all, so it isn't over for either one of us.

I've walked down a few more roads though, Hill, so I've probably got a little more experience to draw from(I mean nothing by that, only that you're still very young{damn you! }). I'd THOUGHT I'd found it a couple previous times. I was wrong. Those times now PALE in comparison.
I'm not the depressive type, though. I try not to dwell on it, and am hopefully open to future relationships.
Now why can't the 1% of the population that I'm attracted to(this might be an upward exaggeration), be attracted to me?

You have a right to be more discouraged. I'm glad that you are open to future relationships, though. :) As to why that 1% of the population won't reciprocate--I haven't a clue. That damn 1%.

Well, hurt is the same whether you're 19 or 90. But, when you 30 or so, and have been through more breakups, etc, HOPEFULLY one tends to recognize patterns, going for the wrong type, etc...
Some never learn. Some learn, and put up walls.:(
That damned 1%, indeed.
FWIW, I get date offers. I just wish I was interested.(actually, I'm going out now for a couple drinks with someone who I know is interested. Probably, most like, surely, I will not let it go beyond the couple drinks. Doing such would ruin my lonely, protected state:confused: ).

Seven years is a long time. But its been 7 since my breakup with my ex fiance and it does still affect me so I understand somewhat.
You haven't met the love of your life yet. When you do she will be with you. The other was not her or you would be with her.

That's interesting Curtis, because I have always felt the same way. And I don't just mean after she's done singing- I kind of feel it while it's happening. I've never been able to explain it (to myself) and certainly have never heard anyone else say that.

Really? I hear they're pretty expensive. But you can use them for years, I guess. A friend of mine did light therapy last winter, she did feel a lot better. Actually, the results of light therapy are very high!
I don't know if I'll do that. Some years it's better than others.. but it's always been there.
The light boxes are expensive, they're about $250 US. I saw them online, there was a cheaper one for about $125 but I wouldn't want to buy one to just have it break. Last winter was pretty bad and I don't want to feel like that again.
Ouch, there's something else that's familiar. :(
Next year there will be some changes in our health care system which means I'll have to pay a lot more. I don't know how I'm going to do that. That stuff makes me depressed as well.
Sorry to hear about your healthcare, that really sucks. I have pretty good insurance and am lucky that way. However, I just had to have a brand name prescription filled and they charge $25 for that which stinks. It's still not even close to paying the full price of the drug though.
