So I was looking through thrown-down.net (awesome site, i know the guy who owns it is on here) and there was this video of Lindsey singing "Here Comes The Sun" and it could not have been more awful. It was like soo far from the original version. Blah. Has anyone else seen this? Your thoughts if you have?

I gotta download that so I can laugh at it. I love Lindsey but damn did he butcher that or what? I think Harrison would've either been speechless, or he would've laughed. I don't know what the heck Lindsey was doing. I'm sure Lindsey has great respect for Harrison, so I cant figure out why he did what I call the "Tusk" version of the song. It was very bizarre.

The reason why I love this version is that it turns a very uplifting song into something that's very dark and full of anguish. And my non-musician ears still refuse to believe that he's singing off-key in it. :p

There are a few songs of Lindsey's (and I'm talking singer more than songwriter here) I'm not crazy about.
Very few. Some I've not been crazy about initially, but have grown to at least tolerate--if not like...if not love;-)
This is probably the only one I truly hate.
I think he was trying to make a statement by turning it dark--and I can appreciate that--but in a tribute to George Harrison (which I believe this was), he should (IMO only) have respected George's original intent and kept it at least moderately light or picked a darker song.
Don't like this one at all. But, to put a positive spin on it, it did accomplish what he probably set out to do.

The thing is that it sounds decent when he goes "little darlin its been its been a long, cold, lonely winter" but then BAM he kills it with the next line.

It was from ABC's New Year's Eve broadcast with Peter Jennings; the New Year's Eve just following the death of George Harrison.
Yep, that was definitely a stinker...a really big, bad stinker.
You'd THINK that the original riff would've been right in Lindsey's ballpark to expand upon, but no...he had to put George Harrison's words to his arrangement of "Big Love" (seemingly). I've never heard such a butchering of ANY song as Lindsey's horrid arrangement (or DISarrangement) of "Here Comes The Sun".

I truely believe that was one of his best solowithguitar-performances EVER.
And I'm not putting the arguments up again and again, but I am still very proud of him that he had the guts to put that song in another perpective by tearing it apart and barfed it into the microphone with so much heartfelt emotion. Off key? I don't hear it, but who cares when you throw it out so direct and edgy.
I think it's wonderful. But those who do not are also not so hot for Shut Us Down, I guess.....

I haven't heard this song but was it on a tribute cd or done live right after George Harrison's death? I don't think right after somebody has died is the time to be an *artiste* and f**k around with the original meaning of the song. The whole plan should be to pay respect for the original artist. Not to show off. Did he really do it to the melody of Big Love? Gawd. Anybody have a link to dl it coz now I'm really curious.

I'm still not too big on "Shut Us Down," and I wouldn't go so far as to say "best ever," but I really like Lindsey's "Here Comes The Sun," too. His voice is off-key, which is unfortunate, because I think his rearrangement works great. It does make the song a bit darker than Harrison's original. But then, the man had just died; that's a dark time. I think turning the melody inside out like that really worked as far as conveying the pain and sadness I'm sure Lindsey felt at George's passing. And it is indeed passionate.
It's not a "Big Love" arrangement, though. It's a "Red Rover" arrangement.

I have only heard the audio of it, and I like it. Yes, he's off key and his version is basically a new song, but the guitar solo is beautiful, and there's so much emotion and storytelling attitude in his voice that makes of it for me more an intriguing post-modern interpretation than a simple cover.:D
Romy
his version is basically a new song
Which is really what a good cover should be, anyway.

I actually think it is okay (welllllllllllllll, I haven't heard the original version before I have seen it), but I kinda get tried of those "Lindsey, all by himself, just with his guitar"-songs!
mylittledemon

but he is no more "off-key" than he usually is.
I will not stand here and let admittedly untrained ears call a nearly flawless performance "off-key."
How do both of those things you just said make sense? Thats like saying "It works 60% of the time, every time."
He does sing off key somewhat often. At any rate, his guitar work on the song was fantastic. However, I think the way he arranged the lyrics, and the way he sang it just wasnt very moving. I think it's tough with a song like that, because the original is so stamped in our memories.

I actually think it's quite good. The first time I heard it I didn't like it. I was like WTF? But then I appreciated how he did something different with it. I think it was a great tribute. I do consider it inferior to the original but it seems that that's how it goes with covers, anyway.

Just saw it. It's not too bad, it definitely works in some way. I like the vocal fine, don't mind that it's different. The guitar is a bit too "Lindsey Jangly" for me, but it somewhat works within the context of Lindsey doing the song. However, I did think it lacked warmth for the most part. Although Lindsey's facial expressions were appropriately deep and sorrowful. Overall I enjoyed hearing it done in this unusual way. And, that's also one of the Beatles songs that I actually like quite a bit.

A true music fan will only rebel harder when told what to listen to and will only search harder for less exposed slash commercial good music. Now go on and say that prayer. Go on. See how you like it.
Wow. How shockingly closed-minded. I guess I went about it the wrong way, with the thick sarcasm, but I'm trying to broaden your horizons. I should have said "anyone who loves music deserves to have Abbey Road." You're just cheatin' yourself on that one.

Commercial equals less "interesting". But now we are getting into generalizations and opinions.
Yeah I think generally that is true. However, I think Rumours is one of those rare albums that even though it was hugely "commercial", it is a great album musically. It just happen to sell 25 million copies and everyone at the time was wearing it out. Then you look at something like The Bodyguard soundtrack or something ridiculous like that. It sold a ton, was commercial, and definitely less interesting.

I didn't even know what song it was until I came here to find out. Had never heard it before. I think the facial expressions and overall tone of the song is due to Lindsey's being PO'ed at being told he couldn't go on that night. He threw his guitar, apparently (check out the hole in the bottom of the guitar!) in his anger.

My devotion to this thread is admirable. But I'm afraid I must give the incredibly vague and unsatisfying answer of "I have no real favorites." Outside of saying they are all my favorites. There are only four others that I've heard though, so that's not too far fetched. Although the sound quality of Say You Will puts it slightly above the rest. So, any pre-BN FM?

Hi! This is my first post here, but I've been a lurker for quite a while.
I have to say, this (Lindsey's version) is one of my absolute favorite songs. I'm sure I had heard the original prior to Lindsey's version, but had never "listened" to it before. I'm just not a fan of the Beatles, together or solo. I find Lindsey's a bit darker, but IMO, that comes from the passion with which he sings it. Me thinks he was a little overheated that night. So the story goes (as I've heard it), the ABC execs didn't like his rendition. He was called at his hotel and told he could not sing it that way and would have to 'tone it down' to sound more like the original. He got pissed and slammed his guitar against the wall of his room. At some point Kristen was on the phone with Rick Turner himself telling him the guitar was "in pieces." Lindsey didn't want to play a different guitar that night, so Rick Turner sent someone to repair that one. I'm not sure if he actually did tone it down a bit or if the "suits" gave in to his tantrum. But the gaping hole in the guitar that is visible in the video was part of the result. The guitar tech couldn't repair everything.
But anyway, I love it, give me just Lindsey and a guitar and I'm set. I haven't noticed that he was off key, but so what if he was a little. That's sometimes the risk you take with a live performance. An artist does not have the luxury of numerous retakes and "smoothing" things out as they have in the studio.

Thanks for the welcome! Glad to be here.
Ya know, I can totally see Lindsey doing something like this. Maybe it's from gossip I've heard about him through the years or just his genaral 'intenseness', but I bet he has a temper.
Oh, I remembered something else about the story I heard. Nothing significant, but I think the original story came from someone on another board who was really in to guitars. He was a friend of someone who worked for Rick Turner and this friend was witness to the call with Kristen...or something like that. It's been a long time since I read about it, so I could be off base, but what I posted was the general circulated story of what happened. Anybody else remember this? I've really only posted and kept up with postings on BN.net up to now, so that has to be where I read it.
Angie
I can certainly appreciate the Beatles, I am far from disliking them or any genre, but when someone tries to force you to listen to a certain band or kind of music because it is the best music ever made, it makes you want to find your own music, not conform to what everyone else listens to and leave it at that.
Well, mylittledemon wasn't trying to "force" you to do anything, but was just being playful. But usually when I hear a bunch of people saying of an artist, "This is the best music ever made," that generally tends to pique my interest rather than drive me away. Do you seek out only bands that everybody thinks are crap?
Anyway, how does one go through life never having heard "Here Comes The Sun"?
And I never listen to the White Album or Rumours. Does that make me a non-conformist who plays by his own rules and nobody else's? Not even his own? Weeee! Give me a banana!
No, it just makes you a bit silly. Not listening to something simply because it's popular and overexposed is just as silly as listening to it only for that reason.

Peter Jennings does sound a little less than enthusiastic in introducing Lindsey's "interpretation" of the song. If I were Lindsey, I would have said sure, I'll tone it down, and then go ahead and play my rendition anyway. Live TV, what are they gonna do? Cut to commercial, over an re-arrangement of a song?

So I wanted to comment on Here Comes The Sun. I am in love with what he did with it. I like Harrison's and everything about the Beatles of course but LB put a different spin on it and made it his own. Isn't that what being your own musician and person is about? On his own, LB has never been about playing to the commercial market so why should this one be any different? Somebody said he does what he wants to and I think that's right. Bravo to LB for what I think was a risk-taking, ballsy and beautiful dedication to George Harrison.

You know you peops who think it's sexy? I was trying to think about that too. I decided that it was sexy if he did it onstage, but if I was his wife, and in the same room with him all the time, I'd get pretty effing sick of smashy tantrums. You know, I'd be a bit frightened! And I'd probably roll my eyes, especially if he'd done it regularly, as it's now shaping up to look like he has. I'd be like "Calm down, for christs sake! You don't have to smash a bunch of sh*t! Sheesh!" And then I would roll my eyes...and think "you self absorbed bastard..."
Linds is still sexy, though. I just don't love the smashy. I like it better when he gets "oh, I'm so deep and soulful" face, on a slow song.

When was the "west palm beach" story? You know, the year? I've never heard it either.
May 18, 2004 - Say You Will concert in West Palm Beach, FL at the Sound Advice Amphitheater
I am pretty sure that more info can be found on The BN board.;)
Maybe even Alex or Kim can provide more details as they were also there.

Angie
Welcome~! Thanks for the story details. As far as this performance, I don't really remember it, but I have a tape of FM's Grammy rehearsals when they were nominated for Silver Springs. LB was awesome during the rehearsals and not as good during the real live performance. I didn't care , no one has a perfect night every night. People need to be more forgiving and get over it ;)
I've been a fan of George Harrison since I was ten years old. He was my favorite artist for the longest time, and I collected everything with his name on it because I was so moved by his art...and honestly, this version of HCTS by Lindsey is nowhere near as bad (to me) as many people here are saying it is.
Yes, George just died and it probably would have been a little more respectful to honor his version and play it close to the original in his memory, but LB's version was very, very different...in a good way. He showed a totally different side to those words. There seemed to be a lot of tension, pain, passion in the delivery that could have been how he was feeling, given the time (so close after 9/11). A lot of people had very mixed, and extremely strong, emotions at that time. I loved his performance and the way he just stood there and breathed it all out in such a harsh/rushy-like way. It was a difference that I wasn't expecting, but I liked immediately.
And I am sure George, being the person that he was, would not have been offended in the least by this performance. He may even have liked it...and if he didn't, he may have scoffed and forgotten the whole ordeal about 2 minutes afterward because to him, I'm sure, the fact that Lindsey did a song for him, and chose to present it in a new and exciting way was probably an honor in itself. George was never self-centered enough to carry on about things like that.
But anyway...I think Lindsey did a great job on one of my favorite songs of all time...its different, a little harsher, angrier, faster- but I like it.

Hmmm...I didn't know anything about that story (re: "Here Comes the Sun" performance and hole in guitar) or the one where he whines about eggs...but now that you mention these I have to admit he is only a *tad* bit whiney in the "Destiny Rules" doc. during that Stevie fight where he goes, "Jesus Christ!" He's got quite a filthy mouth, tsk tsk, and his face got all red and he seemed to be trying his very best to control himself from going into a bit of a rage there...but that's the only part I can speak of. Everywhere else he seems calm, laid-back, easygoing, and cooperative.
Maybe he's just one of those moody "male PMS" victims...I know several guys like that. Most of them are quite studious and artistic and like to be left alone, or prefer working alone. When they're around other people it's hard for them to function with the "sharing" of attention and whatnot, so they get all pissy and moody.
Or maybe Lindsey was a spoiled little boy who was finicky about his food, stomped his feet and trashed his toys to get whatever he wanted. I am not fond of such children, but they exist in numbers- and even they have their good points I suppose. :)

The West Palm Story. :p Pattie..he left during World Turning..which he never did before or after, to my knowledge. He came back onstage bleeding . I think Miss Cory put out some story about him smacking himself with his guitar backstage.

I don't think that he signed any autographs that night either. He just left right after the show.

I think that he left after the song. But I can't remember to be honest. I know for a fact that he did come back bleeding.

Hi Angie! :wavey: Welcome too! Ok, we're together finally today for a few posts. These are weird stories. So he smacked himself with the guitar? I hope it was an accident or maybe the guitar decided to fight back this time when he was about to smash it into a wall. Weird. Thanks for the story. I agree with Amber that it might be better if he just smashed them on the stage. It might be scary to actually be in the same room with him when he smashes something. I agree with Angie that it's that whole bad boy syndrome thing. The bad boys turn me on everytime. :wavey:
(Syd)
All of this made me laugh. The egg thing sounds really funny. I don't like the "bad boys" so the smashy thing really just makes me roll my eyes. I think I would expect Kiss or somebody like that to do that (or did they eat live chickens?) but the WPB thing was just last year and LB doesn't seem like the type, like Syd said. I would have been so freaked if I was his wife. Why did he make his wife call the guitar tech?

Eh, who knows. Could be she's a 'willing little one' who'll do anything to please her man and keep her piece of pie.
On the other hand, maybe she's the one who made him bleed in West Palm. Maybe he really does bleed to love her, ya know?

I'd read where he'd cut his hand while bashing around on Mick's cymbals during the end of "Go Your Own Way". Ahhh...the stuff legends are made of.
I'm just sad that Lindsey's New Year's Eve abomination was kept alive via video & audio tape. It should've been a one-time event, never to be thrashed upon us again.
"Whiney"? Lindsey? Pffftt...he DEFINED the term.

How can so many so-called Lindsey fans so passionately hate something that is so classically Lindsey? The performance defines him perfectly. For shame. And that one dude called me close-minded. The only true way to get objectivity I suppose is if you've never heard the original before. I'm special.
Just try not to be blinded by my continuous, overwhelming devotion to the thread.
The first post originally asked us all on our thoughts about Lindsey's rendition and the original; an unspoken push to compare the two. That's what we've all provided. You're opnion is based solely on hearing Lindsey's version, so not having heard the original, you're literally in no position to lecture anyone about THEIR thoughts on the song. I'm a HUGE Lindsey fan, my opinion is that his version is inferior to the original.
And yes, you're still being closed-minded, because you still have not heard the original Harrison version. Your objectivity makes you special? I believe the meaning of the word is to treat factual information without blurring or distorting it...so go listen to the original and THEN make your objective statement.

THAT'S the closed-minded part. You cannot even MAKE that statement until you've heard the original.

It would distort my view of Lindsey's version and lure me over to the dark side of only liking the original.
Again...closed minded. You're thinking like a child. You're not even willing to hear the Harrison one, and then compare the two. I have a feeling you'd like Lindsey's better, even if Christ himself told you the Harrison version was superior.

The way I see it, since the original post was talking about Lindsey's version, and didn't purposely draw any real attention to the original, and seeing as how we're in the Lindsey forum, bashing his version, bringing up the original is far from a requirement. It is a privilege, not a right.
Might wanna re-read the first post. JohnDoe specifically said it was "so far from the original." I think that was a purposeful reason to draw attention to the original, by using it as a comparison with Lindsey's. And the privilege most of us seem to have over yourself, is that we've heard the original.

My mind is open enough to know what I like and dislike.
I dislike this version of the song and--yup--it has a whole hell of a lot to do with the original version.
If someone took a Lindsey classic...say...I'm So Afraid and turned it into a upbeat, bubblegum pop song, I'd feel the same way. Maybe the singer would claim he was just channeling someone who had massive amounts of anti-depressants in his system. The point is: anyone can use artistic license to change anything to suit his/her purposes. Sometimes, it's a wonderful thing. Sometimes...not so much.
Here Comes the Sun was a gentle, hopeful song. The harshness of Lindsey's version doesn't appeal to me at all but it's an opinion on a single work. Nothing more.

Might wanna re-read my last post. I said "didn't purposely draw any real attention to the original." Just kind of in passing. I look forward to seeing the evolution of the argument over the next several months.
And by the way, model 1's are hideous and should disintegrate in a colossal, fiery inferno. OMG, LOL, OMG!!!!11! You got burned! ~-:winkwaveywavey:-~
Yeah, I did see what you wrote. "Kind of in passing?" Now you're out of points to make, it seems. There is no evolution on your end because you have nothing further to base your comments on. Go eat your Wheaties, young grasshopper.
Model 1's are hideous? Hmm. Well, that's your opinion. I for one would like to have one.

Did you misunderstand again? Johndoe mentioned it in passing. Right? Ah who cares. I can't keep up with you youngsters with your rock and roll and your telephoto cellulars. Bring back the good ol' days of barbershop quartets and Nazi warfare.
That's it? You should be fuming. Now come at me with a shovel.
HA! I'm not fuming. I find the Model 1 to be a sexy guitar. I want one for myself if I could ever afford to get one. But I'd rather have a new Les Paul or a Strat. A lot of guitar players think the Model 1 is ugly.
Youngsters? Hmpf.

Gawd. This thread is all over the place. I am the opposite of you, Grandmaster. I have heard the original but not Lindsey's version so I really shouldn't make any comment at all. I did tho. So I take it back until I hear L's version. Maybe I'll like L's version. What somebody said about a song being so in your head that it's hard to like anybody else's version is true. And we're talking about George Harrison! Grandmaster, we need to hook up and listen to them together back to back and then we can really let loose on this thread. Btw, I love you. And for Lindsey smacking his bad self with that guitar? Wtf? My money is on the wife who made him bleed and I have a guess as to why. And nope, it's not coz of Stevie.
