Christy started a thread some time back about the rumours that he was the new Bond, but now it's official.

Daniel Craig Unveiled As New James Bond

LONDON - Blond. James Blond. Daniel Craig, a 37-year-old, sandy-haired Englishman was introduced Friday as the new James Bond, ending months of speculation. He'll star in "Casino Royale," directed by Martin Campbell, due out next year.

"I had a couple of martinis when I found out," said Craig, who replaces
Pierce Brosnan in the role of the suave spy.

Craig is the first blond actor and only the second Englishman to star as Agent 007 in the movie series. His selection was revealed as he was whisked down the Thames River on Friday aboard a military boat to a waterside news conference.

"It is a huge iconic figure in movie history, and those things don't come along very often," Craig said.

Producer Michael G. Wilson said 200 actors had been considered for the role, but Craig was the only one who had been offered it. Craig said he only found out Monday that he definitely had the part.

Speculation about the new Bond had also included Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.

At the packed press conference inside a Royal Navy facility on the Thames, the new Bond fielded questions from newspaper and television reporters, tabloid gossip columnists and a journalist from the Ministry of Defense magazine.

Craig brushed aside questions about supermodel Kate Moss and actress
Sienna Miller — both tabloid fixtures whom he has reportedly dated.

"I'm not going to get into that," he said.

"I understand that doing this doesn't help" preserve his privacy, Craig added. "We'll take it one day at a time."

Of the other five actors to play 007, only
Roger Moore is English-born.
Sean Connery is Scottish,
George Lazenby is Australian,
Timothy Dalton was born in Wales and Brosnan is Irish.

Relatively unknown outside Britain, Craig appeared in the landmark 1990s British TV drama "Our Friends in the North" and in films including "The Mother," "Enduring Love" and "Layer Cake."

His screen credits also include "Road to Perdition," "Sylvia" and this year's thriller "The Jacket" with
Adrien Brody. He is now filming another thriller, "The Visiting," with
Nicole Kidman.

Ian Fleming's first-ever Bond novel, originally published in 1953, "Casino Royale" is one of the few Bond adventures not to feature the MI6 gadget-maker Q. It was previously filmed as a 1967 spoof starring Peter Sellers.

Campbell — who directed Brosnan's first Bond film, "GoldenEye," in 1995 — said the movie would be "tougher and grittier" than previous films, with "more character and less gadgets." He said the story would begin with Bond first becoming a "00" agent.

"It is really the arc in which he becomes Bond," Campbell said. "He starts out just having earned his double-0 stripes and comes out at the end the Bond we know and love."

"A lot of the embryonic Bond things will come out in the film — how he gets the Aston Martin, how he mixes a Martini."

"Casino Royale" is due to being filming in January in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and at Pinewood Studios near London. Campbell said the budget likely will exceed $100 million.

Lousy choice if you ask me. Not who I would have picked at all.

The picture is kind of small, he looks like that red haired dude that used to be on NYPD Blue. I myself prefer dark hair when it comes to my 007's. :D

He's not the prettiest guy around, but he's a good actor. I thought Layer Cake was awesome  .

He'd be a much better choice. It appears he has a pair of great green eyes unless they have been enhanced in the photo I saw. Way yummier than DC.

Like Marissa said, he's sex incarnate. I think he's perfect for Bond. I'll never understand the Jackman for Bond thing; Jason is a big proponent for him. I like him, but as Bond? Fug no.

I can't believe I'm not familiar with him. Bond is supposed to be "sex incarnate" so that is a good trait for someone playing him. I've never been a huge Bond fan but I did see Goldfinger a little while ago. No one will ever be Sean Connery, he was so beautiful in that movie. Just gorgeous and charming.

He's on Nip/Tuck, but I remember you said that show grosses you out.

To be honest, the only Bond movies I've ever really liked where the Brosnan ones. I thought they were great (for the most part).

Brosnan makes me want to vomit. I saw the last one... what the hell was it called? With that hobag Halle Berry? Ugh. What a worthless piece of crap that movie was!

 I haven't seen any of those. I generally don't watch Bond movies because they're style over substance, but not my kind of style.

Who would make a better Bond? Daniel Craig.

I think he's a great choice personally. Most Brits I've talked to are very happy with this choice. Craig's a great actor and he has rough edges too, so he should make Bond a little grittier. Most people I know weren't happy with the thought of Aussies like Jackman and McMahon being Bond. James Bond is the only proper British movie hero we have. Most of the time Brits are confined to playing the villain in blockbuster movies.

I don't know, I never looked at it that way. I never really thought that actually being British was dealbreaker (for me, at least, I know sentiment is different over there). Sort of like with Batman; I don't care if the actor playing him is German, British, or American. Though we certainly lucked out with Christian Bale. :D

Me, too. Love Bond, love Brosnan. Thought he was spot on. Perfect. Some of the other Bonds are amusing, too.
I hope this guy is good, but i'm not into blondes for Bond, and he looks a bit mouse faced...(features congregated towards center of face, with long skinny nose).
But he must be okay, or else they wouldn't have picked him, assuming there's no Timothy Dalton factor in place.

I loved Pierce too but Connery is by far my fave. Roger Moore is great too. No one wore a safari suit like him.
Bond is massive in the UK. There seems to be a Bond film on terrestrial TV every week, and people watch them too!
The Connery films are a bit too dated for him to be my fave, plus he is not as "manly" looking as the others. He is my second favorite, though. And the "dated" factor often also works in a Bond movie's favor for me to watch it. You know, the camp factor? Although, the seventies ones are awesome for the cheese. But Roger Moore's square jaw and robotic acting get on my nerves. So it's a trade off....The only ones that no one should watch, of course, are Dalton's.

Well apparently Dalton wanted to make Bond less camp and more serious, closer to how Ian Fleming had written him in the books. Shame it didn't work!

Connery not manly enough? Look at that rug on his chest and tell me he ain't manly!

Oh, is that what Dalton said? He wasn't "too serious", he was "uncharismatic"

Wow, that is quite the manly chest!!! I'm referring more to the set of his facial features.

I think that slight androgyny makes him sexier hence my above comment that Craig isn't "pretty" enough. I know the Connery films are dated but he was just so frikkin' cool in a fantasy sort of way.

Bring back Pierce Brosnan or Timothy Dalton!!!!

Yep, I'm not holding out much hope for DC being a decent James Bond..oh well....now Ewan McG would have been my fav choice:thumbsup:simply because he comes across as a real charmer/ladies man and thats half of what JB is about. And the scottish accent is rather yummy

His features were uh..."delicate" or probably more like "cute". Yeah, he was cute when he was younger. He's not feminine or anything, he's just not as square jawed and steely eyed as the others.

:blob1:  :woohoo:  Not because of Daniel Craig choice (I've never cared much about James Bond) but because this soap opera is over. Now shoot the movie that hopefully I won't have to see. Anyway, all my respect to Samantha Bond who quit Moneypenny role, to be loyal to Brosnan.
