View Full Version : US Festival performance appreciation

I'm sure most of you have seen Stevie's US Festival concert a million times, but until yesterday I had only seen a few songs. I now have a DVD of the entire show.
I have to say this is a remarkable performance by Stevie, maybe one of the best I've ever seen! She is so confident, playful, and even a bit spontaneous (and of course high as a kite). She did Stand Back before anyone knew it--she would never preview a song these days.
She is slighty messy--strange banter with the crowd, I think she screws up Gypsy in the middle by singing the final la-la's, seems to go off and talk to Jimmy Iovine (I think that's him) for a few minutes in the middle of Gold and Braid, and starts that song by babbling about her tambourine.
But I think that all adds to the greatness of the show. It's a real rock and roll performance, nothing like the carefully scripted stuff she does now. I love her graceful performances these days, but boy is there a difference!
This show is a gem. My favorite moments are when she throws the tambourine down for two seconds and then picks it up, when she pretends like she's going to jump in the crowd, and her kick-ass Angel.
Anyone else love this show?

Other than Gypsy (when Sharon ruins the hell out of the high note) I think the show is top notch. I can watch it over and over....it never gets old.

Yeah, I noticed that about Gypsy...ouch.
I also love that Lori dances around like a spaz and Sharon even shakes it a bit during some of the songs.

I love this concert. To me, it's nice to see a great outside venue concert from Stevie - you get the cool wind in her hair and capes, the great performances and lots of gab from La Nicks.

Yeah...great show. She loved performing in front of several hundred thousand people.
The part in Edge of Seventeen where she jumps down off the stage in the front and runs is so cool.

I have two performances only. I sure would love to see that Angel. Anyway, the two I have are pretty much as described. Strange banter, a very free wheeling playful stevie. Very good, although one of the songs isn't my fave (Nightbird).

My fave part is when she's talking and says she is having such a good song she wants to play all night:
"We could do everyone's favorite songs. Throw in a little Rolling Stones... A little Turtles... They're freaking out backstage, cuz they know I'm serious!"
Also, the first (ever) performance of Stand Back:
"What does that mean, you may ask??? Quicksand. And you're the only 200,000 people in the world who'll know that."

I bought it on ebay. Got US Festival and the HBO concert for about $20 total. Don't know if that's a good deal or a ripoff or if I could have gotten them free somewhere, but it was worth it to have both on DVD.
I never knew the entire US Festival concert was available. I had a tape a long time ago, but it only had Outside The Rain, Stand Back, and SDMHA.

If anyone wants the US Festival show I can open it back up on dimeadozen for download. It does take a bit of time to download as it's a large file.

No need to bother, the same exact copy (in very good quality) that was available for download once at Dime has now been posted to David's Fleetwood Mac Bit Torrent tracker at http://www.throwndown-videos.net/bittorrents/.
Me and David are currently seeding it. :wavey: Too bad I can't help for a long time, for my holiday starts tomorrow.

I never knew the entire US Festival concert was available. I had a tape a long time ago, but it only had Outside The Rain, Stand Back, and SDMHA.Yeah, Showtime broadcast the second US Festival with abbreviated sets, including those three Stevie songs. Plus, Westwood One simulcast the broadcast. But the whole Stevie set was never available commercially & still isn't to this day.
There's a lot more interest in the US Festivals these days, I'm noticing. Sites are going up with people's anecdotes & memories, & even tapes of the shows themselves are cropping up in trade circles. Somewhere out there is video of Fleetwood Mac's entire set in 1982. That's why Tom Petty wrote: "The waiting is the hardest part."

I asked my Dad if I could go. He said, "Yeah, as long as one of your brothers takes you" (I was fourteen at the time). My brothers were all busy, but my brother's best friend (they were both in the Navy) wanted to go. He was a Czech named Boris. He drove up to my house from San Diego and picked me up in his teeny tiny MG convertible. On the way down, I asked him to buy cigarettes for me- he did (faggy ones, too- I won't name the brand because I'm not interested in giving people more ammo on me than they already possess around here...).
Anycrap..... We got down to San Diego and packed everything up and went in his friends Winnebago up to Glen Helen Park for the three days of the US Festival. Boris's friend girlfriend was paralyzed from the waist down. So, I chauffered her around the festival in her wheelchair. The whole place was grass- at the end of the three days that grass was thrashed- and, as a natural amphitheater, it's got a steep slope. So, she really needed someone to help get her around. For my services, she hooked me up with pot, shrooms, beer, amyl nitrate, quaaludes, hash, and I smoked opium (my one and only time- great high). Needless to say, this fourteen-year old had a greeeaaat time. The metal day was kind of a yawn, musically (Scorpions and Quiet Riot- barf). At the time, I thought it was odd that they put Stevie on the same day with Bowie, Missing Persons, and Berlin. Although, the 83 Festival didn't really have that many "rock" bands. She would have definitely been a sore thumb on Friday's show with Flock of Seagulls, Wall of Voodoo, and Oingo Boingo. Eh, what do I know.
I didn't have a clue about being up in the front. I thought where I was sitting was fine. The music was SO LOUD!!! People were seriously packed in the front half of the lawn. We had scoped out a little area with an ice chest, banana chairs, and blankets.
I had a pair of lemon chiffon yellow Op cord shorts that were REALLY short. I wore them on Stevie day and, with the grass super trashed, there was dust and dirt everywhere. By the time Stevie performed after dusk, my lemon yellow shorts were now almost black from the dirt. I had one of those cheesy blanket/tarp thingys with the silver reflecting junk on one side to beat the sun glare. During Stevie's show it was getting a little chilly and I wrapped that sucker around me to warm me up. I think I used it as shawl wings during "Edge of Seventeen". Yes, I was quite the queen.
That weekend was my official transition from adolescent to teenager. Good times.

It was advertised like hell on Mtv back then and it was the beginning of summer and I really wanted to "get out", so I went. My parents never paid any attention to me, so they didn't give a rats ass about the conditions I would be in. Besides, that era was so much cooler and permissive than these days. I was more of an all-around music fan back then, so I wasn't as Steviefied as I would later become.
I totally remember those shorts.
They were totally whoreanus. Totally.

I love the US Festival. Not because Stevie's vocals are amazing..cause frankly, I don't think her voice was that on, that night, but her whole performance makes up for it. How Still My Love is the highlight IMO. She gets so into it. Gypsy would be great if Sharon didn't mess up the highnote like some mentioned. And Stevie's wild antics during Edge of Seventeen are hilarious. My favorite quote: "If you ever you feel like you don't matter, let me tell you something. Ah-ha!! I was there on Oingo Boingo day. I was SOOO the Alt-Rock-Head in the early 80s... wouldn't listen to anything but KROQ... The Cure, English Beat, Flock, etc. I was 24 at the time. Drove my b/f, his brother and their friend in my first car, a 1969 Chevy Impala, which got a blow out in the fast lane of the freeway going there. That was fun. We spent the night in it... it was that big. We got way stoned in the campground. The porta-toliets stunk like crazy. By the time we got in, the ampitheater was filled about halfway up so we sat on what was left of the grass. It was hotter than he*l. Souvenier spray water bottles were $5 each. The people in the little town of Devore, the ones at the gas station and little market, looked like they didn't know what hit 'em but were happy with all the business. Yea, so they brought water cannons in and were soaking people down in the audience. If someone walked by and squirted you with their water bottle you thanked them for it... that's how hot it was. I remember seeing the dust about shoulder high in front of the stage. We didn't bother to go down there for that reason. The Clash was the closing act for the Alt Rock day. Before they came on, (it was nighttime) a helicopter hovered over with a big neon green spaceship tethered from a wire. Then an alien came on the big screen by the stage and made some sort of speech.
Tower, have you found that message board for people who went to the US Festivals?

Unless he got it recently.Right. That guy doesn't have the full video performance. But some of the other acts have full videos out there -- that's what I mean by the renewed interest in both US Festivals & things surfacing.
I believe it's only a matter of time before the whole FM video gets torrented or sold on DVD-R. It'll pop up. I went to both US Festivals & they were both hot, dirty, scummy festivals. Fleetwood Mac had about 75,000 people hang around for their show, which was the night before everyone had to get back to work or school. Stevie played to more people but that was because they were hanging around for Bowie, who hadn't toured for a long time & was really the talk of that festival. However, Stevie oddly enough really won over a lot of the audience; people in the crowd said she was "passionate." One guy said that, vocally, she "bit off more than she could chew."

 Wow. There are some longtime fans in here. This is the place to come for great stories. I love the Stevie from back then when she was on everything but her feet. Like talking to someone in the middle of a song. I would pay to see her do that now. Or for her to say something completely crazy. I'm glad she's not still doing all the drugs but something made her put on kick ass shows back then. This is the best quote, "If you ever you feel like you don't matter, let me tell you something. To me, you're the only thing in this whole world that matters." It really made me smile. We need something in our signature so I think this one is it. I envy you for getting to see those shows and that time in her life. We saw a few Say You Will shows and she was really awesome but they are very different from some of the videos and dvds I have from like 20 years ago. I wish everything wasn't so rehearsed now. :distress:

so, I've finally downloaded it - after 3 days and need some advice on converting to some format I can view. It looks like they are BUP, IFO and VOB file extensions? Help.

I had to talk about this..because it's just my favorite show. Her face just shines from the first song, until she leaves the stage. There are so many little quotes that are priceless, " I will hand deliver it...We will...Sorta like girl scout cookies" The band introductions, when she jumps up on the drum kit and does her litte dance to the beginning drums of S.B. She's energetic, dancing, bouncing, and it seems that after every song, she loses a piece of clothing. Like six layers at the first song, and then by the end, it's the leotard, skirt, and boots. And her big grin. By far...my favorite Stevie... Totally wish I were there. Wasn't born yet, but you all have some great stories to share...

You don't want to or can't burn it? If you just want to view it on your computer, I suggest you use Media Player Classic: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm. It can play many audio and video files, including those .vob files.

The VLC player (free download) will do it, or use the DVD player on the Mac, and got to File/open VIDEO_TS folder.

Sorry to bump a dying thread, but it occured to me that the US Festival might be Stevie's last live performance of Angel. Is this right?

I have an obsessive love with Lether And Lace from this show. Don't ask me to explain why...just do.

OMG ROTF LMFAO  ! I'm watching this right now. What is that obscure hand waving gesture she does during HSML? That so does not go with the song. And she doesn't know the difference beteween left and right??

I think she was doing that to be cute. When she says, "Don't tell me to turn left off the freeway, I'll turn right,"...correct me if i'm wrong, but can't you ONLY turn right?...
