Oh, Sharon, I hate you right now. :distress:
I think I will go with Skynyrd. I love the Eagles, but they are more soft AC pop than rock IMO. Skynyrd is good old hard country rock. And I love that.

Skynyrd for me. I like the Eagles, but some of there songs are very boring to me. And I don't find them all that interesting live, either. LS has always been very entertaining to me.

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Both of them make me cringe, but The Eagles are unbearable. Henley & Co. are just boring hacks, imo.

I picked the Eagles because they have more songs I like. Many of which remind me of easy summer living. What does that mean? It means it's hot, and I'm driving with the top down to the river with my friends, and we have not a care in the world the whole summer. We're also thin and tan, and we wear our swimsuits everywhere. Has this ever happened? Not really. I like Skynard too, though.
Same here.

The Eagles. Aren't Lynyrd Skynyrd a bunch of racists?
the late/great Ronnie Van Zandt had plenty of friends who were of color...So no, That is just a stigma attached to LS due to their southern roots...And their fans.
I went with LS (Sorry ya Eagles nutswingers)...More guitar oriented than the Eagles, Plus their song "Simple Man" owns (aka smokes) anything the Eagles ever did.

Eagles, and not just because of Stevie.
Round 18 should be interesting. How will you vote?
Should be interesting, indeed. My prediction: The people who are voting on musical grounds will mostly go for Skynyrd. Most other folks will choose The Eagles simply because Stevie screwed half of them.
I'm sure you can guess where my vote went. I may be able to count the great Skynyrd songs on one hand, but at least I have to use more than one finger.
As Miss Vicky already noted: "Look, I've had a long night, and I hate the ****ing Eagles, man."
(And Sharon, bless your heart for spelling Lynyrd Skynyrd correctly...)
Eagles. Stevie's pretty much a member.
I think you mean she's seen the member of pretty much... ahh, these kinds of jokes are just going be too easy in this thread...

My favorite thing about this is how sometimes when certain people vote for some things over others, they say it's because they know music waaaay better than other people, or that people who "really" know music will vote for such and such. It cracks me up when people choose to quantify their particular musical taste using that "pseudo expert" reasoning. I'll have to do that myself more often. I mean, you know, why not? I played instruments and sang for years. Surely I'm an "expert".

I'll assume you're talking about my prediction about how the votes will go, and if so, you're reading a hell of a lot into it that isn't there. I didn't say anything about people who "know" music "better" than anyone else.
The fact is, there are two ways that people vote in these little face-offs. They either vote for musical reasons and choose the artists whose music they like more, or they vote for non-musical reasons and choose an artist based on some association or another (Neal voted for Neil Young because they share a first name, someone voted for Emmylou because she's associated with Gram Parsons, and a number of people have voted for The Eagles because they've been associated with Stevie). Given that this is just a for-fun poll on an Internet message board, there's nothing more or less legitimate about either tactic. My prediction was simply that most of the people who vote because of the music will pick Skynyrd. I didn't say anything about "experts," and I think we already had the thread in another forum about how there really aren't any objective standards to "quantify" music taste or decree that one band's music is "better" than any other's.
As for why I think most people who will vote based on the music will vote for Skynyrd: For one, Skynyrd strikes me as a slightly more dynamic and arresting band who would appeal to more of the music nerds who post here. Second, I think the people who tend to vote based on the music also realize that a lot of people will be voting for the Eagles simply because of Stevie, so they'll vote for Skynyrd just to even things out and make things more interesting.

It boggles my mind, too, and I think the vast majority of those sales are American (more the vast than the majority might otherwise be, anyway). I don't know that the Eagles have as much of a following outside the US as some of the other top-sellers.

Feh, I always thought that was a joke anyway. I don't consider "Greatest Hits" as a proper album.

Yes indeed. I'm not sure what the worldwide stats are beyond Thriller and the Eagles, but the American top ten is, well, always interesting to ponder. Here's a list of the American top 40, actually, that I just found:
http://members.aol.com/PaulHry/music/riaa.html
Edit: Here's another way of looking at the list, with many more albums included: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_sold_albums.html

Regardless, it's sold a hell of a lot of copies. Seems a bit unfair to discount it as champion just because it's a collection of previously released material. The numbers are still there.

Ah we agree on one thing, amber!
That's the absolute best thing they ever recorded.
But from there we disagree again because the rest of the Eagles material would not win over the best Skynyrdtracks.
So Lynyrd Skynyrd is my choice.

That is the most inexplicable thing I have ever heard in my life. Including aliens and loch ness monsters.
Why is that? Can you explain it...in a musical way? Sesly, I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I'm just really, really, shocked and dumbfounded. I can understand if it's not someone's favorite. But hating it? That's more difficult.
Because, IMO, the song serves only one purpose: "Hey people, we can harmonize!"
So what? If that's all that it took to impress me, I'd be listening to barbershop music.

Can you harmonize? Like that?
What do you like? Guitars?
I mean, what you said is actually a good point. I just don't know the rest of your point, and cannot imagine it at this time. uh, you like Walter Egan, right? yeah.
The lyrics of that song don't impress me and there's no music to speak of.
Can I harmonize? No. But then, that's not in my job description. Yes, I like guitars, and bass, and drums and... music.
Yes I like Walter Egan, that much goes without saying. But I fail to see what he has to do with this conversation. I also highly doubt that you know much about his career beyond "Magnet and Steel."

Seriously, people are always quick to demonize the South, but racist a$$holes exist everywhere, not just here  But, the rep sticks because the South fought to keep slavery. It did not matter that the North treated its blacks just as almost as horrendously as the ones enslaved in the South. It is just the South that gets the blame

Oh, no. I don't. But, what do you like? And why don't you like this? Is the mystery that must be solved by Amber. I know you are a Lindsey fan...he's great. Great guitar, lyrics, and production capabilities. So, why don't you like this?
Vocal harmonies are nice, but they rank near the bottom on my list of musical priorities. As you suspected, lyrics rank #1. The lyrics of this song are pleasant, but not especially memorable. #2 as you might suspect, is guitar. I just listened to this song for the first time in ages, and I didn't even realize there was a guitar on it.
If a song has forgettable lyrics, it damn well better include a great guitar part.
If a song has great lyrics, then it is excusable to have forgettable instrumentation.
Also, I don't like acapella music. I realize this song technically isn't acapella, but it might as well be for all the effect that acoustic guitar has.
For the record, I don't hate <i>all</i> Eagles songs. I actually really like "Lying Eyes."

Ever heard Warren Zevon's song "Play It All Night Long"? You might like it.
Take a gander at these lyrics:
Grandpa pissed his pants again
He don't give a damn
Brother Billy has both guns drawn
He ain't been right since Vietnam
Sweet home Alabama
Play that dead band's song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long
Daddy's doing Sister Sally
Grandma's dying of cancer now
The cattle all have brucellosis
We'll get through somehow
Sweet home Alabama
Play that dead band's song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long
I'm going down to the Dew Drop Inn
See if I can drink enough
There ain't much to country living
Sweat, piss, jizz and blood
Sweet home Alabama
Play that dead band's song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long

The meaning is: When the Alabama thing was going on, he did what he could for rightness.
And his point is:
We spawned Richard Nixon, so, when that went bad, did we do what we could?
ie, it's not all the "southern man's fault". We all could be culpable for corruption and bigotry at any moment.
And perhaps he even means:
That he fought against the Alabama stuff that happened. -
Did all of us Northerners properly fight against Nixon???

If you tell me it is an African American gentleman in a suit, I will roll off this chair.
Thanks so much for explaining, I totally appreciate it. :) I honestly rarely understand the point of view of the "lyrics lover" or even the "guitar lover". Although I can recognize when both are present, it just doesn't inform my opinion, or my tastes, as much. God, I'd take a song with a great bass/drum part over guitar and lyrics, any day. And a great vocal, that's a given. If I wanted great lyrics I would:
A) Listen to Bob Dylan or...
B) Read a book.
Thanks again! :wavey:
I don't think I'm entirely sure I get where you yourself are coming from, Amber, if we're parsing out the parts of music that different people like more than others. Is the rhythm most important to you, or is it the harmonies/vocals? Or both?
Either way, that's really interesting. I think most people who listen to pop/rock music tend to fall under your "lyrics lover" or "guitar lover" headings.
Ever heard Warren Zevon's song "Play It All Night Long"? You might like it.

Bullwhips keep on cracking
Carry me home to see my crosses burnin' fast
Singing songs about the black man
I miss my Southern Man once again
And I think it's a sin
Well I heard mister Young screamin' about her
Well I heard ole Neil cut her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
Lily Belle don't need him around anyhow
In Birmingham they love the governor
Swear by God I'm gonna cut him down!
Now the screamin' does not bother me
Muscle Shoals gonna come at last
Tell the truth
Sweet home Alabama
Where the mansions are so tall and white
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, Southern change gonna come at last
Here I come Southern Man
Sweet home Alabama
Oh sweet cotton baby
Where the skies are so blue
And the black man's comin' round
Sweet Home Alabama
How long? How long?
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Yea, yea Southern Man's got the answer

Second, I think the people who tend to vote based on the music also realize that a lot of people will be voting for the Eagles simply because of Stevie, so they'll vote for Skynyrd just to even things out and make things more interesting.
