I love this song. I have always loved this song. I know, it's kind of countryish, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It's a clean, simple, pretty song about love & loss & regret. The music fits the lyrics very well.

The harmonies on this verse are amazing:

"You never promised me a ring made out of diamonds
A band of gold you said was all you could buy
You never said I'd be a rich man's lady
And oh my darling...no, you never lied"

Love this verse:

"And now you're gone...and I'm alone, and I'm so lonely
Nothing seems to be the same
One day I turned around and you no longer loved me
In my life there's been a big change"

It's definitely interesting to me that she wrote this in 1965. I don't think Stevie can see the future or anything :D but still interesting. OH! I loved it live on boots from the Enchanted Tour. Just beautiful.

100 points to whoever gets choice #5 in the poll.

This is one of my favorites, too. I love the last verse especially.

Well I've got all these things,
all these things but a small gold band
on my finger
on my left hand

I love how she did all of the harmonies, too. Great pick!

Three Reasons I Love This Song:

1) It's my mom's favorite Stevie song.

2) It's on Street Angel

3) I love the vocals, the lyrics, the music....everything about it.

The first time i discovered Rose Garden was when I saw it on the Enchanted Tour and I did really like it. I don't even remember listening to it on Enchanted box set when that came out, but I do really like it. It made a great interlude to Sleeping Angel as well.

4 Stars.

I chose the single white rose - only because I hate red roses!

But I love this song - and I'd echo what Paula wrote in her first post. Simple, sweet, and bittersweet. Especially poignant when you know that she wrote it before she ever hit it big. How did she know.... ?

I think her vocal on SA is extremely weak. However, I like the lyrics and think the song was great live.

Yay! You rock!
I know.
The tune is gross and not pretty to me.
The world tragic comes to mind. Sounds like something I'd hear at a horrible country show and feel the need to leave the room immediately. God forbid any non-fans heard this song! I’d never hear the end of it.

I think I have great Stevie song sense.

At least she wrote DA and RG and not the pitiful CRY WOLF. Any three year old can tell you what Cry Wolf means. I just don't like it. Can't. Won't. Yuck.

But at least we both love Kick It :xoxo:

I gave Rose Garden a dozen beautiful red roses. I love this song. I love the country vibe, I love the lyrics, I love the simplicity. I know the lyrics might seem trite but Stevie wrote them so long ago and they actually came true. The song makes me feel a little sad every time I hear it.

I'm suprised all you country lovers lke this so much.
Because most country singers I know, or have ever heard, would leave this vocal in Stevie's Glitter-Studded, Fabulously Catered Dust!!!

If I want to hear someone do a country song....
It will rarely be Stevie post 19eighty.....hrmm....6.5?

And the lyrics aren't that good either.

The whole song reminds me of something really, really, FLAT.

And the lyrics and/or the tune aren't good enough for me to tell if SOMEONE ELSE could have made it better.

I assume someone could have made it sound better,
but then I imagine that that version would have SUCKED too!

I mean, give it to Emmylou, Bonnie (Tylers and Raitts) , Dolly, Linda, Billie, Lindsey, Your Mom, The Guy Down the Road, Bette Midler, Doris Day, Shirley Muldowney, Norma Rae, Gloria, Baby Jane, and Pavoratti, - Maybe even one of the Juddsbarf, or a Dixie Chickhurl -
and it could still be crappy.
Although it could sound waaaaay better. :sorry:

I think that is why her Enchanted live versions kick a$$.

I chose a single white rose. Not a STELLAR song, but so simple and sweet. So summing up her choices, IMO. One of the last songs that choked me up upon hearing it for the first time, and getting the lyrics. It's not dippy, just sentimental and true. Live it was phenomenal.

on my list of gross and not pretty things, well... this song isn't on it. :p

on my first listen of Street Angel, Rose Garden was tied for Mariel's Favorite Song with Greta. when Enchanted came out, i was so psyched that it was on there. pretty, simple, yes.

Rose Garden is one of Stevie's greatest musical accomplishments. It is a true gem, a full-fledged country-western song and I wish it was still a part of her set. The Rock A Little demo, which I am particularly fond of, is beautiful. I'm amazed that this song was written in 1965. Stevie would have been only sixteen or seventeen years of age. I wonder if she wrote the music with that Goya guitar her parents gave her as a birthday gift.

I detest this song. It is dreary, flat, and lacks any magic at all. The melody grates, the lyrics are doggerel, the vocals a bagpipe drone, the arrangement pure tedium. The only thing that comes close to this bottom-of-the-barrel Stevie is For What It's Worth. I mean, Jesus, don't get me started....

There are many people who seem to dismiss "Rose Garden" just because it's part of despised "Street Angel" album. As a long time fan of "Street Angel" I find "Rose Garden" to be one of the prettiest songs in Stevie's career. Of course, it's country song but there's nothing wrong about this fact. I can't imagine this song being wrapped in synth arrangements. It's just beautiful, straightforward love song that communicates its messages through simplistic yet affective musical and lyrical aspects. I've always thought that Stevie should record all-country album. Simple acoustic arrangements (which usually are tied with country music) help to enhance the beauty of the lyrical content and make it more accessible for the listners.

I like Rose Garden, it's simple, well-written and yearning. There is a short demo that is sung in her younger voice that makes me think Rose Garden would've been a good song for that never to be second Buckingham Nicks album. It is a little flat on Street Angel (although I like that album a lot). I can't help but think of "so to the red rose grows the passion" on the Wild Heart and how wonderful her singing is on that particular tune.

I've always kinda liked this song on the album, but if I ever heard a demo with a vocal from the early or mid '70s--with a young, earnest vocal--I'd probably prefer the song that way.

Same here!

I used to skip over this song until I watched some Woodstock clips on youtube and also the storytellers show...and when I listened to Rose Garden I couldn't believe I had skipped over it so many times...I never took the time to realize what a great song it is.

My favorite part, during live versions at least, is this verse;

And it's got roses dangling down to the ground

The way her voice kind of changes and goes up and down and Sharon's harmony - especially on to the ground (sorry yall, wish I could explain this in fancy music people language) makes me melt. There's just something about her voice there...makes it extra special to me.
