Cry Wolf Doing the Best that I can(Escape from Berlin) is one of her best songs of the last 20 years, and one of the ones the Europop production of Rupert Hines really worked for .

I completely agree... it is one of Stevie's 'masterpieces'.. i put it right up there with the likes of "Beautiful Child", "Sara", "Beauty And The Beast", "Trouble In Shangri-La", etc... and i totally mean that

Whole Lotta Trouble
David

To sing blues -- even pandering elevator blues like this -- you should not be a 1990-era Stevie Nicks!
Back in 1975 & 1976 (& again in the early to mid 1980s), Stevie could have sung some really good blues & blues-rock. I'm sorry we don't have much of that on record. Instead, we have inanities like Mick the Screecher on our reissues.
She sings some good blues on that recording of her club concert with Les Dudek from Bodega Bay in 1985. But the sound quality needs to be better on that.
Anyway, long way to say: Whole Lotta Trouble really sucks. I don't pay much attention to Stevie lyrics anyway (I guess because I read Chuck Dickens), but some of these words are of absolutely no aesthetic value:
Would you stop for a second/I bet you could think for a minute
This could be a whole lotta trouble, a whole lotta trouble, a whole lotta trouble for you/Would you change your mind/At the very last minute
blah blah blah . . . . this is just filler. To extrapolate anything personal out of this filler is to hyperinterpret to the point of daffiness. In the greatest blues, lyrics aren't all that toweringly essential anyway -- they serve a specific purpose in terms of allowing the vocalist to focus style & phrasing (think of Peter Green's lyrics to "I Loved Another Woman" or some of his other songs) But for self-proclaimed poet Stevie Nicks, she solicits our attention to her words, so if they're rotten, she must pay the piper & risk our criticism.

I remember reading some stuff about her talking about Whole Lotta Trouble. And i guess she really likes this song because it is one of the few songs that stayed the way it was as she wrote it.
.......good thing they dont let her do that anymore. :D

True - but it was hidden in mysterious and provocative prose like "she was dark at the top of the stair and she called to me" - as opposed to "get some ribbons and some bows" "your back out on the road again for a million reasons, well your back ot on the road again"

And that glorious line "She depends on her music like a husband."
That is the Stevie that I despise; the one who writes songs about how hard her rock and roll lifestyle is. Fug. And when she starts with that "I'm a poet" crap, I get the dry heaves.

Me, too. Weird. I mean, I know everyone is suprised when others don't like songs they like, but this song is so...simple. I mean, I can understand not loving it, but hating it? Weird. You know, it's just some nice, clear words, with a nice pretty melody and vocal. no big. There's nothing really strange or bad in it. Nothing earth shatteringly great, either. (although i really like the notes chosen for the melody). Nothing classicly "self absorbed, bad lyrics Stevie." The vocals are fine. The production is simple, it highlights the vocal, it's very spare.
I JUST DON'T GET IT, JIMMEH!!!
And when people say "C'mon, Cry Wolf????" I say - that's one of the least lame lyrics Stevie has ever sung, and yes, I know she didn't write it. I find "Cry Wolf" universal - everyone knows what that means, it's very clear. :woohoo:

I love the music and the vocals. I think it's very powerful actually. Maybe people don't like it because it's not full of vague metaphors...
The piano arrangement is beutiful and I can relate to the lyrics, especially the part about being out of sympathy. I've put up with a lot of sh*t with past lovers so I can relate to the whole concept of crying wolf. "Find yourself somebody new to catch you when you fall". Damn straight! lol
