Music and Conversation with Jim Conley - 1981
(quote also appears on "Rock Year - 1977")(about Gold Dust Woman)"I wrote that in Arizona when I was real sick.. after an operation under the Indian Mountains. So if you listen to it like that...I had an operation...I was in bed for five weeks so I just played my guitar and looked up at the Camelback Mountain."

I just found this quote and have never heard anything about this operation. Does anyone know anything more?

Very interesting quote, Christine (it's great to see you, by the way). I've never read that before.

Hmm... I wonder if this was after the breast augmentation surgery, which I believe would have been right around that time (early 1976).

The Rock Years things ran on KMET. There were a bunch of them. In some others, Stevie talks about wanting to be the most elegant rock 'n' roll singer of all (as opposed to stomping around in tight spandex).

I always assumed that illness (we were just talking about the illnesses that created Sisters Of The Moon & Gold Dust Woman) was part of her ennui/illness from touring on that first 1975 tour that wore her down. However, it does fit the time frame of her boob job, so maybe that was it.

This sounds more likely. I think GDW was at least in part written before she joined FM - she says this in one of the documentaries about Rumours.

It was some article that I read in one of those old fanzines. She also mentions that all of her doctors are in AZ. She said that she did not want to show her Dad the BN cover and that it was under her bed for 5 weeks while she recovered from an ovarian cyst operation. Not exactly in those words but something like that.

I know nothing about where the scar would be or if she would have one, but if she did, wouldn't it show in those pics where she shows her stomach.

I felt her up, yes. :D

I did an EKG on someone the other day. I went to lift her breast to place the electrode & it didn't move. Her boob was solid as a rock. I was totally flabbergasted - I had never seen or touched a fake boob before.

I didn't say anything, I was trying to be all professional. She goes "I have breast implants, will the test still work OK?" I thought to myself "yeah, no sh*t you have implants, I figured that out, thanks." They weren't all that large, but they freaked me out - why would anyone want 2 stiff hard masses stuck on their chest? No offense if anyone here has them, but I just don't get it.

BTW - LOVE the new sig, Curty! :xoxo:

I think it's a good six weeks before you can do anything really physical. I think it also depends on the placement of the implants, whether or not they go underneath the muscle.

Well, she admitted that she had one while dating Don Henley and after DH spilled the beans. I mean she says I would have never chosen to tell the world about that, which is admitting it happened.

Note - I do not fault or judge her in any way. It was her decision and her consequence.

Yep--count me in as a SOTM on this one too. Not a club anyone wants to belong too though. Those things hurt like hell! I didn't have to be operated on for either of mine-they disintegrated on their own. My Mom did however--in those days there was no ultrasound so they thought it was her appendix--they made the cut there and found out her appendix were okay--then cut lower--so she's got this fairly long scar across her belly from that. She told me it was the worst pain she's ever had trying to recuperate from that operation. I never knew this about Stevie until now. Interesting tidbit.

On the abortions--isn't there supposed to be an audio of an interview out there where she admits she had multiple abortions? I mean it's so clear that "Goodbye Baby" is about having an abortion.

But it's her life and I won't stand here in judgement for her for having done that. Or for anything she's ever done to be real honest. I'm not anyone's judge or jury. I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who are more than happy to sit around and discuss such things and hand out their opinions on it but you know--they just need to ask themselves-would you want what you've done in your life being relentlessly discussed and others who don't even know you or your life circumstances at the time weighing in with a verdict on you for your behavior? I didn't think so.

David

But it's her life and I won't stand here in judgement for her for having done that.I judge Stevie's behavior just as I judge anybody's behavior, including mine. I'll never be a better person myself unless I judge behavior, which teaches me to distinguish between good behavior & bad, & even to recognize that behavior can be both good & bad, depending on circumstances.

When I see good being done, I want to judge it as "good." Likewise with evil. I can't imagine wanting to live a decent life without the ability or the inclination to judge words & deeds -- & to understand my judgments.

Ultimately, I want to understand why the spelling of "judgment" changed from "judgement." I have a hunch that the cause must be dropped squarely in the lap of the newspaper industry. Likewise with "acknowledgment."

I do not think it is clear that Goodbye Baby is about an abortion either. It is about the loss of a child though, . Whether by abortion or miscarriage is what is not clear. Somehow I do not see her singing about a child she aborted at the close of every show.....now a child she lost..maybe. The music is very gentle and always reminds me of a soothing lullabye when it starts. Stevie also said it was one of the most emotional to sing everynight.

Even in the following article I find it hard to believe that she admitted to four abortions. Does anyone know if the real article says "babies" or was this just inserted recently by some fan trying to prove a point?

Spencer Bright
VOX Magazine (London) February 1992

Was there a common thread among her men? "They're all very smart and very loving, and they all had a difficult time with my life and the way that I live it and how busy I am." For four lovers, a crucial test came when she became pregnant and opted for terminations. "It's always been a tragedy. But they understood." But they didn't really. "Eventually their hearts couldn't take it, they couldn't understand quite enough, how deeply embedded in this I was. And so it eventually hurt them too much and they had to leave, or face devastation on their own."

She put her relationship with her fans before a relationship with one man. Ever since she saw Janis Joplin perform, Stevie has wanted to emulate her, to achieve that state of communion with the crowd. "I just wanted to be in love with my audience and I wanted them to be in love with me back."

But now there is remorse at the havoc her abortions have wreaked on her psyche. "To give up four babies is to give up a lot that would be here now. So that bothers me, a lot, and really breaks my heart. But they're gone, so..." She composes herself. "But I couldn't have because I was too busy. And I had all these commitments." She wants to adopt, but age and single-parenthood are against her.

That seems to be the only place that Stevie mentions 4 of them. Some people question the authenticity of that interview, however. If my memory serves me correct I think that article read: To give up four (babies) is to give up a lot” but I could be wrong. I don’t feel like going through my stuff but I am pretty sure that Freddie Mercury was on the cover of that issue of Vox.

I think with the "e" is the Brit. spelling.
We're rockers, by definition, since we're Americans -
so to "establish our own identity," we dropped the "e".
Now we're all independent and can think on our own and
all that fancy stuff  The American spelling is actually
"judgment," I believe, and the Brit. is with an "e"
But I bet if you look at Stevie's old scribblings on Sararhiannon.com,

Well, she sang Sara on the last tour and Henley said that was about their child Nicks aborted - and she never denied that, instead simply shoosing to say that Henley's public statements would not be how she would have chosen to tell the world about that. So, La Nicks is not beyond singing about an aborted child. I suppose it could be argued that GB is about the loss of LB's child in her and that LB's child meant more to her than Henley's, but that is speculative at best as none of us know how much these meant to her.

Also, if memory serves me correctly, she did not say she lost four babies. She was talking about loves and then she says something I lost four. But, I am not looking up that article

This article is too similar to the one on Vox. It's impossible she had spoken of the same topics in the same order. One is a copy of the other, IMO. And since this one is longer and more specific, I guess the one on Vox is the rehash. The journalist didn't even change the ending.
